Using the density functional theory, we perform a full atomic relaxation of the bulk ferrite with 12.5%-concentration of monoatomic interstitial Cr periodically located at the edges of the bcc Fe$_α$ cell. We show that structural relaxation in such artificially engineered alloys leads to significant atomic displacements and results in the formation of novel highly stable configurations with parallel chains of octahedrically arranged Fe. The enhanced magnetic polarization in the low-symmetry metallic state of this type of alloys can be externally controlled by additional inclusion of nonmagnetic impurities like nitrogen. We discuss possible applications of generated interstitial alloys in spintronic devices and propose to consider them as a basis of novel durable types of stainless steels.
Crystallographic defects play a key role in determining the properties of crystalline materials. The new class of two-dimensional materials, foremost graphene, have enabled atomically resolved studies of defects, such as vacancies, grain boundaries, dislocations, and foreign atom substitutions. However, atomic resolution imaging of implanted self-interstitials has so far not been reported in any three- but also not in any two-dimensional material. Here, we deposit extra carbon into single-layer graphene at soft landing energies of ~1 eV using a standard carbon coater. We identify all the self-…
It has been shown that many of the phenomena related to the formation of "tails" in the low-concentration region of ion-implanted impurity distribution are due to the anomalous diffusion of nonequilibrium impurity interstitials. These phenomena include boron implantation in preamorphized silicon, a "hot" implantation of indium ions, annealing of ion-implanted layers et cetera. In particular, to verify this microscopic mechanism, a simulation of boron redistribution during low-temperature annealing of ion-implanted layers has been carried out under different conditions of transient enhanced dif…
The following scenarios of Re-embedding into SiO2-host by pulsed Re-implantation were derived and discussed after XPS-and-DFT electronic structure qualification: (i) low Re-impurity concentration mode -> the formation of combined substitutional and interstitial impurities with Re2O7-like atomic and electronic structures in the vicinity of oxygen vacancies; (ii) high Re-impurity concentration mode -> the fabrication of interstitial Re-metal clusters with the accompanied formation of ReO2-like atomic structures and (iii) an intermediate transient mode with Re-impurity concentration increase, whe…
The analytical solutions of the equations describing impurity diffusion due to migration of nonequilibrium impurity interstitials were obtained for the impurity redistribution during ion implantation at elevated temperatures and for diffusion from a doped epitaxial layer. The reflecting boundary condition at the surface of a semiconductor and the conditions of constant concentrations at the surface and in the bulk of it were used in the first and second cases, respectively. On the basis of these solutions hydrogen diffusion in silicon during high-fluence low-energy deuterium implantation and b…
Cobalt and manganese ions are implanted into SiO$_2$ over a wide range of concentrations. For low concentrations, the Co atoms occupy interstitial locations, coordinated with oxygen, while metallic Co clusters form at higher implantation concentrations. For all concentrations studied here, Mn ions remain in interstitial locations and do not cluster. Using resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy and Anderson impurity model calculations, we determine the strength of the covalent interaction between the interstitial ions and the SiO$_2$ valence band, finding it comparable to Mn and Co monoxides. Fur…
We reveal the microscopic self-diffusion process of compact tri-interstitials in silicon using a combination of molecular dynamics and nudged elastic band methods. We find that the compact tri-interstitial moves by a collective displacement, involving both translation and rotation, of five atoms in a screw-like motion along $[111]$ directions. The elucidation of this pathway demonstrates the utility of combining tight-binding molecular dynamics with \textit{ab initio} density functional calculations to probe diffusion mechanisms. Using density functional theory to obtain diffusion barriers and…
On the basis of the Green function method, analytical solutions of the diffusion equation which describes nonstationary migration of nonequilibrium interstitial impurity atoms have been derived. It is supposed that the initial distribution of nonequilibrium impurity interstitials is formed due to ion implantation and, therefore, is described by the Gaussian function. The condition of the constant concentration of impurity interstitials (the Dirichlet boundary condition) or reflecting boundary condition was imposed on the surface of a semiconductor. The Dirichlet boundary condition was also enf…
The self-interaction corrected density-functional calculations are performed for Re impurities and their pairs in silicon. Rhenium ions form in the host crystal not very tight pairs, with impurities separated by one Si atom or by a distance close to two silicon bonds. Comparison of formation energies for various pairs of substitutionals, interstitials, and mixed-site impurities favours the last type. Electron transfer from the interstitial into the substitutional impurity makes the both Re sites nonmagnetic, but the p-type and the n-type co-doping revives magnetism again, the latter more effic…
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) measurements of pellet and thin film forms of TiO$_2$ with implanted Fe ions are presented and discussed. The findings indicate that Fe-implantation in a TiO$_2$ pellet sample induces heterovalent cation substitution (Fe$^{2+}\rightarrow$ Ti$^{4+}$) beneath the surface region. But in thin film samples, the clustering of Fe atoms is primarily detected. In addition to this, significant amounts of secondary phases of Fe$^{3+}$ are detected on the surface of all doped samples due to oxygen exposure. These experi…
In this work, we combine Density Functional Theory data with a Thermodynamic and a kinetic model to determine the total concentration of hydrogen implanted in the sub-surface of tungsten exposed to a hydrogen flux. The sub-surface hydrogen concentration is calculated given a flux of hydrogen, a temperature of implantation, and the energy of the incoming hydrogen ions as independent variables. This global model is built step by step; an equilibrium between atomic hydrogen within bulk tungsten and a molecular hydrogen gas phase is first considered, and the calculated solubility is compared with …
Electrical properties of point defects in 4$H$-SiC have been studied extensively, but those related to carbon interstitials (C$_{i}$) have remained surprisingly elusive until now. Indeed, when introduced via ion irradiation or implantation, signatures related to C$_{i}$ observed by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) tend to overlap with those of other primary defects, making the direct identification of C$_{i}$-related levels difficult. Recent literature has suggested to assign the so-called M center, often found in as-irradiated 4H-SiC, to charge state transitions of the C$_{i}$ defect …
The influence of nitrogen ion implantation on the microstructure and chemical composition of a thin layer on the biodegradable Zn-0.8Mg-0.2Sr substrate
Two-dimensional magnets are promising for nanoscale spintronic applications. Currently, most available candidates are based on $3d$ transition metal compounds, with hexagonal or honeycomb lattice geometry. Here, a GdCl$_3$ monolayer with $4f$ moments is theoretically studied, which can be exfoliated from its existing bulk. Its orthorhombic structure and hendecahedral ion cages are unique in two-dimensional. Furthermore, a significant structural reconstruction is caused by the implantation of Li atoms into its interstitial position, which also lead to ferromagnetism via a double-exchange-like p…
We propose a design scheme for potential electrides derived from conventional materials. Starting with rare-earth-based ternary halides, we exclude halogens and perform global structure optimization to obtain thermodynamically stable or metastable phases but having an excess of electrons confined inside interstitial cavities. Then, spin-polarized interstitial states are induced by chemical substitution with magnetic lanthanides. To demonstrate the capability of our approach, we test with 11 ternary halides and successfully predict 30 stable and metastable phases of nonmagnetic electrides subje…
We examine the behaviour of hydrogen ions, atoms and molecules in alpha-boron using density functional calculations. Hydrogen behaves as a negative-U centre, with positive H ions preferring to sit off-center on inter-layer bonds and negative H ions sitting preferably at in-plane sites between three B12 icosahedra. Hydrogen atoms inside B12 icosahedral cages are unstable, drifting off-center and leaving the cage with only a 0.09 eV barrier. While H0 is extremely mobile (diffusion barrier 0.25 eV), H+ and H- have higher diffusion barriers of 0.9 eV. Once mobile these defects will combine, formin…
