We report ab initio calculations of the electronic band structure, the corresponding optical spectra, and the phonon dispersion relations of trigonal alpha-HgS (cinnabar). The calculated dielectric functions are compared with unpublished optical measurements by Zallen and coworkers. The phonon dispersion relations are used to calculate the temperature and isotopic mass dependence of the specific heat which has been compared with experimental data obtained on samples with the natural isotope abundances of the elements Hg and S (natural minerals and vapor phase grown samples) and on samples prepared from isotope enriched elements by vapor phase transport. Comparison of the calculated vibrational frequencies with Raman and ir data is also presented. Contrary to the case of cubic beta-HgS (metacinnabar), the spin-orbit splitting of the top valence bands at the Gamma-point of the Brillouin zone (Delta_0) is positive, because of a smaller admixture of 5d core electrons of Hg. Calculations of the lattice parameters, and the pressure dependence of Delta_0 and the corresponding direct gap E_0~2eV are also presented. The lowest absorption edge is confirmed to be indirect.
Molecular dynamics calculations were preformed on organic crystals 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) and 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS). Vibrational modes of the structures were investigated to examine the single unit cell phononic contribution of the organic crystals to their terahertz generating capabilities. Linear optical properties were also calculated from snapshots of the molecular dynamics structures through Green-Kubo relations, and compared with experimental transmission.
Femtosecond optical pulses at mid-infrared frequencies have opened up the nonlinear control of lattice vibrations in solids. So far, all applications have relied on second order phonon nonlinearities, which are dominant at field strengths near 1 MVcm-1. In this regime, nonlinear phononics can transiently change the average lattice structure, and with it the functionality of a material. Here, we achieve an order-of-magnitude increase in field strength, and explore higher-order lattice nonlinearities. We drive up to five phonon harmonics of the A1 mode in LiNbO3. Phase-sensitive measurements of …
Phononic properties are commonly studied by calculating force constants using the density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Although DFT simulations offer accurate estimations of phonon dispersion relations or thermal properties, but for low-symmetry and nanoporous structures the computational cost quickly becomes very demanding. Moreover, the computational setups may yield nonphysical imaginary frequencies in the phonon dispersion curves, impeding the assessment of phononic properties and the dynamical stability of the considered system. Here, we compute phonon dispersion relations and exa…
Over the past thirty years, it has been consistently observed that surface engineering of colloidal nanocrystals (NC) is key to their performance parameters. In the case of lead chalcogenide NCs, for example, replacing thiols with halide anion surface termination has been shown to increase power conversion efficiency in NC-based solar cells. To gain insight into the origins of these improvements, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) on experimentally-relevant sized lead sulfide (PbS) NCs constructed with thiol or Cl, Br, and I anion surfaces. The surface of both the thiol- and halide…
Elemental 2D materials exhibit intriguing heat transport and phononic properties. Here we have investigated the lattice thermal conductivity of newly proposed arsenene, the 2D honeycomb structure of arsenic, using {\it ab initio} calculations. Solving the Boltzmann transport equation for phonons, we predict a highly anisotropic thermal conductivity, of $30.4$ and $7.8$ W/mK along the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively at room temperature. Our calculations reveal that phonons with mean free paths between $20$ nm and $1$ $μ$m provide the main contribution to the large thermal conductiv…
The availability of ab initio electronic calculations and the concomitant techniques for deriving the corresponding lattice dynamics have been profusely used for calculating thermodynamic and vibrational properties of semiconductors, as well as their dependence on isotopic masses. The latter have been compared with experimental data for elemental and binary semiconductors with different isotopic compositions. Here we present theoretical and experimental data for several vibronic and thermodynamic properties of CuGa2, a canonical ternary semiconductor of the chalcopyrite family. Among these pro…
We present experimental and theoretical investigations of phonon thermal transport in (LaMnO$_3$)$_m$/(SrMnO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices (LMO/SMO SLs) with the thickness of individual layers $m,n = 3 - 10\;$ u.c. and the thickness ratio $m/n = 1, 2$. Optical transient thermal reflectivity measurements reveal a pronounced difference in the thermal conductivity between SLs with $m/n = 1$, and SLs with $m/n = 2$. State-of-the art electron microscopy techniques and ab-initio density functional calculations enables us to assign the origin of this difference to the absence ($m/n = 1$) or presence ($m/n =…
We present a comparative ab initio study of Li, Na, and Mg storage in tin, including phononic effects and phase competition between alpha and beta Sn. Mg doping at low concentration is found to stabilize the beta phase. On the contrary, Li and Na doping is shown to reverse the stability of the phases at room temperature: Li/Na-doped alpha-Sn is more stable than Li/Na-doped beta-Sn up to a temperature of around 380/400 K. This may rationalize the formation of alpha-Sn upon lithiation and delithiation of beta-Sn anodes reported in experimental studies. The changes in phase stability with Li/Na/M…
Helium spin echo experiments combined with ab initio-based Langevin molecular dynamics simulations are used to quantify the adsorbate-substrate coupling during the thermal diffusion of Na atoms on Cu(111). An analysis of trajectories within the local density friction approximation allows the contribution from electron-hole pair excitations to be separated from the total energy dissipation. Despite the minimal electronic friction coefficient of Na and the relatively small mass mismatch to Cu promoting efficient phononic dissipation, about $(20\pm5)\%$ of the total energy loss is attributable to…
We present an open-source program irvsp, to compute irreducible representations of electronic states for all 230 space groups with an interface to the Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package. This code is fed with plane-wave-based wavefunctions (e.g. WAVECAR) and space group operators (listed in OUTCAR), which are generated by the VASP package. This program computes the traces of matrix presentations and determines the corresponding irreducible representations for all energy bands and all the k-points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. It also works with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), i.e., for …
Using ab initio method we have studied the structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of AlB2 and TaB2. We have used plane wave pseudopotential with generalised gradient approximation as implemented in CASTEP program. The independent elastic constants, bulk modulus, Young's modulus, shear modulus, anisotropic factor, Pugh ratio, etc are calculated. This results show that AlB2 and TaB2 are mechanically stable. We have also calculated the band structure and density of states. Band structure results show that AlB2 and TaB2 show metallic behaviour. In order to understand…
We report here ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of structural, elastic, Peierls stress, thermodynamic and optical properties of RRh3B (R = Y, Zr and Nb) using the plane wave psedudopotential method. The materials possess better ductile behavior in comparison with a selection of layered MAX phases but the anisotropy is strong, particularly in NbRh3B. The Peierls stress, approximately 3-4 times larger than in MAX phases, show that dislocation movement may follow but with much reduced occurrences compared to MAX phases. The temperature and pressure dependence of bulk modulus…
