We find exact solutions for f (T) teleparallel gravity for the cases of spherically and cylindrically symmetric tetrads. The adopted method is based on the search for Noether symmetries of point-like Lagrangians defined in Jordan and Einstein frames. Constants of motion are used to reduce the dynamical system. We first consider the Lagrangian defined in the Jordan frame for a spherically symmetric tetrad and, by the help of two constants of motion, we eliminate a tetrad potential and integrate the other. The more complicated structure in the Einstein frame is also overcome by the same method. After that we obtain the Jordan frame Lagrangian for a general cylindrically symmetric tetrad. Following the same procedure adopted in the spherically symmetric case, we again obtain the tetrad potentials and then the exact solutions.
The solutions for the field equations of $f(R)$ gravity are investigated in static cylindrically symmetric space-time. Conserved quantities of the system, as well as unknown functions, can be determined with the help of the Noether symmetry method. In this article, some unknown values of the equations of state parameter (EoS) have emerged as a result of the constraints obtained by analyzing the Noether symmetry equations for the $f(R)=f_0 R$ case. Consequently, several new exact solutions have been found for cases of General Relativity in static cylindrically symmetrical space-time for the non…
The $f(R)$ theory is considered for static cylindrically symmetric and plane-symmetric spacetimes. In order to find solutions to the field equations of these models, the Noether symmetry method is used. First, we examine the GR case for cylindrically symmetrical space-time with the $w=-1$ dark energy state. Then, with the assumption of $f(R) = f_0R^n$, cases with matter and non-matter are examined and general solutions are determined for both space-times. Thus, it is shown that inclusive new solutions are obtained, considering the Noether symmetric conditions. In addition, the GR limit for eac…
Spherical symmetry for f(R)-gravity is discussed by searching for Noether symmetries. The method consists in selecting conserved quantities in form of currents that reduce dynamics of f(R)-models compatible with symmetries. In this way we get a general method to obtain constants of motion without setting a priori the form of f(R). In this sense, the Noether symmetry results a physical criterium. Relevant cases are discussed.
We search for spherically symmetric solutions of f(R) theories of gravity via the Noether Symmetry Approach. A general formalism in the metric framework is developed considering a point-like f(R)-Lagrangian where spherical symmetry is required. Examples of exact solutions are given.
In this paper we give a complete classification of spherically symmetric static space-times by their Noether symmetries. The determining equations for Noether symmetries are obtained by using the usual Lagrangian of a general spherically symmetric static spacetime which are integrated for each case. In particular we observe that spherically symmetric static spacetimes are categorized into six distinct classes corresponding to Noether algebra of dimensions 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17. Using Noether`s theorem we also write down the first integrals for each class of such spacetimes corresponding to the…
It is broadly known that Lie point symmetries and their subcase, Noether symmetries, can be used as a geometric criterion to select alternative theories of gravity. Here, we use Noether symmetries as a selection criterion to distinguish those models of $f(R,G)$ theory, with $R$ and $G$ being the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet scalars respectively, that are invariant under point transformations in a spherically symmetric background. In total, we find ten different forms of $f$ that present symmetries and calculate their invariant quantities, i.e Noether vector fields. Furthermore, we use these Noet…
We calculate the Noether currents and charges for Einstein-Maxwell theory using a version of the Wald approach. In spherical symmetry, the choice of time can be taken as the Kodama vector. For the static case, the resulting combined Einstein-Maxwell charge is just the mass of the black hole. Using either a classically defined entropy or the Iyer-Wald selection rules, the entropy is found to be just a quarter of the area of the trapping horizon. We propose identifying the combined Noether charge as an energy associated with the Kodama time. For the extremal black hole case, we discuss the probl…
The principles and detection of gravitational waves by resonant antennas are briefly discussed. But the main purpose of this short note is to compare the two geometries of resonant antennas, the well-known cylindrical to the spherical type. Some features of a two sphere observatory are also discussed.
Comments are made on some recently published papers on matter collineations of plane symmetric, cylindrically symmetric and spherically symmetric spacetimes.
Gravitational field of a cylindrical Nambu-Goto wall in the vacuum spacetime is considered in order to clarify the interaction between Nambu-Goto membranes and gravitational waves. If one neglects the emission of gravitational waves by the wall motion, the spacetime becomes singular. It is also shown that the emission of gravitational waves does occur by the motion of the cylindrical wall if the initial data is singularity free. The energy loss rate due to radiation of gravitational waves agrees with that estimated from the test wall motion and the quadrupole formula for the gravitational wave…
Finding spherically symmetric exact solutions in modified gravity is usually a difficult task. In this paper we use the Noether's symmetry approach for a modified Teleparallel theory of gravity labelled as $f(T,B)$ gravity where $T$ is the scalar torsion and $B$ the boundary term. Using the Noether's theorem, we were able to find exact spherically symmetric solutions for different forms of the function $f(T,B)$ coming from the Noether's symmetries.

Exact solutions of Einstein equations with null Riemman-Christoffel curvature tensor everywhere, except on a hypersurface, are studied using quantum particles obeying the Klein-Gordon equation. We consider the particular cases when the curvature is represented by a Dirac delta function with support either on a sphere or on a cylinder (spherical and cylindrical shells). In particular, we analyze the necessity of extra boundary conditions on the shells.
Spherically symmetric solutions for f(T) gravity models are derived by the so called Noether Symmetry Approach. First, we present a full set of Noether symmetries for some minisuperspace models. Then, we compute analytical solutions and find that spherically symmetric solutions in f(T) gravity can be recast in terms of Schwarzschild-like solutions modified by a distortion function depending on a characteristic radius. The obtained solutions are more general than those obtained by the usual solution methods.
The exact solutions of spherically symmetric space-times are explored by using Noether symmetries in $f(R,ϕ,X)$ gravity with $R$ the scalar curvature, $ϕ$ a scalar field and $X$ the kinetic term of $ϕ$. Some of these solutions can represent new black holes solutions in this extended theory of gravity. The classical Noether approach is particularly applied to acquire the Noether symmetry in $f(R,ϕ,X)$ gravity. Under the classical Noether theorem, it is shown that the Noether symmetry in $f(R,ϕ,X)$ gravity yields the solvable first integral of motion. With the conservation relation obtained from…
We use Noether symmetry approach to find spherically symmetric static solutions of the non-minimally coupled electromagnetic fields to gravity. We construct the point-like Lagrangian under the spherical symmetry assumption. Then we determine Noether symmetry and the corresponding conserved charge. We derive Euler-Lagrange equations from this point-like Lagrangian and show that these equations are same with the differential equations derived from the field equations of the model. Also we give two new exact asymptotically flat solutions to these equations and investigate some thermodynamic prope…
We provide Vasiliev's four-dimensional bosonic higher-spin gravities with six families of exact solutions admitting two commuting Killing vectors. Each family contains a subset of generalized Petrov Type-D solutions in which one of the two so(2) symmetries enhances to either so(3) or so(2,1). In particular, the spherically symmetric solutions are static and we expect one of them to be gauge-equivalent to the extremal Didenko-Vasiliev solution given in arXiv:0906.3898. The solutions activate all spins and can be characterized either via generalized electric and magnetic charges defined asymptot…
This paper is devoted to investigate $f(R)$ gravity using Noether symmetry approach. For this purpose, we consider Friedmann Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe and spherically symmetric spacetimes. The Noether symmetry generators are evaluated for some specific choice of $f(R)$ models in the presence of gauge term. Further, we calculate the corresponding conserved quantities in each case. Moreover, the importance and stability criteria of these models are discussed.
The conserved quantities, that are, gravitational energy-momentum and its relevant quantities are investigated for cylindrical and spherical gravitational waves in the framework of teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity using the Hamiltonian approach. For both cylindrical and spherical gravitational waves, we obtain definite energy and constant momentum. The constant momentum shows consistency with the results available in General Relativity and teleparallel gravity. The angular momentum for cylindrical and spherical gravitational waves also turn out to be constant. Further, we evaluate…
The Noether Symmetry Approach can be used to construct spherically symmetric solutions in $f({\cal R})$ gravity. Specifically, the Noether conserved quantity is related to the gravitational mass and a gravitational radius that reduces to the Schwarzschild radius in the limit $f({\cal R})\rightarrow {\cal R}$. We show that it is possible to construct the $M-R$ relation for neutron stars depending on the Noether conserved quantity and the associated gravitational radius. This approach enables the recovery of extreme massive stars that could not be stable in the standard Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkof…
We consider two proposals for defining black hole entropy in spherical symmetry, where the horizon is defined locally as a trapping horizon. The first case, boundary terms in a dual-null form of the reduced action in two dimensions, gives a result that is proportional to the area. The second case, Wald's Noether current method, is generalized to dynamic black holes, giving an entropy that is just the area of the trapping horizon. These results are compared with a generalized first law of thermodynamics.
We study the canonical formalism of a spherically symmetric space-time. In the context of the 3+1 decomposition with respect to the radial coordinate $r$, we set up an effective Lagrangian in which a couple of metric functions play the role of independent variables. We show that the resulting $r$-Hamiltonian yields the correct classical solutions which can be identified with the Schwarzschild black hole. The Noether symmetry of model is then investigated by utilizing the behavior of the corresponding Lagrangian under the infinitesimal generators of the desired symmetry. According to the Noethe…
The explicit relationship is determined between the interior properties of a static cylindrical matter distribution and the metric of the exterior space-time according to Einstein gravity for space-time dimensionality larger or equal to four. This is achieved through use of a coordinate system isotropic in the transverse coordinates. As a corollary, similar results are obtained for a spherical matter distribution in Brans-Dicke gravity for dimensions larger than or equal to three. The approach used here leads to consistency conditions for those parameters characterizing the exterior metric. It…
We obtain Vaidya-like solutions to include both a null fluid and a string fluid in non-spherical (plane symmetric and cylindrical symmetric) anti-de Sitter space-times. Assuming that string fluid diffuse, we find exact solutions of Einstein's field equations. Thus we extend a recent work of Glass and Krisch \cite {gk} to non-spherical anti-de Sitter space-times.
In this paper, we analyze static traversable wormholes via Noether symmetry technique in modified Gauss-Bonnet $f(\mathcal{G})$ theory of gravity (where $\mathcal{G}$ represents Gauss-Bonnet term). We assume isotropic matter configuration and spherically symmetric metric. We construct three $f(\mathcal{G})$ models, i.e, linear, quadratic and exponential forms and examine the consistency of these models. The traversable nature of wormhole solutions is discussed via null energy bound of the effective stress-energy tensor while physical behavior is studied through standard energy bounds of isotro…
We report off-shell Noether currents obtained from off-shell Noether potentials for first-order general relativity described by $n$-dimensional Palatini and Holst Lagrangians including the cosmological constant. These off-shell currents and potentials are achieved by using the corresponding Lagrangian and the off-shell Noether identities satisfied by diffeomorphisms generated by arbitrary vector fields, local $SO(n)$ or $SO(n-1,1)$ transformations, `improved diffeomorphisms', and the `generalization of local translations' of the orthonormal frame and the connection. A remarkable aspect of our …
We study a theory of gravity of the form $f(\mathcal{G})$ where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant without considering the standard Einstein-Hilbert term as common in the literature, in arbitrary $(d+1)$ dimensions. The approach is motivated by the fact that, in particular conditions, the Ricci curvature scalar can be easily recovered and then a pure $f(\cal G)$ gravity can be considered a further generalization of General Relativity like $f(R)$ gravity. Searching for Noether symmetries, we specify the functional forms invariant under point transformations in a static and …
This work aims to investigate some possible emergence of relativistic compact stellar objects in modified $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity using Noether symmetry approach. For this purpose, we assume static spherically symmetric spacetime in the presence of isotropic matter distribution. We construct Noether symmetry generators along with associated conserved quantities by considering the standard choice of viable $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity model i.e. $f(\mathcal{G})= α\mathcal{G}^{n}$, where $α$ is the model parameter. In particular, we use conservation relation acquired from the classical Noether appr…
Considering encouraging Virbhadra's results about energy distribution of non-static spherically symmetric metrics in Kerr-Schild class, it would be interesting to study some space-times with other symmetries. Using different energy-momentum complexes, i.e. Møller, Einstein, and Tolman, in static plane-symmetric and cylindrically symmetric solutions of Einstein-Maxwell equations in 3+1 dimensions, energy (due to matter and fields including gravity) distribution is studied. Energy expressions are obtained finite and well-defined. calculations show interesting coincidences between the results obt…
It is shown that the existence of static, cylindrically symmetric wormholes does not require violation of the weak or null energy conditions near the throat, and cylindrically symmetric wormhole geometries can appear with less exotic sources than wormholes whose throats have a spherical topology. Examples of exact wormhole solutions are given with scalar, spinor and electromagnetic fields as sources, and these fields are not necessarily phantom. In particular, there are wormhole solutions for a massless, minimally coupled scalar field in the presence of a negative cosmological constant, and fo…
We explore the collision of two cylindrical bubbles in classical general relativity with a scalar field stress-energy tensor. Inside each bubble the field rests at a local minimum of the potential with non-negative energy density. Outside the field rests at zero potential, the global minimum. The calculation resolves the connection from the inner de-Sitter region to the asymptotically flat Minkowski spacetime. We choose initial conditions such that the two bubbles collide and study the full nonlinear evolution by means of a two-dimensional numerical simulation of Einstein's equations. The coll…
In the present work the collapse scenario of some exact non-spherical models with a minimally coupled scalar field is studied. Scalar field collapse with planar as well as toroidal, cylindrical and pseudoplanar symmetries have been investigated. It is shown that the scalar field may have collapsing modes even if it has the equation of state corresponding to that of a dark energy.
This brief review discusses the existence conditions of wormhole throats and wormholes as global configurations in general relativity under the assumptions of cylindrical and axial symmetries. It is pointed out, in particular, that wormhole throats can exist in static, cylindrically symmetric space-times under slightly different conditions as compared with spherical symmetry. In cylindrical space-time with rotation, throats can exist in the presence of ordinary matter or even in vacuum; however, there are substantial difficulties in obtaining asymptotically flat wormhole configurations without…
We obtain the analogue of collapsing Vaidya-like solution to include both a null fluid and a string fluid, with a linear equation of state ($p_{\bot} = k ρ$), in non-spherical (plane symmetric and cylindrically symmetric) anti-de Sitter space-timess. It turns out that the non-spherical collapse of two fluid in anti-de Sitter space-times, in accordance with cosmic censorship, proceed to form black holes, i.e., on naked singularity ever forms, violating hoop conjecture.
We elucidate the dynamics of a thin spherical material shell with a tangential pressure, using a new approach. This is both simpler than the traditional method of extrinsic curvature junction conditions (which we also employ), and suggests an expression for a `gravitational potential energy' of the shell. Such a shell, if slowly spinning, can rotationally drag the inertial frames within it through a finite angle as it collapses and rebounds from a minimum radius. Rebounding `spherical' and cylindrical pulses of rotating gravitational waves were studied previously. Here we calculate their angul…
So far all known singularity-free cosmological models are cylindrically symmetric. Here we present a new family of spherically symmetric non-singular models filled with imperfect fluid and radial heat flow, and satisfying the weak and strong energy conditions. For large $t$ anisotropy in pressure and heat flux tend to vanish leading to a perfect fluid. There is a free function of time in the model, which can be suitably chosen for non-singular behaviour and there exist multiplicity of such choices.
We construct conformastat spherically symmetric spacetimes representing anisotropic fluid matter distributions from given solutions of the Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity and its corresponding circular speed profile. As simple examples, we present three families of spherically symmetric spacetimes which we apply in constructing new models of relativistic anisotropic thick spherical shells, and of relativistic galaxy models composite by a central spherical bulge, the thick disk and the dark matter halo, writing in this case the metric in cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the geodesic m…
It is shown, for the self-consistent system of scalar, electro-magnetic and gravitational fields in general relativity, that the equations of motion admit a special kind of solutions with spherical or cylindrical symmetry. For these solutions, the physical fields vanish and the space-time is flat outside of the critical sphere or cylinder. Therefore, the mass and the electric charge of these configurations are zero. The principal difference between droplet-like solutions with spherical symmetry and those with cylindrical one has been established. In the first case there exists a possibility of…
We investigated numerically dyon-like solutions of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills system on a cylindrically symmetric space time with a cosmological constant. We find a new kind of behaviour not found in the spherically symmetric models. For positive values of $Λ$ we have an oscillatory behaviour of the magnetic component of the YM field around the r-axis, so there is an arbitrary number of nodes. For increasing positive $Λ$, the frequency increases also and the solution breaks down at finite radius, indicating a singularity. The electric component, however, approaches a constant value. After f…
