Repeatedly alternating the sign of dispersion along a waveguide substantially increases the bandwidth to input peak power efficiency of supercontinuum generation (SCG). Here, we explore, theoretically and numerically, how to optimize sign-alternating dispersion waveguides for nonlinear pulse compression, so that the compression ratio is maximized. By exploring a previously unknown SCG phase effect, we find emergent phase effects unique to these structures where the spectral phase converges to a parabolic profile independent of uncompensated higher-order dispersion. The combination of an easy to compress phase spectrum, with low input power requirements, then makes sign-alternating dispersion a scheme for high-quality nonlinear pulse compression that removes the need for high powered lasers. Also, we show a new scheme for the design of practical waveguide segments that can compress SCG pulses to near transform-limited durations, which is integral for the design of these alternated waveguides and in general, for nonlinear pulse compression experiments. We conclude by showing how compression can be maximized for alternating dispersion waveguides within the integrated photonics platform, showing compression to two optical cycles.
We demonstrate soliton-effect pulse compression in mm-long photonic crystal waveguides resulting from strong anomalous dispersion and self-phase modulation. Compression from 3ps to 580fs, at low pulse energies(~10pJ), is measured via autocorrelation.
We propose a novel method based on the so-called shortcut to adiabatic passage techniques to achieve fast compression of temporal solitons in a nonlinear waveguide. We demonstrate that soliton compression could be achieved, in principle, at an arbitrarily small distance by inverse engineering the pulse width and the nonlinearity of the medium. The proposed scheme could possibly be exploited for various short-distance communication protocols and may be even in nonlinear guided wave-optics devices and generation of ultrashort soliton pulses.
Fully integrated supercontinuum sources on-chip are critical to enabling applications such as portable and mechanically-stable medical imaging devices, chemical sensing and LiDAR. However, the low-efficiency of current supercontinuum generation schemes prevent full on-chip integration. In this letter, we present a scheme where the input energy requirements for integrated supercontinuum generation is drastically lowered by orders of magnitude, for bandwidth generation of the order of 500 to 1000 nm. Through sign-alternating the dispersion in a CMOS compatible silicon nitride waveguide, we achie…
A numerical study of the properties of Gaussian pulses propagating in planar waveguide under the combined effect of positive Kerr-type nonlinearity, diffraction in planar waveguides and anomalous or normal dispersion, is presented. It is demonstrated how the relative strength of dispersion and diffraction, the strength of nonlinearity and the initial spatial and temporal pulse chirps effect on the parameters of pulse compression, such as the maximal compression factor and the distance to the point of maximal compression.
We demonstrate, by theory and experiment, the ultrafast tilting of the dispersion curve of a photonic-crystal waveguide following the absorption of a femtosecond pump pulse. By shaping the pump-beam cross section with a nanometric shadow mask, different waveguide eigenmodes acquire different spatial overlap with the perturbing pump, leading to a local flattening of the dispersion by up to 11 %. We find that such partial mode perturbation can be used to adiabatically compress the spectrum of a light pulse traveling through the waveguide.
We present waveguides with photonic crystal cores, supporting energy propagation in subwavelength regions with a mode structure similar to that in telecom fibers. We design meta-materials for near-, mid-, and far-IR frequencies, and demonstrate efficient energy transfer to and from regions smaller than 1/25-th of the wavelength. Both positive- and negative-refractive index light transmissions are shown. Our approach, although demonstrated here in circular waveguides for some specific frequencies, is easily scalable from optical to IR to THz frequency ranges, and can be realized in a variety of…
We demonstrate the electromagnetic performance of waveguides for femtosecond electron beam bunch manipulation and compression with strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses. The compressor structure is a dispersion-free exponentially-tapered parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) that can focus single-cycle THz pulses along one dimension. We show test results of the tapered PPWG structure using electro-optic sampling (EOS) at the interaction region with peak fields of at least 300 kV/cm given 0.9 uJ of incoming THz energy. We also present a modified shorted design of the tapered PPWG for better beam manipu…
In the present work, we examine "binary" waveguide arrays, where the coupling between adjacent sites alternates between two distinct values $C_1$ and $C_2$ and a saturable nonlinearity is present on each site. Motivated by experimental investigations of this type of system in fabricated LiNbO$_3$ arrays, we proceed to analyze the nonlinear wave excitations arising in the self-defocusing nonlinear regime, examining, in particular, dark solitons and bubbles. We find that such solutions may, in fact, possess a reasonably wide, experimentally relevant parametric interval of stability, while they m…
A particular feature of an aperiodic design of cladding of Bragg reflection waveguides to demonstrate a dispersion blue-shift is elucidated. It is made on the basis of a comparative study of dispersion characteristics of both periodic and aperiodic configurations of Bragg mirrors in the waveguide system, wherein for the aperiodic configuration three procedures for layers alternating, namely Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Kolakoski substitutional rules are considered. It was found out that, in a Bragg reflection waveguide with any considered aperiodic cladding, dispersion curves of guided modes appe…

We investigate the nonlinear response of photonic crystal waveguides with suppressed two-photon absorption. A moderate decrease of the group velocity (~ c/6 to c/15, a factor of 2.5) results in a dramatic (30x) enhancement of three-photon absorption well beyond the expected scaling, proportional to 1/(vg)^3. This non-trivial scaling of the effective nonlinear coefficients results from pulse compression, which further enhances the optical field beyond that of purely slow-group velocity interactions. These observations are enabled in mm-long slow-light photonic crystal waveguides owing to the st…
We report on the generation of 6.1 mJ, 3.8 fs pulses by the compression of a kHz Ti:sapphire laser in a large-aperture long hollow fiber. In order to find optimal conditions for spectral broadening at high pulse energies, we explore different parameter ranges where ionization or the Kerr effect dominates. After identifying the optimum parameter settings, large spectral broadening at high waveguide transmission is obtained. The intense 1.5-cycle pulses are used for high-harmonic generation in argon and neon.
When an ultrafast optical pulse with high intensity is propagating through transparent material a supercontinuum can be coherently generated by self-phase modulation, which is essential to many photonic applications in fibers and integrated waveguides. However, the presence of dispersion causes stagnation of spectral broadening past a certain propagation length, requiring an increased input peak power for further broadening. We present a concept to drive supercontinuum generation with significantly lower input power by counteracting spectral stagnation via alternating the sign of group velocit…
We experimentally demonstrate that the bandwidth of single photons laser pulse is compressed by a factor of 58 in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide chip. A chirped single photons laser pulse and an oppositely chirped classical laser pulse are employed to produce a narrowband single photon pulse with new frequency through sum-frequency generation. In our experiment, the frequency and bandwidth of single photons at 1550 nm are simultaneously converted. Our results mark a critical step towards the realization of coherent photonic interface between quantum communication at 1550…

We assess the performance of on-chip diamond waveguides for controlling light generation by means of nonlinear soliton dynamics. Tailoring the cross-section of such diamond waveguides allows to design dispersion profiles with custom zero-dispersion points and anomalous dispersion ranges exceeding an octave. Various propagation dynamics, including supercontinuum generation by…

These nonlinear phenomenas were studied both numerically and experimentally with phase-resolved Frequency Resolved Optical Gating. Soliton pulse broadening, as well as pulse splitting from two-photon absorption, was observed experimentally, and the simulations matched all of the experimental results. Further simulations with the validated model have demonstrated that compression can be observed in centimeter-length waveguides. This study has demonstrated the feasibility of self-sustaining soliton pu…
