In Field theories with simple or semi-simple unitary, local or global symmetries, the electric charge is related to a global one. This is the case also in electroweak gauge theories even before the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), where these quantities are defined in order to expand the Lagrangian respecting the conservation laws after the breaking. So, the electric charge assignment within a given multiplet is done (in units of jej) considering only global symmetries, even though in general, the electric charge operator is a linear combination of the diagonal generators of the non-Abelian symmetry plus some Abelian factor. In this work we show how this operator can be systematically constructed from any representation in the Standard Model and some of its extensions as the 3-3-1, left-right symmetric and grand unified models.
The extensions of the Standard Model based on the $SU(3)_{C} \otimes SU(3)_{L} \otimes U(1)_{X}$ gauge group are known as 331 Models. Different properties such as the fermion assignment and the electric charges of the exotic spectrum, that defines a particular 331 model, are fixed by a $β$ parameter. In this article we study the electric charge quantization in two versions of the 331 models, set by the conditions $β=1/\left( 3\sqrt{3}\right)$ and $β=0$. In these frameworks, arise exotic particles, for instance, new leptons and gauge bosons with a fractional electric charge. Additionally, depen…
The conditions for the absence of gauge anomalies in effective field theories (EFT) are rivisited. General results from the cohomology of the BRST operator do not prevent potential anomalies arising from the non-renormalizable sector, when the gauge group is not semi-simple, like in the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT). By considering a simple explicit model that mimics the SMEFT properties, we compute the anomaly in the regularized theory, including a complete set of dimension six operators. We show that the dependence of the anomaly on the non-renormalizable part can be removed by adding a local c…
It is shown that, in some non-QCD theories, there are effects shared by QCD: (i)~in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory containing a nonlinear spinor field, there is a mass gap; (ii)~in SU(3) Proca-Higgs theory, there are flux tube solutions with a longitudinal electric field required for producing a force binding quarks; (iii)~in non-Abelian Proca-Higgs theories, there exist flux tube solutions with a momentum directed along the tube axis and particlelike solutions with a nonvanishing total angular momentum created by crossed color electric and magnetic fields; in QCD, such configurations may contribute …
Theories with both electric and magnetic charges ("mutually non-local" theories) have several major obstacles to calculating scattering amplitudes. Even when the interaction arises through the kinetic mixing of two, otherwise independent, U(1)'s, so that all low-energy interactions are perturbative, difficulties remain: using a self-dual, local formalism leads to spurious poles at any finite order in perturbation theory. Correct calculations must show how the spurious poles cancel in observable scattering amplitudes. Consistency requires that one type of charge is confined as a result of one o…
New sources of CP violation beyond the Standard Model are crucial to explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. We discuss the impact of new CP violating interactions in theories where a dark matter candidate is predicted by the cancellation of gauge anomalies. In these theories, the constraint on the dark matter relic density implies an upper bound on the new symmetry breaking scale from which all new states acquire their masses. We investigate in detail the predictions for electric dipole moments and show that if the relevant CP-violating phase is large, experiments such as the ACME colla…
We study the stability of fluctuations around a homogeneous non-Abelian electric field background that is of a form that is protected from Schwinger pair production. Our analysis identifies the unstable modes and we find a limiting set of parameters for which there are no instabilities. We discuss potential implications of our analysis for confining strings in non-Abelian gauge theories.
We find all the integer charge solutions to the equations for the cancellation of local gauge anomalies in a class of gauge theories which extend the Standard Model (SM) by a gauge group of the form $G \times U(1)$, where $G$ is an arbitrary semisimple compact Lie group. The SM fermions are assumed to be neutral under $G \times U(1)$ gauge interactions, while the new fermions transform in non-trivial representations of both the new and the SM gauge groups. Our analysis is valid also when the latter is embedded in an arbitrary semisimple compact Lie group. Theories with this structure have been…
