We construct a map from the suspension $G$-spectrum $Σ_G^\infty M$ of a smooth compact $G$-manifold to the equivariant $A$-theory spectrum $A_G(M)$, and we show that its fiber is, on fixed points, a wedge of stable $h$-cobordism spectra. This map is constructed as a map of spectral Mackey functors, which is compatible with tom Dieck style splitting formulas on fixed points. In order to synthesize different definitions of the suspension $G$-spectrum as a spectral Mackey functor, we present a new perspective on spectral Mackey functors, viewing them as multifunctors on indexing categories for "rings on many objects" and modules over such. This perspective should be of independent interest.
We define parametrized cobordism categories and study their formal properties as bivariant theories. Bivariant transformations to a strongly excisive bivariant theory give rise to characteristic classes of smooth bundles with strong additivity properties. In the case of cobordisms between manifolds with boundary, we prove that such a bivariant transformation is uniquely determined by its value at the universal disk bundle. This description of bivariant transformations yields a short proof of the Dwyer-Weiss-Williams family index theorem for the parametrized A-theory Euler characteristic of a s…
For a finite group $G$, we define an equivariant cobordism category $\mathcal{C}_d^G$. Objects of the category are $(d-1)$-dimensional closed smooth $G$-manifolds and morphisms are smooth $d$-dimensional equivariant cobordisms. We identify the homotopy type of its classifying space (i.e. geometric realization of its simplicial nerve) as the fixed points of the infinite loop space of an equivariant spectrum.
We develop a theory of parametrized geometric cobordism by introducing smooth Thom stacks. This requires identifying and constructing a smooth representative of the Thom functor acting on vector bundles equipped with extra geometric data, leading to a geometric refinement of the the Pontrjagin-Thom construction in stacks. We demonstrate that the resulting theory generalizes the parametrized cobordism of Galatius-Madsen-Tillman-Weiss. The theory has the feature of being both versatile and general, allowing for the inclusion of families of various geometric data, such as metrics on manifolds and…
For a finite abelian group $G$, we compute the $G$-equivariant formal group law corresponding to the $G$-equivariant complex cobordism spectrum with its canonical complex orientation.
In this paper, we calculate the coefficient ring of equivariant Thom complex cobordism for the symmetric group on three elements. We also make some remarks on general methods of calculating certain pullbacks of rings which typically occur in calculations of equivariant cobordism.
For a torus G of rank r = 1, we showed that the canonical ring homomorphism L_G \to MU_G, where L_G is the equivariant Lazard ring and MU_G is the equivariant cobordism ring introduced by Tom Dieck, is surjective. We also showed that the completion map MU_G \to \hat{MU}_G = MU(BG) is injective. Moreover, we showed that the same results hold if we assume a certain algebraic property holds in L_G when r \geq 2.
Torus orbifolds are topological generalization of symplectic toric orbifolds. We give a construction of smooth orbifolds with torus actions whose boundary is a disjoint union of torus orbifolds using toric topological method. As a result, we show that any orientable locally standard torus orbifold is equivariantly cobordant to some copies of orbifold complex projective spaces. We also discuss some further equivariant cobordism results including the cases when torus orbifolds are actually torus manifolds.
Let A be a finite abelian group. We set up an algebraic framework for studying A-equivariant complex-orientable cohomology theories in terms of a suitable kind of equivariant formal groups. We compute the equivariant cohomology of many spaces in these terms, including projective bundles (and associated Gysin maps), Thom spaces, and infinite Grassmannians.
We introduce an equivariant Pontrjagin-Thom construction which identifies equivariant cohomotopy classes with certain fixed point bordism classes. This provides a concrete geometric model for equivariant cohomotopy which works for any compact Lie group G. In the special case when G is finite or a torus, we show that our construction recovers the construction of Wasserman, providing a new perspective on equivariant bordism. We connect the results with bordisms of global quotient orbifolds, utilizing the machinery of Gepner-Henriques to describe bordisms of framed orbifolds in terms of equivaria…
We introduce an equivariant algebraic cobordism theory Ω^G for algebraic varieties with G-action, where G is a split diagonalizable group scheme over a field k. It is done by combining the construction of the algebraic cobordism theory Ωby F. Morel and M. Levine, with the notion of (G, F)-formal group law with respect to a complete G-universe and complete G-flag F as introduced by M. Cole, J. P. C. Greenlees and I. Kriz. In particular, we use their corresponding representing ring L_G(F) in place of the Lazard ring L. We show that localization property and homotopy invariance property hold in Ω…
Let $\mathcal{N}_*$ be the unoriented cobordism algebra, let $G=(\Z_2)^n$ and let $Z_*(G)$ denote the equivariant cobordism algebra of $G$-manifolds with finite stationary point sets. Let $ε_* :Z_*(G) \to \mathcal{N}_*$ be the homomorphism which forgets the $G$-action. We use Milnor manifolds (degree 1 hypersurfaces in $\R P^m\times \R P^n$) to construct non-trivial elements in $Z_*(G)$. We prove that these elements give rise to indecomposable elements in $Z_*(G)$ in degrees up to $2^n - 5$. Moreover, in most cases these elements can be arranged to be in $\mathit{Ker}(ε_*)$.
Toric orbifolds are a generalization of simplicial projective toric varieties. In this paper, we show that there is a resolution of singularities of a toric orbifold. In a different category, the class of quasi-contact toric manifolds contains the class of good contact toric manifolds. We prove that a quasi-contact toric manifold is equivariantly a boundary. Moreover, we conclude that good contact toric manifolds and generalized lens spaces are equivariantly boundaries.
We apply results of Harada, Holm and Henriques to prove that the Atiyah-Segal equivariant complex $K$-theory ring of a divisive weighted projective space (which is singular for nontrivial weights) is isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise Laurent polynomials on the associated fan. Analogues of this description hold for other complex-oriented equivariant cohomology theories, as we confirm in the case of homotopical complex cobordism, which is the universal example. We also prove that the Borel versions of the equivariant $K$-theory and complex cobordism rings of more general singular tori…
We calculate the cobordism ring $Ω^{C_2}_*$ of stably almost complex manifolds with involution, and investigate the $C_2$-spectrum $Ω_{C_2}$ which represents it. We introduce the notion of a geometrically oriented $C_2$-spectrum, which extends the notion of a complex oriented $C_2$-spectrum, and of which $Ω_{C_2}$ is the universal example. Examples, in addition to $Ω_{C_2}$, include the Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum $H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{C_2}$ and the connective cover $k_{C_2}$ of $C_2$-equivariant $K$-theory. On the algebraic side, we define and study filtered $C_2$-equivariant formal group…
We show that the theory of stable complex $G$-cobordisms, for a torus $G$, is embedded into the theory of stable complex $G$-cobordisms of not necessarily compact manifolds equipped with proper abstract moment maps. Thus the introduction of such non-compact cobordisms in the stable complex $G$-cobordism theory does not lead to new relations.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the orientability of a locally standard 2-torus manifold with a fixed point which generalizes previous results of Nakayama-Nishimura in 2005 and Soprunova-Sottile in 2013. We construct manifolds with boundary where the boundary is a disjoint union of locally standard 2-torus manifolds. We discuss equivariant oriented cobordism class of locally standard 2-torus manifolds.
Extending our method for investigating Real cobordism (which was recently used by Hill, Hopkins and Ravenel in their solution of the Kervaire invariant 1 problem), we investigate the $RO(G)$-graded homotopy groups of a (non-complete) $\Z/2\times \Z/2$-equivariant spectrum called topological Hermitian cobordism. The methods of this paper may be useful in computing the homotopy groups of other $G$-equivariant spectra where $G\neq \Z/2$.
Fix a tangential structure $θ: B \longrightarrow BO(d+1)$ and an integer $k < d/2$. In this paper we determine the homotopy type of a cobordism category $\mathbf{Cob}^{\text{mf}, k}_θ$, where morphisms are given by $θ$-cobordisms $W: P \rightsquigarrow Q$ equipped with a choice of proper Morse function $h_{W}: W \longrightarrow [0, 1]$, with the property that all critical points $c \in W$ of $h_{W}$ satisfy the condition: $k < \text{index}(c) < d-k+1$. In particular, we prove that there is a weak homotopy equivalence $B\mathbf{Cob}^{\text{mf}, k}_θ \simeqΩ^{\infty}\mathbf{hW}^{k}_θ$, where $\m…
The study of triangulations on manifolds is closely related to understanding the three-dimensional homology cobordism group. We review here what is known about this group, with an emphasis on the local equivalence methods coming from Pin(2)- equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer spectra and involutive Heegaard Floer homology.
We define algebraic cobordism of classifying spaces, Ω^*(BG) and G-equivariant algebraic cobordism Ω^*_G(-) for a linear algebraic group G. We prove some properties of the coniveau filtration on algebraic cobordism, denoted F^j(Ω^*(-)), which are required for the definition to work. We show that G-equivariant cobordism satisfies the localization exact sequence. We calculate Ω^*(BG) for algebraic groups over the complex numbers corresponding to classical Lie groups GL(n), SL(n), Sp(n), O(n) and SO(2n+1). We also calculate Ω^*(BG) when G is a finite abelian group. A finite non-abelian group for …
We develop the rudiments of a theory of parametrized $\infty$-operads, including parametrized generalizations of monoidal envelopes, Day convolution, operadic left Kan extensions, results on limits and colimits of algebras, and the symmetric monoidal Yoneda embedding.
We use the cobordism category constructed in arXiv:1703.01047 to the study the homotopy type of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics on a spin manifold of dimension > 4. Our methods give an alternative proof and extension of a recent theorem of Botvinnik, Ebert, and Randal-Williams from arXiv:1411.7408.
We study the C_p-equivariant Tate construction on the topological Hochschild homology THH(B) of a symmetric ring spectrum B by relating it to a topological version R_+(B) of the Singer construction, extended by a natural circle action. This enables us to prove that the fixed and homotopy fixed point spectra of THH(B) are p-adically equivalent for B = MU and BP. This generalizes the classical C_p-equivariant Segal conjecture, which corresponds to the case B = S.
Let $(X,J) $ be an almost complex manifold with a (smooth) involution $σ:X\to X$ such that $Fix(σ)\neq \emptyset$. Assume that $σ$ is a complex conjugation, i.e, the differential of $σ$ anti-commutes with $J$. The space $P(m,X):=\mathbb{S}^m\times X/\!\sim$ where $(v,x)\sim (-v,σ(x))$ is known as a generalized Dold manifold. Suppose that a group $G\cong \mathbb Z_2^s$ acts smoothly on $X$ such that $g\circ σ=σ\circ g$ for all $g\in G$. Using the action of the diagonal subgroup $D=O(1)^{m+1}\subset O(m+1)$ on the sphere $\mathbb S^{m}$ for which there are only finitely many pairs of antipodal p…
Bökstedt and Madsen defined an infinite loop map from the embedded $d$-dimensional cobordism category of Galatius, Madsen, Tillmann and Weiss to the algebraic $K$-theory of $BO(d)$ in the sense of Waldhausen. The purpose of this paper is to establish two results in relation to this map. The first result is that it extends the universal parametrized $A$-theory Euler characteristic of smooth bundles with compact $d$-dimensional fibers, as defined by Dwyer, Weiss and Williams. The second result is that it actually factors through the canonical unit map $Q(BO(d)_+) \to A(BO(d))$.
This is an old talk about Boardman's work in Z/2-equivariant unoriented cobordism. It appeared long ago, but it discusses a useful geometric interpretation of Tate cohomology which doesn't seem to be widely known. I'm posting it in an attempt to advertise those ideas.

We give a new proof of an index theorem for fiber bundles of compact topological manifolds due to Dwyer, Weiss, and Williams, which asserts that the parametrized $A$-theory characteristic of such a fiber bundle factors canonically through the assembly map of $A$-theory. Furthermore our main result shows a refinement of this statement by providing such a factorization for an extended $A$-theory characteristic, defined on the parametrized topological cobordism category. The proof uses a convenient framework for bivariant theories and recent results of Gomez-Lopez and Kupers on the homotopy type …
This paper shows that the integral equivariant cohomology Chern numbers completely determine the equivariant geometric unitary bordism classes of closed unitary $G$-manifolds, which gives an affirmative answer to the conjecture posed by Guillemin--Ginzburg--Karshon in [20, Remark H.5, $\S3$, Appendix H], where $G$ is a torus. As a further application, we also obtain a satisfactory solution of [20, Question (A), $\S1.1$, Appendix H] on unitary Hamiltonian $G$-manifolds. Our key ingredients in the proof are the universal toric genus defined by Buchstaber--Panov--Ray and the Kronecker pairing of …
We consider compact homogeneous spaces G/H, where G is a compact connected Lie group and H is its closed connected subgroup of maximal rank. The aim of this paper is to provide an effective computation of the universal toric genus for the complex, almost complex and stable complex structures which are invariant under the canonical left action of the maximal torus T^k on G/H. As it is known, on G/H we may have many such structures and the computations of their toric genus in terms of fixed points for the same torus action give the constraints on possible collections of weights for the correspon…
We prove a twisting theorem for nodal classes in permutation-equivariant quantum $K$-theory, and combine it with existing theorems of Givental to obtain a twisting result for general characteristic classes of the virtual tangent bundle. Using this result, we develop complex cobordism-valued Gromov-Witten invariants defined via $K$-theory, and relate those invariants to $K$-theoretic ones via the quantization of suitable symplectic transformations. The resulting theory is a $K$-theoretic analogue of the quantum cobordism theory developed by Givental and Coates. Using the universality of cobordi…
We define Pin(2)-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology for rational homology 3-spheres equipped with a spin structure. The analogue of Froyshov's correction term in this setting is an integer-valued invariant of homology cobordism whose mod 2 reduction is the Rokhlin invariant. As an application, we show that there are no homology 3-spheres Y of Rokhlin invariant one such that Y # Y bounds an acyclic smooth 4-manifold. By previous work of Galewski-Stern and Matumoto, this implies the existence of non-triangulable high-dimensional manifolds.
We geometrically construct a homology theory that generalizes the Euler characteristic mod 2 to objects in the unoriented cobordism ring N_*(X) of a topological space X. This homology theory Eh_* has coefficients Z/2 in every nonnegative dimension. There exists a natural transformation N_*(X)->Eh_*(X) that for X=pt assigns to each smooth manifold its Euler characteristic mod 2. The homology theory is constructed using cobordism of stratifolds. For discrete groups G, we also define an equivariant version of the homology theory Eh_*, generalizing the equivariant Euler characteristic.
Let ${\frak M}_n$ be the set of equivariant unoriented cobordism classes of all $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifolds, where an $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifold $M$ is a smooth closed manifold of dimension $n$ with effective smooth action of a rank $n$ 2-torus group $({\Bbb Z}_2)^n$. Then ${\frak M}_n$ forms an abelian group with respect to disjoint union. This paper determines the group structure of ${\frak M}_n$ and shows that each class of ${\frak M}_n$ contains a small cover as its representative in the case $n=3$.
We give rigorous foundations for parametrized homotopy theory in this monograph. After preliminaries on point-set topology, base change functors, and proper actions of non-compact Lie groups, we develop the homotopy theory of equivariant ex-spaces (spaces over and under a given space) and of equivariant parametrized spectra. We emphasize several issues of independent interest and include much new material on the general theory of topologically enriched model categories. The essential point is to resolve problems in parametrized homotopy theory that have no nonparametrized counterparts. In cont…
We give a new construction of the equivariant $K$-theory of group actions (cf. Barwick et al.), producing an infinite loop $G$-space for each Waldhausen category with $G$-action, for a finite group $G$. On the category $R(X)$ of retractive spaces over a $G$-space $X$, this produces an equivariant lift of Waldhausen's functor $A(X)$, and we show that the $H$-fixed points are the bivariant $A$-theory of the fibration $X_{hH}\to BH$. We then use the framework of spectral Mackey functors to produce a second equivariant refinement $A_G(X)$ whose fixed points have tom Dieck type splittings. We expec…
The theory of indices of Morse--Bott vector fields on a manifold is constructed and the famous localization problem for the transfer map is solved on its base in the present paper. As a consequence, we obtained addition theorems for the universal Pontrjagin characteristic classes in cobordisms. These results gave us a possibility to complete the construction, which was begun more than twenty years ago, of the universal characteristic classes' theory.
By the classical result of Milnor and Novikov, the unitary cobordism ring is isomorphic to a graded polynomial ring with countably many generators: $Ω^U_*\simeq \mathbb Z[a_1,a_2,\dots]$, ${\rm deg}(a_i)=2i$. In this paper we solve a well-known problem of constructing geometric representatives for $a_i$ among smooth projective toric varieties, $a_n=[X^{n}], \dim_\mathbb C X^{n}=n$. Our proof uses a family of equivariant modifications (birational isomorphisms) $B_k(X)\to X$ of an arbitrary smooth complex manifold $X$ of (complex) dimension $n$ ($n\geq 2$, $k=0,\dots,n-2$). The key fact is that …
The circle-equivariant spectrum MString_C is the equivariant analogue of the cobordism spectrum MU<6> of stably almost complex manifolds with c_1=c_2=0. Given a rational elliptic curve C, the second author has defined a ring T-spectrum EC representing the associated T-equivariant elliptic cohomology. The core of the present paper is the construction, when C is a complex elliptic curve, of a map of ring T-spectra MString_C --> EC which is the rational equivariant analogue of the sigma orientation of Ando-Hopkins-Strickland. We support this by a theory of characteristic classes for calculation, …
This is the first part in a series of papers establishing an equivariant analogue of Steve Wilson's theory of even spaces, including the fact that the spaces in the loop spectrum for complex cobordism are even.
