In this paper, we show that the expansions of functions from $L^p$-Paley-Wiener type spaces in terms of the prolate spheroidal wave functions converge almost everywhere for $1<p<\infty$, even in the cases when they might not converge in $L^p$-norm. We thereby consider the classical Paley-Wiener spaces $PW_c^p\subset L^p(\mathcal{R})$ of functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $[-c,c]$ and Paley-Wiener like spaces $B_{α,c}^p\subset L^p(0,\infty)$ of functions whose Hankel transform $\mathcal{H}^α$ is supported in $[0,c]$.As a side product, we show the continuity of the projection operator $P_c^αf:=\mathcal{H}^α(χ_{[0,c]}\cdot \mathcal{H}^αf)$ from $L^p(0,\infty)$ to $L^q(0,\infty)$, $1<p\leq q<\infty$.
The aim of this paper is to establish the range of p's for which the expansion of a function f $\in$ L p in a generalized prolate spheroidal wave function (PSWFs) basis converges to f in L p. Two generalizations of PSWFs are considered here, the circular PSWFs introduced by D. Slepian and the weighted PSWFs introduced by Wang and Zhang. Both cases cover the classical PSWFs for which the corresponding results has been previously established by Barcel{ó} and Cordoba. To establish those results, we prove a general result that allows to extend mean convergence in a given basis (e.g. Jacobi polynom…
Uniform asymptotic approximations are obtained for the prolate spheroidal wave functions, in the high-frequency case. The results are obtained by an application of certain existing asymptotic solutions of differential equations, and involve elementary, Bessel, and parabolic cylinder functions. An asymptotic relationship between the prolate spheroidal equation separation parameter and the other parameters is also obtained, and error bounds are available for all approximations
In this paper, we study the $L^p$-Bochner-Riesz mean summability problem related to the spectrum of some particular Sturm-Liouville operators in the weighted $L^p([a,b],ω).$ Our purpose is to establish suitable conditions under which the Bochner-Riesz expansion of a function $f \in L^p([a,b],ω)$,$1<p<\infty$, in two generalisations of Slepian's basis, converges to $f$ in $L^p([a,b],ω)$.
We give new formulas for finding a compactly supported function $v$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$, from its Fourier transform $\mathcal{F} v$ given within the ball $B_r$. For the one-dimensional case, these formulas are based on the theory of prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWFs). In multidimensions, well-known results of the Radon transform theory reduce the problem to the one-dimensional case. Related results on stability and convergence rates are also given.
One of the fundamental problems in communications is finding the energy distribution of signals in time and frequency domains. It should, therefore, be of great interest to find the most energy concentration hypercomplex signal. The present paper finds a new kind of hypercomplex signals whose energy concentration is maximal in both time and frequency under quaternionic Fourier transform. The new signals are a generalization of the prolate spheroidal wave functions (also known as Slepian functions) to quaternionic space, which are called quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions. The purpo…
In the present paper, we introduce the multidimensional Clifford prolate spheroidal wave functions (CPSWFs) defined on the unit ball as eigenfunctions of a Clifford differential operator and provide a Galerkin method for their computation as linear combinations of Clifford-Legendre polynomials. We show that these functions are eigenfunctions of the truncated Fourier transformation. Then we investigate the role of the CPSWFs in the spectral concentration problem associated with balls in the space and frequency domains, the behaviour of the eigenvalues of the time-frequency limiting operator and…
The Whittaker-Shannon-Kotel'nikov (WSK) sampling theorem provides a reconstruction formula for the bandlimited signals. In this paper, a novel kind of the WSK sampling theorem is established by using the theory of quaternion reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. This generalization is employed to obtain the novel sampling formulas for the bandlimited quaternion-valued signals. A special case of our result is to show that the 2D generalized prolate spheroidal wave signals obtained by Slepian can be used to achieve a sampling series of cube-bandlimited signals. The solutions of energy concentration…
The discrete prolate spheroidal sequences (DPSSs) are a set of orthonormal sequences in $\ell_2(\mathbb{Z})$ which are strictly bandlimited to a frequency band $[-W,W]$ and maximally concentrated in a time interval $\{0,\ldots,N-1\}$. The timelimited DPSSs (sometimes referred to as the Slepian basis) are an orthonormal set of vectors in $\mathbb{C}^N$ whose discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) is maximally concentrated in a frequency band $[-W,W]$. Due to these properties, DPSSs have a wide variety of signal processing applications. The DPSSs are the eigensequences of a timelimit-then-bandli…
For fixed $c,$ Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWFs), denoted by $ψ_{n, c},$ form an orthogonal basis with remarkable properties for the space of band-limited functions with bandwith $c$. They have been largely studied and used after the seminal work of D. Slepian and his co-authors. In several applications, uniform estimates of the $ψ_{n,c}$ in $n$ and $c,$ are needed. To progress in this direction, we push forward the uniform approximation error bounds and give an explicit approximation of their values at $1$ in terms of the Legendre complete elliptic integral of the first kind. Also, we…
We implement numerically formulas of [Isaev, Novikov, arXiv:2107.07882] for finding a compactly supported function $v$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$, from its Fourier transform $\mathcal{F} [v]$ given within the ball $B_r$. For the one-dimensional case, these formulas are based on the theory of prolate spheroidal wave functions, which arise, in particular, in the singular value decomposition of the aforementioned band-limited Fourier transform for $d = 1$. In multidimensions, these formulas also include inversion of the Radon transform. In particular, we give numerical examples of super-resolut…
Landau, Pollak, Slepian, and Tracy, Widom discovered that certain integral operators with so called Bessel and Airy kernels possess commuting differential operators and found important applications of this phenomena in time-band limiting and random matrix theory. In this paper we announce that very large classes of integral operators derived from bispectral algebras of rank 1 and 2 (parametrized by lagrangian grassmannians of infinitely large size) have this property. The above examples come from special points in these grassmannians.
Recently, there is a growing interest in the spectral approximation by the Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWFs) $ψ_{n, c},\, c>0.$ This is due to the promising new contributions of these functions in various classical as well as emerging applications from Signal Processing, Geophysics, Numerical Analysis, etc. The PSWFs form a basis with remarkable properties not only for the space of band-limited functions with bandwidth $c,$ but also for the Sobolev space $H^s([-1,1])$. The quality of the spectral approximation and the choice of the parameter $c$ when approximating a function in $H^s([-…
We construct bases of polynomials for the spaces of square-integrable harmonic functions which are orthogonal to the monogenic and antimonogenic $\mathbb{R}^3$-valued functions defined in a prolate or oblate spheroid.
In this paper we describe a remarkable new property of the self-adjoint extension W of the prolate spheroidal operator introduced in \cite{college98},\cite{CMbook}. The restriction of this operator to the interval J whose characteristic function commutes with it is well known, has discrete positive spectrum and is well understood. What we have discovered is that the restriction of W to the complement of J admits (besides a replica of the above positive spectrum) negative eigenvalues whose ultraviolet behavior reproduce that of the squares of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Furthermore, the…
In this work, we first give various explicit and local estimates of the eigenfunctions of a perturbed Jacobi differential operator. These eigenfunctions generalize the famous classical prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWFs), founded in 1960's by D. Slepian and his co-authors and corresponding to the case $α=β=0.$ They also generalize the new PSWFs introduced and studied recently in \cite{Wang2}, denoted by GPSWFs and corresponding to the case $α=β> -1.$ The main content of this work is devoted to the previous interesting special case $α=β.$ In particular, we give further computational impro…
For fixed $W\in \big(0,\frac{1}{2}\big)$ and positive integer $N\geq 1,$ the discrete prolate spheroidal wave functions (DPSWFs), denoted by $U_{k,W}^N,$ $0\leq k\leq N-1$ form the set of the eigenfunctions of the positive and finite rank integral operator $\widetilde Q_{N,W},$ defined on $L^2(-1/2,1/2),$ with kernel $K_N(x,y)=\frac{\sin(Nπ(x-y))}{\sin(π(x-y))}\, \mathbf 1_{[-W,W]}(y).$ It is well known that the DPSWF's have a wide range of classical as well as recent signal processing applications. These applications rely heavily on the properties of the DPSWFs as well as the behaviour of the…
Commuting integral and differential operators connect the topics of Signal Processing, Random Matrix Theory, and Integrable Systems. Previously, the construction of such pairs was based on direct calculation and concerned concrete special cases, leaving behind important families such as the operators associated to the rational solutions of the KdV equation. We prove a general theorem that the integral operator associated to every wave function in the infinite dimensional Adelic Grassmannian Gr ad of Wilson always reflects a differential operator (in the sense of Definition 1 below). This intri…
Beginning with the work of Landau, Pollak and Slepian in the 1960s on time-band limiting, commuting pairs of integral and differential operators have played a key role in signal processing, random matrix theory and integrable systems. Previously, such pairs were constructed by ad hoc methods, which worked because a commuting operator of low order could be found by a direct calculation. We describe a general approach to these problems that proves that every point $W$ of Wilson's infinite dimensional adelic Grassmannian $\mathrm Gr^ad$ gives rise to an integral operator $T_W$, acting on $L^2(Γ)$…
An algorithm for computing eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the angular spheroidal wave equation, based on a known but scarcely used method, is developed. By requiring the regularity of the wave function, represented by its series expansion, the eigenvalues appear as the zeros of a one variable function easily computable. The iterative extended Newton method is suggested as especially suitable for determining those zeros. The computation of the eigenfunctions is then immediate. The usefulness of the method, applicable also in the case of complex values of the "prolateness" parameter, is illus…
