A triangle center such as the incenter, barycenter, etc., is specified by a function thrice- and cyclically applied on sidelengths and/or angles. Consider the 1d family of 3-periodics in the elliptic billiard, and the loci of its triangle centers. Some will sweep ellipses, and others higher-degree algebraic curves. We propose two rigorous methods to prove if the locus of a given center is an ellipse: one based on computer algebra, and another based on an algebro-geometric method. We also prove that if the triangle center function is rational on sidelengths, the locus is algebraic
We prove some recent experimental observations of D. Reznik concerning periodic billiard orbits in ellipses. For example, the sum of cosines of the angles of a periodic billiard polygon remains constant in the one-parameter family of such polygons (that exist due to the Poncelet porism). In our proofs, we use geometric and complex analytic methods.
In the class of strictly convex smooth boundaries, each of which not having strip around its boundary foliated by invariant curves, we prove that the Taylor coefficients of the "normalized" Mather's $β$-function are invariants under $C^\infty$-conjugacies. In contrast, we prove that any two elliptic billiard maps are $C^0$-conjugated near their respective boundaries, and $C^\infty$-conjugated in the open cylinder, near the boundary and away from a plain passing through the center of the underlying ellipse. We also prove that if the billiard maps corresponding to two ellipses are topologically …
The locus of centers of inscribed circles in triangles, the 3-periodic orbits of an elliptic billiard, is also an ellipse. In this work we obtain the canonical equation of this ellipse, complementing the previous results obtained by O. Romaskevich.
Caustics are curves with the property that a billiard trajectory, once tangent to it, stays tangent after every reflection at the boundary of the billiard table. When the billiard table is an ellipse, any nonsingular billiard trajectory has a caustic, which can be either a confocal ellipse or a confocal hyperbola. Resonant caustics ---the ones whose tangent trajectories are closed polygons--- are destroyed under generic perturbations of the billiard table. We prove that none of the resonant elliptical caustics persists under a large class of explicit perturbations of the original ellipse. This…
In view of classical results of Masur and Veech almost every element in the moduli space of compact translation surfaces is recurrent. In this paper we focus on the problem of recurrence for elements of smooth curves in the moduli space. We give an effective criterion for the recurrence of almost every element of a smooth curve. The criterion relies on results developed by Minsky-Weiss in \cite{Mi-We}. Next we apply the criterion to the billiard flow on planar tables confined by arcs of confocal conics. The phase space of such billiard flow splits into invariant subsets determined by caustics.…
The article studies a generalization of the elliptic billiard to the complex domain. We show that the billiard orbits also have caustics, and that the number of such caustics is bigger than for the real case. For example, for a given ellipse E, there exist exactly two confocal ellipses such that the triangular orbits of E are circumscribed about one of them, and each tangent line to one of those ellipses is a side of a triangular orbit. We also give a bound on the number of caustics for orbits with a fixed number of sides.
We study billiard dynamics inside an ellipse for which the axes lengths are changed periodically in time and an $O(δ)$-small quartic polynomial deformation is added to the boundary. In this situation the energy of the particle in the billiard is no longer conserved. We show a Fermi acceleration in such system: there exists a billiard trajectory on which the energy tends to infinity. The construction is based on the analysis of dynamics in the phase space near a homoclinic intersection of the stable and unstable manifolds of the normally hyperbolic invariant cylinder $Λ$, parameterised by the e…
The classical Birkhoff conjecture claims that the boundary of a strictly convex integrable billiard table is necessarily an ellipse (or a circle as a special case). In this article we prove a complete local version of this conjecture: a small integrable perturbation of an ellipse must be an ellipse. This extends and completes the result in [3], where nearly circular domains were considered. One of the crucial ideas in the proof is to extend action-angle coordinates for elliptic billiards into complex domains (with respect to the angle), and to thoroughly analyze the nature of their complex sin…
In this paper we prove the Birkhoff-Poritsky conjecture for centrally-symmetric $C^2$-smooth convex planar billiards. We assume that the domain $\mathcal A$ between the invariant curve of $4$-periodic orbits and the boundary of the phase cylinder is foliated by $C^0$-invariant curves. Under this assumption we prove that the billiard curve is an ellipse. For the original Birkhoff-Poritsky formulation we show that if a neighborhood of the boundary of billiard domain has a $C^1$-smooth foliation by convex caustics of rotation numbers in the interval (0; 1/4] then the boundary curve is an ellipse.…

We introduce several-dozen experimentally-found invariants of Poncelet N-periodics in the confocal ellipse pair (Elliptic Billiard). Recall this family is fully defined by two integrals of motion (linear and angular momentum), so any "new" invariants are dependent upon them. Nevertheless, proving them may require sophisticated methods. We reference some two-dozen proofs already contributed. We hope this article will motivate contributions for those still lacking proof.
We study center power with respect to circles derived from Poncelet 3-periodics (triangles) in a generic pair of ellipses as well as loci of their triangle centers. We show that (i) for any concentric pair, the power of the center with respect to either circumcircle or Euler's circle is invariant, and (ii) if a triangle center of a 3-periodic in a generic nested pair is a fixed affine combination of barycenter and circumcenter, its locus over the family is an ellipse.
We consider 3-periodic orbits in an elliptic billiard. Numerical experiments conducted by Dan Reznik have shown that the locus of the centers of inscribed circles of the corresponding triangles is an ellipse. We prove this fact by the complexification of the problem coupled with the complex law or rfelection.
The dynamic geometry of the family of 3-periodics in the Elliptic Billiard is mystifying. Besides conserving perimeter and the ratio of inradius-to-circumradius, it has a stationary point. Furthermore, its triangle centers sweep out mesmerizing loci including ellipses, quartics, circles, and a slew of other more complex curves. Here we explore a bevy of new phenomena relating to (i) the shape of 3-periodics and (ii) the kinematics of certain Triangle Centers constrained to the Billiard boundary, specifically the non-monotonic motion some can display with respect to 3-periodics. Hypnotizing is …
We study the stability of periodic trajectories of planar inverse magnetic billiards, a dynamical system whose trajectories are straight lines inside a connected planar domain $Ω$ and circular arcs outside $Ω$. Explicit examples are calculated in circles, ellipses, and the one parameter family of curves $x^{2k}+y^{2k}=1$. Comparisons are made to the linear stability of periodic billiard and magnetic billiard trajectories.
We compute the volumes of the eigenform loci in the moduli space of genus two Abelian differentials. From this, we obtain asymptotic formulas for counting closed billiards paths in certain L-shaped polygons with barriers.
We consider a billiard problem for compact domains bounded by confocal conics on a hyperboloid of one sheet in the Minkowski space. We show that there are two types of confocal families in such setting. Using an algebro-geometric integration technique, we prove that the billiard within generalized ellipses of each type is integrable in the sense of Liouville. Further, we prove a generalization of the Poncelet theorem and derive Cayley-type conditions for periodic trajectories and explore geometric consequences.

Can any secrets still be shed by that much studied, uniquely integrable, Elliptic Billiard? Starting by examining the family of 3-periodic trajectories and the loci of their Triangular Centers, one obtains a beautiful and variegated gallery of curves: ellipses, quartics, sextics, circles, and even a stationary point. Secondly, one notices this family conserves an intriguing ratio: Inradius-to-Circumradius. In turn this implies three conservation corollaries: (i) the sum of bounce angle cosines, (ii) the product of excentral cosines, and (iii) the ratio of excentral-to-orbit areas. Monge's Orth…
We consider billiard ball motion in a convex domain of the Euclidean plane bounded by a piece-wise smooth curve influenced by the constant magnetic field. We show that if there exists a polynomial in velocities integral of the magnetic billiard flow then every smooth piece $γ$ of the boundary must be algebraic and either is a circle or satisfies very strong restrictions. In particular in the case of ellipse it follows that magnetic billiard is algebraically not integrable for all magnitudes of the magnetic field. We conjecture that circle is the only integrable magnetic billiard not only in th…
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for periodic and for elliptic periodic trajectories of billiards within an ellipse in the Minkowski plane in terms of an underlining elliptic curve. We provide several examples of periodic and elliptic periodic trajectories with small periods. We observe relationship between Cayley-type conditions and discriminantly separable and factorizable polynomials. Equivalent conditions for periodicity and elliptic periodicity are derived in terms of polynomial-functional equations as well. The corresponding polynomials are related to the classical extremal …
In this paper, we investigate $C^1$ isospectral deformations of the ellipse with Robin boundary conditions, allowing both the Robin function and domain to deform simultaneously. We prove that if the deformations preserve the reflectional symmetries of the ellipse, then the first variation of both the domain and Robin function must vanish. Reparameterizing allows us to show that such smooth deformations must be flat at $ε= 0$. In particular, there exist no such analytic isospectral deformations. The key ingredients are a version of Hadamard's variational formula for variable Robin boundary cond…
The aim of this work is to continue the analysis, started in arXiv:2105.02108, of the dynamics of a point-mass particle $P$ moving in a galaxy with an harmonic biaxial core, in whose center sits a Keplerian attractive center (e.g. a Black Hole). Accordingly, the plane $\mathbb R^2$ is divided into two complementary domains, depending on whether the gravitational effects of the galaxy's mass distribution or of the Black Hole prevail. Thus, solutions alternate arcs of Keplerian hyperbolae with harmonic ellipses; at the interface, the trajectory is refracted according to Snell's law. The model wa…
We present a solution of the algebraic version of Birkhoff Conjecture on integrable billiards. Namely we show that every polynomially integrable real bounded convex planar billiard with smooth boundary is an ellipse. We extend this result to billiards with piecewise-smooth and not necessarily convex boundary on arbitrary two-dimensional surface of constant curvature: plane, sphere, Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) plane; each of them being modeled as a plane or a (pseudo-) sphere in $\mathbb R^3$ equipped with appropriate quadratic form. Namely, we show that a billiard is polynomially integrable, if a…
Given an exact symplectic map $T$ of a cylinder with a generating function $H$ satisfying the so-called negative twist condition, $H_{12}>0$, we study the locally maximizing orbits of $T$, that is, configurations which are local maxima of the action functional $\sum_n H(q_n,q_{n+1})$. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a configuration to be locally maximizing. Using it, we consider a situation where $T$ has two generating functions with respect to two different sets of symplectic coordinates. We suggest a simple geometric condition which guarantees that the set of locally maxi…
In this paper we prove results on Birkhoff and Oseledets genericity along certain curves in the space of affine lattices and in moduli spaces of translation surfaces. We also prove applications of these results to dynamical billiards, mathematical physics and number theory. In the space of affine lattices $ASL_2(\mathbb{R})/ASL_2( \mathbb{Z})$, we prove that almost every point on a curve with some non-degeneracy assumptions is Birkhoff generic for the geodesic flow. This implies almost everywhere genericity for some curves in the locus of branched covers of the torus inside the stratum $\mathc…
A comprehensive analysis of periodic trajectories of billiards within ellipses in the Euclidean plane is presented. The novelty of the approach is based on a relationship recently established by the authors between periodic billiard trajectories and extremal polynomials on the systems of $d$ intervals on the real line and ellipsoidal billiards in $d$-dimensional space. Even in the planar case, systematically studied in the present paper it leads to new results in characterizing $n$ periodic trajectories vs. so-called $n$ elliptic periodic trajectories, which are $n$-periodic in elliptical coor…
