Algebraically fibering group is an algebraic generalization of the fibered 3-manifold group in higher dimensions. Let $M(\mathcal{P})$ and $M(\mathcal{E})$ be the cusped and compact hyperbolic real moment-angled manifolds associated to the hyperbolic right-angled 24-cell $\mathcal{P}$ and the hyperbolic right-angled 120-cell $\mathcal{E}$, respectively. Jankiewicz-Norin-Wise showed in [13] that $π_1(M(\mathcal{P}))$ and $π_1(M(\mathcal{E}))$ are algebraic fibered. Namely, there are two exact sequences $$1\rightarrow H_{\mathcal{P}}\rightarrow π_1(M(\mathcal{P}))\xrightarrow{ϕ_{\mathcal{P}}} \mathbb{Z}\rightarrow 1,$$ $$1\rightarrow H_{\mathcal{E}}\rightarrow π_1(M(\mathcal{E}))\xrightarrow{ϕ_{\mathcal{E}}} \mathbb{Z}\rightarrow 1,$$ where $H_{\mathcal{P}}$ and $H_{\mathcal{E}}$ are finitely generated. In this paper, we furtherly show that the groups $H_{\mathcal{P}}$ and $H_{\mathcal{E}}$ are not $FP_2$. In particular, those fiber-kernel groups are finitely generated, but not finitely presented.
By a work of Thurston, it is known that if a hyperbolic fibred $3$-manifold $M$ has Betti number greater than 1, then $M$ admits infinitely many distinct fibrations. For any fibration $ω$ on a hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$, the number of fibrations on $M$ that are commensurable in the sense of Calegari-Sun-Wang to $ω$ is known to be finite. In this paper, we prove that the number can be arbitrarily large.
This article provides sufficient conditions for a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with non zero first Betti number to fiber over the circle, and to find a fiber in $M$. Those conditions are formulated in terms of the behavior the circular characteristic in finite regular covers of $M$. We define the circular characteristic as an invariant associated to a non trivial cohomology class $α$ of $M$, using a Heegaard characteristic.
We discuss fibered commensurability of fibrations on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, a notion introduced by Calegari, Sun and Wang. We construct manifolds with non-symmetric but commensurable fibrations on the same fibered face. We also prove that if a given manifold M does not have any hidden symmetries, then M does not admit non-symmetric but commensu- rable fibrations. Finally, Theorem 3.1 of Calegari, Sun and Wang shows that every hyperbolic fibered commensurability class contains a unique minimal element. In this paper we provide a detailed discussion on the proof of the theorem in the cusped ca…
We answer a question posed by Fielder in [1] concerning two notions of crossing number for algebraic knots $K$ under Hopf fibration, one topological, denoted $h(K)$, the other coming from the realization of such knots around complex singularities, denoted $C_{alg}(K)$. We show that $C_{alg}(K)-h(K)$ can be arbitrarily large. We also give an upper bound for $h$ of some families of knots such as torus knots $T(2,n)$, twist knots and their mirror images.
A class of complex hyperbolic lattices in PU(2,1) called the Deligne-Mostow lattices has been reinterpreted by Hirzebruch and others in terms of line arrangements. They use branched covers over a suitable blow up of the complete quadrilateral arrangement of lines in projective 2-space to construct the complex hyperbolic surfaces over the orbifolds associated to the lattices. Fundamental domains for these lattices have been built by Pasquinelli. Here we show how the fundamental domains can be interpreted in terms of line arrangements as above. This parallel is then applied in two contexts. Dash…
We investigate the maximal solid tubes around short simple geodesics in hyperbolic three-manifolds and how complex length of curves relate to closed, incompressible, least area minimal surfaces. As applications, we prove, there are some closed hyperbolic three-manifolds fibering over the circle which are not foliated by closed incompressible minimal surfaces diffeomorphic to the fiber. We also show, the existence of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds containing arbitrarily many embedded closed incompressible minimal surfaces. Our strategy is to prove main theorems under natural geometric conditions on t…
For a hyperbolic fibered 3-manifold M, we prove results that uniformly relate the structure of surface projections as one varies the fibrations of M. This extends our previous work from the fully-punctured to the general case.
For every fibration $f : X \to B$ with $X$ a compact Kähler manifold, $B$ a smooth projective curve, and a general fiber of $f$ an abelian variety, we prove that $f$ has an algebraic approximation.
Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic…
Let M denote the total space of a Lefschetz fibration, obtained by blowing up a Lefschetz pencil on an algebraic surface. We consider the n-fold fibre sum M(n), generalizing the construction of the elliptic surfaces E(n). For a Lefschetz pencil on a simply-connected minimal surface of general type we partially calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the fibre sum M(n) using a formula of Morgan-Szabo-Taubes. As an application we derive an obstruction for self-diffeomorphisms of the boundary of the tubular neighbourhood of a general fibre in M(n) to extend over the complement of the neighbour…
A question of Griffiths-Schmid asks when the monodromy group of an algebraic family of complex varieties is arithmetic. We resolve this in the affirmative for the class of algebraic surfaces known as Atiyah-Kodaira manifolds, which have base and fibers equal to complete algebraic curves. Our methods are topological in nature and involve an analysis of the "geometric" monodromy, valued in the mapping class group of the fiber.
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group that can be written as an extension \[ 1 \longrightarrow K \stackrel{i}{\longrightarrow} G \stackrel{f}{\longrightarrow} Γ\longrightarrow 1 \] where $K$ is a finitely generated group. By a study of the BNS invariants we prove that if $b_1(G) > b_1(Γ) > 0$, then $G$ algebraically fibers, i.e. admits an epimorphism to $\Bbb{Z}$ with finitely generated kernel. An interesting case of this occurrence is when $G$ is the fundamental group of a surface bundle over a surface $F \hookrightarrow X \rightarrow B$ with Albanese dimension $a(X) = 2$. As an application, …
Let O be a three-dimensional Nil-orbifold, with branching locus a knot Sigma transverse to the Seifert fibration. We prove that O is the limit of hyperbolic cone manifolds with cone angle in (pi-epsilon, pi). We also study the space of Dehn filling parameters of O-Sigma. Surprisingly it is not diffeomorphic to the deformation space constructed from the variety of representations of O-Sigma. As a corollary of this, we find examples of spherical cone manifolds with singular set a knot that are not locally rigid. Those examples have large cone angles.
We study the magic manifold $N$ which is a hyperbolic and fibered $3$-manifold. We give an explicit construction of a fiber $F_a$ and its monodromy $:F_a \rightarrow F_a$ of the fibration associated to each fibered class $a$ of $N$. Let $δ_g$ (resp. $δ_g^+$) be the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosovs (resp. pseudo-Anosovs with orientable invariant foliations) defined on an orientable closed surface of genus $g$. As a consequence of our result, we obtain the first explicit construction of the following pseudo-Anosovs; a minimizer of $δ_7^+$ and conjectural minimizers of $δ_g$ for large $g$.
We prove, under the assumption of the virtual fibration conjecture for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, that all arithmetic lattices in O(n,1), n> 4, and different from 7, are non-coherent. We also establish noncoherence of uniform arithmetic lattices of the simplest type in SU(n,1), n> 1, and of uniform lattices in SU(2,1) which have infinite abelianization.
We extend the Siu--Beauville theorem to a certain class of compact Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, proving that they fiber holomorphically over hyperbolic Riemannian surfaces whenever they satisfy the necessary topological hypotheses. As applications we obtain restrictions on the fundamental groups of such Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, and show that in certain cases they are in fact Kaehler.
A symplectic form is called hyperbolic if its pull-back to the universal cover is a differential of a bounded one-form. The present paper is concerned with the properties and constructions of manifolds admitting hyperbolic symplectic forms. The main results are: * If a symplectic form represents a bounded cohomology class then it is hyperbolic. * The symplectic hyperbolicity is equivalent to a certain isoperimetric inequality. * The fundamental group of symplectically hyperbolic manifold is non-amenable. We also construct hyperbolic symplectic forms on certain bundles and Lefschetz fibrations,…
Let $G$ be a word hyperbolic group. We prove that the algebraic $K$-theory groups of $\dbZ [G]$, $K_n(\dbZ[G])$, have finite rank for all $n\in \dbZ$. For a few classes of groups, we give explicit formulas for the ranks of the algebraic $K$-theory groups of their group rings.
In this paper we study the difference between algebraic and geometric solutions of the hyperbolic Dehn filling equations for ideally triangulated 3-manifolds. We show that any geometric solution is an algebraic one, and we prove the uniqueness of the geometric solutions. Then we do explicit calculations for three interesting examples. With the first two examples we see that not all algebraic solutions are geometric and that the algebraic solutions are not unique. The third example is a non-hyperbolic manifold that admits a positive, partially flat solution of the compatibility and completeness…
A hyperbolic 3-simplex reflection group is a Coxeter group arising as a lattice in the isometry group of hyperbolic 3-space, with fundamental domain a geodesic simplex (possibly with some ideal vertices). The classification of these groups is known, and there are exactly 9 cocompact examples, and 23 non-cocompact examples. We provide a complete computation of the lower algebraic K-theory of the integral group ring of all the hyperbolic 3-simplex reflection groups.
Using the representation of the isometries as 2x2 invertible matrices over the division algebra $\H$ of quaternions, we give an algebraic characterization of the dynamical types of the orientation-preserving isometries of the hyperbolic 5-space. We also determine the conjugacy classes and the conjugacy classes of centralizers or the z-classes in $GL(2, \H)$.
Let $S_g$ ($g\geq 2$) be a closed surface of genus $g$. Let $K$ be any real number field and $A$ be any quaternion algebra over $K$ such that $A\otimes_K\mathbb{R}\cong M_2(\mathbb{R})$. We show that there exists a hyperbolic structure on $S_g$ such that $K$ and $A$ arise as its invariant trace field and invariant quaternion algebra.
Using methods inspired from algebraic $K$-theory, we give a new proof of the Genauer fibration sequence, relating the cobordism categories of closed manifolds with cobordism categories of manifolds with boundaries, and of the Bökstedt-Madsen delooping of the cobordism category. Unlike the existing proofs, this approach generalizes to other cobordism-like categories of interest. Indeed we argue that the Genauer fibration sequence is an analogue, in the setting of cobordism categories, of Waldhausen's Additivity theorem in algebraic $K$-theory.
