We investigate the $2k_F$ density-wave instability of non-Fermi liquid states by combining exact diagonalization with renormalization group analysis. At the half-filled zeroth Landau level, we study the fate of the composite Fermi liquid in the presence of the mass anisotropy and mixed Landau level form factors. These two experimentally accessible knobs trigger a phase transition towards a unidirectional charge-density-wave state with a wavevector equal to $2k_F$ of the composite Fermi liquid. Based on exact diagonalization, we identify such a transition by examining both the energy spectra and the static structure factor of charge density-density correlations. Moreover, the renormalization group analysis reveals that gauge fluctuations render the non-Fermi liquid state unstable against density-wave orders, consistent with numerical observations. Possible experimental probes of the density-wave instability are also discussed.
Nematicity in quantum Hall systems has been experimentally well established at excited Landau levels. The mechanism of the symmetry breaking, however, is still unknown. Pomeranchuk instability of Fermi liquid parameter $F_{\ell} \le -1$ in the angular momentum $\ell=2$ channel has been argued to be the relevant mechanism, yet there are no definitive theoretical proofs. Here we calculate, using the variational Monte Carlo technique, Fermi liquid parameters $F_\ell$ of the composite fermion Fermi liquid with a finite layer width. We consider $F_{\ell}$ in different Landau levels $n=0,1,2$ as a f…
While an ordinary Fermi sea is perturbatively robust to interactions, the paradigmatic composite-fermion (CF) Fermi sea arises as a non-perturbative consequence of emergent gauge fields in a system where there was no Fermi sea to begin with. A mean-field picture suggests two Fermi seas, of composite fermions made from electrons or holes in the lowest Landau level, which occupy different areas away from half filling and thus appear to represent distinct states. We show that in the microscopic theory of composite fermions, which satisfies particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level to an e…
Composite fermions have played a seminal role in understanding the quantum Hall effect, particularly the formation of a compressible `composite Fermi liquid' (CFL) at filling factor nu = 1/2. Here we suggest that in multi-layer systems interlayer Coulomb repulsion can similarly generate `metallic' behavior of composite fermions between layers, even if the electrons remain insulating. Specifically, we propose that a quantum Hall bilayer with nu = 1/2 per layer at intermediate layer separation may host such an interlayer coherent CFL, driven by exciton condensation of composite fermions. This ph…
A recent experimental study [Pan et al., arXiv: 1902.10262] has shown that fractional quantum Hall effect gaps are essentially consistent with particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level. Motivated by this result, we consider a clean two dimensional electron system (2DES) from the viewpoint of composite fermion mean-field theory. In this short note, we show that while the experiment is manifestly consistent with a Dirac composite fermion theory proposed recently by Son, it can equally well be explained within the framework of non-relativistic composite fermions, first put forward by Halp…
We study two-component electrons in the lowest Landau level at total filling factor $ν_T=1/2$ with anisotropic mass tensors and principal axes rotated by $π/2$ as realized in Aluminum Arsenide (AlAs) quantum wells. Combining exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group we demonstrate that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a gapless state in which both flavors are equally populated to another gapless state in which all the electrons spontaneously polarize into a single flavor beyond a critical mass anisotropy of {\bf $m_x/m_y \sim 7$}. We propose that th…
Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states is generalized to compressible states. It is shown that anisotropy in the composite fermion Fermi surface is a direct reflection of this intrinsic geometry. A simple model is introduced in which the geometric parameter can be obtained exactly from other parameters including electron mass anisotropy. Our results compare favorably with recent measurements of anisotropy in composite fermion Fermi surface [D. Kamburov, Y. Liu, M. Shayegan, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West, and K. W. Baldwin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 206801 (2013)]. Broader…
We theoretically investigate the nature of the state at quarter filled lowest Landau level and predict that, as the quantum well width is increased, a transition occurs from the composite fermion Fermi sea into a novel non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state that is topologically equivalent to $f$-wave pairing of composite fermions. This state is topologically distinct from the familiar $p$-wave paired Pfaffian state. We compare our calculated phase diagram with experiments and make predictions for many observable quantities.
We study the two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field at filling fraction $ν=\frac{1}{2}$. At this filling the system is in a gapless state which can be interpreted as a Fermi liquid of composite fermions. We construct trial wave functions for the system on a torus, based on this idea, and numerically compare these to exact wave functions for small systems found by exact diagonalization. We find that the trial wave functions give an excellent description of the ground state of the system, as well as its charged excitations, in all momentum sectors. We analyze the dispersion of the comp…
We report on exact-diagonalization studies of correlated many-electron states in the half-filled Landau levels of graphene, including pseudospin (valley) degeneracy. We demonstrate that the polarized Fermi sea of non-interacting composite fermions remains stable against a pairing transition in the lowest two Landau levels. However, it undergoes spontaneous depolarization, which is unprotected owing to the lack of single-particle pseudospin splitting. These results suggest the absence of the Pfaffian phase in graphene.
The particle-hole (PH) symmetry at half-filled Landau level requires the relationship between the flux number N_phi and the particle number N on a sphere to be exactly N_phi - 2(N-1) = 1. The wave functions of composite fermions with 1/2 "orbital spin", which contributes to the shift "1" in the N_phi and N relationship, are proposed, shown to be PH symmetric, and validated with exact finite system results. It is shown the many-body composite electron and composite hole wave functions at half-filling can be formed from the two components of the same spinor wave function of a massless Dirac ferm…
We argue that the naively expected singularities of the Fermi surface, in the mixed composite boson - composite fermion states proposed [S.H. Simon et al., PRL 91, 046803(2003)] for the evolution of ν= 1 bilayer quantum Hall system with distance, are obliterated. Our conclusion is based on a careful analysis of the momentum distribution in ν= 1/2 single-layer composite-fermion state. We point out to a possibility of the phenomenon hitherto unknown outside Kondo lattice systems when, in a translationally invariant system, Fermi-liquid-like portion of electrons enlarges its volume.
There is increasing experimental evidence for fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=2+3/8$. Modeling it as a system of composite fermions, we study the problem of interacting composite fermions by a number of methods. In our variational study, we consider the Fermi sea, the Pfaffian paired state, and bubble and stripe phases of composite fermions, and find that the Fermi sea state is favored for a wide range of transverse thickness. However, when we incorporate interactions between composite fermions through composite-fermion diagonalization on systems with up to 25 composite fer…
The physics of the state at even denominator fractional fillings of Landau levels depends on the Coulomb pseudopotentials, and produces, in different GaAs Landau levels, a composite fermion Fermi sea, a stripe phase, or, possibly, a paired composite fermion state. We consider here even denominator fractions in graphene, which has different pseudopotentials as well as a possible four fold degeneracy of each Landau level. We test various composite fermion Fermi sea wave functions (fully polarized, SU(2) singlet, SU(4) singlet) as well as the paired composite fermion states in the n=0 and $n=1$ L…
We consider a model of Fermi-Bose mixture with strong hard-core repulsion between particles of the same sort and attraction between particles of different sorts. In this case, besides the standard anomalous averages of the type $<b>$; $<bb>$ and $<cc>$, a pairing between fermion and boson of the type $bc$ is possible. This pairing corresponds to a creation of composite fermions in the system. At low temperatures and equal densities of fermions and bosons composite fermions are further paired in quartets. Our investigations are important for high-$T_c$ superconductors and in connection with rec…
In two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide AlAs quantum wells, composite fermions around the filling factor $ν$ = 3/2 are fully spin polarized but possess a valley degree of freedom. Here we measure the energy needed to completely valley polarize these composite fermions as a function of electron density. Comparing our results to the existing theory, we find overall good quantitative agreement, but there is an unexpected trend: The measured composite fermion valley polarization energy, normalized to the Coulomb energy, decreases with decreasing density.
In several two-dimensional films that exhibit a magnetic field-tuned superconductor to insulator transition (SIT), stable metallic phases have been observed. Building on the `dirty boson' description of the SIT, we suggest that the metallic region is analogous to the composite Fermi liquid observed about half-filled Landau levels of the two-dimensional electron gas. The composite fermions here are mobile vortices attached to one flux quantum of an emergent gauge field. The composite vortex liquid is a 2D non-Fermi liquid metal, which we argue is stable to weak quenched disorder. We describe se…
We propose that a composite fermion operator $f_{iσ}(2n_{i{\bar σ}}-1)$ could have coherent excitations, where $f_{iσ}$ is the fermion operator for interacting electrons and $n_{i{\bar σ}}$ is the number operator of the opposite spin. In the two-impurity Anderson model, it is found that the excitation of this composite fermion has a pseudogap in the Kondo regime, and has a finite spectral weight in the regime where the excitation of the regular fermion $f_{iσ}$ has a pseudogap. In the latter regime, the self-energy of $f_{iσ}$ is found to be singular near Fermi energy. We argue that this compo…
For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi su…
We derive the definition of the Berry phase for the adiabatic transport of a composite fermion (CF) in a half-filled composite Fermi-liquid (CFL). It is found to be different from that adopted in previous investigations by Geraedts et al. For the standard CFL wave function, we analytically show that the Berry curvature is uniformly distributed in the momentum space. For the Jain-Kamilla wave function, we numerically show that its Berry curvature has a continuous distribution inside the Fermi sea and vanishes outside. We conclude that the CF with respect to both the microscopic wave-functions i…
We propose that an extension of the exciton concept to doped Mott insulators offers a fruitful insight into challenging issues of the copper oxide superconductors. In our extension, new fermionic excitations called cofermions emerge in conjunction to generalized excitons. The cofermions hybridize with conventional quasiparticles. Then a hybridization gap opens, and is identified as the pseudogap observed in the underdoped cuprates. The resultant Fermi-surface reconstruction naturally explains a number of unusual properties of the underdoped cuprates, such as the Fermi arc and/or pocket formati…
The response of composite Fermions to large wavevector scattering has been studied through phonon drag measurements. While the response retains qualitative features of the electron system at zero magnetic field, notable discrepancies develop as the system is varied from a half-filled Landau level by changing density or field. These deviations, which appear to be inconsistent with the current picture of composite Fermions, are absent if half-filling is maintained while changing density. There remains, however, a clear deviation from the temperature dependence anticipated for 2k_F scattering.
Topological pairing of composite fermions has led to remarkable ideas, such as excitations obeying non-Abelian braid statistics and topological quantum computation. We construct a $p$-wave paired Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) wave function for composite fermions in the torus geometry, which is a convenient geometry for formulating momentum space pairing as well as for revealing the underlying composite-fermion Fermi sea. Following the standard BCS approach, we minimize the Coulomb interaction energy at half filling in the lowest and the second Landau levels, which correspond to filling facto…
It is argued that the recently observed Fermi liquids in strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gases are adiabatically connected to a projected Fermi gas. This conclusion is reached by constructing a set of Jastrow wavefunctions, following Tan's observations on the structure of the physical Hilbert space [Annals of Physics 323, 2952 (2008)]. The Jastrow projection merely implements the Bethe-Peierls condition on the BCS and Fermi gas wavefunctions. This procedure provides a simple picture of the emergence of Fermi polarons as composite fermions in the normal state of the highly polarized gas. I…
Motivated by the issue of particle-hole symmetry for the composite fermion Fermi sea at the half filled Landau level, Dam T. Son has made an intriguing proposal [Phys. Rev. X {\bf 5}, 031027 (2015)] that composite fermions are Dirac particles. We ask what features of the Dirac-composite fermion theory and its various consequences may be reconciled with the well established microscopic theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect and the 1/2 state, which is based on {\em non-relativistic} composite fermions. Starting from the microscopic theory, we derive the assertion of Son that the particle-…
We discuss the emergence of an orthogonality catastrophe in the response of a composite fermion liquid as the filling factor νapproaches 1/2m, where m=1,2,3.... A tunneling experiment is proposed in which dramatic changes in the I-V characteristic should be observable as νis varied. Explicit I-V characteristics calculated within the so-called Modified Random Phase Approximation, are provided for ν=1/3 -> ν=1/2.
Composite fermions provide a simple and unified picture to understand a vast amount of phenomenology in the quantum Hall regime. However it has remained challenging to formulate this concept properly within a single Landau level. Recently a low-energy noncommutative field theory for bosons at Landau-level filling factor $ν=1$ has been formulated by Dong and Senthil. In the limit of long-wavelength and small-amplitude gauge fluctuation, they found it reduces to the celebrated Halperin-Lee-Read theory of composite fermion liquid. In this work we consider a Bose-Fermi mixture at total filling fac…
We study the effect of band anisotropy with discrete rotational symmetry $C_N$ (where $N\ge 2$) in the quantum Hall regime of two-dimensional electron systems. We focus on the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) at half filling of the lowest Landau level. We find that the magnitude of anisotropy transferred to the composite fermions decreases very rapidly with $N$. We demonstrate this by performing density matrix normalization group calculations on the CFL, and comparing the anisotropy of the composite fermion Fermi contour with that of the (non-interacting) electron Fermi contour at zero magnetic fi…
We perform density-matrix renormalization group studies of a two-dimensional electron gas in a high magnetic field and with an anisotropic band mass. At half-filling in the lowest Landau level, such a system is a Fermi liquid of composite fermions. By measuring the Fermi surface of these composite fermions, we determine a relationship between the anisotropy of composite fermion dispersion, $α_{CF}$, and the original anisotropy $α_F$ of the fermion dispersion at zero magnetic field. For systems where the electrons interact via a Coulomb interaction, we find $α_{CF}=\sqrt{α_F}$ within our numeri…
The magnetic field redefinition in Jain's composite fermion model for the fractional quantum Hall effect is shown to be effectively described by a mean-field approximation of a model containing a Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge field non-minimally coupled to matter. Also an explicit non-relativistic limit of the non-minimal (2+1)D Dirac equation is derived.
Composite Fermi liquids (CFLs) are compressible states that can occur for 2D interacting fermions confined in the lowest Landau level at certain Landau level fillings. They have been understood as Fermi seas formed by composite fermions which are bound states of electromagnetic fluxes and electrons as reported by Halperin, Lee and Read [Phys. Rev. B 47, 7312 (1993)]. At half filling, an explicitly particle-hole symmetric theory based on Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)] as an alternative low energy description. In this work, we investigate the Berry curvature o…
We propose that string theory in the background of dyon black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is holographic dual to conformally invariant composite Dirac fermion metal. By utilizing S-duality map, we show that thermodynamic and transport properties of the black hole match with those of composite fermion metal, exhibiting Fermi liquid-like. Built upon Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition, we argue that turning on magnetic charges to electric black hole along the orbit of Gamma(2) subgroup of SL(2,Z) is equivalent to attaching even unit of statistical flux quanta …
Our goal is to understand the phenomena arising in optical lattice fermions at low temperature in an external magnetic field. Varying the field, the attraction between any two fermions can be made arbitrarily strong, where composite bosons form via so-called Feshbach resonances. By setting up strong-coupling equations for fermions, we find that in spatial dimension $d>2$ they couple to bosons which dress up fermions and lead to new massive composite fermions. At low enough temperature, we obtain the critical temperature at which composite bosons undergo the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), lead…
One of the most spectacular experimental findings in the fractional quantum Hall effect is evidence for an emergent Fermi surface when the electron density is nearly half the density of magnetic flux quanta ($ν= 1/2$). The seminal work of Halperin, Lee, and Read (HLR) first predicted that at $ν= 1/2$ composite fermions--bound states of an electron and a pair of vortices--experience zero net magnetic field and can form a "composite Fermi liquid" with an emergent Fermi surface. In this paper we use infinite cylinder DMRG to provide compelling numerical evidence for the existence of a Fermi sea o…
