In this paper we take some classical ideas from commutative algebra, mostly ideas involving duality, and apply them in algebraic topology. To accomplish this we interpret properties of ordinary commutative rings in such a way that they can be extended to the more general rings that come up in homotopy theory. Amongst the rings we work with are the differential graded ring of cochains on a space, the differential graded ring of chains on the loop space, and various ring spectra, e.g., the Spanier-Whitehead duals of finite spectra or chromatic localizations of the sphere spectrum.
Maybe the most important contribution of this paper is the conceptual framework, which allows us to view all of the following dualities: Poincare duality for manifolds, Gorenstein duality for commutative rings, Benson-Carlson duality for cohomology rings of finite groups, Poincare duality for groups, Gross-Hopkins duality in chromatic stable homotopy theory, as examples of a single phenomenon. Beyond setting up this framework, though, we prove some new results, both in algebra and topology, and give new proofs of a number of old results.
We characterise integral Poincaré duality moment-angle complexes $\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}}$ in combinatorial terms of the Fan-Wang duality of the simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$, and consequently in algebraic terms of the Gorenstein duality of the Stanley-Reisner ring $\mathbb{Z}[\mathcal{K}]$. We extend Poincaré duality results to certain polyhedral products using polyhedral join products of simplicial complexes.
We construct an equivalence of $E_{2}$ algebras between two models for the Thom spectrum of the free loop space that are related by derived Koszul duality. To do this, we describe the functoriality and invariance properties of topological Hochschild cohomology.
The classical Buscher rules describe T-duality for metrics and B-fields in a topologically trivial setting. On the other hand, topological T-duality addresses aspects of non-trivial topology while neglecting metrics and B-fields. In this article we develop a new unifying framework for both aspects.
Luc Menichi showed that the BV algebras on $H^\bullet(LS^2;Z_2)[-2]$ coming from string topology and the one on $HH^\bullet(H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2),H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2))$ using Poincaré duality on $H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2)$ are not isomorphic. In this note we show how one can obtain the string topology BV algebra on Hochschild cohomology using a Poincaré duality structure with higher homotopies. This Poincaré duality (with higher homotopies) on cohomology is induced by a local Poincaré duality (with higher homotopies) on the cochain level.
The first goal of this paper is to provide an abstract framework in which to formulate and study local duality in various algebraic and topological contexts. For any stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ together with a collection of compact objects $\mathcal{K} \subset \mathcal{C}$ we construct local cohomology and local homology functors satisfying an abstract version of local duality. When specialized to the derived category of a commutative ring $A$ and a suitable ideal in $A$, we recover the classical local duality due to Grothendieck as well as generalizations by Greenlees and May. We develop a curved Koszul duality theory for algebras presented by quadratic-linear-constant relations over unital versions of binary quadratic operads. As an application, we study Poisson $n$-algebras given by polynomial functions on a standard shifted symplectic space. We compute explicit resolutions of these algebras using curved Koszul duality. We use these resolutions to compute derived enveloping algebras and factorization homology on parallelized simply connected closed manifolds with coefficients in these Poisson $n$-algebras.
We prove a duality for factorization homology which generalizes both usual Poincaré duality for manifolds and Koszul duality for $\mathcal{E}_n$-algebras. The duality has application to the Hochschild homology of associative algebras and enveloping algebras of Lie algebras. We interpret our result at the level of topological quantum field theory.
We study the Koszul duality between augmented $E_n$-algebras and augmented $E_n$-coalgebras in a symmetric monoidal stable infinity $1$-category equipped with a filtration in a suitable sense. We obtain that the Koszul duality constructions restrict to an equivalence between augmented algebras and coalgebras which have some positivity and completeness with respect to the filtration. We also obtain that the Koszul duality construction is functorial between carefully constructed generalized Morita categories consisting of those algebras/coalgebras in each dimension.
The general goal of this paper is to gather and review several methods from homotopy and combinatorial topology and formal concepts analysis (FCA) and analyze their connections. FCA appears naturally in the problem of combinatorial simplification of simplicial complexes and allows to see a certain duality on a class of simplicial complexes. This duality generalizes Poincare duality on cell subdivisions of manifolds. On the other hand, with the notion of a topological formal context, we review the classical proofs of two basic theorems of homotopy topology: Alexandrov Nerve theorem and Quillen-…
