We present the results from the search for Lyman Alpha emitters (LAEs) in the proximity of 11 CIV absorption systems at $z > 4.7$ in the spectrum of the QSO J1030+0524, using data from MUSE. We have found multiple LAE candidates close to four CIV systems at $z_{CIV} = 4.94$-5.74 with log$_{10}$(N CIV[cm$^{-2}$])$ > 13.5.$ At z = 5-6, CIV systems with W0(CIV) $> 0.2$ Å seem more likely to have galaxies with Ly$α$ emission within $ρ< 200$ proper kpc (4/5 cases), than the CIV systems with W0(CIV)$ < 0.2$ Å (0/6 cases). The impact parameter of LAE-CIV systems with equivalent widths W0(CIV)$ > 0.5 $ Å is in the range 11 $ < ρ<$ 200 proper kpc (pkpc). Furthermore, all candidates are in the luminosity range 0.18-1.15 L*$(Ly{ α}, z = 5.7)$ indicating that the environment of CIV systems within 200 pkpc is populated by the faint end of the Ly$α$ luminosity function. We report a 0.28 L*$(Lyα)$ galaxy at a separation of $ρ= 10$ pkpc from a strong CIV absorption (log10(NCIV[cm$^{-2}$]) = 14.52) at $z_{CIV} = 5.72419$. The prevalence of sub-L*(Ly$α$) galaxies in the proximity of z $> 4.9$ CIV systems suggest that the absorbing material is rather young, likely ejected in the recent past of the galaxies at these redshifts. The connection between faint LAEs and high-ionization absorption systems reported in this work, is potentially a consequence of the role of low mass galaxies in the early evolution of the circum-galactic and intergalactic media.
The VLT Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral-field spectrograph can detect Lyα emitters (LAE) in the redshift range $2.8 \lesssim z \lesssim 6.7$ in a homogeneous way. Ongoing MUSE surveys will notably probe faint Lyα sources that are usually missed by current narrow-band surveys. We provide quantitative predictions for a typical wedding-cake observing strategy with MUSE based on mock catalogs generated with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation coupled to numerical Lyα radiation transfer models in gas outflows. We expect $\approx$ 1500 bright LAEs ($F_{Lyα}$ $\gtrsim$ $10^{-1…
MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) -- V: Linking ionized gas traced by CIV and SiIV absorbers to Ly$α$ emitting galaxies at $z\approx 3.0-4.5$
We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) spectral properties of faint Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9<z<4.6 and provide material to prepare future observations of the faint Universe. We use data from the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey to construct mean rest-frame spectra of continuum-faint (median M$_{UV}$ of -18 and down to M$_{UV}$ of -16), low stellar mass (median value of $10^{8.4}$ and down to $10^{7}M_{\odot}$) LAEs at redshift z>3. We compute various averaged spectra of LAEs sub-sampled on the basis of their observational (e.g., Ly$α$ strength, UV magnitude and spectral sl…
We present the first characterization of the circumgalactic medium of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs), using a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ LAEs detected with the VLT/MUSE in fields centered on 8 bright background quasars. The LAEs have low Ly$α$ luminosities ($\sim 10^{42}\,\text{erg}\,\text{s}^{-1}$) and star formation rates (SFRs) $\sim 1~\text{M}_\odot\,\text{yr}^{-1}$, which for main sequence galaxies corresponds to stellar masses of only $\sim 10^{8.6}\,\text{M}_\odot$. The median transverse distance between the LAEs and the quasar sightlines is 165 proper kpc (pkpc). We stacked the high-resolution …
Metal absorption systems are products of star formation. They are believed to be associated with massive star forming galaxies, which have significantly enriched their surroundings. To test this idea with high column density CIV absorption systems at z~5.7, we study the projected distribution of galaxies and characterise the environment of CIV systems in two independent quasar lines-of-sight: J103027.01+052455.0 and J113717.73+354956.9. Using wide field photometry (~80x60h$^{-1}$ comoving Mpc), we select bright (Muv(1350Å)<-21.0 mag.) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~5.7 in a redshift slice Δz…
We present a study of the environment of 27 z=3-4.5 bright quasars from the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey. With medium-depth MUSE observations (4 hours on target per field), we characterise the effects of quasars on their surroundings by studying simultaneously the properties of extended gas nebulae and Lyalpha emitters (LAEs) in the quasar host haloes. We detect extended (up to ~ 100 kpc) Lyalpha emission around all MAGG quasars, finding a very weak redshift evolution between z=3 and z=6. By stacking the MUSE datacubes, we confidently detect extended emission of CIV and o…
We study the link between galaxies and HI-selected absorption systems at z~3-4 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey, an ESO large programme consisting of integral field pectroscopic observations of 28 quasar fields hosting 61 strong absorbers with $\rm N_{\rm HI}\gtrsim 10^{16.5}~\rm cm^{-2}$. We identify 127 Ly$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) around the absorbers, corresponding to a detection rate of 82$\pm$16 per cent. The luminosity function of these LAEs is approximately 5 times higher in normalization than the field population and we detect a significant clustering of gal…
Hydrogen Ly$α$ haloes (LAHs) are commonly used as a tracer of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at high redshifts. In this work, we aim to explore the existence of Ly$α$ haloes around individual UV-selected galaxies, rather than around Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs), at high redshifts. Our sample was continuum-selected with F775W<=27.5, and spectroscopic redshifts were assigned or constrained for all the sources thanks to the deepest (100- to 140-hour) existing Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data with adaptive optics. The final sample includes 21 galaxies that are pur…
In spite of their conjectured importance for the Epoch of Reionization, the properties of low-mass galaxies are currently still under large debate. In this article, we study the stellar and gaseous properties of faint, low-mass galaxies at z>3. We observed the Frontier Fields cluster Abell S1063 with MUSE over a 2 arcmin^2 field, and combined integral-field spectroscopy with gravitational lensing to perform a blind search for intrinsically faint Lya emitters (LAEs). We determined in total the redshift of 172 galaxies of which 14 are lensed LAEs at z=3-6.1. We increased the number of spectrosco…
Using the MEGAFLOW survey, which consists of a combination of MUSE and UVES observations of 22 quasar fields selected to contain strong MgII absorbers, we measure covering fractions of CIV and MgII as a function of impact parameter $b$ using a novel Bayesian logistic regression method on unbinned data, appropriate for small samples. We also analyse how the CIV and MgII covering fractions evolve with redshift. In the MUSE data, we found 215 $z=1-1.5$ [OII] emitters with fluxes $>10^{-17}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and within 250 kpc of quasar sight-lines. Over this redshift path $z=1-1.5$, we ha…
We present rest-frame Ly$α$ equivalent widths (EW) of 417 Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) detected with Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at $2.9 < z < 6.6$ in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Based on the deep MUSE spectroscopy and ancillary Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry data, we carefully measured EW values taking into account extended Ly$α$ emission and UV continuum slopes ($β$). Our LAEs reach unprecedented depths, both in Ly$α$ luminosities and UV absolute magnitudes, from log($L_{\rm Lyα}$/erg s$^{-1}$) $\sim$41.0 to 43.0 and from Muv $\sim$ -16 to -2…
We present improved results of the measurement of the correlation between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission at the end of reionisation. We have gathered a sample of $13$ spectroscopically confirmed Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) and $21$ Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) at angular separations $20'' \lesssim θ\lesssim 10'$ ($\sim 0.1-4$ pMpc at $z\sim 6$) from the sightlines to $8$ background $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars. We report for the first time the detection of an excess of Lyman-$α$ transmission spikes at $\sim 10-60$ cMpc from LAEs ($3.2σ$) and LBGs ($1.9σ$). We interpret the data …
CR7 is among the most luminous Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) known at $z = 6.6$ and consists of at least three UV components that are surrounded by Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emission. Previous studies have suggested that it may host an extreme ionising source. Here, we present deep integral field spectroscopy of CR7 with VLT/MUSE. We measure extended emission with a similar halo scale length as typical LAEs at $z\approx5$. CR7's Ly$α$ halo is clearly elongated along the direction connecting the multiple components, likely tracing the underlying gas distribution. The Ly$α$ emission originates almost exclus…

We present the median-stacked Lyman-$α$ surface brightness profile of 968 spectroscopically selected Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at redshifts $1.9<z<3.5$ in the early data of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). The selected LAEs are high-confidence Lyman-$α$ detections with large signal-to-noise ratios observed with good seeing conditions (point-spread-function full-width-at-half-maximum $<1.4"$), excluding active galactic nuclei (AGN). The Lyman-$α$ luminosities of the LAEs are $10^{42.4}-10^{43}\, \mathrm{erg}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$. We detect faint emission in the…
[Abbreviated] We investigate the dependence of Lyman-$α$ emitter (LAE) clustering on Lyman-$α$ luminosity. We use 1030 LAEs from the MUSE-Wide survey, 679 LAEs from MUSE-Deep, and 367 LAEs from the to-date deepest ever spectroscopic survey, the MUSE Extremely Deep Field. All objects have spectroscopic redshifts of $3<z<6$ and cover a large dynamic range of Ly$α$ luminosities: $40.15<\log (L_{\rm{Ly}α}/[\rm{erg \:s}^{-1}])<43.35$. We apply the Adelberger et al. K-estimator as the clustering statistic and fit the measurements with state-of-the-art halo occupation distribution (HOD) models. From …
Lyman$-α$ (Ly$α$) emission lines are typically found to be redshifted with respect to the systemic redshifts of galaxies, likely due to resonant scattering of Ly$α$ photons. Here we measure the average velocity offset for a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) with a median Ly$α$ flux (luminosity) of $\approx 10^{-17}~\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ ($\approx10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) and a median star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx1.3 \rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (not corrected for possible dust extinction), detected by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer as part of our MUSEQuBES circumgalact…

(Abridged) We investigate the Lyman $α$ emitter luminosity function (LAE LF) within the redshift range $2.9 \leq z \leq 6$ from the first instalment of the blind integral field spectroscopic survey MUSE-Wide. This initial part of the survey probes a region of 22.2 arcmin$^2$ in the CANDELS/GOODS-S field. The dataset provided us with 237 LAEs from which we construct the LAE LF in the luminosity range $42.2 \leq \log L_\mathrm{Lyα} [\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}]\leq 43.5$ within a volume of $2.3\times10^5$ Mpc$^3$. For the LF construction we utilise three different non-parametric estimators: The classic…
The flow of baryons to and from a galaxy, which is fundamental for galaxy formation and evolution, can be studied with galaxy-metal absorption system pairs. Our search for galaxies around CIV absorption systems at $z\sim5.7$ showed an excess of photometric Lyman-$α$ emitter (LAE) candidates in the fields J1030+0524 and J1137+3549. Here we present spectroscopic follow-up of 33 LAEs in both fields. In the first field, three out of the five LAEs within 10$h^{{-}1}$ projected comoving Mpc from the CIV system are within $\pm500$ km s$^{{-}1}$ from the absorption at $z_{\text{CIV}}=5.7242\pm0.0001$.…
We present a study of the galaxy environment of 9 strong HI+CIV absorption line systems ($16.2<{\rm log}(N({\rm HI}))<21.2$) spanning a wide range in metallicity at $z\sim4-5$, using MUSE integral field and X-Shooter spectroscopic data collected in a $z\approx 5.26$ quasar field. We identify galaxies within a 250 kpc and $\pm1000$ km s$^{-1}$ window for 6 out of the 9 absorption systems, with 2 of the absorption line systems showing multiple associated galaxies within the MUSE field of view. The space density of Ly$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) around the HI and CIV systems is $\approx10-20$ tim…
We present the second data release of the MUSE Hubble UDF surveys, which includes the deepest spectroscopic survey ever performed. The MUSE data, with their 3D content, amazing depth, wide spectral range, and excellent spatial and medium spectral resolution, are rich in information. This update of the first release incorporates a new 141-hour adaptive-optics-assisted MXDF field (1' diameter FoV) in addition to the reprocessed 10-hour mosaic (3'x3') and the single 31-hour deep field (1'x1'). We have securely identified and measured the redshift of 2221 sources, an increase of 41% compared to th…

We report the detection of diffuse Lyman-alpha halos (LAHs) around star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 5.7$ by stacking 310 spectroscopically confirmed Lyman-alpha (LAEs). The majority of the LAEs are identified from our spectroscopic survey of galaxies at $z>5.5$. They are all located in well-studied fields with deep narrowband and broadband imaging data. We combine the LAE sample and its subsamples in the narrowband NB816 (i.e., the Lyman-alpha band) and $z$ band (i.e., the continuum band). By comparing the stacked objects with their corresponding point spread functions, we clearly detect exten…
Deep narrow-band surveys have revealed a large population of faint Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters (LAEs) in the distant Universe, but relatively little is known about the most luminous sources ($L_{Lyα}>10^{42.7}$ erg/s; $L_{Lyα}>L^*_{Lyα}$). Here we present the spectroscopic follow-up of 21 luminous LAEs at z~2-3 found with panoramic narrow-band surveys over five independent extragalactic fields (~4x10$^6$ Mpc$^{3}$ surveyed at z~2.2 and z~3.1). We use WHT/ISIS, Keck/DEIMOS and VLT/X-SHOOTER to study these sources using high ionisation UV lines. Luminous LAEs at z~2-3 have blue UV slopes ($β=-2.0…
We present a study of the intersection between the populations of star forming galaxies (SFGs) selected as either Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9 - 6.7, within the same volume of universe sampled by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) behind the Hubble Frontier Fields lensing cluster A2744. We define three samples of star-forming galaxies: LBG galaxies with an LAE counterpart (92 galaxies), LBG galaxies without LAE counterpart (408 galaxies) and LAE galaxies without an LBG counterpart (46 galaxies). All these galaxies are intrinsica…
Cosmological simulations suggest that most of the matter in the Universe is distributed along filaments connecting galaxies. Illuminated by the cosmic UV background (UVB), these structures are expected to glow in fluorescent Lyman alpha emission with a Surface Brightness (SB) that is well below current observational limits for individual detections. Here, we perform a stacking analysis of the deepest MUSE/VLT data using three-dimensional regions (subcubes) with orientations determined by the position of neighbouring Lyman alpha galaxies (LAEs) at 3<z<4. Our method should increase the probabili…
We present the results obtained with VLT/MUSE on the faint-end of the Lyman-alpha luminosity function (LF) based on deep observations of four lensing clusters. The precise aim of the present study is to further constrain the abundance of Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) by taking advantage of the magnification provided by lensing clusters. We blindly selected a sample of 156 LAEs, with redshifts between $2.9 \le z \le 6.7$ and magnification-corrected luminosities in the range $ 39 \lesssim \log L_{Ly_α}$ [erg s$^{-1}$] $\lesssim 43$. The price to pay to benefit from magnification is a reduction of …
We present a VLT/MUSE survey of lensed high-redshift galaxies behind the z=0.77 cluster RCS0224-0002. We study the detailed internal properties of a highly magnified (μ~29) z=4.88 galaxy seen through the cluster. We detect wide-spread nebular CIVλλ1548,1551Å emission from this galaxy as well as a bright Lyα halo with a spatially-uniform wind and absorption profile across 12 kpc in the image plane. Blueshifted high- and low-ionisation interstellar absorption indicate the presence of a high-velocity outflow (Δv~300 km/s) from the galaxy. Unlike similar observations of galaxies at z=2-3, the Lyα …
We present MUSE/VLT imaging spectroscopy of rest-frame ultraviolet emission lines and ALMA observations of the [CI] $^3$P$_1$-$^3$P$_0$ emission line, probing both the ionized and diffuse molecular medium around the radio galaxy 4C 19.71 at z~3.6. This radio galaxy has extended Ly$α$ emission over a region ~100 kpc in size preferentially oriented along the axis of the radio jet. Faint Ly$α$ emission extends beyond the radio hot spots. We also find extended CIV and HeII emission over a region of ~150 kpc in size, where the most distant emission lies ~40 kpc beyond the north radio lobe and has n…
(abridged) Observing the signature of accretion from the intergalactic medium (IGM) onto galaxies at z~3 requires the detection of faint (L<<L*) galaxies embedded in a filamentary matrix of low-density, metal-poor gas coherent over hundreds of kpc. We study the gaseous environment of three Lyman$α$ emitters (LAEs) at z=2.7-2.8, found to be aligned in projection with a background QSO over ~250 kpc along the slit of a long-slit spectrum. The lack of detection of the LAEs in deep continuum images and the low inferred Ly$α$ luminosities show the LAEs to be intrinsically faint, low-mass galaxies (L…
We report the detection of extended Lyman-alpha (Lya) haloes around 145 individual star-forming galaxies at redshifts 3<z<6 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field observed with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at ESO-VLT. Our sample consists of continuum-faint (-15> M_{UV}> -22) Lya emitters (LAEs). Using a 2D, two-component decomposition of Lya emission assuming circular exponential distributions, we measure scale lengths and luminosities of Lya haloes. We find that 80% of our objects having reliable Lya halo measurements show Lya emission that is significantly more extended than the UV continuu…
Green Peas are nearby analogs of high-redshift Ly$α$-emitting galaxies. To probe their Ly$α$ escape, we study the spatial profiles of Ly$α$ and UV continuum emission of 24 Green Pea galaxies using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We extract the spatial profiles of Ly$α$ emission from their 2D COS spectra, and of UV continuum from both the 2D spectra and NUV images. The Ly$α$ emission shows more extended spatial profiles than the UV continuum in most Green Peas. The deconvolved Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of the Ly$α$ spatial profile is about 2 to 4 time…
Directly characterising the first generations of stars in distant galaxies is a key quest of observational cosmology. We present a case study of ID53 at z=4.77, the UV-brightest (but L*) star-forming galaxy at z>3 in the MUSE eXtremely Deep Field with a mass of $10^9$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition to very strong Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emission, we clearly detect the (stellar) continuum and an NV P-Cygni feature, interstellar absorption, fine-structure emission and nebular CIV emission lines in the 140 hr spectrum. Continuum emission from two spatially resolved components in Hubble Space Telescope data a…
We present results of the cross-correlation Ly$α$ intensity mapping with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) ultra-deep narrowband images and Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ in a total area of $4$ deg$^2$. Although overwhelming amount of data quality controls have been performed for the narrowband images, we further conduct extensive analysis evaluating systematics of large-scale point-spread-function wings, sky subtractions, and unknown errors based on physically uncorrelated signals and sources found in real HSC images and object catalogs, respectively. Removing the systematics, we car…
We present deep MUSE integral-field unit (IFU) spectroscopic observations of the giant (~150 x 80 kpc) Ly-alpha halo around the z=4.1 radio galaxy TNJ J1338-1942. This 9-hr observation maps the two-dimensional kinematics of the Ly-alpha emission across the halo. We identify two HI absorbers which are seen against the Ly-alpha emission, both of which cover the full 150 x 80 kpc extent of the halo and so have covering fractions ~1. The stronger and more blue-shifted absorber (dv~1200 km/s) has dynamics that mirror that of the underlying halo emission and we suggest that this high column material…
We use MUSE/VLT to conduct a survey of $z\sim3$ physical quasar pairs at close separation with a fast observation strategy. Our aim is twofold: (i) explore the Ly$α$ glow around the faint-end of the quasar population; (ii) take advantage of the combined illumination of a quasar pair to unveil large-scale intergalactic structures extending between the two quasars. Here, we report the results for a quasar pair ($z=3.020,3.008$; $i=21.84,22.15$), separated by 11.6 arcsec (or 89 projected kpc). MUSE reveals filamentary Ly$α$ structures extending between the two quasars with an average surface brig…
We present a study of metal-enriched halo gas traced by MgII and CIV absorption at z<2 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies survey and the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution survey. Using these large and complete galaxy surveys in quasar fields, we study the dependence of the metal distribution on galaxy properties and overdensities, out to physical projected separations of 750 kpc. We find that the cool, low-ionization gas is significantly affected by the environment across the full redshift range probed, with ~2-3 times more prevalent and stronger MgII absorption in higher overdens…
We discuss the rest-frame ultraviolet emission line spectra of a large (~100) sample of low luminosity redshift z~3.1 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) drawn from a Subaru imaging survey in the SSA22 survey field. Our earlier work based on smaller samples indicated that such sources have high [OIII]/[OII] line ratios possibly arising from a hard ionising spectrum that may be typical of similar sources in the reionisation era. With optical spectra secured from VLT/VIMOS, we re-examine the nature of the ionising radiation in a larger sample using the strength of the high ionisation diagnostic emission…
Recent wide-field integral field spectroscopy has revealed the detailed properties of high redshift Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae, most often targeted due to the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Here, we use VLT/MUSE to resolve the morphology and kinematics of a nebula initially identified due to strong Lya emission at $z\sim3.2$ (LABn06; Nilsson et al. 2006). Our observations reveal a two-lobed Lya nebula, at least $\sim$173 pkpc in diameter, with a light-weighted centroid near a mid-infrared source (within $\approx$17.2 pkpc) that appears to host an obscured AGN. The Lya emission ne…
In this paper we present Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field unit spectroscopic observations of the $\sim70\times30$ kpc$^2$ Ly$α$ halo around the radio galaxy 4C04.11 at $z = 4.5077$. High-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) are hosted by some of the most massive galaxies known at any redshift and are unique markers of concomitant powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and star formation episodes. We map the emission and kinematics of the Ly$α$ across the halo as well as the kinematics and column densities of eight HI absorbing systems at $-3500 < Δv < 0$ km s$^{-1}$.…

Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at $z\gtrsim4$ provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the Universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), VLT/MUSE, and ALMA, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass ($\approx 10^{7.6}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) galaxy at $z=3.98$ (also see Vanzella et al. 2022). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including CIV $λ\lambda1548,1550$, HeII $\lambda1640$, OIII] $λ\lambda1661,1666$, […
