The notion of f-derivations was introduced by Beidar and Fong to unify several kinds of linear maps including derivations, Lie derivations and Jordan derivations. In this paper we introduce the notion of f-biderivations as a natural "biderivation" counterpart of the notion of "f-derivations". We first show, under some conditions, that any f-derivation is a Jordan biderivation. Then, we turn to study f-biderivations of a unital algebra with an idempotent. Our second main result shows, under some conditions, that every Jordan biderivation can be written as a sum of a biderivation, an antibiderivation and an extremal biderivation. As a consequence we show that every Jordan biderivation on a triangular algebra is a biderivation.
Let $\mathfrak{A}$ be a unital ring with a nontrivial idempotent. In this paper, it is shown that under certain conditions every multiplicative generalized Jordan $n$-derivation $Δ:\mathfrak{A}\rightarrow\mathfrak{A}$ is additive. More precisely, it is proved that $Δ$ is of the form $Δ(t)=μt+δ(t),$ where $μ\in\mathcal{Z}(\mathfrak{A})$ and $δ:\mathfrak{A}\rightarrow\mathfrak{A}$ is a Jordan $n$-derivation. The main result is then applied to some classical examples of unital rings with nontrivial idempotents such as triangular rings, matrix rings, prime rings, nest algebras, standard operator a…
We gather some classical results and examples that show strict inclusion between the families of unital rings, rings with enough idempotents, rings with sets of local units, locally unital rings, s-unital rings and idempotent rings.
Let A be a unital algebra with a nontrivial idempotent e, and f=1-e. Suppose that A satisfies that exe.eAf={0}=fAe.exe implies exe=0 and eAf.fxf={0}=fxf.fAe implies fxf=0 for each x in A. We obtain the (necessary and) sufficient conditions for a Lie n-derivation ϕ on A to be of the form ϕ=d+δ+γ, where d is a derivation on A, δ is a singular Jordan derivation on A and γ is a linear mapping from A into the centre Z(A) vanishing on all (n-1)-th commutators of A. In particular, we also discuss the (necessary and) sufficient conditions for a Lie n-derivation ϕ on A to be standard, i.e., ϕ=d+γ.
The category of all $k$-algebras with a bilinear form, whose objects are all pairs $(R,b)$ where $R$ is a $k$-algebra and $b\colon R\times R\to k$ is a bilinear mapping, is equivalent to the category of unital $k$-algebras $A$ for which the canonical homomorphism $(k,1)\to(A,1_A)$ of unital $k$-algebras is a splitting monomorphism in the category of $k$-modules. Call the left inverses of this splitting monomorphism "weak augmentations" of the algebra. There is a category isomorphism between the category of $k$-algebras with a weak augmentation and the category of unital $k$-algebras $(A,b_A)$ …
Let $\Re$ and $\Re'$ unital $2$,$3$-torsion free alternative rings and $φ: \Re \rightarrow \Re'$ be a surjective Lie multiplicative map that preserves idempotents. Assume that $\Re$ has a nontrivial idempotents. Under certain assumptions on $\Re$, we prove that $φ$ is of the form $ψ+ τ$, where $ψ$ is either an isomorphism or the negative of an anti-isomorphism of $\Re$ onto $\Re'$ and $τ$ is an additive mapping of $\Re$ into the centre of $\Re'$ which maps commutators into zero.
An algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of $n\times n$ complex matrices is said to be \textit{idempotent compressible} if $E\mathcal{A}E$ is an algebra for all idempotents $E\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Analogously, $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be \textit{projection compressible} if $P\mathcal{A}P$ is an algebra for all orthogonal projections $P$ in $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we construct several examples of unital algebras that admit these properties. In addition, a complete classification of the unital idempotent compressible subalgebras of $\mathbb{M}_3(\mathbb{C})$ is obtained up to similarit…
For a commutative ring $R$ with identity, a Specker $R$-algebra is a commutative unital $R$-algebra generated by a Boolean algebra of idempotents, each nonzero element of which is faithful. Such algebras have arisen in the study of $\ell$-groups, idempotent-generated rings, Boolean powers of commutative rings, Pierce duality, and rings of continuous real-valued functions. We trace the origin of this notion from early studies of subgroups of bounded integer-valued functions to a variety of current contexts involving ring-theoretic, topological, and homological aspects of idempotent-generated al…
We obtain criteria for when a ring with enough idempotents is left/right artinian or noetherian in terms of local criteria defined by the associated complete set of idempotents for the ring. We apply these criteria to object unital category graded rings in general and, in particular, to the class of skew category algebras. Thereby, we generalize results by Nastasescu-van Oystaeyen, Bell, Park and Zelmanov from the group graded case to groupoid, and in some cases category, gradings.
Gerstenhaber's theorem states that the dimension of the unital algebra generated by two commuting $n\times n$ matrices is at most $n$. We study the analog of this question for positive matrices with a positive commutator. We show that the dimension of the unital algebra generated by the matrices is at most $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$ and that this bound can be attained. We also consider the corresponding question if one of the matrices is a permutation or a companion matrix or both of them are idempotents. In these cases, the upper bound for the dimension can be reduced significantly. In particular, th…
A subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ of $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$ is said to be projection compressible if $P\mathcal{A}P$ is an algebra for all orthogonal projections $P\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Likewise, $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be idempotent compressible if $E\mathcal{A}E$ is an algebra for all idempotents $E\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$. In this paper, a case-by-case analysis is used to classify the unital projection compressible subalgebras of $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$, $n\geq 4$, up to transposition and unitary equivalence. It is observed that every algebra shown to admit the projection compr…
Let $\R$ be an alternative ring containing a nontrivial idempotent and $\D$ be a multiplicative Lie-type derivation from $\R$ into itself. Under certain assumptions on $\R$, we prove that $\D$ is almost additive. Let $p_n(x_1, x_2, \cdots, x_n)$ be the $(n-1)$-th commutator defined by $n$ indeterminates $x_1, \cdots, x_n$. If $\R$ is a unital alternative ring with a nontrivial idempotent and is $\{2,3,n-1,n-3\}$-torsion free, it is shown under certain condition of $\R$ and $\D$, that $\D=δ+τ$, where $δ$ is a derivation and $τ\colon\R\longrightarrow{\mathcal Z}(\R)$ such that $τ(p_n(a_1,\ldots,…
If $V$ is a finite-dimensional unital commutative (maybe nonassociative) algebra carrying an associative positive definite bilinear form then there exist a nonzero idempotent $c\ne e$ ($e$ being the algebra unit) of the shortest possible length $|c|^2$. In particular, $|c|^2\le \frac12|e|^2$. We prove that the equality holds exactly when $V$ is a Jordan algebra of Clifford type.
In this paper we introduce the concept of purely infinite rings, which in the simple case agrees with the already existing notion of pure infiniteness. We establish various permanence properties of this notion, with respect to passage to matrix rings, corners, and behaviour under extensions, so being purely infinite is preserved under Morita equivalence. We show that a wealth of examples falls into this class, including important analogues of constructions commonly found in operator algebras. In particular, for any (s-)unital $K$-algebra having enough nonzero idempotents (for example, for a vo…
There are Jordan analogues of annihilators in Jordan algebras which are called Jordan annihilators. The present paper is devoted to investigation of those Jordan algebras every Jordan annihilator of which is generated by an idempotent as an inner ideal. We prove that a finite dimensional unital Jordan algebra satisfies this condition if and only if it has no nilpotent elements, and in this case it is a direct sum of simple Jordan algebras.
Let R be a (unital) commutative ring, and G be a finite group with order invertible in R. We introduce new idempotents in the double Burnside algebra RB(G,G), indexed by conjugacy classes of minimal sections of G, i.e. pairs (T,S) of subgroups of G, where S is a normal subgroup of T contained in the Frattini subgroup of T. These idempotents are orthogonal, and their sum is equal to the identity. It follows that for any biset functor F over R, the evaluation F (G) splits as a direct sum of specific R-modules indexed by minimal sections of G, up to conjugation. The restriction of these construct…
In this paper we prove that two idempotent rings are Morita equivalent if every corner of one of them is isomorphic to a corner of a matrix ring of the other one. We establish the converse (which is not true in general) for $σ$-unital rings having a $σ$-unit consisting of von Neumann regular elements. The following aim is to show that a property is Morita invariant if it is invariant under taking corners and under taking matrices. The previous results are used to check the Morita invariance of certain ring properties (being locally left/right artinian/noetherian, being categorically left/right…
