Germanium antimony telluride has been the most used and studied phase-change material for electronic memory due to its suitable crystallization temperature, amorphous to crystalline resistance contrast, and stability of the amorphous phase. In this work, the segregation of Ge in a Ge2Sb2Te5 film of 30 nm thickness during heating inside the transmission electron microscope was observed and characterized. The Ge2Sb2Te5 film was deposited using sputtering on a Protochips Fusion holder and left uncapped in atmosphere for about four months. Oxygen incorporated within the film played a significant role in the chemical segregation observed which resulted in amorphous Ge-O grain boundaries and Sb and Te rich crystalline domains. Such composition changes can occur when the phase-change material interfaces insulating oxide layers in an integrated device and would significantly impact its electrical and thermal properties.
Bimetallic catalysts can undergo segregation or redistribution of the metals driven by oxidizing and reducing environments. Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) was used to relate displacement fields to compositional distributions in crystalline Pt-Rh alloy nanoparticles. 3D images of internal composition showed that the radial distribution of compositions reverses partially between the surface shell and the core when gas flow changes between O2 and H2. Our observation suggests that the elemental segregation of nanoparticle catalysts should be highly active during heterogeneous catalysis …
Under continuous light illumination, it is known that localized domains with segregated halide compositions form in semiconducting mixed-halide perovskites, thus severely limiting their optoelectronic applications due to the negative changes in bandgap energies and charge-carrier characteristics. Here we deposit mixed-halide perovskite CsPbBr1.2I1.8 nanocrystals onto an indium tin oxide substrate, whose temperature can be rapidly changed by ~10 degree in a few seconds by applying or removing an external voltage. Such a sudden temperature change induces a temporary transition of CsPbBr1.2I1.8 n…
We report the direct observation of the in-situ temperature-dependent surface segregation of Ni adatoms on single crystalline Pd surfaces using Positron annihilation induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy (PAES). For this study, a single atomic layer of Ni was grown on Pd with the crystallographic orientations Pd(111), Pd(110) and Pd(100). The sample temperature was increased from room temperature to 350$^\circ$C and the intensity of the Ni and Pd signal was evaluated from the recorded PAES spectra. Due to the outstanding surface sensitivity of PAES a clear tendency for Pd segregation was observe…
A 2D layer of spherical, crystalline Ge nanodots embedded in SiO2 was formed by low pressure chemical vapour deposition combined with furnace oxidation and rapid thermal annealing. The samples were characterized structurally by using transmission electron microscopy and rutherford back scattering spectrometry, as well as electrically by measuring CV and IV characteristics. It was found that formation of a high density Ge dots took place due to oxidation induced Ge segregation. The dots are situated in the SiO2 on the average distance 5 nm from the substrate. Strong evidence of charge storage e…
TEM specimens from potassium niobate single crystals were observed while being heated in a TEM. DWs and dislocations were observed; the DWs were mobile. In certain cases the DWs became pinned by the dislocations, at least for a short time, most likely due to interaction of strain fields. Both phase changes were observed with accompanying rapid appearance of new domain patterns.
Tailoring the physical properties of complex materials for targeted applications requires optimizing the microstructure and crystalline defects that influence electrical and thermal transport, and mechanical properties. Laser surface remelting can be used to modify the sub-surface microstructure of bulk materials and hence manipulate their properties locally. Here, we introduce an approach to perform remelting in a reactive nitrogen atmosphere, in order to form nitrides and induce segregation of nitrogen to structural defects. These defects arise from the fast solidification of the full-Heusle…
Na2C60 is believed to be an electron-hole counterpart of the Mott-Jahn--Teller insulator A4C60 salts. We present a study of infrared, ESR, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, chemical composition and neutron scattering on this compound. Our spectroscopic results at room temperature can be reconciled in a picture of segregated, separate regions of the size 3--10 nm. We observe a significant insulating C60 phase and at least two more phases, one of which we assign to metallic Na3C60. The separation disappears on heating by jump diffusion of the sodium ions, which we followed by neutron scatteri…
Photo- and charge-carrier induced ion migration is a major challenge when utilizing metal halide perovskite semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. For mixed iodide/bromide perovskites, the compositional instability due to light- or electrical bias induced phase- segregation restricts the exploitation of the entire bandgap range. Previous experimental and theoretical work suggests that excited states or charge-carriers trigger the process but the exact mechanism is still under debate. To identify the mechanism and cause of light-induced phase-segregation phenomena we investigate the fu…
Refractory multi-principal element alloys exhibiting promising mechanical properties such as excellent strength retention at elevated temperatures have been attracting increasing attention. Although their inherent chemical complexity is considered a defining feature, a challenge arises in predicting local chemical ordering, particularly in grain boundary regions with enhanced structural disorder. In this study, we use atomistic simulations of a large group of bicrystal models to sample a wide variety of interfacial sites (grain boundary) in NbMoTaW and explore emergent trends in interfacial se…

Joule-heating induced conductance-switching is studied in VO2, a Mott insulator. Complementary in-situ techniques including optical characterization, blackbody microscopy, scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) and numerical simulations are used. Abrupt redistribution in local temperature is shown to occur upon conductance-switching along with a structural phase transition, at the same current.
The rich phase diagram of bulk Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ resulting in a high tunability of physical properties gave rise to various studies related to fundamental research as well as prospective applications of the material. Importantly, as a consequence of strong correlation effects, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom are vigorously coupled. Hence, it is debatable whether such bulk phase diagrams can be transferred to inherently strained epitaxial thin films. In this paper, the structural orthorhombic to pseudo-cubic transition for $x=0.1$ is studied in ion-beam sputtered thin films an…
Science-driven design of future thermoelectric materials requires a deep understanding of the fundamental relationships between microstructure and transport properties. Grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials influence the thermoelectric performance through the scattering of phonons or the trapping of electrons due to space-charge effects. Yet, the current lack of careful investigations on grain boundary-associated features hinders further optimization of properties. Here, we study n-type NbCo1-xPtxSn half-Heusler alloys, which were synthesized by ball milling and spark plasma sintering …

Contemporary powder-based polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys inherit microstructures and properties that are heavily determined by the thermo-mechanical treatments during processing. Here, the influence of a thermal exposure alone to an alloy powder is studied to elucidate the controlling formation mechanisms of the strengthening precipitates using a combination of atom probe tomography and in-situ neutron diffraction. The initial powder comprised a single-phase supersaturated gamma only; from this, the evolution of gamma-prime volume fraction and lattice misfit was assessed. The initial …
We study the kinetics of the H release from plasma-deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon films under isothermal heating at 450, 500 and 600 {\degree}C for long times up to several days using in situ Raman microscopy. Four Raman parameters are analyzed. They allow the identification of different processes such as the carbon network reorganization and the H release from sp3 or sp2 carbon atoms and the corresponding timescales. Carbon reorganization with aromatization and loss of sp3 hybridization occurs first in 100 minutes at 500 {\degree}C. The final organization is similar at all investigat…
An in-situ nanoscopic investigation of the prototypical surface alloying system Ag/Pt(111) is reported. The morphology and the structure of the ultrathin Ag-Pt film is studied using Low Energy Electron Microscopy during growth at about 800 K. An amazingly rich dynamic behaviour is uncovered in which stress relieve plays a governing role. Initial growth leads to surface alloying with prolonged and retarded nucleation of ad-islands. Beyond 50% coverage de-alloying proceeds, joined by partial segregation of Pt towards the centre of large islands in violent processes. Upon coalescence the irregula…
Aluminum-germanium nanowires (NWs) thermal activated solid state reaction is a promising system as very sharp and well defined one dimensional contacts can be created between a metal and a semiconductor, that can become a quantum dot if the size becomes sufficiently small. In the search for high performance devices without variability, it is of high interest to allow deterministic fabrication of nanowire quantum dots, avoiding sample variability and obtaining atomic scale precision on the fabricated dot size. In this paper, we present a reliable fabrication process to produce sub-10 nm Ge quan…
A simple method for detection of melting event in laser-heated diamond anvil cells (DACs) is introduced. The melting is registered optically by the formation of spherical drops of the investigated material as heated in an inert pressure transmitting medium. Feasibility of the method is demonstrated on the examples of metal (iron and gold) and iron oxide (Fe2O3), materials molten at pressures over 40 GPa employing a portable laser heating system.
Glassy carbon is a graphene-rich form of elemental carbon obtained from pyrolysis of polymers, which is composed of three-dimensionally arranged, curved graphene fragments alongside fractions of disordered carbon and voids. Pyrolysis encompasses gradual heating of polymers above 900 degree C under inert atmosphere, followed by cooling to room temperature. Here we report on an experimental method to perform in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) for the direct visualization of microstructural evolution in a pyrolyzing polymer in the 500-1200 degree C temperature range…
We study the growth of the Fe films on GaAs(100) at a low temperature, 140 K, by $in$-$situ$ UHV x-ray reflectivity using synchrotron radiation. We find rough surface with the growth exponent, $β_S$ = 0.51$\pm$0.04. This indicates that the growth of the Fe film proceeds via the restrictive relaxation due to insufficient thermal diffusion of the adatoms. The XRR curves are nicely fit by a model with a uniform Fe film, implying that the surface segregation and interface alloying of both Ga and As are negligible. When the Fe film is annealed to 300 K, however, the corresponding XRR can be fit onl…
A dedicated in situ heating setup in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) followed by an ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is used to characterize the nucleation and early growth stages of Fe-Al intermetallics (IMs) at 596 °C. A location tracking is used to interpret further characterization. Ex situ AFM observations reveal a slight shrinkage and out of plane protrusion of the IM at the onset of IM nucleation followed by directional growth. The formed interfacial IM compounds were identified by ex situ EBSD. It is now clearly demonstrated that th…
During the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process, the built part undergoes multiple rapid heating-cooling cycles, leading to complex microstructures with nonuniform properties. In the present work, a computational framework, which weakly couples a finite element thermal model to a non-equilibrium PF model was developed to investigate the rapid solidification microstructure of a Ni-Nb alloy during L-PBF. The framework is utilized to predict the spatial variation of the morphology and size of cellular segregation structure as well as the microsegregation in single-track melt pool microstructur…
An in situ study of the epitaxial growth of SmN thin films on Ga-polar GaN (0001)templates by molecular beam epitaxy is reported. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we found that Ga segregates at the surface during the first stages of growth. We showed that the problem related to Ga surface segregation can be simply suppressed by growing a few monolayers of AlN before starting the SmN growth. This results in a significant improvement of the crystallinity of SmN thin films assessed by X-ray diffraction.
The Zn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to investigate in situ the decomposition of zinc peroxide (ZnO$_2$) to zinc oxide (ZnO). Principal component and linear combination analyses of the EXAFS spectra have been employed to identify the phase composition of the oxide upon heating to 900$^\circ$C. Only the ZnO$_2$ phase has been found up to 180$^\circ$C, whereas only the nanocrystalline ZnO phase has occurred above 250$^\circ$C. Detailed structural information on the temperature dependence of the local environment of zinc atoms has been obtained using the reverse Monte Carlo s…
