We show that the four-point functions in conformal field theory are defined as distributions on the boundary of the region of convergence of the conformal block expansion. The conformal block expansion converges in the sense of distributions on this boundary, i.e. it can be integrated term by term against appropriate test functions. This can be interpreted as a giving a new class of functionals that satisfy the swapping property when applied to the crossing equation, and we comment on the relation of our construction to other types of functionals. Our language is useful in all considerations involving the boundary of the region of convergence, e.g. for deriving the dispersion relations. We establish our results by elementary methods, relying only on crossing symmetry and the standard convergence properties of the conformal block expansion. This is the first in a series of papers on distributional properties of correlation functions in conformal field theory.
Our previous work [1] constructed, in three-dimensional momentum space, a manifestly crossing symmetric basis for scalar conformal four-point functions, based on the factorization property proposed by Polyakov. This work extends this construction to general dimensional conformal field theory. To facilitate the treatment of symmetric traceless tensors, we exploit techniques of spherical harmonics in general dimensions.
This paper investigates d-dimensional CFTs in the presence of a codimension-one boundary and CFTs defined on real projective space RP^d. Our analysis expands on the alpha space method recently proposed for one-dimensional CFTs in arXiv:1702.08471. In this work we establish integral representations for scalar two-point functions in boundary and crosscap CFTs using plane-wave-normalizable eigenfunctions of different conformal Casimir operators. CFT consistency conditions imply integral equations for the spectral densities appearing in these decompositions, and we study the relevant integral kern…
We investigate the Poincaré approach to computing 3d gravity partition functions dual to Rational CFT. For a single genus-1 boundary, we show that for certain infinite sets of levels, the SU(2)$_k$ WZW models provide unitary examples for which the Poincare series is a positive linear combination of two modular-invariant partition functions. This supports the interpretation that the bulk gravity theory (a topological Chern-Simons theory in this case) is dual to an average of distinct CFT's sharing the same Kac-Moody algebra. We compute the weights of this average for all seed primaries and all …
We analyse the leading logarithmic singularities in direct and crossed channel limit of the four-point functions in dilaton-axion sector of type IIB supergravity on $AdS_{5}$ in AdS/CFT correspondence. Logarithms do not cancel in the full correlator in both channels.
We construct a crossing symmetric basis for conformal four-point functions in momentum space by requiring consistent factorization. Just as scattering amplitudes factorize when the intermediate particle is on-shell, non-analytic parts of conformal correlators enjoy a similar factorization in momentum space. Based on this property, Polyakov, in his pioneering 1974 work, introduced a basis for conformal correlators which manifestly satisfies the crossing symmetry. He then initiated the bootstrap program by requiring its consistency with the operator product expansion. This approach is complement…
Two dimensional conformal field theories with central charge one are discussed. After a short review of theories based on one free boson, a different CFT is described, which is obtained as a limit of minimal models.
We investigate the limit of minimal model conformal field theories where the central charge approaches one. We conjecture that this limit is described by a non-rational CFT of central charge one. The limiting theory is different from the free boson but bears some resemblance to Liouville theory. Explicit expressions for the three point functions of bulk fields are presented, as well as a set of conformal boundary states. We provide analytic and numerical arguments in support of the claim that this data forms a consistent CFT.
This is an introduction to the microscopic techniques of non-rational bulk and boundary conformal field theory which are needed to describe strings moving in non-compact curved backgrounds. The latter arise e.g. in the context of AdS/CFT-like dualities and for studies of time-dependent processes. After a general outline of the central concepts, we focus on two specific but rather prototypical models: Liouville field theory and the 2D cigar. Rather than following the historical path, the presentation attempts to be systematic and self-contained.
In a weakly coupled gravity theory in the anti-de Sitter space, local states in the bulk are linear superpositions of Ishibashi states for a crosscap in the dual conformal field theory. The superposition structure can be constrained either by the microscopic causality in the bulk gravity or the bootstrap condition in the boundary conformal field theory. We show, contrary to some expectation, that these two conditions are not compatible to each other in the weak gravity regime. We also present an evidence to show that bulk local states in three dimensions are not organized by the Virasoro symme…
Crossing symmetry (CS) is the main tool in the bootstrap program applied to CFT models. This consists in an equality which imposes restrictions on the CFT data of a model, i.e, the OPE coefficients and the conformal dimensions. Reflection positivity (RP) has also played a role, since this condition lead to the unitary bound and reality of the OPE coefficients. In this paper we show that RP can still reveal more information, showing how RP itself can capture an important part of the restrictions imposed by the full CS equality. In order to do that, we use a connection used by us in a previous w…
We study conformal twist field four-point functions on a $\mathbb Z_N$ orbifold. We examine in detail the case $N=3$ and analyze theories obtained by replicated $N$-times a minimal model with central charge $c<1$. A fastly convergent expansion of the twist field correlation function in terms of sphere conformal blocks with central charge $Nc$ is obtained by exploiting covering map techniques. We discuss extensive applications of the formalism to the entanglement of two disjoint intervals in CFT, in particular we propose a conformal block expansion for the partially transposed reduced density m…
We explore the formulation of non-rational 2D quantum gravity in terms of a chiral CFT on a Riemann surface associated with the target space. The CFT in question is constructed as the collective theory for a matrix chain, which is dual to a statistical height model on dynamical triangulations. The heights are associated with the sheets of the Riemann surface, which represents an infinite branched cover of the spectral plane. We consider two examples of height models: the SOS model and the semi-restricted SOS (SRSOS) model, in which the heights are restricted from below. Both models are describ…
Among (conformal) quantum field theories, the rational conformal field theories are singled out by the fact that their correlators can be constructed from a modular tensor category C with a distinguished object, a symmetric special Frobenius algebra A in C, via the so-called TFT-construction. These correlators satisfy in particular all factorization constraints, which involve gluing homomorphisms relating correlators of world sheets of different topology. We review the action of the gluing homomorphisms and discuss the implications of the factorization constraints for boundary conditions. The …
The classification scheme for rational conformal field theories, given by the Mathur-Mukhi-Sen (MMS) program, identifies a rational conformal field theory by two numbers: $(n, l)$. $n$ is the number of characters of the rational conformal field theory. The characters form linearly independent solutions to a modular linear differential equation (which is also labelled by $(n, l)$); the Wronskian index $l$ is a non-negative integer associated to the structure of zeroes of the Wronskian. In this paper, we compute the $(n, l)$ values for three classes of well-known CFTs viz. the WZW CFTs, the Vira…
We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of {\cal N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. We show that entropy bounds arise generically in CFTs in connection to monotonicity properties with respect to temperature changes of a generalized C-function. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in t…
It has been shown that AdS/CFT calculations can reproduce certain exclusive 2->2 cross sections in QCD at high energy, both for near-forward and for fixed-angle scattering. In this paper, we extend prior treatments by using AdS/CFT to calculate the inclusive single-particle production cross section in QCD at high center-of-mass energy. We find that conformal invariance in the UV restricts the cross section to have a characteristic power-law falloff in the transverse momentum of the produced particle, with the exponent given by twice the conformal dimension of the produced particle, independent…
Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, we present a holographic description of various C-odd exchanges in high energy baryon-baryon and baryon-antibaryon scattering, and calculate their respective contributions to the difference in the total cross sections. We predict that, due to the warp factor of AdS_5, the total cross section in pp collisions is larger than in p\bar{p} collisions at asymptotically high energies.
We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section from the reflected entropy for local operator quench states in the holographic CFT. By comparing between the reflected entropy and the mutual information in this dynamical setup, we argue that (1) the reflected entropy can diagnose a new perspective of the chaotic nature for given mixed states and (2) it can also characterize classical correlations in the subregion/subregion duality. Moreover, we point out that we must improve the bulk interpretation of a heavy state even in the case of well-studied entanglement entropy. Finally, we sh…
We revisit the construction of local bulk operators in AdS/CFT with special focus on gravitational dressing and its consequences for bulk locality. Specializing to 2+1-dimensions, we investigate these issues via the proposed identification between bulk operators and cross-cap boundary states. We obtain explicit expressions for correlation functions of bulk fields with boundary stress tensor insertions, and find that they are free of non-local branch cuts but do have non-local poles. We recover the HKLL recipe for restoring bulk locality for interacting fields as the outcome of a natural CFT cr…
Motivated by the search for rational points in moduli spaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories, we investigate how points with enhanced symmetry algebras are distributed there. We first study the bosonic sigma-model with $S^1$ target space in detail and uncover hitherto unknown features. We find for instance that the vanishing of the twist gap, though true for the $S^1$ example, does not automatically follow from enhanced symmetry points being dense in the moduli space. We then explore the supersymmetric sigma-model on K3 by perturbing away from the torus orbifold locus. Though we do…
We develop an analytic approach to the four-point crossing equation in CFT, for general spacetime dimension. In a unitary CFT, the crossing equation (for, say, the s- and t-channel expansions) can be thought of as a vector equation in an infinite-dimensional space of complex analytic functions in two variables, which satisfy a boundedness condition in the u-channel Regge limit. We identify a useful basis for this space of functions, consisting of the set of s- and t-channel conformal blocks of double-twist operators in mean field theory. We describe two independent algorithms to construct the …
We investigate the absorption cross section for minimal-coupled scalars in the warped AdS_3 black hole. According to our calculation, the cross section reduces to the horizon area in the low energy limit as usually expected in contrast to what was previously found. We also calculate the greybody factor and find that the effective temperatures for the two chiral CFT's are consistent with that derived from the quasinormal modes. Observing the conjectured warped AdS/CFT correspondence, we suspect that a specific sector of the CFT operators with the desired conformal dimension could be responsible…
We introduce a new approach to the study of the crossing equation for CFTs in the presence of a boundary. We argue that there is a basis for this equation related to the generalized free field solution. The dual basis is a set of linear functionals which act on the crossing equation to give a set of sum rules on the boundary CFT data: the functional bootstrap equations. We show these equations are essentially equivalent to a Polyakov-type approach to the bootstrap of BCFTs, and show how to fix the so-called contact term ambiguity in that context. Finally, the functional bootstrap equations dia…
We study the two-point function of local operators in the presence of a defect in a generic conformal field theory. We define two pairs of cross ratios, which are convenient in the analysis of the OPE in the bulk and defect channel respectively. The new coordinates have a simple geometric interpretation, which can be exploited to efficiently compute conformal blocks in a power expansion. We illustrate this fact in the case of scalar external operators. We also elucidate the convergence properties of the bulk and defect OPE decompositions of the two-point function. In particular, we remark that…
We consider correlation functions in symmetric product ($S_N$) orbifold CFTs at large $N$ with arbitrary seed CFT, expanding on our earlier work arXiv:2211.04633 . Using covering space techniques, we calculate descent relations using fractional Virasoro generators in correlators, writing correlators of descendants in terms of correlators of ancestors. We first consider the case three-point functions of the form ($m$-cycle)-($n$-cycle)-($q$-cycle) which lift to arbitrary primaries on the cover, and descendants thereof. In these examples we show that the final descent relations do not depend on …

The method of large spin perturbation theory allows to analyse conformal field theories (CFT) by turning the crossing equations into an algebraic problem. We apply this method to a generic CFT with weakly broken higher spin (HS) symmetry, to the first non-trivial order in the breaking parameter. We show that the spectrum of broken currents, for any value of the spin, follows from crossing symmetry. After discussing a generic model of a single scalar field, we focus on vector models with $O(N)$ global symmetry. We rediscover the spectrum of several models, including the $O(N)$ Wilson-Fisher mod…
For AdS boundary conditions, we give a solution of the H3+ two point function involving degenerate field with SL(2)-label b^{-2}/2, which is defined on the full (u,z) unit square. It consists of two patches, one for z<u and one for u<z. Along the u=z "singularity", the solutions from both patches are shown to have finite limits and are merged continuously as suggested by the work of Hosomichi and Ribault. From this two point function, we can derive b^{-2}/2-shift equations for AdS_2 D-branes. We show that discrete as well as continuous AdS_2 branes are consistent with our novel shift equations…
The Rényi entanglement entropy (REE) of the states excited by local operators in two-dimensional irrational conformal field theories (CFTs), especially in Liouville field theory (LFT) and $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-Liouville field theory (SLFT), has been investigated. In particular, the excited states obtained by acting on the vacuum with primary operators were considered. {We start from evaluating the second REE in a compact $c=1$ free boson field theory at generic radius, which is an irrational CFT. Then we focus on the two special irrational CFTs, e.g., LFT and SLFT. In these theories, the secon…
We address the problem of computing the tachyon correlation functions in Liouville gravity with generic (non-rational) matter central charge c<1. We consider two variants of the theory. The first is the conventional one in which the effective matter interaction is given by the two matter screening charges. In the second variant the interaction is defined by the Liouville dressings of the non-trivial vertex operator of zero dimension. This particular deformation, referred to as "diagonal'', is motivated by the comparison with the discrete approach, which is the subject of a subsequent paper. In…
The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in a strongly coupled CFT plasma can be computed using the AdS/CFT correspondence either from equilibrium correlation functions or from the Janik-Peschanski dual of the boost invariant plasma expansion. We point out that the previously found disagreement for eta/s at finite t' Hooft coupling is resolved once the incoming-wave boundary condition for metric fluctuations at the horizon of the dual geometry is properly imposed.
We argue that holographic CFT states require a large amount of tripartite entanglement, in contrast to the conjecture that their entanglement is mostly bipartite. Our evidence is that this mostly-bipartite conjecture is in sharp conflict with two well-supported conjectures about the entanglement wedge cross section surface $E_W$. If $E_W$ is related to either the CFT's reflected entropy or its entanglement of purification, then those quantities can differ from the mutual information at $\mathcal{O}(\frac{1}{G_N})$. We prove that this implies holographic CFT states must have $\mathcal{O}(\frac{…
The four point function of Conformal Field Theories (CFT's) with global symmetry gives rise to multiple crossing symmetry constraints. We explicitly study the correlator of four scalar operators transforming in the fundamental representation of a global SO(N) and the correlator of chiral and anti-chiral superfields in a superconformal field theory. In both cases the constraints take the form of a triple sum rule, whose feasibility can be translated into restrictions on the CFT spectrum and interactions. In the case of SO(N) global symmetry we derive bounds for the first scalar singlet operator…
Recently established rationality of correlation functions in a globally conformal invariant quantum field theory satisfying Wightman axioms is used to construct a family of soluble models in 4-dimensional Minkowski space-time. We consider in detail a model of a neutral scalar field $ϕ$ of dimension 2. It depends on a positive real parameter c, an analogue of the Virasoro central charge, and admits for all (finite) c an infinite number of conserved symmetric tensor currents. The operator product algebra of $ϕ$ is shown to coincide with a simpler one, generated by a bilocal scalar field $V(x_1,x…
In this paper we consider the issue of the Froissart bound on the high energy behaviour of total cross sections. This bound, originally derived using principles of analyticity of scattering amplitudes, is seen to be satisfied by all the available experimental data on total hadronic cross sections. At strong coupling, gauge/gravity duality has been used to provide some insights into this behaviour. In this work, we find the subleading terms to the so-derived Froissart bound from AdS/CFT. We find that a $(\ln \frac{s}{s_0})$ term is obtained, with a negative coefficient. We see that the fits to …
Quantum gravitational effects on the near horizon may alter the black hole's horizon drastically to be partially reflective, portrayed by a quantum membrane. With this modification, the object can be considered as an exotic compact object (ECO). Quantum effects on the strong gravitational regime may also lead to a non-conserved matter tensor that can be described phenomenologically using Rastall gravity. In this work, we study the properties of black holes and ECOs within Rastall gravity using Kerr/CFT correspondence. We systematically investigate the properties of the most general rotating bl…
We study the sewing constraints for rational two-dimensional conformal field theory on oriented surfaces with possibly non-empty boundary. The boundary condition is taken to be the same on all segments of the boundary. The following uniqueness result is established: For a solution to the sewing constraints with nondegenerate closed state vacuum and nondegenerate two-point correlators of boundary fields on the disk and of bulk fields on the sphere, up to equivalence all correlators are uniquely determined by the one-, two,- and three-point correlators on the disk. Thus for any such theory every…
We consider the late time behavior of the analytically continued partition function $Z(β+ it) Z(β- it)$ in holographic $2d$ CFTs. This is a probe of information loss in such theories and in their holographic duals. We show that each Virasoro character decays in time, and so information is not restored at the level of individual characters. We identify a universal decaying contribution at late times, and conjecture that it describes the behavior of generic chaotic $2d$ CFTs out to times that are exponentially large in the central charge. It was recently suggested that at sufficiently late times…
We propose a novel approach to study conformal field theories (CFTs) in general dimensions. In the conformal bootstrap program, one usually searches for consistent CFT data that satisfy crossing symmetry. In the new approach, we reverse the logic and interpret manifestly crossing-symmetric functions as generating functions of conformal data. Physical CFTs can be obtained by scanning the space of symmetric functions. By truncating the fusion rules, we are able to concentrate on the low-lying operators and derive some approximate relations for their conformal data. It turns out that the free sca…
We derive an eikonal approximation to high energy interactions in Anti-de Sitter spacetime, by generalizing a position space derivation of the eikonal amplitude in flat space. We are able to resum, in terms of a generalized phase shift, ladder and cross ladder graphs associated to the exchange of a spin j field, to all orders in the coupling constant. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, the resulting amplitude determines the behavior of the dual conformal field theory four point function < O_1 O_2 O_1 O_2 > for small values of the cross ratios, in a Lorentzian regime. Finally we show that the ph…
We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in the presence of rotation. For such CFTs, we point out an intriguing resemblance in their thermodynamic formulas with the corresponding ones of two-dimensional CFTs. The…
The special properties of scalars having a mass such that the two possible dimensions of the dual scalar respect the unitarity and the Breitenlohner-Freedman bounds and their ratio is integral (``resonant scalars'') are studied in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The role of logarithmic branches in the gravity theory is related to the existence of a trace anomaly and to a marginal deformation in the Conformal Field Theory. The existence of asymptotic charges for the conformal group in the gravity theory is interpreted in terms of the properties of the corresponding CFT.
We present an analytic study of conformal field theories on the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^d$, focusing on the two-point functions of scalar operators. Due to the partially broken conformal symmetry, these are non-trivial functions of a conformal cross ratio and are constrained to obey a crossing equation. After reviewing basic facts about the structure of correlators on $\mathbb{RP}^d$, we study a simple holographic setup which captures the essential features of boundary correlators on $\mathbb{RP}^d$. The analysis is based on calculations of Witten diagrams on the quotient space $AdS…
We introduce the use of reinforcement-learning (RL) techniques to the conformal-bootstrap programme. We demonstrate that suitable soft Actor-Critic RL algorithms can perform efficient, relatively cheap high-dimensional searches in the space of scaling dimensions and OPE-squared coefficients that produce sensible results for tens of CFT data from a single crossing equation. In this paper we test this approach in well-known 2D CFTs, with particular focus on the Ising and tri-critical Ising models and the free compactified boson CFT. We present results of as high as 36-dimensional searches, whose…
We investigate exactly solvable two-dimensional conformal field theories that exist at generic values of the central charge, and that interpolate between A-series or D-series minimal models. When the central charge becomes rational, correlation functions of these CFTs may tend to correlation functions of minimal models, or diverge, or have finite limits which can be logarithmic. These results are based on analytic relations between four-point structure constants and residues of conformal blocks.

There exist logarithmic CFTs(LCFTs) such as the $c_{p,1}$ models. It is also well known that it generally contains Jordan cell structure. In this paper, we obtain the boundary Ishibashi state for a rank-2 Jordan cell structure and, with these states in $c=-2$ rational LCFT, we derive boundary states in the closed string picture, which correspond to boundary conditions in the open string picture. We also discuss the Verlinde formula for LCFT and possible applications to string theory.
The entanglement wedge cross section in holographic picture provides a geometrical description of the entanglement for mixed states. In this paper we study the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section in AdS/BCFT duality. In the presence of the boundary in conformal field theory (CFT), the dual entanglement wedge cross section exhibits abundant phase structures since the extremal surface may end on the brane. We present a universal treatment which is applicable for all the possible phases such that the inequalities for the entanglement wedge cross section can be proved in an algeb…
The $J\bar T$ deformation, built from the components of the stress tensor and of a $U(1)$ current, is a universal irrelevant deformation of two-dimensional CFTs that preserves the left-moving conformal symmetry, while breaking locality on the right-moving side. Operators in the $J\bar T$-deformed CFT are naturally labeled by the left-moving position and right-moving momentum and transform in representations of the one-dimensional extended conformal group. We derive an all-orders formula for the spectrum of conformal dimensions and charges of the deformed CFT, which we cross-check at leading or…
