An optical pulse asymptotically reaching zero group velocity in tapered waveguides can ultimately stop at a certain position in the taper accompanied by a strong spatial compression. This phenomenon can be also observed in spatio-temporal systems where the pulse velocity asymptotically reaches the velocity of a tapered front. The first system is well known from tapered plasmonic waveguides where adiabatic nano-focusing of light is observed. Its counterpart in the spatio-temporal system is the optical push broom effect where a nonlinear front collects and compresses the signal. Here, we use the slowly-varying envelope approximation to describe such systems. We demonstrate an analytical solution for the linear taper and the piecewise linear dispersion and show that the solution in this case resembles that of an optical lens in paraxial approximation. In particular, the spatial distribution of the focused light represents the Fourier transform of the signal at the input.
We demonstrate that metamaterial devices requiring anisotropic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability may be emulated by specially designed tapered waveguides. This approach leads to low-loss, broadband performance. Based on this technique, we demonstrate broadband electromagnetic cloaking in the visible frequency range on a scale ~100 times larger than the wavelength.
We propose and theoretically verify an efficient mechanism of broadband coupling between incident light and on-chip dielectric slot waveguide by employing a tapered plasmonic nanoantenna. Nanoantenna receives free space radiation and couples it to a dielectric slot waveguide with the efficiency of up to 20% in a broad spectral range, having a small footprint as compared with the currently used narrowband dielectric grating couplers. We argue that the frequency selective properties of such nanoantennas also allow for using them as ultrasmall on-chip multiplexer/demultiplexer devices.
Tapered and dispersion managed (DM) silicon nanophotonic waveguides are investigated for the generation of optimal ultra broadband supercontinuum (SC). DM waveguides are structures showing a longitudinally dependent group velocity dispersion that results from the variation of the waveguide width with the propagation distance. In this article, I show how periodically-tapered waveguides can be employed as efficient quasi-phase-matching schemes for four-wave mixing parametric processes in third-order nonlinear materials. As an example, a thorough study of enhancing third-harmonic generation in sinusoidally-tapered fibres has been conducted. The quasi-phase-matching condition has been obtained for nonlinear parametric interactions in these structures using Fourier-series analysis. The dependencies of the conversion efficiency of the third harmonic on the modulation amplitude, tapering period, longitudinal-propagation d…
Whispering-gallery mode crystalline resonators currently maintain the best quality factor (Q) record, however, compact on-chip packaging is still a challenge although various coupling architectures have been developed. Here, a chemical etching method is proposed to fabricate a miniaturized tapered fiber waveguide on silicon substrate. Additionally, TEC is implanted in the package to actively customize the temp…
We demonstrate experimentally the resonant extinction of THz radiation by a single plasmonic bowtie antenna, formed by two n-doped Si monomers with a triangular shape and facing apexes. This demonstration is achieved by placing the antenna at the output aperture of a conically tapered waveguide, which enhances the intensity of the incident THz field at the antenna position by a factor 10. The waveguide also suppresses the background radiation that otherwise is transmitted without being scattered by the antenna. Bowtie antennas, supporting localized surface plasmon polaritons, are relevant due …
A nanofiber-based optical tweezer is demonstrated. Trapping is achieved by combining attractive near-field optical gradient forces with repulsive electrostatic forces. Silica-coated Fe$_2$O$_3$ nanospheres of 300 diameter are trapped as close as 50 nm away from the surface with 810 $μ$W of optical power, with a maximum trap stiffness of 2.7 pN $μ$m$^{-1}$. Electrostatic trapping forces up to 0.5 pN are achieved, a factor of 50 larger than those achievable for the same optical power in conventional optical tweezers. Efficient collection of the optical field directly into the nanofiber enables u…
We demonstrate adiabatically tapered fibers terminating in sub-micron tips that are clad with a higher-index material for coupling to an on-chip waveguide. This cladding enables coupling to a high-index waveguide without losing light to the buried oxide. A technique to clad the tip of the tapered fiber with a higher-index polymer is introduced. Conventional tapered waveguides and forked tapered waveguide structures are investigated for coupling from the clad fiber to the on-chip waveguide. We find the forked waveguide facilitates alignment and packaging, while the conventional taper leads to h…

We demonstrate a method to monolithically integrate nanowire-based quantum dot single photon sources on-chip using evanescent coupling. By deterministically placing an appropriately tapered III-V nanowire waveguide, containing a single quantum dot, on top of a silicon-based ridge waveguide, the quantum dot emission can be transferred to the ridge waveguide with calculated efficiencies close to 100%. As the evanescent coupling is bidirectional, the source can be optically pumped in both free-space and through the ridge waveguide. The latter onfiguration provides a self-contained, all-fiber, sin…
In this paper, we present a thorough investigation for a spontaneous parametric four-wave mixing process in third-order nonlinear waveguides with various continuous tapering patterns. It has been previously shown that these devices can quasi-phase-match the four-wave-mixing process and enhance its conversion efficiency by orders of magnitude. By altering the tapering profile curve we found that these devices can enable single-photon sources with either narrow or broadband spectral widths at on-demand frequencies. Using our model, we were also able to identify the waveguide length at which the …
Metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability (also called left-handed materials) open new avenues to achieving unprecedented physical properties and functionality unattainable with naturally occurring materials. It has been predicted that a metamaterial slab waveguide can slow down light significantly (even to zero velocity) as the thickness of the core layer approaches a critical thickness. Here we show that coupling between the forward and backward modes becomes significant near the critical thickness due to the good matching of the wavevectors and modal pr…
We propose to use the integrated aluminum nitride waveguide with engineered width variation to achieve optical frequency conversion based on $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear effect on a photonic chip. We show that in an adiabatically tapered waveguide, the frequency conversion has a much broader bandwidth and the efficiency within the bandwidth is almost constant, which is favorable for short pulses. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically an "area law" for the frequency conversion, i.e. the product of bandwidth and efficiency is conserved as long as peak conversion efficiency does not saturate. A lithium niobate on insulator ridge waveguide allows constructing high-density photonic integrated circuits thanks to its small bending radius offered by the high index contrast. Meanwhile, the significant mode-field mismatch between an optical fiber and the single-mode lithium niobate waveguide leads to low coupling efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate, both numerically and experimentally, that the problem can be solved with a tapered single mode fiber of an optimized mode field profile. Numerical simulation shows that the minimum coupling losses for the TE and TM mode are 0.32 dB and 0.86 dB,…
Configurational entropy (CE) consists of a family of entropic measures of information used to describe the shape complexity of spatially-localized functions with respect to a set of parameters. We obtain the Differential Configurational Entropy (DCE) for similariton waves traveling in tapered graded-index optical waveguides modeled by a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is found that for similariton's widths lying within a certain range, DCE attains minimum saturation values as the nonlinear wave evolves along the effective propagation variable $ζ(t)$. In particular, saturation is…
A waveguide structure consisting of a tapered nanofiber on a metal film is proposed and analyzed to support highly localized hybrid plasmonic modes. The hybrid plasmonic mode can be efficiently excited through the in-line tapered fiber based on adiabatic conversion and collected by the same fiber, which is very convenient in the experiment. Due to the ultrasmall mode area of plasmonic mode, the local electromagnetic field is greatly enhanced in this movable waveguide, which is potential for enhanced coherence light emitter interactions, such as waveguide quantum electrodynamics, single emitter…
By restricting the spatial energy transmission of an electromagnetic wave, dielectric waveguides transmit light over long distances at sustained intensity. Waveguides have been used in the microwave and optical range to maintain strong signal intensities in connection with lasers, but guiding of intense short-wavelength radiation such as x-rays has proven more cumbersome. Here we investigate theoretically how tapered x-ray waveguides can focus and guide radiation from x-ray free electron lasers. Elliptical waveguides using a cladding material with high atomic number such as platinum can mainta…
Tapered silica fibers are often used to rapidly probe the optical properties of micro-resonators. However, their low refractive index precludes phase-matching when coupling to high-index micro-resonators, reducing efficiency. Here we demonstrate efficient optical coupling from tapered fibers to high-index micro-resonators by loading the fibers with an ancillary adiabatic waveguide-coupler fabricated via angled-etching. We demonstrate greatly enhanced coupling to a silicon multimode micro-resonator when compared to coupling via the bare fiber only. Signatures of resonator optical bistability ar…
The finite-difference time-domain method was employed to simulate light propagation in tapered near-field fiber probes with small metal aperture. By conducting large-volume simulations, including tapered metal-cladding waveguide and connected optical fiber waveguide, we illustrated the coupling between these guiding modes as well as the electric field distribution in the vicinity of the aperture. The high collection efficiency of a double-tapered probe was reproduced and was ascribed to the shortening of the cutoff region and the efficient coupling to the guiding mode of the optical fiber. The…
In this paper we suggest and theoretically study a tapered plasmonic nanostructure which connects the incident wave beam with a subwavelength spatial region where the field is locally enhanced in a broad frequency range or for different operation frequencies. This spatial region has a frequency stable location near the contour of the tapered structure. This results from a special waveguide mode which can also exist in the tapered structure. We foresee many possible applications for our structure from prospective near-field scanning optical microscopes to interconnects between conventional opti…
One of the most fascinating aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime is the Unruh effect. The direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature has remained an elusive challenge up to now. Gradient optical waveguides manipulating the dispersion of photons are assumed to realize the great acceleration of effective particles, leading to a high effective Unruh temperature. However, experimentally achieving this optical waveguide has not yet been reported. In this work, we exploit a tapered fiber to simulate the accelerated motion of effective particles and obtain an effective Unruh temperat…
We demonstrate a silicon nitride trench waveguide deposited with bowtie antennas for plasmonic enhanced optical trapping. The sub-micron silicon nitride trench waveguides were fabricated with conventional optical lithography in a low cost manner. The waveguides embrace not only low propagation loss and high nonlinearity, but also the inborn merits of combining micro-fluidic channel and waveguide together. Analyte contained in the trapezoidal trench channel can interact with the evanescent field from the waveguide beneath. The evanescent field can be further enhanced by plasmonic nanostructures…
A discrete analogue of the dynamical (Kapitza) trapping effect, known for classical and quantum particles in rapidly oscillating potentials, is proposed for light waves in modulated graded-index waveguide lattices. As in the non-modulated waveguide lattice a graded-index potential can confine light at either normal or Bragg angle incidence, periodic modulation of the potential in the longitudinal direction enables to trap optical beams at both normal and Bragg incidence angles.
We demonstrate the electromagnetic performance of waveguides for femtosecond electron beam bunch manipulation and compression with strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses. The compressor structure is a dispersion-free exponentially-tapered parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) that can focus single-cycle THz pulses along one dimension. We show test results of the tapered PPWG structure using electro-optic sampling (EOS) at the interaction region with peak fields of at least 300 kV/cm given 0.9 uJ of incoming THz energy. We also present a modified shorted design of the tapered PPWG for better beam manipu…
Slow or even stop electromagnetic (EM) waves attract researchers' attentions for its potential applications in energy storage, optical buffer and nonlinearity enhancement. However, in most cases of the EM waves trapping, the EM waves are not truly trapped due to the existence of reflection. In this paper, a novel metal-semiconductor-semiconductor-metal (MSSM) structure, and a novel truly rainbow trapping in a tapered MSSM model at terahertz frequencies are demonstrated by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. More importantly, functional devices such as optical buffer, optical switch…
Tuning the near-field using all-dielectric nano-antennae offers a promising approach for trapping atoms, which could enable strong single-atom/photon coupling. Here we report the simulation results of an optical trapping concept, in which a silicon nano-antenna produces a trapping potential for atoms in a chip-scale configuration. Using counter-propagating incident fields, bichromatically detuned from the atomic cesium D-lines, we numerically investigate the dependence of the optical potential on the nano-antenna geometry. We tailor the near-field potential landscape by tuning the evanescent f…
We report on the experimental demonstration of the broadband "trapped rainbow" in the visible range using arrays of adiabatically tapered optical nano waveguides. Being a distinct case of the slow light phenomenon, the trapped rainbow effect could be applied to optical signal processing, and sensing in such applications as spectroscopy on a chip, and to providing enhanced light-matter interactions. As an example of the latter applications, we have fabricated a large area array of tapered nano-waveguides, which exhibit broadband "trapped rainbow" effect. Considerable fluorescence enhancement du…
We introduce continuous supersymmetric transformations to manipulate the modal content in systems of optical waveguides, providing a systematic method to design efficient and robust integrated devices such as tapered waveguides, single-waveguide mode filters, beam splitters and interferometers. These transformations connect superpartner profiles by smoothly modifying the transverse index profile along the propagation direction and, if the modification is performed adiabatically, the transverse electric modes evolve adapting their shape and propagation constant without being coupled to other gu…
Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic …
Compact chip-scale comb sources are of significant interest for many practical applications. Here, we experimentally study the generation of supercontinuum (SC) in an axially varying integrated waveguide. We show that the local tuning of the dispersion enables the continuous blue shift of dispersive waves thanks to their trapping by the strongly compressed pump pulse. This mechanism provides new insight into supercontinuum generation in a dispersion varying integrated waveguide. Pumped close to 2.2 $μ$m in the femtosecond regime and at a pulse energy of $\sim$ 4 pJ, the output spectrum extends…
The subwavelength focusing based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) has been widely explored in tapered metallic structures. However, the efficiency of energy localization is relatively weak, largely due to high propagation loss and strong back reflection. Here, we propose a straight-tapered 3-dimensional (3D) one-way surface magnetoplasmon (SMP) waveguide with the ending surface of $\sim 10^{-4}λ_0 \times 10^{-4}λ_0$ to achieve energy focusing in the microwave regime. Due to low propagation loss of SMP, we achieve huge magnetic field enhancement in such an ultra-subwavelength area, by five o…
We study the energy propagation in subwavelength waveguides and demonstrate that the mechanism of material gain, previously suggested for loss compensation, is also a powerful tool to manipulate dispersion and propagation characteristics of electromagnetic pulses at the nanoscale. We show theoretically that the group velocity in lossy nano-waveguides can be controlled from slow to superluminal values by the material gain and waveguide geometry and develop an analytical description of the relevant physics. We utilize the developed formalism to show that gain-assisted dispersion management can b…
We predict a sharp crossover from nonlinear self-defocusing to discrete self-trapping of a narrow Gaussian beam with the increase of the refractive index contrast in a periodic photonic lattice. We demonstrate experimentally nonlinear discrete localization of light with defocusing nonlinearity by single site excitation in LiNbO$_3$ waveguide arrays.
We overview our recent results on the nonlinear localized modes in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals and photonic-crystal waveguides. Employing the technique based on the Green function, we describe the existence domains for nonlinear guided modes in photonic crystal waveguides and study their unique properties including bistability. We also show that low-amplitude nonlinear modes near the band edge of a reduced-symmetry 2D square-lattice photonic crystals, which are usually unstable, can be stabilized due to effective long-range linear and nonlinear interactions.
An efficient and compact coupler - a device that matches a micro-waveguide and a nano-waveguide - is an essential component for practical applications of nanophotonic systems. The number of coupling approaches has been rapidly increasing in the past ten years with the help of plasmonic structures and metamaterials. In this paper we overview recent as well as common solutions for nanocoupling. More specifically we consider the physical principles of operation of the devices based on a tapered waveguide section, a direct coupler, a lens and a scatterer and support them with a number of examples.
Slow light and rainbow trapping attract many attentions in last twenty years, and in most of the previous works, the researchers achieve the slow light and rainbow trapping with complicate configurations or techniques, for example, metamaterial techniques. In this paper, we propose a simple waveguide consisted with semiconductor and dielectric layers, and we find that the slow-light peaks appear in the dispersion curves. Besides, the cutoff frequency with $v_g = 0$ ($v_g$ is the group velocity) in the slow-light peaks is depending on the thicknesses of the semiconductor and dielectric. Then, w…
We show, via simulations, that an optical fiber taper waveguide can be an efficient tool for photoluminescence and resonant, extinction spectroscopy of single emitters, such as molecules or colloidal quantum dots, deposited on the surface of a thin dielectric membrane. Placed over a high refractive index membrane, a tapered fiber waveguide induces the formation of hybrid mode waves, akin to dielectric slotted waveguide modes, that provide strong field confinement in the low index gap region. The availability of such gap-confined waves yields potentially high spontaneous emission enhancement fa…
Considering the coherent nonlinear dynamics between two weakly linked optical waveguide arrays, we find the first example of coexistence of Josephson oscillations with a novel self-trapping regime. This macroscopic bistability is explained by proving analytically the simultaneous existence of symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric stationary solutions of the associated Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The effect is, moreover, illustrated and confirmed by numerical simulations. This property allows to conceive an optical switch based on the variation of the refractive index of the linking central wa…
We present a comprehensive study of dispersion-engineered nanowire photonic crystal waveguides suitable for experiments in quantum optics and atomic physics with optically trapped atoms. Detailed design methodology and specifications are provided, as are the processing steps used to create silicon nitride waveguides of low optical loss in the near-IR. Measurements of the waveguide optical properties and power-handling capability are also presented.
We present a study of the highly nonlinear optical excitation of noble gases in tapered hollow waveguides using few-femtosecond laser pulses. The local plasmonic field enhancement induces the generation of a nanometric plasma, resulting in incoherent extreme-ultraviolet fluorescence from optical transitions of neutral and ionized xenon, argon, and neon. Despite sufficient intensity in the waveguide, high-order harmonic generation is not observed. The fluorescent emission exhibits a strong bistability manifest as an intensity hysteresis, giving strong indications for multistep collisional excit…
We report on an integrated GaAs disk/waveguide system. A millimeter-long waveguide is suspended and tapered on the chip over a length of 25 μm to evanescently couple to high Q optical whispering gallery modes of a GaAs disk. The critical coupling regime is obtained both by varying the disk/guide gap distance and the width of the suspended nanoscale taper. The experimental results are in good agreement with predictions from the coupled mode theory.
Here we report the first experimental demonstration of light trapping by a refractive index front in a silicon waveguide, the optical push broom effect. The front generated by a fast pump pulse collects and traps the energy of a CW signal with smaller group velocity and tuned near to the band gap of the Bragg grating introduced in the waveguide. This situation represents an optical analogue of light trapping in a tapered plasmonic waveguide where light is stopped without reflection. The energy of the CW signal is accumulated inside the front and distributed in frequency. In this experiment a 2…
A wavelength-tunable Optical Fiber Tweezer (OFT) based on a Graded Index Multimode Fiber (GIMF) with a flat endface is proposed. It is shown that the design can support a trapping position which is far from the tip of the GIMF compared with other common optical tweezing methods, hence reducing the possibility of a contact between the trapped particle and the fiber tip. Moreover, because of the wavelength dependence of the GIMF design parameters such the Numerical Aperture (NA), the trapping position can become wavelength-dependent. Therefore, the trapping position can be tuned over a long rang…
We describe a compact waveguide amplifier system that is suitable for optically pumping rubidium magnetometers. The system consists of an auto-locking vacuum-sealed external cavity diode laser, a semiconductor tapered amplifier and a pulsing unit based on an acousto-optic modulator. The diode laser utilises optical feedback from an interference filter to narrow the linewidth of an inexpensive laser diode to ~500 kHz. This output is scannable over an 8 GHz range (at 780 nm) and can be locked without human intervention to any spectral marker in an expandable library of reference spectra, using t…
We enhanced the total transmission of light through a disordered waveguide with spatially inhomogeneous scattering and loss by shaping the incident wavefront of a laser beam. Using an on-chip tapered lead, we were able to access all input modes in the waveguide with a spatial light modulator. The adaptive wavefront shaping resulted in selective coupling of input light to high transmission channels, which bypassed the regions of higher scattering and loss in the waveguide. The spatial inhomogeneity of scattering and loss led to redirecting of energy flux to optical paths with less scattering an…
We suggest a method for trapping photons in quasi one-dimensional waveguide or coupled-resonator lattices, which is based on an optical analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm cages for charged particles. Light trapping results from a destructive interference of Aharonov-Bohm type induced by a synthetic magnetic field, which is realized by periodic modulation of the waveguide/resonator propagation constants/resonances.
We propose a feedback-assisted direct laser writing method to perform laser ablation of fiber optics devices in which their light-collection signal is used to optimize their properties. A femtosecond-pulsed laser beam is used to ablate a metal coating deposited around a tapered optical fiber, employed to show the suitability of the approach to pattern devices with small radius of curvature. During processing, the same pulses generate two-photon fluorescence in the surrounding environment and the signal is monitored to identify different patterning regimes over time through spectral analysis. T…
We use an optical fiber taper waveguide to probe PbS quantum dots (QDs) dried on Si photonic crystal cavities near 1.55 $μ$m. We demonstrate that a low density ($\lesssim 100 μ$m$^{-2}$) of QDs does not significantly degrade cavity quality factors as high as $\approx3\times10^4$. We also show that the tapered fiber can be used to excite the QDs and collect the subsequent cavity-filtered photoluminescence, and present measurements of reversible photodarkening and QD saturation. This method represents an important step towards spectroscopy of single colloidal QDs in the telecommunications band.
We investigate trapping geometries for cold, neutral atoms that can be created in the evanescent field of a tapered optical fibre by combining the fundamental mode with one of the next lowest possible modes, namely the HE21 mode. Counter propagating red-detuned HE21 modes are combined with a blue-detuned HE11 fundamental mode to form a potential in the shape of four intertwined spirals. By changing the polar- ization from circular to linear in each of the two counter-propagating HE21 modes simultaneously the 4-helix configuration can be transformed into a lattice configuration. The modificatio…
