In the 1970's, Balas introduced the concept of disjunctive programming, which is optimization over unions of polyhedra. One main result of his theory is that, given linear descriptions for each of the polyhedra to be taken in the union, one can easily derive an extended formulation of the convex hull of the union of these polyhedra. In this paper, we give a generalization of this result by extending the polyhedral structure of the variables coupling the polyhedra taken in the union. Using this generalized concept, we derive polynomial size linear programming formulations (compact formulations) for a well-known spanning tree approximation of Steiner trees, for Gomory-Hu trees, and, as a consequence, of the minimum $T$-cut problem (but not for the associated $T$-cut polyhedron). Recently, Kaibel and Loos (2010) introduced a more involved framework called {\em polyhedral branching systems} to derive extended formulations. The most parts of our model can be expressed in terms of their framework. The value of our model can be seen in the fact that it completes their framework by an interesting algorithmic aspect.
This paper investigates an efficient algorithm for trajectory planning problem of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles which fly over three-dimensional terrains. The proposed algorithm combines convex optimization with disjunctive programming and receding horizon concept, which has many advantages, such as a high computational speed. Disjunctive programming is applied in order to relax the non-convex constraints of the problem. Moreover, the B-spline curves are employed to represent the trajectories which should be generated in the optimization process.
We address the issue of generating cutting planes for mixed integer programs from multiple rows of the simplex tableau with the tools of disjunctive programming. A cut from q rows of the simplex tableau is an intersection cuts from a q-dimensional parametric cross-polytope, which can also be viewed as a disjunctive cut from a 2q-term disjunction. We define the disjunctive hull of the q-row problem, describe its relation to the integer hull, and show how to generate its facets. For the case of binary basic variables, we derive cuts from the stronger disjunctions whose terms are equations. We gi…
Optimization problems with discrete-continuous decisions are traditionally modeled in algebraic form via (non)linear mixed-integer programming. A more systematic approach to modeling such systems is to use Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP), which extends the Disjunctive Programming paradigm proposed by Egon Balas to allow modeling systems from a logic-based level of abstraction that captures the fundamental rules governing such systems via algebraic constraints and logic. Although GDP provides a more general way of modeling systems, it warrants further generalization to encompass syste…
Mathematical programs with disjunctive constraints (MPDCs for short) cover several different problem classes from nonlinear optimization including complementarity-, vanishing-, cardinality-, and switching-constrained optimization problems. In this paper, we introduce an abstract but reasonable version of the prominent linear independence constraint qualification which applies to MPDCs. Afterwards, we derive first- and second-order optimality conditions for MPDCs under validity of this constraint qualification based on so-called strongly stationary points. Finally, we apply our findings to some…
We present a framework for constructing strong mixed-integer programming formulations for logical disjunctive constraints. Our approach is a generalization of the logarithmically-sized formulations of Vielma and Nemhauser for SOS2 constraints, and we offer a complete characterization of its expressive power. We apply the framework to a variety of disjunctive constraints, producing novel small and strong formulations for outer approximations of multilinear terms, generalizations of special ordered sets, piecewise linear functions over a variety of domains, and obstacle avoidance constraints.
An important problem in optimization is the construction of mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations of disjunctive constraints that are both strong and small. Motivated by lower bounds on the number of integer variables that are required by traditional MIP formulations, we present a more general mixed-integer branching formulation framework. Our approach maintains favorable algorithmic properties of traditional MIP formulations: in particular, amenability to branch-and-bound and branch-and-cut algorithms. Our main technical result gives an explicit linear inequality description for both t…
We introduce techniques to build small ideal mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations of combinatorial disjunctive constraints (CDCs) via the independent branching scheme. We present a novel pairwise IB-representable class of CDCs, CDCs admitting junction trees, and provide a combinatorial procedure to build MIP formulations for those constraints. Generalized special ordered sets ($\text{SOS} k$) can be modeled by CDCs admitting junction trees and we also obtain MIP formulations of $\text{SOS} k$. Furthermore, we provide a novel ideal extended formulation of any combinatorial disjunctive c…
Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) provides an alternative framework to model optimization problems with both discrete and continuous variables. The key idea behind GDP involves the use of logical disjunctions to represent discrete decisions in the continuous space, and logical propositions to denote algebraic constraints in the discrete space. Compared to traditional mixed-integer programming (MIP), the inherent logic structure in GDP yields tighter relaxations that are exploited by global branch and bound algorithms to improve solution quality. In this paper, we present a general GDP …
We address the aircraft conflict resolution problem in air traffic control. We introduce new mixed-integer programming formulations for aircraft conflict resolution with speed, heading and altitude control which are based on disjunctive linear separation conditions. We first examine the two-dimensional aircraft conflict resolution problem with speed and heading control represented as continuous decision variables. We show that the proposed disjunctive linear separation conditions are equivalent to the traditional nonlinear conditions for aircraft separation. Further, we characterize conflict-f…
In optimization problems, often equations and inequalities are represented using if-else (implication) construct which is known to be equivalent to a disjunction. Such statements are modeled and incorporated in an optimization problem using Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP). GDP provides a systematic methodology to model optimization problems involving logic disjunctions, logic propositions, and algebraic equations. In order to take advantage of the existing MINLP solvers, GDP problems can be reformulated as the standard MINLP problems. In this work we propose a novel reformulation met…
An optimization problem considering AC power flow constraints and integer decision variables can usually be posed as a mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic program (MIQCQP) problem. In this paper, first, a set of valid linear equalities are applied to strengthen the semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation of the MIQCQP problem without significantly increasing the problem dimension so that an enhanced mixed-integer SDP (MISDP) relaxation, which is a mixed-integer convex problem, is obtained. Then, the enhanced MISDP relaxation is reformulated as a disjunctive programming (DP) problem…
Decades of advances in mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and recent development in mixed-integer second-order-cone programming (MISOCP) have translated very mildly to progresses in global solving nonconvex mixed-integer quadratically constrained programs (MIQCP). In this paper we propose a new approach, namely Compact Disjunctive Approximation (CDA), to approximate nonconvex MIQCP to arbitrary precision by \textit{convex} MIQCPs, which can be solved by MISOCP solvers. For nonconvex MIQCP with $n$ variables and $m$ general quadratic constraints, our method yields relaxations with at most …
There is often a significant trade-off between formulation strength and size in mixed integer programming (MIP). When modeling convex disjunctive constraints (e.g. unions of convex sets), adding auxiliary continuous variables can sometimes help resolve this trade-off. However, standard formulations that use such auxiliary continuous variables can have a worse-than-expected computational effectiveness, which is often attributed precisely to these auxiliary continuous variables. For this reason, there has been considerable interest in constructing strong formulations that do not use continuous a…
It is well known that selecting a good Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation is crucial for an effective solution with state-of-the art solvers. While best practices and guidelines for constructing good formulations abound, there is rarely a systematic construction leading to the best possible formulation. We introduce embedding formulations and complexity as a new MIP formulation paradigm for systematically constructing formulations for disjunctive constraints that are optimal with respect to size. More specifically, they yield the smallest possible ideal formulation (i.e. one whose LP …
The secure domination problem, a variation of the domination problem with some important real-world applications, is considered. Very few algorithmic attempts to solve this problem have been presented in literature, and the most successful to date is a binary programming formulation which is solved using CPLEX. A new binary programming formulation is proposed here which requires fewer constraints and fewer binary variables than the existing formulation. It is implemented in CPLEX, and tested on certain families of graphs that have previously been considered in the context of secure domination.…
We consider the problem of finding a minimum common partition of two strings (MCSP). The problem has its application in genome comparison. MCSP problem is proved to be NP-hard. In this paper, we develop an Integer Programming (IP) formulation for the problem and implement it. The experimental results are compared with the previous state-of-the-art algorithms and are found to be promising.
This paper presents a mixed-integer quadratic programming formulation of an existing data-driven approach to computational elasticity. This formulation is suitable for application of a standard mixed-integer programming solver, which finds a global optimal solution. Therefore, the results obtained by the presented method can be used as benchmark instances for any other algorithm. Preliminary numerical experiments are performed to compare quality of solutions obtained by the proposed method and a heuristic used in the data-driven computational mechanics.
We introduce and study the infinite dimensional linear programming problem which along with its dual allows one to characterize the optimal value of the deterministic long-run average optimal control problem in the general case when the latter may depend on the initial conditions of the system.
We give an explicit geometric way to build mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations for unions of polyhedra. The construction is simply described in terms of spanning hyperplanes in an r-dimensional linear space. The resulting MIP formulation is ideal, and uses exactly r integer variables and 2 x (# of spanning hyperplanes) general inequality constraints. We use this result to derive novel logarithmic-sized ideal MIP formulations for discontinuous piecewise linear functions and structures appearing in robotics and power systems problems.
This paper is devoted to a study of infinite horizon optimal control problems with time discounting and time averaging criteria in discrete time. We establish that these problems are related to certain infinite-dimensional linear programming (IDLP) problems. We also establish asymptotic relationships between the optimal values of problems with time discounting and long-run average criteria.
For a graph $G= (V,E)$, a double Roman dominating function (DRDF) is a function $f : V \to \{0,1,2,3\}$ having the property that if $f (v) = 0$, then vertex $v$ must have at least two neighbors assigned $2$ under $f$ or {at least} one neighbor $u$ with $f (u) = 3$, and if $f (v) = 1$, then vertex $v$ must have at least one neighbor $u$ with $f (u) \ge 2$. In this paper, we consider the double Roman domination problem, which is an optimization problem of finding the DRDF $f$ such that $\sum_{v\in V} f (v)$ is minimum. We propose {five integer linear programming (ILP) formulations and one mixed …
Power flow refers to the injection of power on the lines of an electrical grid, so that all the injections at the nodes form a consistent flow within the network. Optimality, in this setting, is usually intended as the minimization of the cost of generating power. Current can either be direct or alternating: while the former yields approximate linear programming formulations, the latter yields formulations of a much more interesting sort: namely, nonconvex nonlinear programs in complex numbers. In this technical survey, we derive formulation variants and relaxations of the alternating current …
Round robin tournaments are omnipresent in sport competitions and beyond. We propose two new integer programming formulations for scheduling a round robin tournament, one of which we call the matching formulation. We analytically compare their linear relaxations with the linear relaxation of a well-known traditional formulation. We find that the matching formulation is stronger than the other formulations, while its LP relaxation is still being solvable in polynomial time. In addition, we provide an exponentially sized class of valid inequalities for the matching formulation. Complementing our…
We present a unifying framework for generating extended formulations for the polyhedral outer approximations used in algorithms for mixed-integer convex programming (MICP). Extended formulations lead to fewer iterations of outer approximation algorithms and generally faster solution times. First, we observe that all MICP instances from the MINLPLIB2 benchmark library are conic representable with standard symmetric and nonsymmetric cones. Conic reformulations are shown to be effective extended formulations themselves because they encode separability structure. For mixed-integer conic-representa…
We present strong mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations for high-dimensional piecewise linear functions that correspond to trained neural networks. These formulations can be used for a number of important tasks, such as verifying that an image classification network is robust to adversarial inputs, or solving decision problems where the objective function is a machine learning model. We present a generic framework, which may be of independent interest, that provides a way to construct sharp or ideal formulations for the maximum of d affine functions over arbitrary polyhedral input domai…
The optimal binning is the optimal discretization of a variable into bins given a discrete or continuous numeric target. We present a rigorous and extensible mathematical programming formulation for solving the optimal binning problem for a binary, continuous and multi-class target type, incorporating constraints not previously addressed. For all three target types, we introduce a convex mixed-integer programming formulation. Several algorithmic enhancements, such as automatic determination of the most suitable monotonic trend via a Machine-Learning-based classifier and implementation aspects …
A standard quadratic program is an optimization problem that consists of minimizing a (nonconvex) quadratic form over the unit simplex. We focus on reformulating a standard quadratic program as a mixed integer linear programming problem. We propose two alternative mixed integer linear programming formulations. Our first formulation is based on casting a standard quadratic program as a linear program with complementarity constraints. We then employ binary variables to linearize the complementarity constraints. For the second formulation, we first derive an overestimating function of the objecti…
The Graphical Traveling Salesperson Problem (GTSP) is the problem of assigning, for a given weighted graph, a nonnegative number $x_e$ each edge $e$ such that the induced multi-subgraph is of minimum weight among those that are spanning, connected and Eulerian. Naturally, known mixed-integer programming formulations use integer variables $x_e$ in addition to others. Denis Naddef posed the challenge of finding a (reasonably simple) mixed-integer programming formulation that has integrality constraints only on these edge variables. Recently, Carr and Simonetti (IPCO 2021) showed that such a form…
Due to their importance in practice, dominating set problems in graphs have been greatly studied in past and different formulations of these problems are presented in literature. This paper's focus is on two problems: weakly convex dominating set problem (WCVXDSP) and convex dominating set problem (CVXDSP). It introduces two integer linear programming (ILP) formulation for CVXDSP and one ILP mode for WCVXDSP, as well as proof for equivalency between ILP models for CVXDSP. The proof of correctness for all introduced ILP formulations is provided by showing that optimal solution to the each ILP f…
This paper presents a first continuous, linear, conic formulation for the Discrete Ordered Median Problem (DOMP). Starting from a binary, quadratic formulation in the original space of location and allocation variables that are common in Location Analysis (L.A.), we prove that there exists a transformation of that formulation, using the same space of variables, that allows us to cast DOMP as a continuous linear problem in the space of completely positive matrices. This is the first positive result that states equivalence between the family of continuous convex problems and some hard problems i…
This paper build on our recent work where we presented a dual stochastic optimal control formulation of the nonlinear filtering problem [1]. The constraint for the dual problem is a backward stochastic differential equations (BSDE). The solution is obtained via an application of the maximum principle (MP). In the present paper, a dynamic programming (DP) principle is presented for a special class of BSDE-constrained stochastic optimal control problems. The principle is applied to derive the solution of the nonlinear filtering problem.
In this paper we consider the use of extended formulations in LP-based algorithms for mixed integer conic quadratic programming (MICQP). Extended formulations have been used by Vielma, Ahmed and Nemhauser (2008) and Hijazi, Bonami and Ouorou (2013) to construct algorithms for MICQP that can provide a significant computational advantage. The first approach is based on an extended or lifted polyhedral relaxation of the Lorentz cone by Ben-Tal and Nemirovski (2001) that is extremely economical, but whose approximation quality cannot be iteratively improved. The second is based on a lifted polyhed…
The aim of this paper is to compare the performance of a local solution technique -- namely Sequential Linear Programming (SLP) employing random starting points -- with state-of-the-art global solvers such as Baron and more sophisticated local solvers such as Sequential Quadratic Programming and Interior Point for the pooling problem. These problems can have many local optima, and we present a small example that illustrates how this can occur. We demonstrate that SLP -- usually deemed obsolete since the arrival of fast reliable QP solvers, Interior Point Methods and sophisticated global solver…
The Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) seeks to find positions for a set of points in geometric space when some distances between pairs of these points are known. The so-called discretization assumptions allow to discretize the search space of DGP instances. In this paper, we study the Discretizable Molecular Distance Geometry Problem whose feasible solutions provide a discretization scheme for the DGP. We propose the first constraint programming formulations as well as a set of checks for proving infeasibility, domain reduction techniques, symmetry breaking constraints and valid inequalities. Ou…
We show that a certain tensor norm, the completely bounded norm, can be expressed by a semidefinite program. This tensor norm recently attracted attention in the field of quantum computing, where it was used by Arunachalam, Briët and Palazuelos for characterizing the quantum query complexity of Boolean functions. Combined with their results, we obtain a new characterization of the quantum query complexity through semidefinite programming. Using the duality theory of semidefinite programming we obtain a new type of certificates for large query complexity. We show that our class of certificates …
In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is proposed to solve the dynamic economic dispatch with valve-point effect (DED-VPE). Based on piecewise linearization technique, the non-convex and non-smooth generation cost is reformulated into a linear lower approximation which is better than the quadratic one, yielding an MILP formulation for the DED-VPE. When the segment parameter is set appropriately, the MILP formulation can be solved by a mixed integer programming (MIP) solver directly and efficiently. Thus, a global optimal solution within a preset tolerance can be …
We consider the constrained assortment optimization problem under the mixed multinomial logit model. Even moderately sized instances of this problem are challenging to solve directly using standard mixed-integer linear optimization formulations. This has motivated recent research exploring customized optimization strategies and approximation techniques. In contrast, we develop a novel conic quadratic mixed-integer formulation. This new formulation, together with McCormick inequalities exploiting the capacity constraints, enables the solution of large instances using commercial optimization sof…
Low levels of system inertia in power grids with significant penetration of non-synchronous Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have increased the risk of frequency instability. The provision of a certain type of ancillary services such as inertia and Frequency Response (FR) is needed at all times, to maintain system frequency within secure limits if the loss of a large power infeed were to occur. In this paper we propose a frequency-secured optimisation framework for the procurement of inertia and FR with diverse dynamics, which enables to apply a marginal-pricing scheme for these services. This p…
This paper addresses a mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation for the multi-item uncapacitated lot-sizing problem that is inspired from the trailer manufacturer. The proposed MIP model has been utilized to find out the optimum order quantity, optimum order time, and the minimum total cost of purchasing, ordering, and holding over the predefined planning horizon. This problem is known as NP-hard problem. The model was presented in an optimal software form using LINGO 13.0.
We study the McKean-Vlasov optimal control problem with common noise in various formulations, namely the strong and weak formulation, as well as the Markovian and non-Markovian formulations, and allowing for the law of the control process to appear in the state dynamics. By interpreting the controls as probability measures on an appropriate canonical space with two filtrations, we then develop the classical measurable selection, conditioning and concatenation arguments in this new context, and establish the dynamic programming principle under general conditions.
We present an ideal mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulation for a rectified linear unit (ReLU) appearing in a trained neural network. Our formulation requires a single binary variable and no additional continuous variables beyond the input and output variables of the ReLU. We contrast it with an ideal "extended" formulation with a linear number of additional continuous variables, derived through standard techniques. An apparent drawback of our formulation is that it requires an exponential number of inequality constraints, but we provide a routine to separate the inequalities in linear tim…
Network flow formulations are among the most successful tools to solve optimization problems. Such formulations correspond to determining an optimal flow in a network. One particular class of network flow formulations is the arc flow, where variables represent flows on individual arcs of the network. For $\mathcal{NP}$-hard problems, polynomial-sized arc flow models typically provide weak linear relaxations and may have too much symmetry to be efficient in practice. Instead, arc flow models with a pseudo-polynomial size usually provide strong relaxations and are efficient in practice. The inte…
Recent research in off-the-grid compressed sensing (CS) has demonstrated that, under certain conditions, one can successfully recover a spectrally sparse signal from a few time-domain samples even though the dictionary is continuous. In particular, atomic norm minimization was proposed in \cite{tang2012csotg} to recover $1$-dimensional spectrally sparse signal. However, in spite of existing research efforts \cite{chi2013compressive}, it was still an open problem how to formulate an equivalent positive semidefinite program for atomic norm minimization in recovering signals with $d$-dimensional …
We present a methodology for computing the flexibility index when uncertainty is characterized using multivariate Gaussian random variables. Our approach computes the flexibility index by solving a mixed-integer conic program (MICP). This methodology directly characterizes ellipsoidal sets to capture correlations in contrast to previous methodologies that employ approximations. We also show that, under a Gaussian representation, the flexibility index can be used to obtain a lower bound for the so-called stochastic flexibility index (i.e., the probability of having feasible operation). Our resu…
