We investigate when a commutative ring spectrum $R$ satisfies a homotopical version of local Gorenstein duality, extending the notion previously studied by Greenlees. In order to do this, we prove an ascent theorem for local Gorenstein duality along morphisms of $k$-algebras. Our main examples are of the form $R = C^*(X;k)$, the ring spectrum of cochains on a space $X$ for a field $k$. In particular, we establish local Gorenstein duality in characteristic $p$ for $p$-compact groups and $p$-local finite groups as well as for $k = \Q$ and $X$ a simply connected space which is Gorenstein in the sense of Dwyer, Greenlees, and Iyengar.
The paper relates the Gorenstein duality statements studied by the first author to the Anderson duality statements studied by the second author, and explains how to use local cohomology and invariant theory to understand the numerology of shifts in simple cases.
Following Hu and Kriz, we study the $C_2$-spectra $BP\mathbb{R}\langle n \rangle$ and $E\mathbb{R}(n)$ that refine the usual truncated Brown-Peterson and the Johnson-Wilson spectra. In particular, we show that they satisfy Gorenstein duality with a representation grading shift and identify their Anderson duals. We also compute the associated local cohomology spectral sequence in the cases $n=1$ and $2$.
We establish equalities between cochain and chain type levels of maps by making use of exact functors which connect appropriate derived and coderived categories. Relevant conditions for levels of maps to be finite are extracted from the equalities which we call duality on the levels. Moreover, we give a lower bound of the cochain type level of the diagonal map on the classifying space of a Lie group by considering the ghostness of a shriek map which appears in derived string topology. A variant of Koszul duality for a differential graded algebra is also discussed.
The paper describes a duality phenomenon for cohomology theories with the character of Gorenstein rings. For a connective cohomology theory with the p-local integers in degree 0, and coefficient ring R_* Gorenstein of shift 0, this states that for X with R_*(X) torsion, we have R^*(X)=Σ^a Hom( R_*(X), Z/p^{\infty}). A corresponding statement for modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring spectrum is also proved. [Minor typographical and bibliographic changes to the last version.]
Gross and Hopkins have proved that in chromatic stable homotopy, Spanier-Whitehead duality nearly coincides with Brown-Comenetz duality. Our goal is to give a conceptual interpretation for this phenomenon in terms of the Gorenstein condition for maps of ring spectra in the sense of [Duality in algebra and topology, Adv. Math. 200 (2006), 357--402. arXiv: math.AT/0510247 ]. We describe a general notion of Brown-Comenetz dualizing module for a map of ring spectra and show that in this context such dualizing modules correspond bijectively to invertible K(n)-local spectra.
Associated with an augmented differential graded algebra $R= R^{\geq 0}$ is a homotopy invariant ${\mathcal T}(R)$. This is a graded vector space, and if $H^0(R)$ is the ground field and $H^{>N}(R)= 0$ then dim$\, {\mathcal T}(R)= 1$ if and only if $H(R)$ is a Poincaré duality algebra. In the case of Sullivan extensions $\land W\to \land W\otimes \land Z\to \land Z$ in which dim$\, H(\land Z)<\infty$ we show that $${\mathcal T}(\land W\otimes \land Z)= {\mathcal T}(\land W)\otimes {\mathcal T}(\land Z).$$ This is applied to finite dimensional CW complexes $X$ where the fundamental group $G$ ac…
Given an algebraic structure on the homology of a chain complex, we define its realization space as a Kan complex whose vertices are the structures up to homotopy realizing this structure at the homology level. Our algebraic structures are parametrised by props and thus include various kinds of bialgebras. We give a general formula to compute subsets of equivalences classes of realizations as quotients of automorphism groups, and determine the higher homotopy groups via the cohomology of deformation complexes. As a motivating example, we compute subsets of equivalences classes of realizations …
The purpose of this paper is to describe a general and simple setting for defining $(g,p+q)$-string operations on a Poincaré duality space and more generally on a Gorenstein space. Gorenstein spaces include Poincaré duality spaces as well as classifying spaces or homotopy quotients of connected Lie groups. Our presentation implies directly the homotopy invariance of each $(g,p+q)$-string operation as well as it leads to explicit computations.
The singular cochain complex of a topological space is a classical object. It is a Differential Graded algebra which has been studied intensively with a range of methods, not least within rational homotopy theory. More recently, the tools of Auslander-Reiten theory have also been applied to the singular cochain complex. One of the highlights is that by these methods, each Poincare duality space gives rise to a Calabi-Yau category. This paper is a review of the theory.
Banagl's method of intersection spaces allows to modify certain types of stratified pseudomanifolds near the singular set in such a way that the rational Betti numbers of the modified spaces satisfy generalized Poincaré duality in analogy with Goresky-MacPherson's intersection homology. In the case of one isolated singularity, we show that the duality isomorphism comes from a nondegenerate intersection pairing which depends on the choice of a chain representative of the fundamental class of the regular stratum. On the technical side, we use piecewise linear polynomial differential forms due to…
Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a semiseparated Noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex $D$. We lift some well-known triangulated equivalences associated with Grothendieck duality to Quillen equivalences of model categories. In the process we are able to show that the Gorenstein flat model structure, on the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{X}$, is Quillen equivalent to the Gorenstein injective model structure. Also noteworthy is that we extend the recollement of Krause to hold without the Noetherian condition. Using a set of flat generators, it holds for any quasi-compact semiseparated sc…
The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operati…
We discuss proofs of local cohomology theorems for topological modular forms, based on Mahowald-Rezk duality and on Gorenstein duality, and then make the associated local cohomology spectral sequences explicit, including their differential patterns and hidden extensions.
Let G be a topological group such that its homology H(G) with coefficients in a principal ideal domain R is an exterior algebra, generated in odd degrees. We show that the singular cochain functor carries the duality between G-spaces and spaces over BG to the Koszul duality between modules up to homotopy over H(G) and H^*(BG). This gives in particular a Cartan-type model for the equivariant cohomology of a G-space. As another corollary, we obtain a multiplicative quasi-isomorphism C^*(BG) -> H^*(BG). A key step in the proof is to show that a differential Hopf algebra is formal in the category …
We consider the Gorenstein condition for topological Hochschild homology, and show that it holds remarkably often. More precisely, if R is a commutative ring spectrum and and R----->k is a ring map to a field of characteristic p then, provided k is small as an R-module, THH(R;k) is Gorenstein in the sense of Dwyer-Greenlees-Iyengar. In particular, this holds if R is a (conventional) regular local ring with residue field k of characteristic p. Using only Bokstedt's calculation of THH(k), this gives a non-calculational proof of dualities observed in calculations by Bokstedt, McClure-Staffeldt, A…
We show that the complex $C_\bullet X$ of rational simplicial chains on a compact and triangulated Poincaré duality space $X$ of dimension $d$ is an A$_\infty$ coalgebra with $\infty$ duality. This is the structure required for an A$_\infty$ version of the cyclic Deligne conjecture. One corollary is that the shifted Hochschild cohomology $HH^{\bullet+d} (C^\bullet X, C_\bullet X)$ of the cochain algebra $C^\bullet X$ with values in $C_\bullet X$ has a BV structure. This implies, if $X$ is moreover simply connected, that the shifted homology $H_{\bullet+d}LX$ of the free loop space admits a BV …
Let $M$ be any simply-connected Gorenstein space over any field. Félix and Thomas have extended to simply-connected Gorenstein spaces, the loop (co)products of Chas and Sullivan on the homology of the free loop space $H_*(LM)$. We describe these loop (co)products in terms of the torsion and extension functors by developing string topology in appropriate derived categories. As a consequence, we show that the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the loop homology of a Gorenstein space admits a multiplication and a comultiplication with shifted degree which are compatible with the loop…
In this paper we obtain a description of the Grothendieck group of complex vector bundles over the classifying space of a p-local finite group in terms of representation rings of subgroups of its Sylow. We also prove a stable elements formula for generalized cohomological invariants of p-local finite groups, which is used to show the existence of unitary embeddings of p-local finite groups. Finally, we show that the augmentation map for the cochains of the classifying space of a p-local finite group is Gorenstein in the sense of Dwyer-Greenlees-Iyengar and obtain some consequences about the co…
In this paper we take some classical ideas from commutative algebra, mostly ideas involving duality, and apply them in algebraic topology. To accomplish this we interpret properties of ordinary commutative rings in such a way that they can be extended to the more general rings that come up in homotopy theory. Amongst the rings we work with are the differential graded ring of cochains on a space, the differential graded ring of chains on the loop space, and various ring spectra, e.g., the Spanier-Whitehead duals of finite spectra or chromatic localizations of the sphere spectrum. Maybe the most…
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we consider any higher algebraic structures that can be described as algebras over an operad O. We prove that the fundamental adjunction comparing O-algebra spectra with coalgebra spectra over the associated comonad K, via topological Quillen homology (or TQ-homology), can be turned into an equivalence of homotopy theories by replacing O-algebras with the full subcategory of 0-connected O-algebras. This resolves in the affirmative the 0-connected case of a conjecture of Francis-Gaitsgory. This derived Koszul duality result can be thought of as the s…
We generalize Quillen's $F$-isomorphism theorem, Quillen's stratification theorem, the stable transfer, and the finite generation of cohomology rings from finite groups to homotopical groups. As a consequence, we show that the category of module spectra over $C^*(B\mathcal{G},\mathbb{F}_p)$ is stratified and costratified for a large class of $p$-local compact groups $\mathcal{G}$ including compact Lie groups, connected $p$-compact groups, and $p$-local finite groups, thereby giving a support-theoretic classification of all localizing and colocalizing subcategories of this category. Moreover, w…
This thesis establishes a generalised setting with which to unify the study of finite local complexity (FLC) patterns. The abstract notion of a "pattern" is introduced, which may be seen as an analogue of the space group of isometries preserving a tiling but where, instead, one considers partial isometries preserving portions of it. These inverse semigroups of partial transformations are the suitable analogue of the space group for patterns with FLC but few global symmetries. In a similar vein we introduce the notion of a \emph{collage}, a system of equivalence relations on the ambient space o…
