In this paper, we develop a method for computing controlled invariant sets using Semidefinite Programming. We apply our method to the controller design problem for switching affine systems with polytopic safe sets. The task is reduced to a semidefinite programming problem by enforcing an invariance relation in the dual space of the geometric problem. The paper ends with an application to safety critical model predictive control.
The study of controlled hybrid systems requires practical tools for approximation and comparison of system behaviors. Existing approaches to these problems impose undue restrictions on the system's continuous and discrete dynamics. Metrization and simulation of controlled hybrid systems is considered here in a unified framework by constructing a state space metric. The metric is applied to develop a numerical simulation algorithm that converges uniformly, with a known rate of convergence, to orbitally stable executions of controlled hybrid systems, up to and including Zeno events. Benchmark hy…
This paper details an investigation into the computational performance of algorithms used for solving a convex formulation of the optimization problem associated with model predictive control for energy management in hybrid electric vehicles with nonlinear losses. A projected interior point method is proposed, where the size and complexity of the Newton step matrix inversion is reduced by applying inequality constraints on the control input as a projection, and its properties are demonstrated through simulation in comparison with an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm,…
One of the major limitations of optimization-based strategies for allocating the power flow in hybrid powertrains is that they rely on predictions of future power demand. These predictions are inherently uncertain as they are dependent on complex human behaviours that are challenging to model accurately. This paper proposes a data-based scenario model predictive control framework, where the inputs are determined at each control update by optimizing the power allocation over multiple previous examples of a route being driven. The proposed energy management optimization is convex, and results fr…
This paper presents a nonlinear-model based hybrid optimal control technique to compute a suboptimal power-split strategy for power/energy management in a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The power-split strategy is obtained as model predictive control solution to the power management control problem (PMCP) of the PHEV, i.e., to decide upon the power distribution among the internal combustion engine, an electric drive, and other subsystems. A hierarchical control structure of the hybrid vehicle, i.e., supervisory level and local or subsystem level is assumed in this study. The PMCP con…
For multiparametric mixed-integer convex programming problems such as those encountered in hybrid model predictive control, we propose an algorithm for generating a feasible partition of a subset of the parameter space. The result is a static map from the current parameter to a suboptimal integer solution such that the remaining convex program is feasible. Convergence is proven with a new insight that the overlap among the feasible parameter sets of each integer solution governs the partition complexity. The partition is stored as a tree which makes querying the feasible solution efficient. Th…
We present a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm for energy management in aircraft with hybrid electric propulsion systems consisting of gas turbine and electric motor components. Series and parallel configurations are considered. By combining a point-mass aircraft dynamical model with models of electrical losses and losses in the gas turbine, the fuel consumed over a given future flight path is minimised subject to constraints on the battery, electric motor and gas turbine. The optimization is formulated as a convex problem under mild assumptions and its solution is used to define a pred…
In this paper we propose a model predictive control scheme for constrained fractional-order discrete-time systems. We prove that all constraints are satisfied at all time instants and we prescribe conditions for the origin to be an asymptotically stable equilibrium point of the controlled system. We employ a finite-dimensional approximation of the original infinite-dimensional dynamics for which the approximation error can become arbitrarily small. We use the approximate dynamics to design a tube-based model predictive controller which steers the system state to a neighbourhood of the origin o…
Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) requires accurate and computationally efficient plant models. Our previous work has shown that the classical compartmentalization model reduction approach for distillation columns can be enhanced by replacing parts of the system of equations by artificial neural networks (ANNs) trained on offline solved solutions to improve computational performance. In real-life applications, the absence of a high-fidelity model for data generation can, however, prevent the deployment of this approach. Therefore, we propose a method that utilizes solely plant measurem…
Microgrids consisting of multiple distributed energy resources (DERs) provide a promising solution to integrate renewable energies, e.g., solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Hybrid AC/DC microgrids leverage the merits of both AC and DC power systems. In this paper, a control strategy for islanded multi-bus hybrid microgrids is proposed based on the Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) technologies. The control loops are expedited by predicting the future states and determining the optimal control action before switching signals are sent. The proposed algorithm eliminates the need…

Today's fast linear algebra and numerical optimization tools have pushed the frontier of model predictive control (MPC) forward, to the efficient control of highly nonlinear and hybrid systems. The field of hybrid MPC has demonstrated that exact optimal control law can be computed, e.g., by mixed-integer programming (MIP) under piecewise-affine (PWA) system models. Despite the elegant theory, online solving hybrid MPC is still out of reach for many applications. We aim to speed up MIP by combining geometric insights from hybrid MPC, a simple-yet-effective learning algorithm, and MIP warm start…
In this paper, we propose a minimax model predictive control (MPC)-based energy management system that is robust with respect to uncertainties in renewable infeed and load. The MPC formulation includes a model of low-level droop control with saturation at the power and energy limits of the units. Robust MPC-based energy management systems tend to under-utilize the renewable energy sources to guarantee safe operation. In order to mitigate this effect, we further consider droop control of renewable energy sources. For a microgrid with droop-controlled units, we show that enhancing droop feedback…
The optimization of process economics within the model predictive control (MPC) formulation has given rise to a new control paradigm known as economic MPC (EMPC). Several authors have discussed the closed-loop properties of EMPC-controlled deterministic systems, however, little have uncertain systems been studied. In this paper we propose EMPC formulations for nonlinear Markovian switching systems which guarantee recursive feasibility, asymptotic performance bounds and constrained mean square (MS) stability.
In hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC), a Mixed-Integer Quadratic Program (MIQP) is solved at each sampling time to compute the optimal control action. Although these optimizations are generally very demanding, in MPC we expect consecutive problem instances to be nearly identical. This paper addresses the question of how computations performed at one time step can be reused to accelerate (warm start) the solution of subsequent MIQPs. Reoptimization is not a rare practice in integer programming: for small variations of certain problem data, the branch-and-bound algorithm allows an efficient r…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a feedback control method that allows synchronizing the motion of a chain of several coupled nonlinear oscillators actuated through one end of the chain. The chain considered in this work is a one-dimensional array of pendulums pivoting around a single axis and interacting with adjacent pendulums through torsion springs; the array is actuated using a single torque motor attached to one of the two boundary pendulums. This represents a mechanical realization of the Frenkel-Kontorova model { a spatially discrete version of a sine-Gordon equation describin…

Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is an efficient approach for the control of nonlinear multivariable dynamic systems with constraints, which however requires an accurate plant model. Plant models can often be determined from first principles, parts of the model are however difficult to derive using physical laws alone. In this paper a hybrid Gaussian process (GP) first principles modeling scheme is proposed to overcome this issue, which exploits GPs to model the parts of the dynamic system that are difficult to describe using first principles. GPs not only give accurate predictions, b…
