A characterization of the quotients of $p$-class tower groups of quadratic fields by terms in the lower $p$-central series plays an important role in the formulation of conjectures by Boston, Hajir and the author about the distribution of such groups as the base field varies. In this paper, another equivalent criterion is given which resolves an issue that arose as part of the group-theoretical calculations carried out in relation to these conjectures.
In this article we show that the quotient of the Lubin-Tate space at infinite level by the Borel subgroup of upper triangular matrices in GL(2,Q_p) exists as a perfectoid space. As an application we show that Scholze's functor H^i_et(P^1,F(pi)) is concentrated in degree one whenever pi is a principal series representation or a twist of the Steinberg representation of GL(2,Q_p).
The $p$-group generation algorithm from computational group theory is used to obtain information about large quotients of the pro-2 group $G = \text{Gal} (k^{nr,2}/k)$ for $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with $d = -445, -1015, -1595, -2379$. In each case we are able to narrow the identity of $G$ down to one of a finite number of explicitly given finite groups. From this follow several results regarding the corresponding 2-class tower. This is a revised version of ANT-0302.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. For a number field $K$, we let $K_\infty$ be the maximal unramified pro-$p$ extension of $K$; we call the group $\mathrm{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$ the $p$-class tower group of $K$. In a previous work, as a non-abelian generalization of the work of Cohen and Lenstra on ideal class groups, we studied how likely it is that a given finite $p$-group occurs as the $p$-class tower group of an imaginary quadratic field. Here we do the same for an arbitrary real quadratic field $K$ as base. As before, the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q})$ on the $p$-class tower group of $K$ plays …
In this article we construct the quotient M_1/P(K) of the infinite-level Lubin-Tate space M_1 by the parabolic subgroup P(K) of GL(n,K) of block form (n-1,1) as a perfectoid space, generalizing results of one of the authors (JL) to arbitrary n and K/Q_p finite. For this we prove some perfectoidness results for certain Harris-Taylor Shimura varieties at infinite level. As an application of the quotient construction we show a vanishing theorem for Scholze's candidate for the mod p Jacquet-Langlands and the mod p local Langlands correspondence. An appendix by David Hansen gives a local proof of p…
We formulate and for the most part prove a conjecture in the style of Mazur-Greenberg for the nonvanishing of central values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions attached to elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields. This in particular generalizes the theorem of Rohrlich on $L$-functions of elliptic curves in cyclotomic towers to the setting of abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, corresponding to families of degree-four $L$-functions given by $\operatorname{GL}(2)\times\operatorname{GL}(2)$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions. It also generalizes the theorems of Roh…
The modern theory of class field towers has its origins in the study of the p-class field tower over a quadratic imaginary number field, so it is fitting that this problem be the first in the discipline to be nearing a solution. We survey the state of the subject and present a new cohomological condition for a quadratic imaginary number field to have an infinite p-class field tower (for p odd). Under an additional hypothesis, we refine this to a necessary and sufficient condition and describe an algorithm for evaluating this condition for a given quadratic imaginary number field.
We state and prove an identity which represents the most general eta-products of weight 1 by binary quadratic forms. We discuss the utility of binary quadratic forms in finding a multiplicative completion for certain eta-quotients. We then derive explicit formulas for the Fourier coefficients of certain eta-quotients of weight 1 and level 47, 71, 135,648 1024, and 1872.
The p-class tower $F_p^\infty(k)$ of a number field k is its maximal unramified pro-p extension. It is considered to be known when the p-tower group, that is the Galois group $G:=Gal(F_p^\infty(k)/k)$, can be identified by an explicit presentation. The main intention of this article is to characterize assigned finite 3-groups uniquely by abelian quotient invariants of subgroups of finite index, and to provide evidence of actual realizations of these groups by 3-tower groups G of real quadratic fields $K=Q(\sqrt{d})$ with 3-capitulation type (0122) or (2034).
Cohen and Lenstra have given a heuristic which, for a fixed odd prime $p$, leads to many interesting predictions about the distribution of $p$-class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. We extend the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic to a non-abelian setting by considering, for each imaginary quadratic field $K$, the Galois group of the $p$-class tower of $K$, i.e. $G_K:=\mathrm{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$ where $K_\infty$ is the maximal unramified $p$-extension of $K$. By class field theory, the maximal abelian quotient of $G_K$ is isomorphic to the $p$-class group of $K$. For integers $c\geq 1$, we give a heur…
Inspired by the Odlyzko root discriminant and Golod--Shafarevich $p$-group bounds, Martinet (1978) asked whether an imaginary quadratic number field $K/\mathbb{Q}$ must always have an infinite Hilbert $2$-class field tower when the class group of $K$ has $2$-rank $4$, or equivalently when the discriminant of $K$ has $5$ prime factors. No negative results are known. Benjamin (2001, 2002) and Sueyoshi (2004, 2009, 2010) systematically established infinite $2$-towers for many $K$ in question, by casework on the associated Rédei matrices. Others, notably Mouhib (2010), have also made progress, but…
We classify all complex quadratic number fields with 2-class group of type (2,2^m) whose Hilbert 2-class fields have class groups of 2-rank equal to 2. These fields all have 2-class field tower of length 2. We still don't know examples of fields with 2-class field tower of length 3, but the smallest candidate is the field with discriminant -1015.
Donnay, Garcia and Rouse classified nonsingular quadratic forms $Q$ with integral coefficients and prime numbers $p$ such that the set of quotients of values of $Q$ attained for integer arguments is dense in the field of $p$-adic numbers. The aim of this note is to give another proof of this classification.
It is shown that for some explicit constants $c>0, A>0$, the asymptotic for the number of positive non-square discriminants $D<x$ with fundamental solution $\varepsilon_D< x^{\frac 12+α}, 0<α<c$, remains preserved if we require moreover $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ to contain an irrational with partial quotients bounded by $A$.
By the construction of suitable non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of type (9,3) with log order lo(S) = 21 and nilpotency class cl(S) = 9, evidence is provided of a new class of imaginary quadratic fields K with 3-class group Cl(3,K) ~ C(9) * C(3) and punctured principalization type kappa ~ (1,4,4;4) whose 3-class field tower consists of precisely three stages. In contrast, previous examples of three-stage towers were associated with kappa in { (1,1,2;2), (1,1,2;3), (1,1,4;2), (1,2,3;1) }, lo(S) = 9 and cl(S) = 5.
In a handwritten manuscript published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated without proofs forty identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions. We observe that the functions that appear in Ramanujan's identities can be obtained from a Hecke action on a certain family of eta products. We establish further Hecke-type relations for these functions involving binary quadratic forms. Our observations enable us to find new identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions and also to use such identities in turn to find identities involving binary quadratic forms.
For $A \subseteq \{1,2,\ldots\}$, we consider $R(A) = \{a/a' : a,a' \in A\}$. If $A$ is the set of nonzero values assumed by a quadratic form, when is $R(A)$ dense in the $p$-adic numbers? We show that for a binary quadratic form $Q$, $R(A)$ is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ if and only if the discriminant of $Q$ is a nonzero square in $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$, and for a quadratic form in at least three variables, $R(A)$ is always dense in $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. This answers a question posed by several authors in 2017.
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
In this paper we investigate examples of good and optimal Drinfeld modular towers of function fields. Surprisingly, the optimality of these towers has not been investigated in full detail in the literature. We also give an algorithmic approach on how to obtain explicit defining equations for some of these towers and in particular give a new explicit example of an optimal tower over a quadratic finite field.
We generate ring class fields of imaginary quadratic fields in terms of the special values of certain eta-quotients, which are related to the relative norms of Siegel-Ramachandra invariants. These give us minimal polynomials with relatively small coefficients from which we are able to solve certain quadratic Diophantine equations concerning non-convenient numbers.
In this article we classify the complex quadratic number fields k with 2-class group of type (2,2,2) whose Hilbert 2-class fields have a 2-class group of rank 2, and then determine the length of their 2-class field towers.
We estimate the sum of products or quotients of $L$-functions, where the sum is taken over all quadratic extensions of given genus over a fixed global function field. Our estimate for the sum of the quotient of two $L$-functions is analogous to a result of Schmidt where he estimates the sum of the quotient of two $L$-series, where the sum is over quadratic extensions of $\bq$ with absolute value of the discriminant less than a given bound.
For each odd prime p>=5, there exist finite p-groups G with derived quotient G/D(G)=C(p)xC(p) and nearly constant transfer kernel type k(G)=(1,2,...,2) having two fixed points. It is proved that, for p=7, this type k(G) with the simplest possible case of logarithmic abelian quotient invariants t(G)=(11111,111,21,21,21,21,21,21) of the eight maximal subgroups is realized by exactly 98 non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of order 7^11 with fixed derived length dl(S)=3 and metabelianizations S/D(D(S)) of order 7^7. For p=5, the type k(G) with t(G)=(2111,111,21,21,21,21) leads to infinitely many n…
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
The $p$-group generation algorithm is used to verify that the Hilbert $3$-class field tower has length $3$ for certain imaginary quadratic fields $K$ with $3$-class group $\mathrm{Cl}_3(K) \cong [3,3]$. Our results provide the first examples of finite $p$-class towers of length $> 2$ for an odd prime $p$.
Recent examples of periodic bifurcations in descendant trees of finite p-groups with p in {2,3} are used to show that the possible p-class tower groups G of certain multiquadratic fields K with p-class group of type (2,2,2), resp. (3,3), form periodic sequences in the descendant tree of the elementary abelian root C(2)xC(2)xC(2), resp. C(3)xC(3). The particular vertex of the periodic sequence which occurs as the p-class tower group G of an assigned field K is determined uniquely by the p-class number of a quadratic, resp. cubic, auxiliary field k, associated unambiguously to K. Consequently, t…
Sect 1 introduces Nielsen classes attached to (G,C), where C is r conjugacy classes in a finite group G, and a braid action on them. These give reduced Hurwitz spaces, denoted H(G,C)^rd. The section concludes with a braid formula for the genus of these spaces when r = 4. If there is at least one prime l for which G is divisible by l, but has no Z/l quotient, then there is a canonical tower of reduced Hurwitz spaces over H(G,C)^rd, using the Universal Frattini cover, ~G, of G, and ~G_ab, its abelianized version. The towers are nonempty assuming C are l' classes satisfying a cohomological condit…
We prove a generalization of the Davenport-Heilbronn theorem to quotients of ideal class groups of quadratic fields by the primes lying above a fixed set of rational primes $S$. Additionally, we obtain average sizes for the relaxed Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}_3^S(K)$ and for $\mathcal{O}_{K,S}^\times/(\mathcal{O}_{K,S}^\times)^3$ as $K$ varies among quadratic fields with a fixed signature ordered by discriminant.
Elaborating on ideas of Elkies, we show how recursive equations for towers of Drinfeld modular curves $(X_0(P^n))_{n\ge 0}$ for $P\in \mathbb F_q[T]$ can be read of directly from the modular polynomial $Φ_P(X,Y)$ and how this naturally leads to recursions of depth two. Although the modular polynomial $Φ_T(X,Y)$ is not known in general, using generators and relations given by Schweizer, we find unreduced recursive equations over $\mathbb F_q(T)$ for the tower $(X_0(T^n))_{n\ge 2}$ and of a small variation of it (its partial Galois closure). Reducing at various primes, one obtains towers over fi…
In this paper we give an elementary proof of results on the structure of 4-class groups of real quadratic number fields originally due to A. Scholz. In a second (and independent) section we strengthen C. Maire's result that the 2-class field tower of a real quadratic number field is infinite if its ideal class group has 4-rank at least $4$, using a technique due to F. Hajir.
We prove an effective equidistribution theorem for orbits of horospherical subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(2, 2)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(3, 1)$ in quotients of $\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{R})$ with a polynomial error term. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this theorem to prove an effective version of the Oppenheim conjecture for indefinite quadratic forms of signature $(2, 2)$ or $(3, 1)$ with a polynomial error rate.
We determine the conditions under which singular values of multiple $η$-quotients of square-free level, not necessarily prime to~6, yield class invariants, that is, algebraic numbers in ring class fields of imaginary-quadratic number fields. We show that the singular values lie in subfields of the ring class fields of index $2^{k' - 1}$ when $k' \geq 2$ primes dividing the level are ramified in the imaginary-quadratic field, which leads to faster computations of elliptic curves with prescribed complex multiplication. The result is generalised to singular values of modular functions on $X_0^+ (…
V.I. Arnold has experimentally established that the limit of the statistics of incomplete quotients of partial continued fractions of quadratic irrationalities coincides with the Gauss--Kuz'min statistics. Below we briefly prove this fact for roots of the equation $r x^2+p x=q$ with fixed $p$ and $r$ ($r>0$), and with random $q$, $q\le R$, $R\to \infty$. In Section 3 we estimate the sum of incomplete quotients of the period. According to the obtained bound, prior to the passage to the limit, incomplete quotients in average are logarithmically small. We also upper estimate the proportion of the…
We give an asymptotic formula for the quadratic total variation of the sequence of fractional parts of the quotients of a positive real number by the consecutive natural numbers.
We show that every modular form on $Γ_0(2^n)$ ($n\geq2$) can be expressed as a sum of eta-quotients. Furthermore, we construct a primitive generator of the ring class field of the order of conductor $4N$ ($N\geq1$) in an imaginary quadratic field in view of the special value of certain eta-quotient.
With K=Q((3812377)^(1/2)) we give the first example of an algebraic number field possessing a 5-class tower of exact length L(5,K)=3. The rigorous proof is conducted by means of the p-group generation algorithm, showing the existence of a unique finite metabelian 5-group G with abelianization [5,5] having the kernels (M(1),G^5) and targets ([25,5,5,5],[5,5]^5) of Artin transfers T(i):G-->M(i)/M(i)' to its six maximal subgroups M(i), prescribed by arithmetical invariants of K. Thus, G must be the second 5-class group G(5,2,K) of the real quadratic field K but cannot be its 5-class tower group G…
We show by adopting Schertz's argument with the Siegel-Ramachandra invariant that singular values of certain quotients of the $Δ$-function generate ring class fields over imaginary quadratic fields.
The genus of projective curves discretely separates decidedly different two variable algebraic relations. So, we can focus on the connected moduli M_g of genus g curves. Yet, modern applications require a data variable (function) on such curves. The resulting spaces are versions, depending on our need from this data variable, of Hurwitz spaces. A Nielsen class is a set defined by r \ge 3 conjugacy classes C in the data variable monodromy G. It gives a striking genus analog. Using Frattini covers of G, every Nielsen class produces a projective system of related Nielsen classes for any prime p d…
For a fixed prime p, the p-class tower F(p,infinity,K) of a number field K is considered to be known if a pro-p presentation of the Galois group H = Gal( F(p,infinity,K)/K ) is given. In the last few years, it turned out that the Artin pattern AP(K) = (tau(K),kappa(K)) consisting of targets tau(K) = (Cl(p,L)) and kernels kappa(K) = (ker(J(L/K)) of class extensions J(L/K): Cl(p,K) --> Cl(p,L) to unramified abelian subfields L/K of the Hilbert p-class field F(p,1,K) only suffices for determining the two-stage approximation G = H/H" of H. Additional techniques had to be developed for identifying …
In this paper, we provide refined sufficient conditions for the quadratic Chabauty method to produce a finite set of points, with the conditions on the rank of the Jacobian replaced by conditions on the rank of a quotient of the Jacobian plus an associated space of Chow-Heegner points. We then apply this condition to prove the finiteness of this set for any modular curves $X_{\mathrm{ns} }^+ (N)$ and $X_0 ^+ (N)$ of genus at least 2 with N prime. The proof relies on the existence of a quotient of their Jacobians whose Mordell-Weil rank is equal to its dimension (and at least 2), which is prove…
Let p be a prime and K be a number field with non-trivial p-class group Cl(p,K). A crucial step in identifying the Galois group G=G(p,K) of the maximal unramified pro-p extension of K is to determine its two-stage approximation M=G(p,2,K), that is the second derived quotient M=G/G". The family tau(1,K) of abelian type invariants of the p-class groups Cl(p,L) of all unramified cyclic extensions L/K of degree p is called the index-p abelianization data (IPAD) of K. It is able to specify a finite batch of contestants for the second p-class group M of K. In this paper we introduce two different ki…
The isomorphism type of the Galois group of the 2-class field tower of quadratic number fields having a 2-class group with abelian type invariants (4,4) is determined by means of information on the transfer of 2-classes to unramified abelian 2-extensions, collected in the Artin pattern. In recent investigations by Benjamin and Snyder, the length of the tower of such fields has turned out to be dependent on the rank of the 2-class group of the first Hilbert 2-class field. Significant progress is achieved by extending the pool of possible metabelian 2-groups of the second Hilbert 2-class field f…
For any number field K with non-elementary 3-class group Cl(3,K) = C(3^e) x C(3), e >= 2, the punctured capitulation type kappa(K) of K in its unramified cyclic cubic extensions Li, 1 <= i <= 4, is an orbit under the action of S3 x S3. By means of Artin's reciprocity law, the arithmetical invariant kappa(K) is translated to the punctured transfer kernel type kappa(G2) of the automorphism group G2 = Gal(F(3,2,K)/K) of the second Hilbert 3-class field of K. A classification of finite 3-groups G with low order and bicyclic commutator quotient G/G' = C(3^e) x C(3), 2 <= e <= 6, according to the al…
