While kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) have been well studied for decades since their initial discovery, the cause of these signals remains unknown, as no model has been able to accurately predict all of their spectral and timing properties. Separately, X-ray reverberation lags have been detected in AGN and stellar-mass black hole binaries, and reverberation may be expected to occur in neutron star systems as well, producing lags of the same amplitude as the lags measured of the kHz QPOs. Furthermore, the detection of a relativistically reflected Fe K line in the time-averaged spectra of many neutron star systems provides an additional motivation for testing reverberation. While it has been shown that the lag-energy properties of the lower kHz QPOs are unlikely to be produced by X-ray reverberation, the upper kHz QPOs have not yet been explored. We therefore model the upper kHz QPO lag-energy spectra using relativistic ray-tracing functions and apply them to archival RXTE data on 4U 1728-34 where upper kHz QPOs have been detected. By modeling the time-averaged spectra in which upper kHz QPOs had been significantly detected, we determine the reflected flux fraction across all energies and produce a model for the lag-energy spectra from X-ray reverberation. We explore the dependence of the modeled lag properties on several different types of reflection models, but are unable to successfully reproduce the measured lags of 4U 1728-34. We conclude that reverberation alone does not explain the measured time lags detected in upper kHz QPOs.
The kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) have been found in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), which present the millisecond timing phenomena close to the surface of the compact objects. We briefly summarize the following contents: (1). The correlations and distributions of twin kHz QPOs; (2). The relations of high-low frequency QPOs; (3). The QPO properties of NS Atoll and Z sources; (4). No clear direct correlations between NS spins and QPOs; (5). The mechanisms of kHz QPOs; (6). The implications of kHZ QPOs, e.g., NS mass and radius, disk thickness and magnetic fie…
We analyze the relation between the emission radii of twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) and the co-rotation radii of the 12 neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs) which are simultaneously detected with the twin kHz QPOs and NS spins. We find that the average co-rotation radius of these sources is r_co about 32 km, and all the emission positions of twin kHz QPOs lie inside the corotation radii, indicating that the twin kHz QPOs are formed in the spin-up process. It is noticed that the upper frequency of twin kHz QPOs is higher than NS spin frequency by > 10%, which …
We take the recently published data of twin kHz quasi-period oscillations (QPOs) in neutron star (NS) lowmass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) as the samples, and investigate the morphology of the samples, which focuses on the quality factor, peak frequency of kHz QPOs, and try to infer their physical mechanism. We notice that: (1) The quality factors of upper kHz QPOs are low (2 ~ 20 in general) and increase with the kHz QPO peak frequencies for both Z and Atoll sources. (2) The distribution of quality factor versus frequency for the lower kHz QPOs are quite different between Z and Atoll sources. For m…
Using the recently published data of twin kHz quasi-period oscillations (QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), we study the different profiles between bright Z sources and less luminous Atoll sources in a statistical way. We find the quality factors of upper kHz QPOs show a narrow distribution both for Z sources and Atoll sources, which concentrate at 7.98 and 9.75 respectively, the quality factors of lower kHz QPOs show a narrow distribution for Z sources and a broader distribution for Atoll sources, which concentrate at 5.25 and 86.22 respectively. In order to investigate th…
Kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations or kHz QPOs occur on the orbital timescale of the inner accretion flow and may carry signatures of the physics of strong gravity (c$^{2}$ ~ GM/R) and possibly clues to constraining the neutron star equation of state (EOS). Both the timing behavior of kHz QPOs and the time-averaged spectra of these systems have been studied extensively, yet no model completely describes all the properties of kHz QPOs. Here, we present a systematic study of spectral-timing products of kHz QPOs from low-mass X-ray binary systems using archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer/Prop…
We present a detailed spectral-timing analysis of the Kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in Sco X-1 using the data of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ($RXTE$) and the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope ($Insight$-HXMT). The energy band with detectable kHz QPOs is studied for the first time: on the horizontal branch, it is $\sim$ 6.89--24.01 keV and $\sim$ 8.68--21.78 keV for the upper and lower kHz QPOs detected by $RXTE$, and $\sim$ 9--27.5 keV for the upper kHz QPOs by $Insight$-HXMT; on the lower normal branch, the energy band is narrower. The fractional root mean square (rms) of the…
A possible origin of kHz QPOs in low-mass X-ray binaries is proposed. Recent numerical MHD simulations of accretion disks with turbulent magnetic fields of MRI definitely show the presence of two-armed spiral structure in quasi-steady state of accretion disks. In such deformed disks, two-armed ($m=2$) c-mode ($n=1$) oscillations are excited by wave-wave resonant instability. Among these excited oscillations, the fundamental in the radial direction ($n_r=0$) will be the higher kHz QPO of a twin QPOs, and the first overtone ($n_r=1$) in the radial direction will be the lower kHz QPO of the twin.…
We infer the emission positions of twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs) based on the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM). For most sources, the emission radii of kHz QPOs cluster around a region of 16-19 km with the assumed NS radii of 15 km. Cir X-1 has the larger emission radii of 23-38 km than those of the other sources, which may be ascribed to its large magnetosphere-disk radius or strong NS surface magnetic field. SAX J1808.4-3658 is also a particular source with the relative large emission radii of kHz QPOs of 20 - 23 …
Based the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM) and relativistic precession model (RPM) for twin kHz QPOs, we estimate the emission positions of most detected kHz QPOs to be at r=18+-3 km (R/15km) except Cir X-1 at r = 30\+-5 km (R/15km). For the proposed Keplerian frequency as an upper limit to kHz QPO, the spin effects in Kerr Spacetime are discussed, which have about a 5% (2%) modification for that of the Schwarzchild case for the spin frequency of 1000 (400) Hz.The application to the four typical QPO sources, Cir X-1, Sco X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE 1807-294, is mentioned.
Soft lags from the emission of the lower kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of neutron star low mass X-ray binaries have been reported from 4U1608-522 and 4U1636-536. Those lags hold prospects for constraining the origin of the QPO emission. In this paper, we investigate the spectral-timing properties of both the lower and upper kHz QPOs from the neutron star binary 4U1728-34, using the entire Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer archive on this source. We show that the lag-energy spectra of the two QPOs are systematically different: while the lower kHz QPO shows soft lags, the upper kHz …
We examine whether the two-armed ($m=2$) vertical p-mode oscillations trapped in the innermost region of magnetized accretion disks with finite disk thickness can describe kHz QPOs and HBOs in LMXBs. First, we derive the frequency-frequency correlation of the two basic oscillations (both are fundamental modes in the vertical direction, but one is the fundamental and the other the first overtone in the radial direction), and compare it with the observed frequency correlation of twin kHz QPOs. Results show that the calculated frequency correlation can well describe observed correlation with reas…
Stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) are typically discovered by transient emission due to accretion or shocks of the stellar debris. Yet this luminous flare can be reprocessed by gas or dust that inhabits a galactic nucleus, resulting in multiple reverberation signals. Nuclear dust heated by the TDE will lead to an echo at infrared wavelengths (1-10 $μ$m) and transient coronal lines in optical spectra of TDEs trace reverberation by gas that orbits the black hole. Both of these signal have been detected, here we review this rapidly developing field. We also review the results that have been …
The width (W), root mean squared amplitude (Rs) of lower and upper kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from accreting neutron stars vary with frequency. Similarly, the QPO frequency varies with the source count rate (S). Hence, the significance of a QPO, scaling as S x Rs^2/W^(1/2) will also depend on frequency. In addition, the significance also scales up with the square root of the integration time of the Fourier power density spectrum (T). Consequently, depending on the way data are considered, kHz QPOs may be detected only over a limited range of their frequency spans or detected predom…
We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with a new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. The previous MHD model (Shi \& Li 2009) is re-examined and the relation between the frequencies of the kHz QPOs and the accretion rate in LMXBs is obtained. Our result agrees with the observations of six sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1636--53, 4U 1608--52, 4U 1915--15, 4U 1728--34, XTE 1807--294) with measured spins. In this model the kHz QPOs originate from the MHD waves in the compressed magne…
3D MHD simulation of accretion onto neutron stars have shown in the last few years that the footprint (hotspot) of the accretion flow changes with time. Two different kinds of accretion, namely the funnel flow and the equatorial accretion produced by instabilities at the inner disk, produce different kinds of motion of the hotspot. The funnel flow produces hotspots that move around the magnetic pole, while instabilities produce other hotspots that appear randomly and move along the equator or slightly above. The angular velocities of the two hotspots are different, the equatorial one being hig…
X-ray reverberation lags have recently been discovered in both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and black hole X-ray binaries. A recent study of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1608-52 has also shown significant lags, whose properties hint at a reverberation origin. Here, we adapt general relativistic ray tracing impulse response functions used to model X-ray reverberation in AGN for neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. Assuming relativistic reflection forms the broad iron line and associated reflection continuum, we use reflection fits to the energy spectrum along with the impulse resp…
We investigate the correlation between the frequencies of the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) and the neutron star (NS) spins in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), based on the data sets of 12 sources with simultaneously detected twin kHz QPOs and NS spins, and find that the histogram of the ratio between the frequency difference of twin kHz QPOs (Δν = ν2 - ν1) and NS spin νs shows a non-uniform distribution with a gap at Δν/νs ~ 0.65. We try to classify the 12 sources into two categories according to this gap: (I) The slow rotators with <νs> ~ 311 Hz, XTE J1807.4-294, 4U 1…
We investigate the highest-frequency kHz QPOs previously detected with RXTE in six neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binaries. We find that the highest-frequency kHz QPO detected in 4U 0614+09 has a 1267 Hz 3$σ$ confidence lower limit on its centroid frequency. This is the highest such limit reported to date, and of direct physical interest as it can be used to constrain QPO models and the supranuclear density equation of state (EoS). We compare our measured frequencies to maximum orbital frequencies predicted in full GR using models of rotating neutron stars with a number of different modern E…
We have examined the frequencies of trapped two-armed ($m=2$) nearly vertical oscillations (vertical p-mode) in vertically isothermal disks with toroidal magnetic fields. The magnetic fields are stratified so that the Alfvén speed, $c_{\rm A}$, is constant in the vertical direction. We have particularly focused our attention on how frequencies of the fundamental mode ($n_{\rm r}=0$) and first overtone ($n_{\rm r}=1$) in the radial direction change with correlation, when the ratio $c_{\rm A}^2/c_{\rm s}^2$ changes, $c_{\rm s}$ being the isothermal acoustic speed. The results show that in the ca…
By fitting the frequencies of simultaneous lower and upper kilohertz Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (kHz QPOs) in two prototype neutron star QPO sources (4U~1636-536 and Sco X-1), we test the predictive power of all currently proposed QPO models. Models predict either a linear, power-law or any other relationship between the two frequencies. We found that for plausible neutron star parameters (mass and angular momentum), no model can satisfactorily reproduce the data, leading to very large chi-squared values in our fittings. Both for 4U~1636-53 and Sco X-1, this is largely due to the fact that th…
We suggest that the mass of four compact stars SAX J1808.4$-$3658, KS 1731$-$260, SAX J1750.8$-$2900 and IGR J17191$-$2821 can be determined from the difference in the observed kiloHertz quasi periodic oscillations (kHz QPO-s) of these stars. The stellar radius is very close to the marginally stable orbit $R_{ms}$ as predicted by Einstein's general relativity. It may be noted that the first of these stars was suggested to be a strange star more than a decade back by Li \emph{et al.} (1999) from the unique millisecond X-ray pulsations with an accurate determination of its rotation period. It sh…
We perform the first systematic search of all NICER archival observations of black hole (and candidate) low-mass X-ray binaries for signatures of reverberation. Reverberation lags result from the light travel time difference between the direct coronal emission and the reflected disk component, and therefore their properties are a useful probe of the disk-corona geometry. We detect new signatures of reverberation lags in 8 sources, increasing the total sample from 3 to 11, and study the evolution of reverberation lag properties as the sources evolve in outbursts. We find that in all of the 9 so…
We present for the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53, and for the first time for any source of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs), the two-dimensional behaviour of the fractional rms amplitude of the kHz QPOs in the parameter space defined by QPO frequency and photon energy. We find that the rms amplitude of the lower kHz QPO increases with energy up to $\sim12$ keV and then decreases at higher energies, while the rms amplitude of the upper kHz QPO either continues increasing or levels off at high energies. The rms amplitude of the lower kHz QPO increases and then d…
High frequency soft reverberation lags have now been detected from stellar mass and super massive black holes. Their interpretation involves reflection of a hard source of photons onto an accretion disk, producing a delayed reflected emission, with a time lag consistent with the light travel time between the irradiating source and the disk. Independently of the location of the clock, the kHz Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) emission is thought to arise from the neutron star boundary layer. Here, we search for the signature of reverberation of the kHz QPO emission, by measuring the soft lags an…
We investigate the relation between the parameters of the energy spectrum and the frequency and amplitude of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53. We fit the $3-180$-keV spectrum of this source with a model that includes a thermal Comptonisation component. We show that the frequencies of both kHz QPOs follow the same relation as a function of the parameters of this spectral component, except for a systematic frequency shift, whereas the rms fractional amplitude of each QPO follows a different relation with respect to those same paramete…
Trapping of two-armed ($m=2$) vertical p-mode oscillations in relativistic disks are examined. The disks are assumed to be isothermal in the vertical direction, but are truncated at a certain height by the presence of corona. The same issues have been examined in a previous paper (Kato 2012a). In this paper, unlike the previous paper, however, we do not use the approximation that the oscillations are nearly vertical, but limit to a simpler case of no magnetic field. As in the previous paper, the results suggest that the two basic oscillation modes [both are the fundamental ($n=1$) in the verti…
We report the discovery of kHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) in three Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) XTE J1701-407. In one of the observations we detect a kHz QPO with a characteristic frequency of 1153 +/- 5 Hz, while in the other two observations we detect twin QPOs at characteristic frequencies of 740 +/- 5 Hz, 1112 +/- 17 Hz and 740 +/- 11 Hz, 1098 +/- 5 Hz. All detections happen when XTE J1701-407 was in its high intensity soft state, and their single trial significance are in the 3.1-7.5 sigma range. The frequency difference in the centr…
We collect the data of twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) published before 2012 from 26 neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) sources, then we analyze the centroid frequency (ν) distribution of twin kHz QPOs (lower frequency ν_1 and upper frequency ν_2) both for Atoll and Z sources. For the data without shift-and-add, we find that Atoll and Z sources show the different distributions of ν_1, ν_2 and ν_2/ν_1, but the same distribution of Δν(difference of twin kHz QPOs), which indicates that twin kHz QPOs may share the common properties of LXMBs and have the same physi…
We analysed 866 observations of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-462 during its 2006-2007 outburst. XTE J1701-462 is the only example so far of a source that during an outburst showed, beyond any doubt, spectral and timing characteristics both of the Z and atoll type. We found that the lower kHz QPO in the atoll phase has a significantly higher coherence and fractional rms amplitude than any of the kHz QPOs seen during the Z phase, and that in the same frequency range, atoll lower kHz QPOs show coherence and fractional rms amplitude, respectively, 2 and 3 times larger than the …
EXO1745-248 is a transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. It was in outburst in 2000 and displayed during one Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation a highly coherent quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at frequencies between 670 and 715 Hz. Applying a maximum likelihood method to fit the X-ray power density spectrum, we show that the QPO can be detected on segments as short as T=48 seconds. We find that its width is consistent with being constant, while previous analysis based on longer segment duration (200 s) found it variable. If the QPO frequenc…
We investigate the quality factor and RMS amplitude of the lower kHz QPOs from XTE J1701-462, a unique X-ray source which was observed in both the so-called Z and atoll states. Correcting for the frequency drift of the QPO, we show that, as in all sources for which such a correction can be applied, the quality factor and RMS amplitude drops sharply above above a critical frequency. For XTE J1701-462 this frequency is estimated to be ~800 Hz, where the quality factor reaches a maximum of ~200 (e.g. a value consistent with the one observed from more classical systems, such as 4U~1636-536). Such …
Both the broad iron (Fe) line and the frequency of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) can potentially provide independent measures of the inner radius of the accretion disc. We use XMM-Newton and simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the LMXB 4U 1636-53 to test this hypothesis. We study the properties of the Fe-K emission line as a function of the spectral state of the source and the frequency of the kHz QPOs. We find that the inner radius of the accretion disc deduced from the frequency of the upper kHz QPO v…
We present a detailed study of the X-ray energy and power spectral properties of the neutron star transient IGR J17191-2821. We discovered four instances of pairs of simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). The frequency difference between these kHz QPOs is between 315 Hz and 362 Hz. We also report on the detection of five thermonuclear type-I X-ray bursts and the discovery of burst oscillations at ~294 Hz during three of them. Finally, we report on a faint and short outburst precursor, which occurred about two months before the main outburst. Our results on the broadband…
We have taken the kHz QPOs as a tool to probe the correlation between the tracks of X-ray color-color diagram (CCD) and magnetosphere-disk positions for the atoll source 4U 1728-34, based on the assumptions that the upper kHz QPO is ascribed to the Keplerian orbital motion and the neutron star (NS) magnetosphere is defined by the dipole magnetic field. We find that from the island to the banana state, the inner accretion disk gradually approaches the NS surface with the radius decreasing from r ~33.0km to ~15.9 km, corresponding to the magnetic field from B(r) ~4.8*10^6 G to ~4.3*10^7 G. In ad…
In earlier works, we had shown that the observed soft lags and r.m.s versus energy of the lower kHz QPO of neutron star binaries can be explained in the framework of a thermal Comptonization model. It was also shown that such an interpretation can provide estimates of the size and geometry of the Comptonizing medium. Here we study the dependence of these estimates on the time-averaged spectral model assumed and on the frequency of the QPO. We use the high quality time lag and r.m.s obtained during March 3rd 1996 observation of 4U 1608-52 by RXTE as well as other observations of the source at d…
We report on the aperiodic X-ray timing and color behavior of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) IGR J17511-3057, using all the pointed observations obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array since the source's discovery on 2009 September 12. The source can be classified as an atoll source on the basis of the color and timing characteristics. It was in the hard state during the entire outburst. In the beginning and at the end of the outburst, the source exhibited what appear to be twin kHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs). The separation Δνbetween the…
Spectral-timing analysis of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations and constraints on the mass of the neutron star in 4U 1636-536 using AstroSat observations
The observation of a pair of simultaneous twin kHz QPOs in the power density spectrum of a neutron star or a black hole allows its mass-angular-momentum relation to be constrained. Situations in which the observed simultaneous pairs are more than one allow the different models of the kHz QPOs to be falsified. Discrepancy between the estimates coming from the different pairs would call the used model into question. In the current paper the relativistic precession model is applied to the twin kHz QPOs that appear in the light curves of three groups of observations of the accreting millisecond X-…
{We investigate the coherence of the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) theoretically. The profile of upper kHz QPO, interpreted as Keplerian frequency, is ascribed to the radial extent of the kHz QPO emission region, associated with the transitional layer at the magnetosphere-disk boundary, which corresponds to the coherence of upper kHz QPO. The theoretical model for Q-factor of upper kHz QPO is applied to the observational data of five Atoll and five Z sources, and the consistence is implied.
(abridged) We studied the energy and frequency dependence of the Fourier time lags and intrinsic coherence of the kHz QPOs in the NS LMXBs 4U 1608-52 and 4U 1636-53 using RXTE data. In both sources we confirmed energy-dependent soft lags of 10-100 μs for the lower kHz QPO. We also found that the time lags of the upper kHz QPO are independent of energy and inconsistent with the soft lags of the lower kHz QPO. The intrinsic coherence of the lower kHz QPO remains constant at 0.6 from 5 to 12 keV, and then drops to zero, while for the upper kHz QPO the intrinsic coherence is consistent with zero a…
We study the energy-dependent time lags and rms fractional amplitude of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of a group of neutron-star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We find that for the lower kHz QPO the slope of the best-fitting linear model to the time-lag spectrum and the total rms amplitude integrated over the 2 to 25 keV energy band both decrease exponentially with the luminosity of the source. For the upper kHz QPO the slope of the time-lag spectrum is consistent with zero, while the total rms amplitude decreases exponentially with the luminosity of the source. We sho…
Observations of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in X-ray binaries hold a key to understanding many aspects of these enigmatic systems. Complex appearance of the Fourier phase lags related to QPOs is one of the most puzzling observational effects in accreting black holes. In this Letter we show that QPO properties, including phase lags, can be explained in a framework of a simple scenario, where the oscillating media provides a feedback on the emerging spectrum. We demonstrate that the QPO waveform is presented by the product of a perturbation and a time delayed response factors, where the r…
Binary systems with a neutron-star primary accreting from a companion star display variability in the X-ray band on time scales ranging from years to milliseconds. With frequencies of up to ~1300 Hz, the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) represent the fastest variability observed from any astronomical object. The sub-millisecond time scale of this variability implies that the kHz QPOs are produced in the accretion flow very close to the surface of the neutron star, providing a unique view of the dynamics of matter under the influence of some of the strongest gravitational fields…
The kHz QPOs observed in a neutron star low mass X-ray binary are likely to be produced in the innermost regions of accretion disk around the neutron star. The rotational dynamics of the inner disk can be characterized by the presence of either sub-Keplerian or super-Keplerian accretion flow depending on the relative fastness of the neutron spin as compared to the Keplerian frequency at the inner disk radius. Within the magnetosphere-disk interaction model, the frequency difference between the two kHz QPOs observed in a given source can be estimated to be slightly higher than or nearly around …
Inverse Compton scattering dominates the high energy part of the spectra of neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). It has been proposed that inverse Compton scattering also drives the radiative properties of kilohertz quasi periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). In this work, we construct a model that predicts the energy dependence of the rms amplitude and time lag of the kHz QPOs. Using this model, we fit the rms amplitude and time lag energy spectra of the lower kHz QPO in the NS LMXB 4U 1636-53 over 11 frequency intervals of the QPO and report three important findings: (i) A medium t…
We analysed 14 observations with kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of the neutron star X-ray binary XTE J1701$-$462, the first source to show a clear transition between atoll and Z-like behaviour during a single outburst. We calculated the average cross-spectrum of both atoll and Z-phase observations of XTE J1701$-$462 between a reference/hard band (6.1 - 25.7 keV) and a subject/soft band (2.1 - 5.7 keV) to obtain, using a novel technique, the average time lags of the lower and upper kHz QPOs. During the atoll phase, we found that at the frequency of the lower kHz QPO the soft p…
We analyze all available RXTE data on a sample of 13 low mass X-ray binaries with known neutron star spin that are not persistent pulsars. We carefully measure the correlations between the centroid frequencies of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We compare these correlations to the prediction of the relativistic precession model (RPM) that, due to frame dragging, a QPO will occur at the Lense-Thirring precession frequency $ν_{LT}$ of a test particle orbit whose orbital frequency is the upper kHz QPO frequency $ν_u$. Contrary to the most prominent previous studies, we find two different …
We report on a comprehensive analysis of the kilohertz (above 300 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) detected from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U0614+09 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With a much larger data set than previously analyzed (all archival data from February 1996 up to October 2007), we first investigate the reality of the 1330 Hz QPO reported by van Straaten et al. (2000). This QPO would be of particular interest since it has the highest frequency reported for any source. A thorough analysis of the same observation fails to confirm the detection. On…

We investigate frequency correlations of low frequency (LF, <80 Hz) and kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) using the complete RXTE data sets on 6 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) and compare them to those of non-pulsating neutron star low mass X-ray binaries with known spin. For the AMXPs SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1807-294, we find frequency-correlation power law indices that, surprisingly, are significantly lower than in the non-pulsars, and consistent with the relativistic precession model (RPM) prediction of 2.0 appropriate to test-particle orbital and Lense-Thirring precessi…
The intense radiation flux of Type I X-ray bursts is expected to interact with the accretion flow around neutron stars. High frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (kHz QPOs), observed at frequencies matching orbital frequencies at tens of gravitational radii, offer a unique probe of the innermost disk regions. In this paper, we follow the lower kHz QPOs, in response to Type I X-ray bursts, in two prototypical QPO sources, namely 4U 1636-536 and 4U 1608-522, as observed by the Proportional Counter Array of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We have selected a sample of 15 bursts for which the kHz …
We study the relation between the 300-700 Hz upper kHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) and the 401 Hz coherent pulsations across all outbursts of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We find that the pulse amplitude systematically changes by a factor of ~2 when the upper kHz QPO frequency passes through 401 Hz: it halves when the QPO moves to above the spin frequency and doubles again on the way back. This establishes for the first time the existence of a direct effect of kHz QPOs on the millisecond pulsations and provides a ne…
We continue our earlier studies of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the power spectra of accreting, rapidly-rotating black holes that originate from the geometric "light echoes" of X-ray flares occurring within the black hole ergosphere. Our present work extends our previous treatment to three-dimensional photon emission and orbits to allow for arbitrary latitudes in the positions of the distant observers and the X-ray sources in place of the mainly equatorial positions and photon orbits of the earlier consideration. Following the trajectories of a large number of photons we calculate the…
We have studied the aperiodic variability of the 401 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 using the complete data set collected with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer over 14 years of observation. The source shows a number of exceptional aperiodic timing phenomena that are observed against a backdrop of timing properties that show consistent trends in all five observed outbursts and closely resemble those of other atoll sources. We performed a detailed study of the enigmatic ~410 Hz QPO, which has only been observed in SAX J1808.4-3658. We find that it appears only when the upp…
We analysed the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data from a sample of bright accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). With the aim of studying the quasi-periodic variability as a function of the accretion regime, we carried out a systematic search of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray time series of these systems, using the integrated fractional variability as a tracker for the accretion states. We found that the three QPO types originally identified in the '80s for the brightest LMXBs, the so-called Z-sources, i.e., horizontal, normal and flaring branch…
Most models of the low frequency quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) explain the dynamical properties of those QPOs. On the other hand, in recent years reverberation models that assume a lamp-post geometry have been successfull in explaining the energy-dependent time lags of the broad-band noise component in stellar mass black-holes and active galactic nuclei. We have recently shown that Comptonisation can explain the spectral-timing properties of the kilo-hertz (kHz) QPOs observed in neutron star (NS) LMXBs. It is therefore worth exploring whether the same fa…
Spectral-timing products of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) systems, including energy- and frequency-dependent lags, have been analyzed previously in 4U 1608-52, 4U 1636-53, and 4U 1728-34. Here, we study the spectral-timing properties of the lower kHz QPO of the neutron star LMXB Aquila X-1 for the first time. We compute broadband energy lags, as well as energy-dependent lags and the covariance spectrum using data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We find very similar characteristics to other previously studied systems, including sof…
