Two-dimensional materials can be strongly influenced by their surroundings. A dielectric environment screens and reduces the Coulomb interaction between electrons in the two-dimensional material. Since in Mott materials the Coulomb interaction is responsible for the insulating state, manipulating the dielectric screening provides direct control over Mottness. Our many-body calculations reveal the spectroscopic fingerprints of such Coulomb engineering: we demonstrate eV-scale changes to the position of the Hubbard bands and show a Coulomb engineered insulator-to-metal transition. Based on our proof-of-principle calculations, we discuss the (feasible) conditions under which our scenario of Coulomb engineering of Mott materials can be realized experimentally.
We reconsider the Mott transition problem in the presence of long range Coulomb interactions. Using an extended DMFT, that sums an important class of diagrams absent in ordinary DMFT, we show that in the presence of Coulomb the Mott transition in two and three dimensions is discontinuous as envisioned by Mott.
Electrons in artificial lattices enable explorations of the impact of repulsive Coulomb interactions in a tunable system. We have trapped two-dimensional electrons belonging to a gallium arsenide quantum well in a nanofabricated lattice with honeycomb geometry. We probe the excitation spectrum in a magnetic field identifying novel collective modes that emerge from the Coulomb interaction in the artificial lattice as predicted by the Mott-Hubbard model. These observations allow us to determine the Hubbard gap and suggest the existence of a novel Coulomb-driven ground state. This approach offers…
Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the full phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model of hard-core bosons on the pyrochlore lattice with partial fillings. When the intersite repulsion is dominant, the system is in a cluster Mott insulator phase with an integer number of bosons localized inside the tetrahedral units of the pyrochlore lattice. We show that the full phase diagram contains three cluster Mott insulator phases with 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 boson fillings, respectively. We further demonstrate that all three cluster Mott insulators are Coulomb liquid phases an…
Mott insulators sometimes show dramatic changes in their electronic states after photoirradiation, as indicated by photoinduced Mott-insulator-to-metal transition. In the photoexcited states of Mott insulators, electron wavefunctions are more delocalized than in the ground state, and long-range Coulomb interactions play important roles in charge dynamics. However, their effects are difficult to discriminate experimentally. Here, we show that in a one-dimensional Mott insulator, bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene-difluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (ET-F2TCNQ), long-range Coulomb interactions s…
In the framework of mean field approach, we study topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions on a square lattice at half filling. We consider the combined effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit Rashba coupling. The ground state phase diagram is calculated as a function of the strength of the spin-orbit Rashba coupling and the Coulomb repulsion. The spin-orbit Rashba coupling leads to a distinct phase of matter, the topological semimetal. We study a new type of phase transition between the non-topological insulator and topological semimetal states. …
We provide analytical and numerical solution of the two band fermion model with on-site Coulomb at half filling. In limiting cases for generate bands and one flat band, the model reduces to the Hubbard and Falicov-Kimball models, respectively. We have shown that the insulator state emerges at half filling due to hybridization of fermions of different bands with momenta k and k$+π$. Such hybridization breaks the conservation of the number of particles in each band, the Mott transition is a consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking. A gap in the spectrum is calculated depending on the magnitu…
We consider driving multi-orbital Mott insulators using laser radiation. We derive general expressions for periodically driven spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory in the strong interaction limit. We show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet spin-orbital Hamiltonian are highly tunable via variations of the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. We also take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heating effects. We further apply our formalism to orthorhombic titanates YTiO$_3$ and LaTiO$_3$ based on…
We propose a method for controlling the exchange interactions of Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. We consider a multiorbital system with strong spin-orbit coupling and a circularly polarized light field and derive its effective Hamiltonian in the strong-interaction limit. Applying this theory to a minimal model of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, we show that the magnitudes and signs of three exchange interactions, $J$, $K$, and $Γ$, can be changed simultaneously. Then, considering another case in which one of the hopping integrals has a different value and the other parameters are the same as …
Strong correlation effects, such as a dramatic increase in the effective mass of the carriers of electricity, recently observed in the low density electron gas have provided spectacular support for the existence of a sharp metal-insulator transitions in dilute two dimensional electron gases. Here we show that strong correlations, normally expected only for narrow integer filled bands, can be effectively enhanced even far away from integer filling, due to incipient charge ordering driven by non-local Coulomb interactions. This general mechanism is illustrated by solving an extended Hubbard mode…
Motivated by the unveiled complexity of nonmagnetic insulating behavior in pentavalent post-perovskite NaIrO$_3$, we have studied its electronic structure and phase diagram in the plane of Coulomb repulsive interaction and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) by using the newly developed local density approximation plus Gutzwiller method. Our theoretical study proposes the metal-insulator transition can be generated by two different physical pictures: renormalized band insulator or Mott insulator regime. For the realistic material parameters in NaIrO$_3$, Coulomb interaction $U=2.0 (J=U/4)$ eV and SOC st…
We investigate effects of Coulomb interaction and hopping transport in the insulator phase of granular metals and quantum dot arrays. We consider a spatially periodic as well as an irregular array, including disorder in a form of a random on-site electrostatic potential. We study the Mott transition between the insulating and metallic states in the regular system and find the dependence of the Mott gap upon the intergranular coupling. The conductivity of a strictly periodic array has an activation form with the Mott gap as an activation energy. Considering irregular systems we concentrate on t…
Metal insulator transitions driven by local Coulomb interactions are among the most fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics. They occur in a large variety of transition metal compounds. Most of these strongly correlated materials consist of valence bands derived from electronic d shells where intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions are equally important and where the crystal structure splits the valence bands into narrow and wide subbands. A fundamental question is whether these systems exhibit a common Mott transition, implying all subbands to be either metallic or insulating,…
We introduce the notion of superstructure Mottness to describe the Mott and Wigner-Mott transition in doped strongly correlated electron systems at commensurate filling fractions away from one electron per site. We show that superstructure Mottness emerges in an inhomogeneous electron system when the superstructure contains an odd number of electrons per supercell. We argue that superstructure Mottness exists even in the absence of translation symmetry breaking by a superlattice, provided that the extended or intersite Coulomb interaction is strong. In the latter case, superstructure Mottness …
The influence of short-range Coulomb correlations on the Mott transition in the single-band Hubbard model at half-filling is studied within cellular dynamical mean field theory for square and triangular lattices. Finite-temperature exact diagonalization is used to investigate correlations within two-, three-, and four-site clusters. Transforming the non-local self-energy from a site basis to a molecular orbital basis, we focus on the inter-orbital charge transfer between these cluster molecular orbitals in the vicinity of the Mott transition. In all cases studied, the charge transfer is found …
Applying the canonical transformation with the 1/λperturbation expansion in the nonadiabatic and intermediate regime and the discrete generalisation of Pekar's continuous nonlinear equation in the extreme adiabatic regime we show that there are no strings in narrow-band ionic insulators due to the Frohlich electron-phonon interaction alone. The multi-polaron system is a homogeneous state in a wide range of physically interesting parameters, no matter how strong correlations are. At the same time the Frohlich interaction allows the antiferromagnetic interactions and/or a short-range electron-ph…
We study antiferromagnetism and single-particle properties in the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model at low temperature. Collective spin fluctuations are governed by a non-linear sigma model that we derive from the Hubbard model for any value of the Coulomb repulsion. As the Coulomb repulsion increases, the ground state progressively evolves from a Slater to a Mott-Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At finite temperature, we find a metal-insulator transition between a pseudogap phase at weak coupling and a Mott-Hubbard insulator at strong coupling.
Quantum spin-orbital liquids are elusive strongly correlated states of matter that emerge from quantum frustration between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. A promising route towards the observation of those states is the creation of artificial Mott insulators where antiferromagnetic correlations between spins and orbitals can be designed. We show that Coulomb impurity lattices on the surface of gapped honeycomb substrates, such as graphene on SiC, can be used to simulate SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital lattice models. We exploit the property that massive Dirac fermions form mid-gap bound stat…
The effect of disorder on the electronic properties near the Mott transition is studied in an organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br, which is systematically irradiated by X-ray. We observe that X-ray irradiation causes Anderson-type electron localization due to molecular disorder. The resistivity at low temperatures demonstrates variable range hopping conduction with Coulomb interaction. The experimental results show clearly that the electron localization by disorder is enhanced by the Coulomb interaction near the Mott transition.

Using spin-assisted ab-initio random structure searches, we explore an exhaustive quantum phase diagram of archetypal interfaced Mott insulators, i.e. lanthanum-iron and lanthanum-titanium oxides. In particular, we report that the charge transfer induced by the interfacial electronic reconstruction stabilises a high spin ferrous Fe2+ state. We provide a pathway to control the strength of correlation in this electronic state by tuning the epitaxial strain, yielding a manifold of quantum electronic phases, i.e. Mott-Hubbard, charge transfer and Slater insulating states. Furthermore we report tha…
We study roles of electron correlations on topological insulators on the honeycomb lattice with the spin-orbit interaction. Accurate variational Monte Carlo calculations show that the increasing on-site Coulomb interactions cause a strong suppression of the charge Drude weight in the helical-edge metallic states leading to a presumable Mott transition from a conventional topological insulator to an edge Mott insulator before a transition to a bulk antiferromagnetic insulator. The intermediate bulk-topological and edge-Mott-insulator phase has a helical spin-liquid character with the protected …
Mott state in 1T-TaS2 is predicted to host quantum spin liquids (QSL). However, its insulating mechanism is controversial due to complications from interlayer coupling. Here, we study the Mott state in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, an electronic analogy to TaS2 exempt from interlayer coupling, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy and first principles calculations. Monolayer NbSe2 surprisingly displays two types of Star-of-David (SD) motifs with different Mott gap sizes, that are interconvertible via temperature variation. And, bilayer 1T-NbSe2 shows Mott collapse by interlayer coupl…
We theoretically investigate pump-probe optical responses in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model describing cuprates by using a time-dependent Lanczos method. At half filling, pumping generates photoinduced absorptions inside the Mott gap. A part of low-energy absorptions is attributed to the independent propagation of photoinduced holons and doublons. The spectral weight just below the Mott gap increases with decreasing the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We find that the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V_1$ enhances this $U$ dependence, indicating the presence of biexciton…
A new concept is proposed for the paramagnetic metal insulator transition in the layer perovskite Ca_{2-x}Sr_xRuO_4. Whereas the pure Sr compound is metallic up to very large Coulomb energies due to strong orbital fluctuations, structural changes induced by doping with Ca give rise to a interorbital charge transfer which makes the material extremely sensitive to local correlations. Using dynamical mean field theory based on finite temperature multi-band exact diagonalization it is shown that the combination of crystal field splitting and onsite Coulomb interactions leads to complete filling of…
In a certain regime of low carrier densities and strong correlations, electrons can crystallize into a periodic arrangement of charge known as Wigner crystal. Such phases are particularly interesting in one dimension (1D) as they display a variety of charge and spin ground states which may be harnessed in quantum devices as high-fidelity transmitters of spin information. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the strong Coulomb interactions in Mott insulators and other flat band systems, may provide an attractive higher temperature platform for Wigner crystallization, but due to materials and…

We present our theoretical results on an effective two-band double-exchange model on a pyrochlore lattice for understanding intricate phase competition in Mo pyrochlore oxides. The model includes the twofold degeneracy of $e_g'$ orbitals under trigonal field splitting, the interorbital Coulomb repulsion, the Hund's-rule coupling between itinerant $e_g'$ electrons and localized $a_{1g}$ spins, and the superexchange antiferromagnetic interaction between the $a_{1g}$ spins. By Monte Carlo simulation with treating the Coulomb repulsion at an unrestricted-type mean-field level, we obtain the low-te…
Calculations employing the local density approximation combined with static and dynamical mean-field theories (LDA+U and LDA+DMFT) indicate that the metal-insulator transition observed at 32 GPa in paramagnetic LaMnO3 at room temperature is not a Mott-Hubbard transition, but is caused by orbital splitting of the majority-spin eg bands. For LaMnO3 to be insulating at pressures below 32 GPa, both on-site Coulomb repulsion and Jahn-Teller distortion are needed.
We have investigated electronic structures and magnetic properties of O$_{2}$$M$F$_{6}$ ($M$=Sb, Pt), which are composed of two building blocks of strongly correlated electrons: O$_{2}^{+}$ dioxygenyls and $M$F$_{6}^{-}$ octahedra, by employing the first-principles electronic structure band method. For O$_{2}$SbF$_{6}$, as a reference system of O$_{2}$PtF$_{6}$, we have shown that the Coulomb correlation of O(2$p$) electrons drives the Mott insulating state. For O$_{2}$PtF$_{6}$, we have demonstrated that the Mott insulating state is induced by the combined effects of the Coulomb correlation o…
We examine how the electron correlation affects the electron-phonon (EP) interaction in the linear optical absorption spectrum of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard-Holstein model. A density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation shows that the effect of the EP interaction on an exciton is enhanced by increasing the on-site Coulomb repulsion. This enhancement is in contrast to the effect of the EP interaction on the ground state where the Peierls instability is suppressed by the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The DMRG data with the EP interaction fit with absorption experiments in …
We employ dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) and field-theory methods to determine the frequency-dependent optical conductivity in one-dimensional extended, half-filled Hubbard models. The field-theory approach is applicable to the regime of `small' Mott gaps which is the most difficult to access by DDMRG. For very large Mott gaps the DDMRG recovers analytical results obtained previously by means of strong-coupling techniques. We focus on exciton formation at energies below the onset of the absorption continuum. As a consequence of spin-charge separation, these Mott-Hubbard…
The role of Coulomb correlations in the iron pnictide LaFeAsO is studied by generalizing exact diagonalization dynamical mean field theory to five orbitals. For rotationally invariant Hund's rule coupling a continuous transition from a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid phase to a non-Fermi-liquid metallic phase exhibiting frozen moments is found at moderate Coulomb energies. For Ising-like exchange, this transition is first order and occurs at a lower critical Coulomb energy. The correlation-induced scattering rate as a function of doping relative to half-filling, i.e., delta = n/5-1, where n=6 for th…
We study the interaction driven localization transition, which a recent experiment in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs As has shown to come along with multifractal behavior of the local density of states (LDoS) and the intriguing persistence of critical correlations close to the Fermi level. We show that the bulk of these phenomena can be understood within a Hartree-Fock treatment of disordered, Coulomb-interacting spinless fermions. A scaling analysis of the LDoS correlation demonstrates multifractality with correlation dimension d_2=1.57, which is significantly larger than at a non-interacting Anderson transi…
By means of $ab~initio$ computation schemes, we examine the low-energy electronic structure of monolayer TaS$_2$ in its low-temperature commensurate charge-density-wave structure. We estimate and take into account both local and non-local Coulomb correlations within cRPA (constrained random phase approximation) and GW+EDMFT (GW plus extended dynamical mean-field theory) method. Mott nature of its insulating phase is clearly identified. By increasing the level of nonlocal approximation from DMFT ($V=0$) to EDMFT and GW+EDMFT, a systematic change of charge screening effects is clearly observed w…
In strongly correlated electron systems the constraint which prohibits the double electron occupation at local sites can be realized by either the infinite Coulomb interaction or the correlated hopping interaction described by the Hubbard operators, but they both render the conventional field theory inapplicable. Relaxing such the constraint leads to a class of correlated hopping models based on the deformed Hubbard operators which smoothly interpolate the locally free and strong coupling limits by a tunable interaction parameter $0\leq λ\leq 1$. Here we propose a coherent state path integral …
We consider a series of Mott insulators in unit of two orbitals each hosting spin-1/2 electron, and by pairing two spin-1/2 into spin-1 triplet, derive the effective exchange interaction between the adjacent units via fourth order perturbation theory. It turns out that the biquadratic exchange interaction between spin-1, which is one of the origins of the nematic order, arises only in processes where the four different electrons exchange cyclically along the twisted loop, which we call "twisted ring exchange" processes. We show that the term becomes the same order with the Heisenberg exchange …
To examine the insulating mechanism of 5$d$ transition metal oxide Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we study the ground state properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with a large relativistic spin-orbit coupling on a square lattice. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find that the insulating state appearing in the ground state phase diagram for one hole per site varies from a weakly correlated to a strongly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) state with increasing Coulomb interactions. This crossover is characterized by the different energy gain mechanisms of the AF insulating state, i.e., from an int…
Two-dimensional (2D) atom lattices provide model setups for Coulomb correlations inducing competing ground states, partly with topological character. Hexagonal SiC(0001) is an intriguing wide-gap substrate, spectroscopically separated from the overlayer and hence reduced screening. We report the first study of an artificial high-Z atom lattice on SiC(0001) by Sn adatoms, based on combined experimental realization and theoretical modeling. Density-functional theory of our $\sqrt{3}$-structure model closely reproduces the scanning tunneling microscopy. Instead of metallic behavior, photoemission…
We investigate the Mott transitions in two-band Hubbard models with different bandwidths. Applying dynamical mean field theory, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. We demonstrate that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general, which merge to a single transition only under special conditions. This kind of behavior may be relevant for the physics of the single-layer ruthenates, Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$.
We study the electric and thermal transport of the Dirac carriers in monolayer graphene using the Boltzmann-equation approach. Motivated by recent thermopower measurements [F. Ghahari, H.-Y.~Xie, T. Taniguchi, K. Watanabe, M.~S.~Foster, and P.~Kim, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 116}, 136802 (2016)], we consider the effects of quenched disorder, Coulomb interactions, and electron--optical-phonon scattering. Via an unbiased numerical solution to the Boltzmann equation we calculate the electrical conductivity, thermopower, and electronic component of the thermal conductivity, and discuss the validity …
We investigate the Mott transitions in the two-orbital Hubbard model with different bandwidths. By combining dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. We demonstrate that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general, which merge to a single transition only under special conditions. In particular, it is clarified that the $xy$ and pair-hopping components of the Hund coupling play a key role to control the nature of the Mott transitions.
Gutzwiller variational method is applied to an effective two-dimensional Hubbard model to examine the recently proposed gossamer superconductor by Laughlin. The ground state at half filled electron density is a gossamer superconductor for smaller intra-site Coulomb repulsion U and a Mott insulator for larger U. The gossamer superconducting state is similar to the resonant valence bond superconducting state, except that the chemical potential is approximately pinned at the mid of the two Hubbard bands away from the half filled.
Based on first-principles calculations, we explored the interplay between stacking effect and electron-electron correlation in the layered vdW material of bulk 1T-NbS2 with a 2D charge density wave (CDW) order. Without considering the Coulomb correlation, two energetically favorable out-of-plane stacking configurations are identified: one is a metallic phase with a single-layer stacking pattern, another is a band insulator with a paired-bilayer stacking configuration. Even though the Coulomb correlation is taken into account, the two energetic favorable stacking orders are still far more stabl…
Ab initio calculations are used to predict that a superlattice composed of layers of LaTiO3 and LaNiO3 alternating along the [001] direction is a S=1 Mott insulator with large magnetic moments on the Ni sites, negligible moments on the Ti sites and a charge transfer gap set by the energy difference between Ni d and Ti d states, distinct from conventional Mott insulators. Correlation effects are enhanced on the Ni sites via filling the oxygen p states and reducing the Ni-O-Ni bond angle. Small hole (electron) doping of the superlattice leads to a two-dimensional single-band situation with holes…
We investigate the competition between charge-density-wave (CDW) states and a Coulomb interaction-driven topological Mott insulator (TMI) in the honeycomb extended Hubbard model. For the spinful model with on-site ($U$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($V_2$) Coulomb interactions at half filling, we find two peculiar six-sublattice charge-density-wave insulating states by using variational Monte Carlo simulations as well as the Hartree-Fock approximation. We observe that conventional ordered states always win with respect to the TMI. The ground state is given in the large-$V_2$ region by a CDW chara…
We investigate correlation physics in high-density, two-dimensional electron liquids that reside in narrow SrTiO3 quantum wells. The quantum wells are remotely doped via an interfacial polar discontinuity and the three-dimensional (3D) carrier density is modulated by changing the width of the quantum well. It is shown that even at 3D densities well below one electron per site, short-range Coulomb interactions become apparent in transport, and an insulating state emerges at a critical density. We also discuss the role of disorder in the insulating state.
Magnetic exchange couplings can be tuned by coupling to periodic light, where the frequency and amplitude are typically varied: a process known as Floquet engineering. The polarization of the light is also important, and in this paper, we show how different polarizations, including several types of unpolarized light, can tune the exchange couplings in distinct ways. Using unpolarized light, for example, it is possible to tune the material without breaking either time-reversal or any lattice symmetries. To illustrate these effects generically, we consider single-band Hubbard models at half-fill…
We theoretically study the competition among different electronic phases in molecular conductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X. The ground-state properties of a 3/4-filled extended Hubbard model with the $κ$-type geometry are investigated by a variational Monte Carlo method. We find various competing phases: dimer-Mott insulator, polar charge-ordered insulator, 3-fold charge-ordered metal, and superconductivity, whose pairing symmetry is an "extended-$s$+$d_{x^2-y^2}$"-wave type. Our results show that the superconducting phase is stabilized not on the verge of the Mott metal-insulator transition but nea…
We investigate the Mott transitions in two-orbital Hubbard systems. Applying the dynamical mean field theory and the self-energy functional approach, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. It is shown that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general. On the other hand, if some special conditions are satisfied for the interactions, spin and orbital fluctuations are equally enhanced at low temperatures, resulting in a single Mott transition. The phase diagrams are obtained at zero and finite temperatures. We also addres…
In correlated electron systems the metallic character of a material can be strongly suppressed near an integer concentration of conduction electrons as Coulomb interactions forbid the double occupancy of local atomic orbitals. While the Mott-Hubbard physics arising from such on-site interactions has been largely studied, several unexplained phenomena observed in correlated materials challenge this description and call for the development of new ideas. Here we explore a general route for obtaining correlated behavior that is decidedly different from the spin-related Mott-Hubbard mechanism and i…
The Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the ionic Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice at half filling were performed. The method based on the direct-space, proposed by Suzuki and al., Hirsch and al., was used. Cycles of increasing and decreasing values of the Coulomb interaction $ U $ were performed for fixed temperature ($ kT=0.01 $). Results indicate that, at low temperature, the two insulator phases are separated by a metallic phase for weak to intermediate values of the staggered potential $ Δ$. For large Coulomb repulsion the system is in a Mott insulator with an antiferromag…
A phase diagram of two Mott-Hubbard planes interacting with a short-range Coulomb repulsion is presented. Considering the case of equal amount of doping by holes in one layer as electrons in the other, a holon-doublon inter-layer exciton formation is shown to be a natural consequence of Coulomb attraction. Quasiparticle spectrum is gapped and incoherent below a critical doping $δ_c$ due to the formation of excitons. A spin liquid insulator (SLI) phase is thus realized without the lattice frustration. The critical value $δ_{c}$ sensitively depends on the inter-layer interaction strength. In the…
Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we compute the time evolution of the current in a Mott insulator after a strong electric field is turned on. We observe the formation of a quasistationary state in which the current is almost time-independent although the system is constantly excited. At moderately strong fields this state is stable for quite long times. The stationary current exhibits a threshold behavior as a function of the field, in which the threshold increases with the Coulomb interaction and vanishes as the metal-insulator transition is approached.
The quantum transport of electrons in an artificial atom, such as a quantum dot (QD), is governed by the Coulomb blockade (CB) effects, revealing the ground-state charge configuration of the electronic system under interplays of the on-site strong Coulomb interactions. In a coherently-coupled QD array, i.e. artificial molecules, the phenomenon of collective CB (CCB) was predicted by theoretical studies circa two decades ago but its evidence remains controversial. Here, we present direct evidence for the observation of CCB in a six-quantum-dot array (QDA) under high magnetic fields at 20 mK. Th…
The Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model in infinite dimensions is studied by using the linearized dynamical mean-field theory. The discontinuity in the chemical potential for the change from hole to electron doping is calculated analytically as a function of the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$, and the charge-transfer energy $Δ$ between the $d$- and $p$-orbitals, transfer integrals $t_{pd}$, $t_{pp}$, $t_{dd}$ between $p$-$d$, $p$-$p$ and $d$-$d$ sites respectively. The critical behaviour of the quasiparticle weight is also obtained analytically.
We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model with different hopping amplitudes $t_1$ and $t_2$ for the two orbitals on the two-dimensional square lattice by using {\it non-magnetic} variational wave functions, similarly to what has been considered in the limit of infinite dimensions by dynamical mean-field theory. We work out the phase diagram at half filling (i.e., two electrons per site) as a function of $R=t_2/t_1$ and the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$, for two values of the Hund's coupling $J=0$ and $J/U=0.1$. Our results are in good agreement with previous dy…
