We consider the geodesic X-ray transform acting on solenoidal tensor fields on a compact simply connected manifold with strictly convex boundary and non-positive curvature. We establish a stability estimate of the form $L^2\mapsto H^{1/2}_{T}$, where the $H^{1/2}_{T}$-space is defined using the natural parametrization of geodesics as initial boundary points and incoming directions (fan-beam geometry); only tangential derivatives at the boundary are used. The proof is based on the Pestov identity with boundary term localized in frequency.
We prove a sharp stability estimate for the problem of reconstructing a symmetric 2-tensor from its integrals along all maximal geodesics on a simple manifold.
In this article, we consider the inverse source problem arising in photoacoustic tomography in elastic media. We show that the time reversal method, proposed by Tittelfitz [Inverse Problems 28.5 (2012): 055004], converges with the sharp observation time without any constraint on the speeds of the longitudinal and shear waves.
We study the mathematical model of multiwave tomography including thermo and photoacoustic tomography with a variable speed for a fixed time interval $[0,T]$. We assume that the waves reflect from the boundary of the domain. We propose an averaged sharp time reversal algorithm. In case of measurements on the whole boundary, we give an explicit solution in terms of a Neumann series expansion. When the measurements are taken on a part of the boundary, we show that the same algorithm produces a parametrix.
Sharp estimates for mean curvature flow of graphs are shown and examples are given to illustrate why these are sharp. The estimates improves earlier (non-sharp) estimates of Klaus Ecker and Gerhard Huisken.
We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.
The main objective of the paper is to prove a geometric version of sharp trace and product estimates on null hypersurfaces with finite curvature flux. These estimates play a crucial role to control the geometry of such null hypersurfaces. The paper is based on an invariant version of the classical Littlewood -Paley theory, in a noncommutative setting, defined via heat flow on surfaces.
In this paper, we prove convergence of the high codimension mean curvature flow in the sphere to either a round point or a totally geodesic sphere assuming a pinching condition between the norm squared of the second fundamental form and the norm squared of the mean curvature and the background curvature of the sphere. We show that this pinching is sharp for dimension $n\geq 4$ but is not sharp for dimension $n=2,3$. For dimension $n=2$ and codimension $2$, we consider an alternative pinching condition which includes the normal curvature of the normal bundle. Finally, we sharpen the Chern-do Ca…
On simple geodesic disks of constant curvature, we derive new functional relations for the geodesic X-ray transform, involving a certain class of elliptic differential operators whose ellipticity degenerates normally at the boundary. We then use these relations to derive sharp mapping properties for the X-ray transform and its corresponding normal operator. Finally, we discuss the possibility of theoretically rigorous regularized inversions for the X-ray transform when defined on such manifolds.
Combining the sharp isoperimetric inequality established by Z. Balogh and A. Kristály [Math. Ann., in press, doi:10.1007/s00208-022-02380-1] with an anisotropic symmetrization argument, we establish sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities on $n$-dimensional Finsler manifolds having nonnegative $n$-Ricci curvature. A byproduct of this method is a Hardy-Sobolev-type inequality in the same geometric setting. As applications, by using variational arguments, we guarantee the existence/multiplicity of solutions for certain eigenvalue problems and elliptic PDEs involving the Finsler-Laplace operator. Our r…
In this paper, based on the local comparison principle in [12], we study the local behavior of the difference of two spacelike graphs in a neighborhood of a second contact point. Then we apply it to the constant mean curvature equation in 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{L}^3$ and get the uniqueness of critical point for the solution of such equation over convex domain, which is an analogue of the result in [28]. Last, by this uniqueness, we obtain a minimum principle for a functional depending on the solution and its gradient. This gives us a sharp gradient estimate for the solu…
By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp const…
It is well known that the Serrin condition is a necessary condition for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the prescribed mean curvature equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with certain regularity. In this paper we investigate the sharpness of the Serrin condition for the vertical mean curvature equation in the product $ M^n \times \mathbb{R} $. Precisely, given a $\mathscr{C}^2$ bounded domain $Ω$ in $M$ and a function $ H = H (x, z) $ continuous in $\overlineΩ\times\mathbb{R}$ and non-decreasing in the variable $z$, we prove that the strong Serrin condition $(n-1)\mathcal…
We show that a tensor field of any rank integrates to zero over all broken rays if and only if it is a symmetrized covariant derivative of a lower order tensor which satisfies a symmetry condition at the reflecting part of the boundary and vanishes on the rest. This is done in a geometry with non-positive sectional curvature and a strictly convex obstacle in any dimension. We give two proofs, both of which contain new features also in the absence of reflections. The result is new even for scalars in dimensions above two.
Patch solutions for the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation model sharp temperature fronts in atmospheric and oceanic flows. We establish local well-posedness for SQG sharp fronts of low Sobolev regularity, $H^{2+s}$ for arbitrarily small $s>0$, allowing for fronts with unbounded curvature.
Two sharp comparison results are derived for three-dimensional complete noncompact manifolds with scalar curvature bounded from below. The first one concerns the Green's function. When the scalar curvature is nonnegative, it states that the rate of decay of an energy quantity over the level set is strictly less than that of the Euclidean space, unless the manifold itself is isometric to the Euclidean space. The result is in turn converted into a sharp area comparison for the level set of the Green's function when in addition the Ricci curvature of the manifold is assumed to be asymptotically n…
We present a rigidity scenario for complete Riemannian manifolds supporting the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle with the sharp constant in $\mathbb R^n$ (shortly, sharp HPW principle). Our results deeply depend on the curvature of the Riemannian manifold which can be roughly formulated as follows: (a) When $(M,g)$ has non-positive sectional curvature, the sharp HPW principle holds on $(M,g)$. However, positive extremals exist in the sharp HPW principle if and only if $(M,g)$ is isometric to $\mathbb R^n$, $n={\rm dim}(M)$. (b) When $(M,g)$ has non-negative Ricci curvature, the shar…
In this paper we consider complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth, of dimension $n \geq 3$. We prove a sharp Willmore-type inequality for closed hypersurfaces $\partial Ω$ in $M$, with equality holding true if and only if $(M{\setminus}Ω, g)$ is isometric to a truncated cone over $\partialΩ$. An optimal version of Huisken's Isoperimetric Inequality for $3$-manifolds is obtained using this result. Finally, exploiting a natural extension of our techniques to the case of parabolic manifolds, we also deduce an enhanced version …
We prove some Liouville type theorems on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and strictly convex boundary. This gives a nonlinear generalization in low dimension of the recent sharp lower bound of the first Steklov eigenvalue by Xia-Xiong and verifies partially a conjecture by the third author. As a consequence, we derive several sharp Sobolev trace inequalities on these manifolds.
In this paper, we examine the boundary $L^2$ term of the sharp Sobolev trace inequality $\|u\|_{L^{q}(\pa M)}^2\leq S \|\nabla_g u\|_{L^2(M)}^2 +A(M,g)\|u\|^2_{L^2(\pa M)}$ on Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ with boundaries $\pa M$, where $q=\frac{2(n-1)}{n-2}$, $S$ is the best constant and $A(M,g)$ is some positive constant depending only on $M$ and $g$. We obtain a sharp trace inequality involving the mean curvature in a remainder term, which would fail in general once the mean curvature is replaced by any smaller function.
We study the singular limit of a spatially inhomogeneous and anisotropic reaction-diffusion equation. We use a Finsler metric related to the anisotropic diffusion term and work in relative geometry. We prove a weak comparison principle and perform an analysis of both the generation and the motion of interfaces. The limit problem involves motion by anisotropic mean curvature. We also prove an optimal estimate of the thickness of the transition layer.
We study stability of the sharp spectral gap bounds for metric-measure spaces satisfying a curvature bound. Our main result, new even in the smooth setting, is a sharp quantitative estimate showing that if the spectral gap of an RCD$(N-1, N)$ space is almost minimal, then the pushforward of the measure by an eigenfunction associated with the spectral gap is close to a Beta distribution. The proof combines estimates on the eigenfunction obtained via a new $L^1$-functional inequality for RCD spaces with Stein's method for distribution approximation. We also derive analogous, almost sharp, estima…
In the recent articles \cite{PSU1,PSU3}, a number of tensor tomography results were proved on two-dimensional manifolds. The purpose of this paper is to extend some of these methods to manifolds of any dimension. A central concept is the surjectivity of the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform, or equivalently the existence of certain distributions that are invariant under geodesic flow. We prove that on any Anosov manifold, one can find invariant distributions with controlled first Fourier coefficients. The proof is based on subelliptic type estimates and a Pestov identity. We present an alt…
For metric measure spaces verifying the reduced curvature-dimension condition $CD^*(K,N)$ we prove a series of sharp functional inequalities under the additional assumption of essentially non-branching. Examples of spaces entering this framework are (weighted) Riemannian manifolds satisfying lower Ricci curvature bounds and their measured Gromov Hausdorff limits, Alexandrov spaces satisfying lower curvature bounds and more generally $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces, Finsler manifolds endowed with a strongly convex norm and satisfying lower Ricci curvature bounds, etc. In particular we prove Brunn-Minkowski…
It was conjectured by Escobar [J. Funct. Anal. 165 (1999), 101--116] that for an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 3$) smooth compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, which has nonnegative Ricci curvature and boundary principal curvatures bounded below by $c>0$, the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue is greater than or equal to $c$ with equality holding only on isometrically Euclidean balls with radius $1/c$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture in the case of nonnegative sectional curvature. The proof is based on a combination of Qiu--Xia's weighted Reilly-type formula with a special choice of the…
We characterize the minimal time horizon over which any equity market with $d \geq 2$ stocks and sufficient intrinsic volatility admits relative arbitrage with respect to the market portfolio. If $d \in \{2,3\}$, the minimal time horizon can be computed explicitly, its value being zero if $d=2$ and $\sqrt{3}/(2π)$ if $d=3$. If $d \geq 4$, the minimal time horizon can be characterized via the arrival time function of a geometric flow of the unit simplex in $\mathbb R^d$ that we call the minimum curvature flow.
We are concerned with inverse boundary problems for first order perturbations of the Laplacian, which arise as model operators in the acoustic tomography of a moving fluid. We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet--to--Neumann map on the boundary of a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 3$, determines the first order perturbation of low regularity up to a natural gauge transformation, which sometimes is trivial. As an application, we recover the fluid parameters of low regularity from boundary measurements, sharpening the regularity assumptions in the recent results of [1] and [3]. In p…
In this paper, we prove that there are no solutions for the curvature equation \[ Δu+e^{u}=8πnδ_{0}\text{ on }E_τ, \quad n\in\mathbb{N}, \] where $E_τ$ is a flat rectangular torus and $δ_{0}$ is the Dirac measure at the lattice points. This confirms a conjecture in \cite{CLW2} and also improves a result of Eremenko and Gabrielov \cite{EG}. The nonexistence is a delicate problem because the equation always has solutions if $8πn$ in the RHS is replaced by $2πρ$ with $0<ρ\notin 4\mathbb{N}$. Geometrically, our result implies that a rectangular torus $E_τ$ admits a metric with curvature $+1$ acqui…
We construct several examples related to the scaling limits of energy minimizers and gradient flows of surface energy functionals in heterogeneous media. These include both sharp and diffuse interface models. The focus is on two separate but related issues, the regularity of effective surface tensions and the occurrence of zero mobility in the associated gradient flows. On regularity we build on the theory of Goldman, Chambolle and Novaga to show that gradient discontinuities in the surface tension are generic for sharp interface models. In the diffuse interface case we only show that the lami…
In this paper, we prove a scalar curvature rigidity result for geodesic balls in S^n. This result contrasts sharply with the recent counterexamples to Min-Oo's conjecture for the hemisphere (cf. [5]).
We consider a two-phase flow of two incompressible, viscous and immiscible fluids which are separated by a sharp interface in the case of a simple phase transition. In this model the interface is no longer material and its evolution is governed by a convective mean curvature flow equation, which is coupled to a two-phase Navier-Stokes equation with Young-Laplace law. The problem arises as a sharp interface limit of a diffuse interface model, which consists of a Navier-Stokes system coupled with an Allen-Cahn equation. We prove existence of strong solutions for sufficiently small times and regu…
