Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) provides an alternative framework to model optimization problems with both discrete and continuous variables. The key idea behind GDP involves the use of logical disjunctions to represent discrete decisions in the continuous space, and logical propositions to denote algebraic constraints in the discrete space. Compared to traditional mixed-integer programming (MIP), the inherent logic structure in GDP yields tighter relaxations that are exploited by global branch and bound algorithms to improve solution quality. In this paper, we present a general GDP model for optimal control of hybrid systems that exhibit both discrete and continuous dynamics. Specifically, we use GDP to formulate a model predictive control (MPC) model for piecewise-affine systems with implicit switching logic. As an example, the GDP-based MPC approach is used as a supervisory control to improve energy efficiency in residential buildings with binary on/off, relay-based thermostats. A simulation study is used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, and the improved solution quality compared to existing MIP-based control approaches.
This paper investigates an efficient algorithm for trajectory planning problem of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles which fly over three-dimensional terrains. The proposed algorithm combines convex optimization with disjunctive programming and receding horizon concept, which has many advantages, such as a high computational speed. Disjunctive programming is applied in order to relax the non-convex constraints of the problem. Moreover, the B-spline curves are employed to represent the trajectories which should be generated in the optimization process.
Optimization problems with discrete-continuous decisions are traditionally modeled in algebraic form via (non)linear mixed-integer programming. A more systematic approach to modeling such systems is to use Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP), which extends the Disjunctive Programming paradigm proposed by Egon Balas to allow modeling systems from a logic-based level of abstraction that captures the fundamental rules governing such systems via algebraic constraints and logic. Although GDP provides a more general way of modeling systems, it warrants further generalization to encompass syste…
Mathematical programs with disjunctive constraints (MPDCs for short) cover several different problem classes from nonlinear optimization including complementarity-, vanishing-, cardinality-, and switching-constrained optimization problems. In this paper, we introduce an abstract but reasonable version of the prominent linear independence constraint qualification which applies to MPDCs. Afterwards, we derive first- and second-order optimality conditions for MPDCs under validity of this constraint qualification based on so-called strongly stationary points. Finally, we apply our findings to some…
In optimization problems, often equations and inequalities are represented using if-else (implication) construct which is known to be equivalent to a disjunction. Such statements are modeled and incorporated in an optimization problem using Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP). GDP provides a systematic methodology to model optimization problems involving logic disjunctions, logic propositions, and algebraic equations. In order to take advantage of the existing MINLP solvers, GDP problems can be reformulated as the standard MINLP problems. In this work we propose a novel reformulation met…
We address the issue of generating cutting planes for mixed integer programs from multiple rows of the simplex tableau with the tools of disjunctive programming. A cut from q rows of the simplex tableau is an intersection cuts from a q-dimensional parametric cross-polytope, which can also be viewed as a disjunctive cut from a 2q-term disjunction. We define the disjunctive hull of the q-row problem, describe its relation to the integer hull, and show how to generate its facets. For the case of binary basic variables, we derive cuts from the stronger disjunctions whose terms are equations. We gi…
An optimization problem considering AC power flow constraints and integer decision variables can usually be posed as a mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic program (MIQCQP) problem. In this paper, first, a set of valid linear equalities are applied to strengthen the semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation of the MIQCQP problem without significantly increasing the problem dimension so that an enhanced mixed-integer SDP (MISDP) relaxation, which is a mixed-integer convex problem, is obtained. Then, the enhanced MISDP relaxation is reformulated as a disjunctive programming (DP) problem…
In the 1970's, Balas introduced the concept of disjunctive programming, which is optimization over unions of polyhedra. One main result of his theory is that, given linear descriptions for each of the polyhedra to be taken in the union, one can easily derive an extended formulation of the convex hull of the union of these polyhedra. In this paper, we give a generalization of this result by extending the polyhedral structure of the variables coupling the polyhedra taken in the union. Using this generalized concept, we derive polynomial size linear programming formulations (compact formulations)…
We address the aircraft conflict resolution problem in air traffic control. We introduce new mixed-integer programming formulations for aircraft conflict resolution with speed, heading and altitude control which are based on disjunctive linear separation conditions. We first examine the two-dimensional aircraft conflict resolution problem with speed and heading control represented as continuous decision variables. We show that the proposed disjunctive linear separation conditions are equivalent to the traditional nonlinear conditions for aircraft separation. Further, we characterize conflict-f…
This paper introduces the proximally stabilized Fischer-Burmeister method (FBstab); a new algorithm for convex quadratic programming that synergistically combines the proximal point algorithm with a primal-dual semismooth Newton-type method. FBstab is numerically robust, easy to warmstart, handles degenerate primal-dual solutions, detects infeasibility/unboundedness and requires only that the Hessian matrix be positive semidefinite. We outline the algorithm, provide convergence and convergence rate proofs, report some numerical results from model predictive control benchmarks, and also include…
In this paper, we propose a stochastic method for solving equality constrained optimization problems that utilizes predictive variance reduction. Specifically, we develop a method based on the sequential quadratic programming paradigm that employs variance reduction in the gradient approximations. Under reasonable assumptions, we prove that a measure of first-order stationarity evaluated at the iterates generated by our proposed algorithm converges to zero in expectation from arbitrary starting points, for both constant and adaptive step size strategies. Finally, we demonstrate the practical p…
This paper considers solving convex quadratic programs (QPs) in a real-time setting using a regularized and smoothed Fischer-Burmeister method (FBRS). The Fischer-Burmeister function is used to map the optimality conditions of the quadratic program to a nonlinear system of equations which is solved using Newton's method. Regularization and smoothing are applied to improve the practical performance of the algorithm and a merit function is used to globalize convergence. FBRS is simple to code, easy to warmstart, robust to early termination, and has attractive theoretical properties, making it ap…
In this study, a microgrid with storage (battery, hot water tank) and solar panel is considered. We benchmark two algorithms, MPC and SDDP, that yield online policies to manage the microgrid, and compare them with a rule based policy. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a well-known algorithm which models the future uncertainties with a deterministic forecast. By contrast, Stochastic Dual Dynamic Programming (SDDP) models the future uncertainties as stagewise independent random variables with known probability distributions. We present a scheme, based on out-of-sample validation, to fairly compa…
Model Predictive Static Programming (MPSP) was always used under the assumption of continuous control, which impedes it for applications with bang-off-bang control directly. In this paper, MPSP is employed for the first time as a guidance scheme for low-thrust transfers with bang-off-bang control where the fuel-optimal trajectory is used as the nominal solution. In our method, dynamical equations in Cartesian coordinates are augmented by the mass costate equation, while the unconstrained velocity costate vector is used as control variable, and is expressed as a combination of Fourier basis fun…
In this paper, we develop a method for computing controlled invariant sets using Semidefinite Programming. We apply our method to the controller design problem for switching affine systems with polytopic safe sets. The task is reduced to a semidefinite programming problem by enforcing an invariance relation in the dual space of the geometric problem. The paper ends with an application to safety critical model predictive control.
This paper introduces HPIPM, a high-performance framework for quadratic programming (QP), designed to provide building blocks to efficiently and reliably solve model predictive control problems. HPIPM currently supports three QP types, and provides interior point method (IPM) solvers as well (partial) condensing routines. In particular, the IPM for optimal control QPs is intended to supersede the HPMPC solver, and it largely improves robustness while keeping the focus on speed. Numerical experiments show that HPIPM reliably solves challenging QPs, and that it outperforms other state-of-the-art…
We study the problem of designing attacks to safety-critical systems in which the adversary seeks to maximize the overall system cost within a model predictive control framework. Although in general this problem is NP-hard, we characterize a family of problems that can be solved in polynomial time via a second-order cone programming relaxation. In particular, we show that positive systems fall under this family. We provide examples demonstrating the design of optimal attacks on an autonomous vehicle and a microgrid.
Maintenance planning plays a key role in power system operations under uncertainty by helping system operators ensure a reliable and secure power grid. This paper studies a short-term condition-based integrated maintenance planning with operations scheduling problem while considering the unexpected failure possibilities of generators as well as transmission lines. We formulate this problem as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer program with failure scenarios sampled from the sensor-driven remaining lifetime distributions of the individual system elements whereas a joint chance-constraint cons…
In this paper we propose a constrained guaranteed cost robust model predictive controller (GCMPC) for uncertain discrete time systems. This controller was developed based on a quadratic cost functional and guarantee robustness with respect to quadratically bound uncertainties. Such a class of problems is currently intractable by Min-Max Robust Model Predictive Controllers without polytopic approximations of the uncertainties. The proposed technique is computationally more efficient then an enumeration-based approach and requires only a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Problem (QCQP) optimiz…

Today's fast linear algebra and numerical optimization tools have pushed the frontier of model predictive control (MPC) forward, to the efficient control of highly nonlinear and hybrid systems. The field of hybrid MPC has demonstrated that exact optimal control law can be computed, e.g., by mixed-integer programming (MIP) under piecewise-affine (PWA) system models. Despite the elegant theory, online solving hybrid MPC is still out of reach for many applications. We aim to speed up MIP by combining geometric insights from hybrid MPC, a simple-yet-effective learning algorithm, and MIP warm start…
The paper develops a Model Predictive Controller for constrained control of spacecraft attitude with reaction wheel actuators. The controller exploits a special formulation of the cost with the reference governor like term, a low complexity addition of integral action to guarantee offset-free tracking of attitude set points, and an online optimization algorithm for the solution of the Quadratic Programming problem which is tailored to run in fixed-point arithmetic. Simulations on a nonlinear spacecraft model demonstrate that the MPC controller achieves good tracking performance while satisfyin…
We consider the Chance Constrained Model Predictive Control problem for polynomial systems subject to disturbances. In this problem, we aim at finding optimal control input for given disturbed dynamical system to minimize a given cost function subject to probabilistic constraints, over a finite horizon. The control laws provided have a predefined (low) risk of not reaching the desired target set. Building on the theory of measures and moments, a sequence of finite semidefinite programmings are provided, whose solution is shown to converge to the optimal solution of the original problem. Numeri…
Mixed integer predictive control deals with optimizing integer and real control variables over a receding horizon. The mixed integer nature of controls might be a cause of intractability for instances of larger dimensions. To tackle this little issue, we propose a decomposition method which turns the original $n$-dimensional problem into $n$ indipendent scalar problems of lot sizing form. Each scalar problem is then reformulated as a shortest path one and solved through linear programming over a receding horizon. This last reformulation step mirrors a standard procedure in mixed integer progra…
We propose a tube-based guaranteed cost model predictive controller considering a homothetic formulation for constrained linear systems subject to multiplicative structured norm-bounded uncertainties. It provides an upper bound to the general min-max model predictive control. The invariance property of the proposed tube holds for any arbitrary scaling. It yields a second-order cone programming problem which is less computationally expensive than standard semi-definite programming problems. We also present a numerical example with a comparative study among the proposed approach, an open-loop gu…
In this paper, we propose a model predictive control (MPC) method for real-time intervention of spreading processes, such as epidemics and wildfire, over large-scale networks. The goal is to allocate budgeted resources each time step to minimize the risk of an undetected outbreak, i.e. the product of the probability of an outbreak and the impact of that outbreak. By using dynamic programming relaxation, the MPC controller is reformulated as a convex optimization problem, in particular an exponential cone programming. We also provide sufficient conditions for the closed-loop risks to asymptotic…
Predictive control is frequently used for control problems involving constraints. Being an optimization based technique utilizing a user specified so-called stage cost, performance properties, i.e., bounds on the infinite horizon accumulated stage cost, aside closed-loop stability are of interest. To achieve good performance and to influence the region of attraction associated with the prediction horizon, the terminal cost of the predictive controller's optimization objective is a key design factor. Approximate dynamic programming refers to one particular approximation paradigm that pursues it…
