High-throughput density functional calculations are used to investigate the effect of interstitial B, C and N atoms on 21 alloys reported to crystallize in the cubic Cu$_3$Au structure. It is shown that the interstitials can have a significant impact on the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), the thermodynamic stability and the magnetic ground state structure, making these alloys interesting for hard magnetic, magnetocaloric and other applications. For 29 alloy/interstitial combinations the formation of stable alloys with interstitial concentrations above 5\% is expected. In Ni$_3$Mn interstitial N induces a tetragonal distortion with substantial uniaxial MAE for realistic N concentrations. Mn$_3X$N$_x$ ($X$=Rh, Ir, Pt and Sb) are identified as alloys with strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy. For Mn$_3$Ir we find a strong enhancement of the MAE upon N alloying in the most stable collinear ferrimagnetic state as well as in the non-collinear magnetic ground state. Mn$_3$Ir and Mn$_3$IrN show also interesting topological transport properties. The effect of N concentration and strain on the magnetic properties are discussed. Further, the huge impact of N on the MAE of Mn$_3$Ir and a possible impact of interstitial N on amorphous Mn$_3$Ir, a material that is indispensable in today's data storage devices, are discussed at hand of the electronic structure. For Mn$_3$Sb, non-collinear, ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic states are very close in energy, making this material potentially interesting for magnetocaloric applications. For the investigated Mn alloys and competing phases, the determination of the magnetic ground state is essential for a reliable prediction of the phase stability.
The remarkable mechanical properties of high entropy alloys can be further improved by interstitial alloying. In this work we employ density functional theory calculations to study the solution energies of dilute carbon interstitial atoms in tetrahedral and octahedral sites in bcc HfNbTiVZr. Our results indicate that carbon interstitials in tetrahedral sites are unstable, and the preferred octahedral sites present a large spread in the energy of solution. The inclusion of carbon interstitials induces large structural relaxations with long-range effects. The effect of local chemical environment…
Due to their high strength and advantageous high-temperature properties, tungsten-based alloys are being considered as plasma-facing candidate materials in fusion devices. Under neutron irradiation, rhenium, which is produced by nuclear transmutation, has been found to precipitate in elongated precipitates forming thermodynamic intermetallic phases at concentrations well below the solubility limit. Recent measurements have shown that Re precipitation can lead to substantial hardening, which may have a detrimental effect on the fracture toughness of W alloys. This puzzle of sub-solubility preci…

Based on high-throughput density functional theory calculations, we investigated the effects of light interstitial H, B, C, and N atoms on the magnetic properties of cubic Heusler alloys, with the aim to design new rare-earth free permanent magnets. It is observed that the interstitial atoms induce significant tetragonal distortions, leading to 32 candidates with large ($>$ 0.4 MJ/m$^3$) uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy energies (MAEs) and 10 cases with large in-plane MAEs. Detailed analysis following the the perturbation theory and chemical bonding reveals the strong MAE originates fro…
Impurity diffusion in Zr is potentially important for many applications of Zr alloys, and in particular for their use of nuclear reactor cladding. However, significant uncertainty presently exists about which elements are vacancy vs. interstitial diffusers, which can inhibit understanding and prediction of their behavior under different temperature, irradiation, and alloying conditions. Therefore, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been employed to predict the temperature-dependent dilute impurity diffusion coefficients for 14 substitutional alloying el…
Solute clusters in long period stacking order (LPSO) alloys play a key role in their idiosyncratic plastic behavior, for example kink formation and kink strengthening. Identifying atomistic details of cluster structures is a prerequisite for atomistic modeling of LPSO alloys and is crucial for improving their strength and ductility; however, there is much uncertainty regarding interstitial atoms in the cluster. Although density functional theory calculations have shown that the inclusion of Mg interstitial atoms is energetically most favorable in majority of LPSO alloys, solute elements have a…
Tensile tests were carried out by deforming polycrystalline samples of an interstitial alloy, low carbon steel at room temperature in a wide range of strain rates where the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect was observed. The observed stress time series data were analyzed using the nonlinear dynamical methods. From the analyses, we could establish the presence of marginal deterministic chaos in the PLC effect of the low carbon steel. Moreover, we made a comparative study of the PLC effect of this interstitial alloy with the substitutional Al-Mg alloy which shows that the dynamics of the PLC ef…
Interstitials (carbon and nitrogen) are crucial alloying elements for optimizing the mechanical performance of the twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels in terms of the stacking fault energy (SFE). First-principles calculations have been performed to study the effect of interstitial-induced lattice expansion on the SFE. Comparing the predictions with the SFEs measured for alloys containing C and N, our results suggest that the dominant effect of these interstitials on the SFE is due to the lattice expansion effect.
Tracer diffusion of the substitutional components in (CoCrFeNiMn)$_{1-x}$C$_x$ high-entropy alloys with x = 0.002, 0.005 and 0.008 (in at. fractions) is measured at elevated temperatures from 1173 to 1373 K. Two different characteristic effects of interstitial carbon addition on substitutional diffusion in these FCC alloys are distinguished. At the highest temperature of 1373 K, alloying by C with relatively low concentrations (x = 0.002) retards diffusion of the substitutional elements with respect to those in the C-free alloy. At lower temperatures and/or higher C concentrations (x > 0.005),…
Several approaches have been used to investigate the impact of Nitrogen (N) on the electronic structure of GaAs$_{1-x}$N$_{x}$ alloys, however, there is no agreement between theory and experiments about the importance of the different N interstitial defects in these alloys, and their nature is still unknown. Here we analyze the impact of five different N defects on the electronic structure of GaAs$_{1-x}$N$_{x}$ alloys, using density-functional methods: we calculate electronic states, formation energies and charge transition levels. The studied defects include N$_{As}$, As$_{Ga}$, As$_{Ga}$-N$…
Using the density functional theory, we perform a full atomic relaxation of the bulk ferrite with 12.5%-concentration of monoatomic interstitial Cr periodically located at the edges of the bcc Fe$_α$ cell. We show that structural relaxation in such artificially engineered alloys leads to significant atomic displacements and results in the formation of novel highly stable configurations with parallel chains of octahedrically arranged Fe. The enhanced magnetic polarization in the low-symmetry metallic state of this type of alloys can be externally controlled by additional inclusion of nonmagneti…
We derive an Ising Hamiltonian for kinetic simulations involving interstitial and vacancy defects in binary alloys. Our model, which we term `ABVI', incorporates solute transport by both interstitial defects and vacancies into a mathematically-consistent framework , and thus represents a generalization to the widely-used ABV model for alloy evolution simulations. The Hamiltonian captures the three possible interstitial configurations in a binary alloy: A-A, A-B, and B-B, which makes it particularly useful for irradiation damage simulations. All the constants of the Hamiltonian are expressed in…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) composed of multiple principal elements have been shown to offer improved radiation resistance over their elemental or dilute-solution counterparts. Using NiCoFeCrMn HEA as a model, here we introduce carbon and nitrogen interstitial alloying elements to impart chemical heterogeneities in the form of the local chemical order (LCO) and associated compositional variations. Density functional theory simulations predict chemical short-range order (CSRO) (nearest neighbors and the next couple of atomic shells) surrounding C and N, due to the chemical affinity of C with (Co…

Changes in temperature or stress state may induce reversible B2$\leftrightarrow$(R)$\leftrightarrow$ B19' martensitic transformations and associated shape memory effects in close-to-stoichiometric nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys. Recent experimental studies confirmed a considerable impact of the hydrogen-rich aging atmosphere on the subsequent B2 austenite $\leftrightarrow$ B19' martensite transformation path. In this paper, we employ Density Functional Theory to study properties of Ar, He, and H interstitials in B2 austenite and B19' martensite phases. We show that H interstitials exhibit negat…
Dislocations can climb out of their glide plane by absorbing (or emitting) point defects (vacancies and self-interstitial atoms (SIAs)). In contrast with conservative glide motion, climb relies on the point defects' thermal diffusion and hence operates on much longer timescales, leading to some forms of creep. Whilst equilibrium point defect concentrations allow dislocations to climb to relieve non-glide stresses, point defect supersaturations also lead to osmotic forces, driving dislocation motion even in the absence of external stresses. Self-interstitial atoms typically have significantly h…
We develop a fast and accurate machine-learned interatomic potential for the Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W quinary system and use it to study segregation and defects in the body-centred cubic refractory high-entropy alloy MoNbTaVW. In the bulk alloy, we observe clear ordering of mainly Mo-Ta and V-W binaries at low temperatures. In damaged crystals, our simulations reveal clear segregation of vanadium, the smallest atom in the alloy, to compressed interstitial-rich regions like radiation-induced dislocation loops. Vanadium also dominates the population of single self-interstitial atoms. In contrast, due to its…
We present a systematic investigation of the effect of H, B, C, and N interstitials on the electronic, lattice and magnetic properties of La(Fe,Si)$_{13}$ using density functional theory. The parent LaSiFe$_{12}$ alloy has a shallow, double-well free energy function that is the basis of itinerant metamagnetism. On increasing the dopant concentration, the resulting lattice expansion causes an initial increase in magnetisation for all interstitials that is only maintained at higher levels of doping in the case of hydrogen. Strong s-p band hybridisation occurs at high B,C and N concentrations. We…

Plasticity in body centered cubic (bcc) refractory metals are largely due to the stress tensor induced either by solute or thermal activation. The mechanism of the solute atom(s) residence causes instability in such metals. Earlier research have considered the mechanism of oxygen (O) or carbon (C) in tungsten (W), even though the major component of the environment is nitrogen (N). In this article, the density functional theory (DFT) was employed to investigate the thermodynamic stable site for an interstitial solute (N or O) in the bcc refractory metals (Mo and Nb) by calculating the equilibri…
A thermodynamic model based on the law of mass action is used to calculate concentrations of elementary point defects and to determine site preferences of solute atoms in ordered alloys. Combinations of lattice vacancies, antisite atoms and host interstitials that form equilibrium defects are enumerated for the CsCl (B2) and Ni2Al3 structures. For CsCl, in addition to the two substitutional sites, a distorted tetrahedral interstitial site is considered. For Ni2Al3, the Ni site, two distinct Al sites and a vacant, insterstitial-type Ni-site are considered. An equation of constraint among concen…
In this paper, the Fe-20Ni-25Cr alloy that is used for fuel cladding or pressure vessels with various grain boundaries (GBs) was investigated by employing molecular dynamics simulations. The bi-crystals comprised of Σ3(111), Σ3(112), Σ9(114), Σ11(113), Σ19(116), and Σ17(223) types GBs were considered to systematically examine the interplay between irradiation defects, irradiation microstructure evolution under stress, and irradiation mechanical properties with irradiation intensity, coincidence site lattice parameter, tilt angle, and GB thickness. It is found that irradiated vacancies and inte…
In the present work, a thin film was deposited on quartz substrate by reactive RF magnetron sputtering of high purity (99.999%) aluminium target using ultra-high pure (Ar + N2) gas mixture. The percentage ratio of Ar and N2 in the gas mixture was 95% and 5%, respectively. Chemical characterization using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive xray (EDX) spectroscopy reveals that in the presence of dilute nitrogen, Al prefers to react with residual oxygen to form Al2O3 while the nitrogen is incorporated in it. The stoichiometry of bulk film is Al2N0.38O3.1. Magnetic and ele…
We present the results of ab initio modeling of structure of dilute Ti-Fe, a typical representative of quenched Ti-based transition-metal alloys. We have demonstrated that beyond the solubility limit this alloy cannot be described in common terms of substitutional and interstitial alloys. Instead, very stable local clusters are formed in both low-temperature hcp and high-temperature bcc phases of alloys, with almost identical local structures. This gives an example of geometrically frustrated state and explains unusual concentration behavior of Mössbauer spectra discovered long ago for this sy…
An amorphous Se$_{0.80}$S$_{0.20}$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying was studied by Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and optical absorption spectroscopy, and also through reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its total structure factor and EXAFS data. Its vibrational modes, optical gap and structural properties as average interatomic distances and average coordination numbers were determined and compared to those found for an amorphous Se$_{0.90}$S$_{0.10}$ alloy. The results indicate that coordination numbers, interatomic distances and a…
Using special quasirandom structures (SQS's), we perform first-principles calculations studying the metastable bcc NiCu and FeCu alloys which occur in Fe-Cu-Ni alloy steels as precipitated second phase. The mixing enthalpies, density of state, and equilibrium lattice parameters of these alloys are reported. The results show that quasi-chemical approach and vegard rule can well predict the energetic and structural properties of FeCu alloys but fail to yield that of NiCu. The reason rests with the difference of bond energy variation with composition between NiCu and FeCu alloys induced by compet…
Ni$_2$Mn$_{2-y}$In$_y$ alloys transform from the martensitic $L1_0$ antiferromagnetic ground state near $y = 0$ to austenitic ferromagnetic $L2_1$ Heusler phase near $y = 1$ due to doping of In impurity for Mn. The off stoichiometric alloys prepared by rapid quenching are structurally metastable and dissociate into a mixture of $L2_1$ (Ni$_2$MnIn) and $L1_0$ (NiMn) phases upon temper annealing. Despite this structural disintegration, the martensitic transformation temperature remains invariant in the temper annealed alloys. Investigations of the local structure of the constituent atoms reveal …
A fundamental question in the study of ferromagnetic shap ememory alloys is the nature of magnetoelastic coupling and the extent it drives the structural transformation. This question also holds the key to developing new and optimized alloys that combine high strains at low switching field. In the present study it is shown that the reconfiguration of the micromagnetic structure is enslaved to and follows the martensitic transformation in these alloys using the NiMnGa and FePd alloy systems. This is determined by developing a new, high speed electronic method to study the temperature dependence…
We have investigated by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of Pd2Mo3N, Ni2Mo3C0.52N0.48, Co3Mo3C0.62N0.38, and Fe3Mo3C. We have found that they remain stable in their ambient-pressure cubic phase at least up to 48 GPa. All of them have a bulk modulus larger than 330 GPa, being the least compressible material Fe3Mo3C, B0 = 374(3) GPa. In addition, apparently a reduction of compressibility is detected as the carbon content increased. The equation of state for each material is determined. A comparison with other refractory materials indicates that interstitial nitri…
Ab-initio calculations for the structural properties of Zr-Nb alloys at different values of the niobium concentration are done at zero temperature. Different cases for Zr-Nb alloys with unit cells having BCC and HCP structures are considered. Optimal values of the lattice constants are obtained. Critical value for the niobium concentration corresponding to the structural transformation HCP \rightarrow BCC at zero temperature is determined. Electronic densities of states for two different structures with niobium concentrations 12.5% and 25% having HCP and BCC structures, accordingly, are studie…
In this work we present a detailed computational study of structural and elastic properties of cubic AlGaInN alloys in the framework of Keating valence force field model, for which we perform accurate parametrization based on state of the art DFT calculations. When analyzing structural properties, we focus on concentration dependence of lattice constant, as well as on the distribution of the nearest and the next nearest neighbour distances. Where possible, we compare our results with experiment and calculations performed within other computational schemes. We also present a detailed study of e…
We present a new phase field crystal model for structural transformations in multi-component alloys. The formalism builds upon the two-point correlation kernel developed in Greenwood et al. for describing structural transformations in pure materials [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 045702 (2010)]. We introduce an effective twopoint correlation function for multi-component alloys that uses the local species concentrations to interpolate between different crystal structures. A simplified version of the model is derived for the particular case of threecomponent (ternary) alloys, and its equilibrium propert…
Magnetic and transport properties of near-stoichiometric metastable FexMnyGaz alloys (46<x<52, 17<y25, 26<z<30) with face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and two-phase (FCC+BCC) structures are investigated. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of first-principles calculations of stoichiometric Fe2MnGa alloy with the L21, L12, and the tetragonally distorted L21 structural orderings. It is shown that the pure BCC and FCC phases have distinct magnetic and transport properties. Two-phase Fe2MnGa alloys have magnetic and transport properties typical of the mixed BCC and F…
The structural properties of the $Zn_xMg_{1-xS_ySe_{1-y}}$ solid solutions are determined by a combination of the computational alchemy and the cluster expansion methods with Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the phase diagram of the alloy and show that the homogeneous phase is characterized by a large amount of short-range order occurring among first-nearest neighbors. Electronic-structure calculations performed using the special quasi-random structures approach indicate that the energy gap of the alloy is rather sensitive to this short-range order.
Defect energy formation, lattice distortions and electronic structure of cubic In2O3 with Sn, Ga and O impurities were theoretically investigated using density functional theory. Different types of point defects, consisting of 1 to 4 atoms of Sn, Ga and O in both substitutional and interstitial (structural vacancy) positions, were examined. It was demonstrated, that formation of substitutional Ga and Sn defects are spontaneous, while formation of interstitial defects requires an activation energy. The donor-like behavior of interstitial Ga defects with splitting of conduction band into two sub…
First-principles-based materials screening is systematically performed to discover new combinations of chemical elements possibly making shape-memory alloys (SMAs). The B2, D03, and L21 crystal structures are considered as the parent phases, and the 2H and 6M structures are considered as the martensitic phases. 3,384 binary and 3,243 ternary alloys (6,627 in total) with stoichiometric composition ratios are investigated by the materials screening in terms of energetic and dynamical stabilities of the martensitic phases as well as structural compatibility between the parent and the martensitic …
The crystalline structures of superionic high temperature copper selenides Cu$_{2-x}$Se ($0 \le x \le 0.25$) produced by Mechanical Alloying were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The measured XRD patterns showed the presence of the peaks corresponding to the crystalline superionic high temperature $α$-Cu$_2$Se phase in the as-milled sample, and its structural data were determined by means of a Rietveld refinement procedure. After a heat treatment in argon at 200$^\circ$C for 90 h, this phase transforms to the superionic high temperature $α$-Cu$_{1.8}$Se phase, whose struct…
The effects of micro-alloying element, vanadium, on a bcc Fe Σ3(111)[1-10] symmetric tilt grain boundary strength are studied using density functional theory calculations. The lowest energy configuration of the grain boundary structure are obtained from the first-principles calculations. The substitutional and interstitial point defect formation energies of vanadium in the grain boundary are compared. The substitutional defect is prefered to interstitial one. The segregation energies of vanadium onto the grain boundary and its fractured surfaces are computed. The cohesive energy calculation of…
