The structural, electronic and dynamical properties of a group of 2D germanium-based compounds, including GeC, GeN, GeO, GeSi, GeS, GeSe, and germanene, are investigated by employing first-principles calculations. The most stable structure of each of these systems is identified after considering the most probable configurations and performing accurate phonon calculations. We introduce a new phase of germanene, which we name the tile germanene, which is significantly more stable than the known hexagonal germanene. We apply the modern modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) and DFT1/2 schemes to obtain an accurate band structure for our selected 2D materials. It is seen that GeO and GeC exhibit the highest band gaps of more than 3 eV in this group of materials. Moreover, we argue that, in contrast to the semi-metallic nature of hexagonal germanene, the tile germanene is a very good conductor. The band edges of our semiconducting 2D materials are accurately aligned to the vacuum level to address the potential photocatalytic application of this system for water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction. The optical properties, including dielectric functions, refractive index, reflectivity, and Loss function of the samples are investigated in the framework of the Bethe-Salpeter approach.
With the development of modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, Bi1-xSbx can be synthesized into different nanoscale and nanostructured forms, including thin films, nanowires, nanotubes, nanoribbons, and many others. However, due to the strong correlation between electrons and holes at the L-point in the Brillouin zone, the direct band evolves in an anomalous manner under the quantum confinement when nanostructured. Due to the alloying and the low symmetry, predicting the L-point direct bandgap in a nanomaterial using either ab initio calculations or kp perturbations can be computationally cost…
The study of two- dimensional (2D) materials is a rapidly growing area within nanomaterial research. However, the high equipment costs, which include the processing systems necessary for creating these materials, can be a barrier to entry for some researchers interested in studying these novel materials. Such process systems include those used for chemical vapor deposition. This article presents the first open-source design for an automated chemical vapor deposition system that can be built for less than a third of the cost for a similar commercial system. Our design can be easily customized a…
Attracted by the importance of new materials in nanotechnology area, this thesis develops this research field while deepening results. We started by introducing the more sophisticated simulation and calculation methods, such as the Monte Carlo method, the mean field theory, the effectif field theory and the transfer matrix. Subsequently, we studied the magnetic and hysteretic properties of the materials. Then we have detailed some of our contributions related to the materials based on graphene and ferrimagnetic nanomaterials with different morphologies. We discussed the effect of defects on th…
Machine-learning (ML) techniques have revolutionized a host of research fields of chemical and materials science with accelerated, high-efficiency discoveries in design, synthesis, manufacturing, characterization and application of novel functional materials, especially at the nanometre scale. The reason is the time efficiency, prediction accuracy and good generalization abilities, which gradually replaces the traditional experimental or computational work. With enormous potentiality to tackle more real-world problems, ML provides a more comprehensive insight into combinations with molecules/m…
The effective transport properties of heterogeneous nanoscale materials and structures are affected by several geometrical and physical factors. Among them the presence of imperfect interfaces plays a central role being often at the origin of the scale effects. To describe real contacts between different phases some classical schemes have been introduced in literature, namely the low and the high conducting interface models. Here, we introduce a generalized formalism, which is able to take into account the properties of both previous schemes and, at the same time, it implements more complex be…
We discuss how simulations of mechanical properties of materials require descriptions at many different length scales --- from the nanoscale where an atomic description is appropriate, through a mesoscale where dislocation based descriptions may be useful, to macroscopic length scales. In some materials, such as nanocrystalline metals, the range of length scales is compressed and a polycrystalline material may be simulated at the atomic scale. The first part of the paper describes such simulations of nanocrystalline copper. We observe how the grain boundaries contribute actively to the deforma…
In 2012, Bjorkman et al. posed the question "Are we van der Waals ready?" [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter, 2012, 24, 424218] about the ability of ab initio modelling to reproduce van der Waals (vdW) dispersion forces in layered materials. The answer at that time was no, however. Here we report on a new generation of vdW dispersion models and show that one, fractionally-ionic atom (FIA) theory, offers close to quantitative predictions for layered structures. Furthermore, it does so from a qualitatively correct picture of dispersion forces. Other methods, such as D3 and optB88vdW also work well, albe…
Binary metallic carbides belong to a technologically prominent class of materials. We have explored the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical, and some thermophysical properties of XC (X = Nb, Ta, Ti) binary metallic carbides in details employing first-principles method. Some of the results obtained are novel. A comparative analysis has been made.
This paper gives a short overview of the calculation of thermal properties of materials from first principles, using the Quasi-Harmonic Approximation (QHA). We first introduce some of the thermal properties of interest and describe how they can be calculated in the framework of the QHA; then we briefly recall Density-Functional Perturbation Theory as a tool for calculating phonons from first principles, and present some codes that implement it; finally we review recent applications of first-principle QHA.
Boron nitride (BN) is a structurally versatile insulator since it can be found in several crystalline structures with interesting mechanical and electrical properties, making this material attractive for technological applications. Seeking to improve its features, experimental and simulational studies for the amorphous phase (a-BN) have been carried out by some groups, focusing on the electrical and structural properties, pressure-induced phase transformations, and hydrogenated a-BN. In this work two amorphous structures are computationally generated and studied using ab initio Molecular Dynam…
The nonlinear optical properties and electro-optic effects of some oxygen-octahedric ferroelectrics are studied by the density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) expressions based on first principle calculations without the scissor approximation. We present calculations of the frequency- dependent complex dielectric function and the second harmonic generation response coefficient \c{hi}(2)(-2ω,ω,ω) over a large frequency range in tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. The electronic linear electrooptic susceptibility \c{hi}(2) (-ω,ω,0) is also evaluated below the ban…
In topological semimetals such as Weyl, Dirac, and nodal-line semimetals, the band gap closes at points or along lines in k space which are not necessarily located at high-symmetry positions in the Brillouin zone. Therefore, it is not straightforward to find these topological semimetals by ab initio calculations because the band structure is usually calculated only along high-symmetry lines. In this paper, we review recent studies on topological semimetals by ab initio calculations. We explain theoretical frameworks which can be used for the search for topological semimetal materials, and some…
We report ab initio calculations of the electronic band structure, the corresponding optical spectra, and the phonon dispersion relations of trigonal alpha-HgS (cinnabar). The calculated dielectric functions are compared with unpublished optical measurements by Zallen and coworkers. The phonon dispersion relations are used to calculate the temperature and isotopic mass dependence of the specific heat which has been compared with experimental data obtained on samples with the natural isotope abundances of the elements Hg and S (natural minerals and vapor phase grown samples) and on samples prep…
Phononic properties are commonly studied by calculating force constants using the density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Although DFT simulations offer accurate estimations of phonon dispersion relations or thermal properties, but for low-symmetry and nanoporous structures the computational cost quickly becomes very demanding. Moreover, the computational setups may yield nonphysical imaginary frequencies in the phonon dispersion curves, impeding the assessment of phononic properties and the dynamical stability of the considered system. Here, we compute phonon dispersion relations and exa…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) belong to technologically important compounds. We have explored the structural, elastic, bonding, optoelectronic and some thermo-physical properties of ZrX2 (X = S, Se, Te) TMDCs in details via ab-initio technique in this study. Elastic anisotropy indices, atomic bonding character, optoelectronic properties and thermo-physical parameters including melting temperature and minimum phonon thermal conductivity are investigated for the first time. All the TMDCs under investigation possess significant elastic anisotropy and layered structural features. ZrX2 (…
Over the last few years, $ab~initio$ methods have become an increasingly popular tool to evaluate intrinsic carrier transport properties in 2D materials. The lack of experimental information, and the progress made in the development of DFT tools to evaluate electronic band structures, phonon dispersions, and electron-phonon scattering matrix-elements, have made them a favored choice. However, a large discrepancy is observed in the literature among the $ab~initio$ calculated carrier mobility in 2D materials. Some of the discrepancies are a result of the physical approximations made in calculati…
We have performed a first principles study of structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of orthorhombic Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3 compounds using the density functional theory within the local density approximation. The lattice parameters, bulk modulus, and its pressure derivatives of these compounds have been obtained. The second-order elastic constants have been calculated, and the other related quantities such as the Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, anisotropy factor, sound velocities, Debye temperature, and hardness have also been estimated in the present work. The …
Since the pioneering efforts of Duwez and coworkers in 1965, when a solid amorphous phase of Pd-Si ($a$-PdSi) was obtained in the vicinity of the eutectic concentration, much work has been done. However, some points related to the atomic structures remain to be systematized. In this work, 8 amorphous Pd$_{100-c}$Si$_{c}$ alloys (c = 2.5, 5, 10, 13.34, 15, 17.5, 20, and 22 at %) were generated by molecular dynamics $ab$ $initio$ simulations; the short-range structure is analyzed using several correlation functions, like Pair Distribution Functions, reduced Pair Distribution Functions, Plane Ang…
A first-principles derived approach is combined with the inverse Monte Carlo technique to determine the atomic orderings leading to prefixed properties in Pb(Sc_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})O_{3} perovskite alloy. We find that some arrangements between Sc and Nb atoms result in drastic changes with respect to the disordered material, including ground states of new symmetries, large enhancement of electromechanical responses, and considerable shift of the Curie temperature. We discuss the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these unusual effects.
In the present work, the atomic and the electronic structures of Au3N, AuN and AuN2 are investigated using first-principles density-functional theory (DFT). We studied cohesive energy vs. volume data for a wide range of possible structures of these nitrides. Obtained data was fitted to a Birch-Murnaghan third-order equation of state (EOS) so as to identify the most likely candidates for the true crystal structure in this subset of the infinite parameter space, and to determine their equilibrium structural parameters. The analysis of the electronic properties was achieved by the calculations of…
Using first-principles calculations, we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of partially open zigzag carbon nanotube (CNT) superlattices. It is found that depending on their opening degree, these superlattices can exhibit multiple localized states around the Fermi energy. More importantly, some electronic states confined in some parts of the structure even have special magnetic orderings. We demonstrate that, as a proof of principle, some partially open zigzag CNT superlattices are by themselves giant (100%) magnetoresistive devices. Furthermore, the localized(and spin-polarized) st…
Plane-wave pseudopotential methods and density functional perturbation theory are used to calculate the phonon density of states and thermodynamic functions of h-P4O10. The calculated vibrational spectrum is in good agreement with the measured spectrum, but the calculations indicate some modifications in the interpretation of the spectrum, mainly suggesting changes in the number of components used to fit a few of the observed peaks. The calculated low-temperature heat capacity is in good agreement with the measured heat capacity, with a systematic offset of approximately -5 J mol-1 K-1, indepe…
A study based on ab initio calculations is presented on the estructural, elastic, and vibrational properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes with different radii and chiralities. We use SIESTA, an implementation of pseudopotential-density-functional theory which allows calculations on systems with a large number of atoms per cell. Different quantities like bond distances, Young moduli, Poisson ratio and the frequencies of different phonon branches are monitored versus tube radius. The validity of expectations based on graphite is explored down to small radii, where some deviations appear relat…
We report the electronic properties of the quadruple perovskite CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ as obtained via several density-functional based methods, and propose a new interpretation of optical experiments to the effect that four distinct transitions (centered around 0.7, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 eV) contribute to the spectrum. The comparison with experiment is satisfactory, especially after we account for the effects of spin disorder, which does not close the fundamental gap but suppresses the transition intensity. We find that some of the methods we employ tend to overestimate considerably the gaps …
We report a comprehensive study of the binary systems of the platinum group metals with the transition metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict stability of new compounds in 38 binary systems where no compounds have been reported in the literature experimentally, and a few dozen of as yet unreported compounds in additional systems. Our calculations also identify stable structures at compound compositions that have been previously reported without detailed structural data and indicate that some experimentally reported compounds may actually be unst…
By carrying out density functional theory (DFT) analysis within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, we investigate the quantum transport properties of Au-C60-Au molecular junctions from the first principles. We briefly review the NEGF-DFT formalism and present some of our data. We found that at small electrode separations (9-13 Angstrom), the Au-C60-Au junctions show metallic behaviour with conductance G ~ 2e^{2}/h and current I ~ 1-3 microAmpere in the linear regime (bias voltage V < 0.3 Volt). The physical mechanism is the resonance tunnelling through partially occ…
A mechanism of the high temperature ferromagnetism in polymerized fullerenes is suggested. It is assumed that some of the C$_{60}$ molecules in the crystal become magnetically active due to spin and charge transfer from the paramagnetic impurities (atoms or groups), such as hydrogen, fluorine, hydroxyl group OH, amino group NH$_2$, or methyl group CH$_3$, dispersed in the fullerene matrix. The exchange interaction between the spins localized on the magnetically active fullerenes is evaluated using \textit{ab initio} calculations. The nearest neighbour and next nearest neighbour exchange intera…
Ab initio studies of structural, elastic and electronic properties of the tetragonal perovskite-type PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 are presented using the pseudo-potential plane wave method within the density functional theory in generalized gradient approximation. The calculated equilibrium lattice parameters remain in a good agreement with the available experimental data. The bulk modulus obtained from the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state is calculated as B0=170 GPa, and the gap energy Eg=2.1 eV-3.5 eV. The some differences between calculated and nominal charges exist for all atoms. The biggest ones are o…
As a second part of a previous paper, here the calculated electronic band structure of ideal Pt(100) and Pt(110) surfaces, studied using density functional theory and the empirical tight-binding method, is presented. A detailed discussion of the surface- and resonance--states is given. It is shown that the calculated surface- and resonance--states of ideal Pt(100) surfaces agree very well with the available experimental data. For Pt(110), some of the surface- and resonance-states are characteristic of the low degree of symmetry of the surface and are identified as being independent of surface …
The Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ intermetallic compound has been studied intensely for several decades; its low-temperature state is reported experimentally either as ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic by different authors, with a measured ordering temperature ranging within a hundred Kelvin. The existing theoretical investigations overestimate the experimental total magnetic moment of Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ by 20-40 % and predict a ferromagnetic ground state. By means of first-principle electronic structure calculations, we show that the total magnetic moment of Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ can be reproduced within the Local…
The alchemical mixing approximation which is the ab initio pseudopotential specific implementation of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA), offered in the ABINIT package, has been employed to study the wurtzite (WZ) and zinc blende (ZB) InxGa(1-x)N alloy from first principles. The investigations were focused on structural properties (the equilibrium geometries), elastic properties (elastic constants and their pressure derivatives), and on the band-gap. Owing to the ABINIT functionality of calculating the Hellmann-Feynmann stresses, the elastic constants have been evaluated directly from the…
We have performed an ab initio investigation of the energetic stability, and the electronic properties of transition metals (TMs = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ru) adsorbed on graphene upon the presence of grain boundaries (GBs). Our results reveal an energetic preference for the TMs lying along the GB sites (TM/GB). Such an energetic preference has been strengthened by increasing the concentration of the TM adatoms; giving rise to TM nanolines on graphene ruled by GBs. Further diffusion barrier calculations for Fe adatoms support the formation of those TM nanolines. We find that the energy barriers parall…
So far, the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) is the only possible quantized signal in Weyl semimetals. With inversion and mirror symmetries broken, Weyl and multifold fermions in band structures with opposite chiralities can stay at different energies and generate a net topological charge. Such kind of net topological charge can present as a quantized signal in the circular polarized light induced injection current. According to current theoretical understanding, RhSi and its counterparts are believed to be the most promising candidate for the experimental observation of the quantized CPGE…
We present in detail the recently derived ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 096403 (2008)], which due to its numerical properties, is ideal for simulating the dynamics of systems containing thousands of atoms. A major drawback of traditional AIMD methods is the necessity to enforce the orthogonalization of the wave-functions, which can become the bottleneck for very large systems. Alternatively, one can handle the electron-ion dynamics within the Ehrenfest scheme where no explicit orthogonalization is necessary, however the time step is too small for practical…
