Lip-reading has attracted a lot of research attention lately thanks to advances in deep learning. The current state-of-the-art model for recognition of isolated words in-the-wild consists of a residual network and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BGRU) layers. In this work, we address the limitations of this model and we propose changes which further improve its performance. Firstly, the BGRU layers are replaced with Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN). Secondly, we greatly simplify the training procedure, which allows us to train the model in one single stage. Thirdly, we show that the current state-of-the-art methodology produces models that do not generalize well to variations on the sequence length, and we addresses this issue by proposing a variable-length augmentation. We present results on the largest publicly-available datasets for isolated word recognition in English and Mandarin, LRW and LRW1000, respectively. Our proposed model results in an absolute improvement of 1.2% and 3.2%, respectively, in these datasets which is the new state-of-the-art performance.
Lipreading is an impressive technique and there has been a definite improvement of accuracy in recent years. However, existing methods for lipreading mainly build on autoregressive (AR) model, which generate target tokens one by one and suffer from high inference latency. To breakthrough this constraint, we propose FastLR, a non-autoregressive (NAR) lipreading model which generates all target tokens simultaneously. NAR lipreading is a challenging task that has many difficulties: 1) the discrepancy of sequence lengths between source and target makes it difficult to estimate the length of the ou…

Lipreading has witnessed a lot of progress due to the resurgence of neural networks. Recent works have placed emphasis on aspects such as improving performance by finding the optimal architecture or improving generalization. However, there is still a significant gap between the current methodologies and the requirements for an effective deployment of lipreading in practical scenarios. In this work, we propose a series of innovations that significantly bridge that gap: first, we raise the state-of-the-art performance by a wide margin on LRW and LRW-1000 to 88.5% and 46.6%, respectively using se…
We propose an end-to-end deep learning architecture for word-level visual speech recognition. The system is a combination of spatiotemporal convolutional, residual and bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory networks. We train and evaluate it on the Lipreading In-The-Wild benchmark, a challenging database of 500-size target-words consisting of 1.28sec video excerpts from BBC TV broadcasts. The proposed network attains word accuracy equal to 83.0, yielding 6.8 absolute improvement over the current state-of-the-art, without using information about word boundaries during training or testing.
We focus on the word-level visual lipreading, which requires to decode the word from the speaker's video. Recently, many state-of-the-art visual lipreading methods explore the end-to-end trainable deep models, involving the use of 2D convolutional networks (e.g., ResNet) as the front-end visual feature extractor and the sequential model (e.g., Bi-LSTM or Bi-GRU) as the back-end. Although a deep 2D convolution neural network can provide informative image-based features, it ignores the temporal motion existing between the adjacent frames. In this work, we investigate the spatial-temporal capacit…

Lipreading is the task of decoding text from the movement of a speaker's mouth. Traditional approaches separated the problem into two stages: designing or learning visual features, and prediction. More recent deep lipreading approaches are end-to-end trainable (Wand et al., 2016; Chung & Zisserman, 2016a). However, existing work on models trained end-to-end perform only word classification, rather than sentence-level sequence prediction. Studies have shown that human lipreading performance increases for longer words (Easton & Basala, 1982), indicating the importance of features capturing tempo…

Machine lipreading is a special type of automatic speech recognition (ASR) which transcribes human speech by visually interpreting the movement of related face regions including lips, face, and tongue. Recently, deep neural network based lipreading methods show great potential and have exceeded the accuracy of experienced human lipreaders in some benchmark datasets. However, lipreading is still far from being solved, and existing methods tend to have high error rates on the wild data. In this paper, we propose LCANet, an end-to-end deep neural network based lipreading system. LCANet encodes in…
We focus on the word-level visual lipreading, which requires recognizing the word being spoken, given only the video but not the audio. State-of-the-art methods explore the use of end-to-end neural networks, including a shallow (up to three layers) 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) + a deep 2D CNN (e.g., ResNet) as the front-end to extract visual features, and a recurrent neural network (e.g., bidirectional LSTM) as the back-end for classification. In this work, we propose to replace the shallow 3D CNNs + deep 2D CNNs front-end with recent successful deep 3D CNNs --- two-stream (i.e., gray…

Non-frontal lip views contain useful information which can be used to enhance the performance of frontal view lipreading. However, the vast majority of recent lipreading works, including the deep learning approaches which significantly outperform traditional approaches, have focused on frontal mouth images. As a consequence, research on joint learning of visual features and speech classification from multiple views is limited. Traditional 3D convolutions are computationally expensive, memory intensive, and due to large number of parameters, they often tend to overfit. On the other hand, 2D CNNs are less computationally expensive and less memory intensive than 3D CNNs and have shown remarkable results in applications like image classification and object recognition. However, in previous works, it has been observed that they are inferior to 3D CNNs when applied on a spatio-temporal input. In this work, we propose a convolutional block which extracts the spatial information by performing a 2D convolution and extracts t…

To efficiently extract spatiotemporal features of video for action recognition, most state-of-the-art methods integrate 1D temporal convolution into a conventional 2D CNN backbone. However, they all exploit 1D temporal convolution of fixed kernel size (i.e., 3) in the network building block, thus have suboptimal temporal modeling capability to handle both long-term and short-term actions. To address this problem, we first investigate the impacts of different kernel sizes for the 1D temporal convolutional filters. Then, we propose a simple yet efficient operation called Mixed Temporal Convoluti…

Temporal action localization is an important yet challenging problem. Given a long, untrimmed video consisting of multiple action instances and complex background contents, we need not only to recognize their action categories, but also to localize the start time and end time of each instance. Many state-of-the-art systems use segment-level classifiers to select and rank proposal segments of pre-determined boundaries. However, a desirable model should move beyond segment-level and make dense predictions at a fine granularity in time to determine precise temporal boundaries. To this end, we des…

Temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) are a commonly used architecture for temporal video segmentation. The dominant paradigm for video-based action segmentation is composed of two steps: first, for each frame, compute low-level features using Dense Trajectories or a Convolutional Neural Network that encode spatiotemporal information locally, and second, input these features into a classifier that captures high-level temporal relationships, such as a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). While often effective, this decoupling requires specifying two separate models, each with their own complexities, and prevents capturing more nuanced long-range spatiotemporal relationships.
