In this paper, we study the precise asymptotics of noncompact Type-IIb solutions to the mean curvature flow. Precisely, for each real number $γ>0$, we construct mean curvature flow solutions, in the rotationally symmetric class, with the following precise asymptotics as $t\nearrow\infty$: (1) The highest curvature concentrates at the tip of the hypersurface (an umbilical point) and blows up at the Type-IIb rate $(2t+1)^{(γ-1)/2}$. (2) In a neighbourhood of the tip, the Type-IIb blow-up of the solution converges to a translating soliton known as the bowl soliton. (3) Near spatial infinity, the hypersurface has a precise growth rate depending on $γ$.
In this paper we study the Type IIb mean curvature flow. We first prove that if the convex entire graph $(y,u(|y|))$ over $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, satisfying there exist positive constants $ε$, $c$ and $N$ such that $ u'(r)\geq c r^ε $ for $r\geq N$, the longtime solution to mean curvature flow with initial data $(y,u(|y|))$ must be Type IIb. We also study the asymptotic behavior of Type IIb mean curvature flow and show that the limit of suitable rescaling sequence for mean-convex Type IIb mean curvature flow satisfying $δ$-Andrews' noncollapsing condition is translating soliton.
In this note we prove the backwards uniqueness of the mean curvature flow for (codimension one) hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space. More precisely, let $F_t, \widetilde{F}_t:M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be two complete solutions of the mean curvature flow on $M^n \times [0,T]$ with bounded second fundamental forms. Suppose $F_T=\widetilde{F}_T$, then $F_t=\widetilde{F}_t$ on $M^n \times [0,T]$. This is an analog of a result of Kotschwar on the Ricci flow.
We continue the study, initiated by the first two authors in \cite{IW19}, of Type-II curvature blow-up in mean curvature flow of complete noncompact embedded hypersurfaces. In particular, we construct mean curvature flow solutions, in the rotationally symmetric class, with the following precise asymptotics near the "vanishing" time $T$: (1) The highest curvature concentrates at the tip of the hypersurface (an umbilical point) and blows up at the rate $(T-t)^{-1}$. (2) In a neighbourhood of the tip, the solution converges to a translating soliton known as the bowl soliton. (3) Near spatial infi…
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
A submanifold in space forms is isoparametric if the normal bundle is flat and principal curvatures along any parallel normal fields are constant. We study the mean curvature flow with initial data an isoparametric submanifold in Euclidean space and sphere. We show that the mean curvature flow preserves the isoparametric condition, develops singularities in finite time, and converges in finite time to a smooth submanifold of lower dimension. We also give a precise description of the collapsing.
Using the flow method, we prove some existence results for the problem of prescribing the mean curvature on the unit ball. More precisely, we prove that there exists a conformal metric on the unit ball such that its mean curvature is $f$, when $f$ possesses certain reflection or rotation symmetry.
We study translating soliton solutions to the flow by powers of the curvature of curves in the plane. We characterize these solitons as critical curves for functionals depending on the curvature. More precisely, translating solitons to the flow by powers of the curvature are shown to be generalized elastic curves. In particular, focusing on the curve shortening flow, we deduce a new variational characterization of the grim reaper curve.
In this note we study a positivity notion for the curvature of the Bismut connection; more precisely, we study the notion of \emph{Bismut-Griffiths-positivity} for complex Hermitian non-Kähler manifolds. Since the Kähler-Ricci flow preserves and regularizes the usual Griffiths positivity we investigate the behaviour of the Bismut-Griffiths-positivity under the action of the Hermitian curvature flows. In particular we study two concrete classes of examples, namely, linear Hopf manifolds and six-dimensional Calabi-Yau solvmanifolds with holomorphically-trivial canonical bundle. From these exampl…
We prove that, for a generic set of smooth prescription functions $h$ on a closed ambient manifold, there always exists a nontrivial, smooth, closed hypersurface of prescribed mean curvature $h$. The solution is either an embedded minimal hypersurface with integer multiplicity, or a non-minimal almost embedded hypersurface of multiplicity one. More precisely, we show that our previous min-max theory, developed for constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, can be extended to construct min-max prescribed mean curvature hypersurfaces for certain classes of prescription function, including smooth Mor…
