Existing action localization approaches adopt shallow temporal convolutional networks (\ie, TCN) on 1D feature map extracted from video frames. In this paper, we empirically find that stacking more conventional temporal convolution layers actually deteriorates action classification performance, possibly ascribing to that all channels of 1D feature map, which generally are highly abstract and can be regarded as latent concepts, are excessively recombined in temporal convolution. To address this issue, we introduce a novel concept-wise temporal convolution (CTC) layer as an alternative to conventional temporal convolution layer for training deeper action localization networks. Instead of recombining latent concepts, CTC layer deploys a number of temporal filters to each concept separately with shared filter parameters across concepts. Thus can capture common temporal patterns of different concepts and significantly enrich representation ability. Via stacking CTC layers, we proposed a deep concept-wise temporal convolutional network (C-TCN), which boosts the state-of-the-art action localization performance on THUMOS'14 from 42.8 to 52.1 in terms of mAP(\%), achieving a relative improvement of 21.7\%. Favorable result is also obtained on ActivityNet.

Most state-of-the-art action localization systems process each action proposal individually, without explicitly exploiting their relations during learning. However, the relations between proposals actually play an important role in action localization, since a meaningful action always consists of multiple proposals in a video. In this paper, we propose to exploit the proposal-proposal relations using Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs). First, we construct an action proposal graph, where each proposal is represented as a node and their relations between two proposals as an edge. Here, we use t…

Temporal action localization is an important yet challenging problem. Given a long, untrimmed video consisting of multiple action instances and complex background contents, we need not only to recognize their action categories, but also to localize the start time and end time of each instance. Many state-of-the-art systems use segment-level classifiers to select and rank proposal segments of pre-determined boundaries. However, a desirable model should move beyond segment-level and make dense predictions at a fine granularity in time to determine precise temporal boundaries. To this end, we des…

Temporal action localization has long been researched in computer vision. Existing state-of-the-art action localization methods divide each video into multiple action units (i.e., proposals in two-stage methods and segments in one-stage methods) and then perform action recognition/regression on each of them individually, without explicitly exploiting their relations during learning. In this paper, we claim that the relations between action units play an important role in action localization, and a more powerful action detector should not only capture the local content of each action unit but a…

Temporal action localization is an important task of computer vision. Though a variety of methods have been proposed, it still remains an open question how to predict the temporal boundaries of action segments precisely. Most works use segment-level classifiers to select video segments pre-determined by action proposal or dense sliding windows. However, in order to achieve more precise action boundaries, a temporal localization system should make dense predictions at a fine granularity. A newly proposed work exploits Convolutional-Deconvolutional-Convolutional (CDC) filters to upsample the pre…

We address the problem of temporal action localization in videos. We pose action localization as a structured prediction over arbitrary-length temporal windows, where each window is scored as the sum of frame-wise classification scores. Additionally, our model classifies the start, middle, and end of each action as separate components, allowing our system to explicitly model each action's temporal evolution and take advantage of informative temporal dependencies present in this structure. In this framework, we localize actions by searching for the structured maximal sum, a problem for which we…
Most current pipelines for spatio-temporal action localization connect frame-wise or clip-wise detection results to generate action proposals, where only local information is exploited and the efficiency is hindered by dense per-frame localization. In this paper, we propose Coarse-to-Fine Action Detector (CFAD),an original end-to-end trainable framework for efficient spatio-temporal action localization. The CFAD introduces a new paradigm that first estimates coarse spatio-temporal action tubes from video streams, and then refines the tubes' location based on key timestamps. This concept is imp…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great capability of solving various artificial intelligence tasks. However, the increasing model size has raised challenges in employing them in resource-limited applications. In this work, we propose to compress deep models by using channel-wise convolutions, which re- place dense connections among feature maps with sparse ones in CNNs. Based on this novel operation, we build light-weight CNNs known as ChannelNets. Channel- Nets use three instances of channel-wise convolutions; namely group channel-wise convolutions, depth-wise separable channel…

Feature point matching for camera localization suffers from scalability problems. Even when feature descriptors associated with 3D scene points are locally unique, as coverage grows, similar or repeated features become increasingly common. As a result, the standard distance ratio-test used to identify reliable image feature points is overly restrictive and rejects many good candidate matches. We propose a simple coarse-to-fine strategy that uses conservative approximations to robust local ratio-tests that can be computed efficiently using global approximate k-nearest neighbor search. We treat …
Camera fingerprints are precious tools for a number of image forensics tasks. A well-known example is the photo response non-uniformity (PRNU) noise pattern, a powerful device fingerprint. Here, to address the image forgery localization problem, we rely on noiseprint, a recently proposed CNN-based camera model fingerprint. The CNN is trained to minimize the distance between same-model patches, and maximize the distance otherwise. As a result, the noiseprint accounts for model-related artifacts just like the PRNU accounts for device-related non-uniformities. However, unlike the PRNU, it is only…
Feature extraction plays an important role in visual localization. Unreliable features on dynamic objects or repetitive regions will interfere with feature matching and challenge indoor localization greatly. We also introduce a new dataset, named OpenLORIS-Location, to train the proposed network. The dataset contains 1553 images from 93 indoor locations. Various appearance changes between images of th…

Visual attention has been successfully applied in structural prediction tasks such as visual captioning and question answering. Existing visual attention models are generally spatial, i.e., the attention is modeled as spatial probabilities that re-weight the last conv-layer feature map of a CNN encoding an input image. However, we argue that such spatial attention does not necessarily conform to the attention mechanism --- a dynamic feature extractor that combines contextual fixations over time, as CNN features are naturally spatial, channel-wise and multi-layer. In this paper, we introduce a …
A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely used in image classification and gives better classification accuracy than the other techniques. The softmax cross-entropy loss function is often used for classification tasks. There are some works to introduce the additional terms in the objective function for training to make the features of the output layer more discriminative. The neuron-wise discriminant criterion makes the input feature of each neuron in the output layer discriminative by introducing the discriminant criterion to each of the features. Similarly, the center loss wa…

We revisit the idea of brain damage, i.e. the pruning of the coefficients of a neural network, and suggest how brain damage can be modified and used to speedup convolutional layers. The approach uses the fact that many efficient implementations reduce generalized convolutions to matrix multiplications. The suggested brain damage process prunes the convolutional kernel tensor in a group-wise fashion by adding group-sparsity regularization to the standard training process. After such group-wise pruning, convolutions can be reduced to multiplications of thinned dense matrices, which leads to spee…
Recent state-of-the-art performance on human-body pose estimation has been achieved with Deep Convolutional Networks (ConvNets). Traditional ConvNet architectures include pooling and sub-sampling layers which reduce computational requirements, introduce invariance and prevent over-training. These benefits of pooling come at the cost of reduced localization accuracy. We introduce a novel architecture which includes an efficient `position refinement' model that is trained to estimate the joint offset location within a small region of the image. Therefore, we propose the use of a multi-task FCN (MFCN) that utilizes two output branches for multi-task learning. One branch is used to learn the surface label, while the other branch is used to learn the edge or boundary of the spliced region. We t…
