The Cherenkov Imaging Telescope Integrated Read Out Chip (CITIROC) is a 32-channel fully analogue front-end ASIC dedicated to the read-out of silicon photo-multiplier (SiPM) sensors that can be used in a variety of experiments with different applications: nuclear physics, medical imaging, astrophysics, etc. It has been adopted as front-end for the focal plane detectors of the ASTRI-Horn Cherenkov telescope and, in this context, it was modified implementing the peak detector reading mode to satisfy the instrument requirements. For each channel, two parallel AC coupled voltage preamplifiers, one for the high gain and one for the low gain, ensure the read-out of the charge from 160 fC to 320 pC (i.e. from 1 to 2000 photo-electrons with SiPM gain = 10$^{6}$, with a photo-electron to noise ratio of 10). The signal in each of the two preamplifier chains is shaped and the maximum value is captured by activating the peak detector for an adjustable time interval. In this work, we illustrate the peak detector operation mode and, in particular, how this can be used to calibrate the SiPM gain without the need of external light sources. To demonstrate the validity of the method, we also present and discuss some laboratory measurements.
In recent years, a number of purpose-built scintillator-based polarimeters have studied bright astronomical sources for the first time in the hard X-ray band (tens to hundreds of keV). The addition of polarimetry can help data interpretation by resolving model-dependent degeneracies. The typical instrument approach is that incident X-rays scatter off a plastic scintillator into an adjacent scintillator cell. In all missions to date, the scintillators are read out using traditional vacuum tube photo-multipliers (PMTs). The advent of solid-state PMTs ("silicon PM" or "MPPC") is attractive for sp…
Large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are desired in many applications where large surfaces have to be covered. For instance, a large area SiPM has been developed by Hamamatsu Photonics in collaboration with the University of Geneva, to equip gamma-ray cameras employed in imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Being the sensor about 1 cm$^2$, a suitable preamplification electronics has been investigated in this work, which can deal with long pulses induced by the large capacitance of the sensor. The so-called Multiple Use SiPM Integrated Circuit (MUSIC), developed by the ICCUB (Univer…
Aiming to measure the difference in arrival times of two coincident gamma-photons with an accuracy in the order of 200 ps, time-of-flight positron emission tomography systems commonly employ silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and high-resolution digitization electronics, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs). This work evaluates the performance of the TOFPET2 ASIC, released by PETsys Electronics S.A. in 2017, dependent on its configuration parameters in multi-channel coincidence measurements. SiPM arrays fabricated by different vendors (KETEK, SensL, Hamamatsu, Broadcom) were tested i…
In state-of-the-art positron emission (PET) tomography systems, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs)are commonly used to precisely digitize the signals of analog silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). However, when operating PET electronics in a magnetic resonance (MR) system, one faces the challenge of mutual interference of these imaging techniques. To prevent signal deterioration along long analog signal lines, PET electronics with a low power consumption digitizing the signals close to the SiPMs are preferred. In this study, we evaluate the power consumption of the TOFPET2 ASIC. It…
The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is proposed to first use a cold liquid scintillator detector (-50~$^\circ$C) equipped with large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) ($\sim$10~m$^2$) to precisely measure the reactor antineutrino spectrum with a record energy resolution of < 2\% at 1 MeV. The KLauS ASIC shows excellent performance at room temperature and is a potential readout solution for TAO. In this work, we report evaluations of the fifth version of the KLauS ASIC (KLauS5) from room temperature to -50~$^\circ$C with inputs of injected charge or SiPMs. Our results show that KLauS…
The continued advancements of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) have made them viable photosensors for low recoil energy Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) between fast neutron and gamma interactions when coupled to an appropriate scintillator. At the same time, the large number of channels in a typical array calls for the development of low-cost and low-power electronics. A custom integrated circuit (ASIC) is an ideal solution for this purpose. To assess the requirements for such an ASIC, studies were performed using two scintillators, Stilbene and EJ-276, coupled to a 6 x 6 mm SiPM from Onsemi.…
In this study an array of eight 6 mm x 6 mm area SiPMs was coupled to the end of a long plastic scintillator counter which was exposed to a 2.5 GeV/c muon beam at the CERN PS. Timing characteristics of bars with dimensions 150 cm x 6 cm x 1 cm and 120 cm x 11 cm x 2.5 cm have been studied. An 8-channel SiPM anode readout ASIC (MUSIC R1) based on a novel low input impedance current conveyor has been used to read out and amplify SiPMs independently and sum the signals at the end. Prospects for applications in large-scale particle physics detectors with timing resolution below 100 ps are provided…
The FERS-5200 is the new CAEN Front-End Readout System for large detector arrays. It consists in a compact, distributed and easy-deployable solution integrating front-end based on ASICs, A/D conversion, data processing, synchronization and readout. Using the appropriate Front-End the solution perfectly fits a wide range of detectors such as SiPMs, multianode PMTs, GEMs, Silicon Strip detectors, Wire Chambers, Gas Tubes, etc. The first member of the FERS family is the unit A5202, a 64 channel readout card for SiPMs, based on the CITIROC ASIC by Weeroc SaS. The Concentrator board DT5215 can mana…
In recent years, SiPM photoelectric devices have drawn much attention in the domain of time-of-flight-based positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). Using them to construct PET detectors with excellent coincidence time resolution (CTR) is always one of research focus. In this paper, a SiPM readout pre-amplifier based on common-base current amplifier structure followed by a Pole-Zero (PZ) compensation network is constructed, and the main factors that affect the timing performance of the PET detector are investigated. By experimental measurement, we found that the CTR is heavily related to the ba…
The aim of this work is to show the potential capabilities of monolithic crystals coupled to large SiPM arrays, to be considered as detector blocks for PET scanners enabling Time Of Flight (TOF) capabilities. Monolithic blocks allow one to decode the 3D photon impact position. This approach, along with TOF information, can be of high interest in clinical Positron emission tomography (PET) applications where a typical ring configuration is used. In this manuscript, we evaluate an ASIC- based readout for digitizing all signals coming from analog photosensors. Validation results with one-to-one c…

Plastic scintillator detectors have been extensively used in particle physics experiments for decades. A large-scale detector is typically arranged as an array of staggered long bars which provide a fast trigger signal and/or particle identification via time-of-flight measurements. Scintillation light is collected by photosensors coupled to both ends of every bar. In this article, we present our study on a direct replacement of commonly used vacuum photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by arrays of large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). An SiPM array which is directly coupled to the scintillator …
The Analogue Hadron Calorimeter (AHCAL) is being developed within the CALICE collaboration for experiments at a future lepton collider. It is a sampling calorimeter with alternating layers of steel absorber plates and plastic scintillator tiles as active material. In the SiPM on tile design, the tiles are directly coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The front-end electronics are integrated into the active layers of the calorimeter. They are designed for low power consumption by rapidly power cycling according to the beam structure of a linear accelerator. In 2017 and 2018, a new large…
Development of the Silicon photomultiplier Elementary Cell Add-on camera (SiECA) has provided extensive information regarding the use of SiPMs for future cosmic ray detection systems. A PET scanner based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) has been widely used as an advanced nuclear medicine imaging technique that yields quantitative images of regional in vivo biology and biochemistry. The compact size of the SiPM allows direct one to one coupling between the scintillation crystal and the photosensor, yielding better timing and energy resolutions than the light sharing methods that have to be used in photomultiplier tube (PMT) PET systems. To decrease the volume of readout electronics, a front end multiplexer with position decoder is a common choice for the one to one syste…
