This paper explores the use of convolution LSTMs to simultaneously learn spatial- and temporal-information in videos. A deep network of convolutional LSTMs allows the model to access the entire range of temporal information at all spatial scales of the data. We describe our experiments involving convolution LSTMs for lipreading that demonstrate the model is capable of selectively choosing which spatiotemporal scales are most relevant for a particular dataset. The proposed deep architecture also holds promise in other applications where spatiotemporal features play a vital role without having to specifically cater the design of the network for the particular spatiotemporal features existent within the problem. For the Lip Reading in the Wild (LRW) dataset, our model slightly outperforms the previous state of the art (83.4% vs. 83.0%) and sets the new state of the art at 85.2% when the model is pretrained on the Lip Reading Sentences (LRS2) dataset.
We consider the problem of predicting semantic segmentation of future frames in a video. Given several observed frames in a video, our goal is to predict the semantic segmentation map of future frames that are not yet observed. A reliable solution to this problem is useful in many applications that require real-time decision making, such as autonomous driving. We propose a novel model that uses convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM) to encode the spatiotemporal information of observed frames for future prediction. We also extend our model to use bidirectional ConvLSTM to capture temporal information in…
Action recognition greatly benefits motion understanding in video analysis. Recurrent networks such as long short-term memory (LSTM) networks are a popular choice for motion-aware sequence learning tasks. Recently, a convolutional extension of LSTM was proposed, in which input-to-hidden and hidden-to-hidden transitions are modeled through convolution with a single kernel. This implies an unavoidable trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency. Herein, we propose a new enhancement to convolutional LSTM networks that supports accommodation of multiple convolutional kernels and layers. This re…

The general idea of inception networks is to implement wider networks instead of deeper networks. This network design was shown to improve the performance of image classification. The goal of precipitation nowcasting is to predict the future rainfall intensity in a local region over a relatively short period of time. Very few previous studies have examined this crucial and challenging weather forecasting problem from the machine learning perspective. In this paper, we formulate precipitation nowcasting as a spatiotemporal sequence forecasting problem in which both the input and the prediction target are spatiotemporal sequences. By extending the fully connected LSTM (FC-LSTM) to have convolutional structures in both the input-to-state and state-to-state transitions, we …
Semantic video segmentation is a key challenge for various applications. This paper presents a new model named Noisy-LSTM, which is trainable in an end-to-end manner, with convolutional LSTMs (ConvLSTMs) to leverage the temporal coherency in video frames. We also present a simple yet effective training strategy, which replaces a frame in video sequence with noises. This strategy spoils the temporal coherency in video frames during training and thus makes the temporal links in ConvLSTMs unreliable, which may consequently improve feature extraction from video frames, as well as serve as a regula…
We use multilayer Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks to learn representations of video sequences. Our model uses an encoder LSTM to map an input sequence into a fixed length representation. This representation is decoded using single or multiple decoder LSTMs to perform different tasks, such as reconstructing the input sequence, or predicting the future sequence. We experiment with two kinds of input sequences - patches of image pixels and high-level representations ("percepts") of video frames extracted using a pretrained convolutional net. We explore different design choices such as whet…

Automatically describing videos with natural language is a fundamental challenge for computer vision and natural language processing. Recently, progress in this problem has been achieved through two steps: 1) employing 2-D and/or 3-D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) (e.g. VGG, ResNet or C3D) to extract spatial and/or temporal features to encode video contents; and 2) applying Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to generate sentences to describe events in videos. Temporal attention-based model has gained much progress by considering the importance of each video frame. However, for a long video…
