We derive an Ising Hamiltonian for kinetic simulations involving interstitial and vacancy defects in binary alloys. Our model, which we term `ABVI', incorporates solute transport by both interstitial defects and vacancies into a mathematically-consistent framework , and thus represents a generalization to the widely-used ABV model for alloy evolution simulations. The Hamiltonian captures the three possible interstitial configurations in a binary alloy: A-A, A-B, and B-B, which makes it particularly useful for irradiation damage simulations. All the constants of the Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of bond energies that can be computed using first-principles calculations. We implement our ABVI model in kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and perform a verification exercise by comparing our results to published irradiation damage simulations in simple binary systems with Frenkel pair defect production and several microstructural scenarios, with matching agreement found.

The dependence of initial magnetic permeability μi of based on the Fe-Si-B amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys on the γ-irradiation dose was investigated by the method of inductance factor determination. It was determined that the alloying of amorphous Fe-Si-B alloys by nickel and molybdenum increases the radiation sensitivity of the μi. Initial magnetic permeability of nanocrystalline magnetic alloys is less sensitive to the action of γ-irradiation as compared with the alloyed amorphous alloys. Has been suggested that radiation influence on the initial magnetic permeability are caused by cre…
In this work, a multiscale approach based on phase field was developed to simulate the microstructure's evolution under irradiation in binary systems, from atomic to microstructural scale. For that purpose, an efficient numerical scheme was developed. In the case of AgCu alloy under Krypton ions irradiation, phenomenological parameters were computed using atomistic methods, as a function of the temperature and the irradiation flux. As a result, we predicted the influence of the irradiation flux and the temperature on the formation of patterned microstructures. In the case of AgCu, our model wa…
After irradiation of Fe-Cr alloys of low purity (model alloys of F-M steels), minor solute elements as P, Ni and Si have been shown to create solute clusters which significantly contribute to hardening and might be associated with small dislocation loops. In order to understand the role of each impurity on the formation of the nano-features formed under irradiation and the eventual synergies between the different species, Fe-15at.%Cr-X (X=Si, Ni, P, NiSiP) alloys of different composition have been ion irradiated and characterized using atom probe tomography. Irradiation were performed at 300 {…
Irradiation effects in Ni-17Mo-7Cr alloy, which is an newly developed structural material for molten salt reactor (MSR), have been systematically investigated by using 3MeV Au ions at different fluences, corresponding to dpa number (displacement per atom) of 1~ 30. GIXRD measurement indicates that the microstrain of the irradiated samples increased from 0.14% to 0.22% as dpa increased from 1 to 30. In the meanwhile, nanoindentation results reveal the Ni-17Mo-7Cr alloy underwent radiation-induced hardening first and then softening at dpa of 30. The swelling rate of Ni-17Mo-7Cr alloy was found a…
One of the challenges in fusion reactors is the discovery of plasma facing materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions, such as radiation damage and high heat flux. Development of fusion materials can be a daunting task since vast combinations of microstructures and compositions need to be explored, each of which requires trial-and-error based irradiation experiments and materials characterizations. Here, we utilize combinatorial experiments that allow rapid and systematic characterizations of composition-microstructure dependent irradiation damage behaviors of nanostructured tungsten…
We study order transitions and defect formation in a model high-entropy alloy (CuNiCoFe) under ion irradiation by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Using a hybrid Monte-Carlo/molecular dynamics scheme a model alloy is generated which is thermodynamically stabilized by configurational entropy at elevated temperatures, but partly decomposes at lower temperatures by copper precipation. Both the high-entropy and the multiphase sample are then subjected to simulated particle irradiation. The damage accumulation is analyzed and compared to an elemental Ni reference system. The results reveal …
The model of homogeneous semicoherent interphase boundary describes the processes of absorption and thermoactivated migration of irradiation-produced inequilibrium point defects at a semicoherent boundary between a heterophase precipitate and a substitution solid solution. Within this model the kinetics of evolution of the sizes of precipitates of constant chemical composition under irradiation is investigated. The results obtained are compared to the experimental data [I. Monnet et al., J. Nucl. Mater. 335 (2004) 311] for the ferritic ODS steel EM10+MgO under electron irradiation.
Pure Fe and model Fe-Cr alloys containing 5, 10 and 14%Cr were irradiated with Fe+ ions at a maximum energy of 2MeV to the same dose of 0.6dpa at temperatures of 300 C, 400 C and 500 C, and at dose rates corresponding to 6 x 10-4 dpa/s and 3 x 10-5 dpa/s. All materials exhibited an increase in hardness after irradiation at 300 C. After irradiation at 400 C, hardening was observed only in Fe-Cr alloys, and not in the pure Fe. After irradiation at 500 C, no hardening was observed in any of the materials tested. For irradiations at both 300 C and 400 C, greater hardening was found in the Fe-Cr al…

Different techniques of the X-ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis (XRDLPA) have been used to assess the microstructure of the irradiated Zr-1.0%Nb-1.0%Sn-0.1%Fe alloy. The domain size, microstrain, density of dislocation and the stacking fault probabilities of the irradiated alloy have been estimated as a function of dose by the Williamson-Hall Technique, Modified Rietveld Analysis and the Double Voigt Method. A clear signature in the increase in the density of dislocation with the dose of irradiated was revealed. The analysis also estimated the average density of dislocation in the major sl…
Combining He ion irradiation and thermal mobility below 600K, we both trigger and control the transformation from chemical disorder to order in thin films of an intermetallic ferromagnet (FePd). Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show how the initial directional short range order determines order propagation. Magnetic ordering perpendicular to the film plane was achieved, promoting the initially weak magnetic anisotropy to the highest values known for FePd films. This post-growth treatment should find applications in ultrahigh density magnetic recording.
In this paper, the Fe-20Ni-25Cr alloy that is used for fuel cladding or pressure vessels with various grain boundaries (GBs) was investigated by employing molecular dynamics simulations. The bi-crystals comprised of Σ3(111), Σ3(112), Σ9(114), Σ11(113), Σ19(116), and Σ17(223) types GBs were considered to systematically examine the interplay between irradiation defects, irradiation microstructure evolution under stress, and irradiation mechanical properties with irradiation intensity, coincidence site lattice parameter, tilt angle, and GB thickness. It is found that irradiated vacancies and inte…
The energy position of the optical absorption edge and the free carrier populations in InxGa1-xN ternary alloys can be controlled using high energy 4He+ irradiation. The blue shift of the absorption edge after irradiation in In-rich material (x > 0.34) is attributed to the band-filling effect (Burstein-Moss shift) due to the native donors introduced by the irradiation. In Ga-rich material, optical absorption measurements show that the irradiation-introduced native defects are inside the bandgap, where they are incorporated as acceptors. The observed irradiation-produced changes in the optical …
A relative contribution to irradiation hardening caused by dislocation loops and solute-rich precipitates is established for RPV steels of WWER-440 and WWER-1000 reactors, based on TEM measurements and mechanical testing at reactor operating temperature of 563 K. The pinning strength factors evaluated for loops and precipitates are shown to be much lower than those obtained for model alloys based on the room temperature testing as well as those evaluated by means of atomistic simulations in the temperature range of 300 to 600 K. This discrepancy is explained in the framework of a model of ther…
The effect of He-ion irradiation on a short-range ordering in model Fe100-xCrx (x=5.8, 10.75, 15.15) was studied by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The alloys were irradiated to the dose of 7.5 dpa with ions of 0.25 and 2.0 MeV. The short-range order was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley parameters: alpha1 (for the first nearest-neighbor shell), alpha2 (for the second nearest-neighbor shell) and alpha12 (for both shells). For all alloys and both energies a clustering of Cr atoms was revealed, as far as alpha1 and alpha2 are considered, yet its degree was found to be…
Radiation-enhanced precipitation of Cr-rich α' in irradiated Fe-Cr alloys, which results in hardening and embrittlement, depends on the irradiating particle and the displacement per atom (dpa) rate. Here, we utilize a Cahn-Hilliard phase-field based approach, that includes simple models for nucleation, irradiating particle and rate dependent radiation-enhanced diffusion and cascade mixing to simulate α' evolution under neutrons, heavy ions, and electron irradiations. Different irradiating particles manifest very different cascade mixing efficiencies. The model was calibrated using neutron data…
Redistribution of Cr atoms in a Fe85Cr15 alloy caused by its irradiation with 250 keV He ions to different doses viz. 5, 10 and 30 dpa was investigated by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The redistribution was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley short-range order parameters alpha1, alpha2 and alpha12 pertaining to the first, second and both neighbor shells, respectively. Clear evidence was found, both for non-irradiated and irradiated samples that the actual distribution of Cr atoms is characteristic of the shell, and for a given shell it depends on the irradiation do…
Effect of He ion irradiation on three model Fe(100-x)Cr(x) alloys (x =5.8, 10.75 and 15.15) was investigated with the conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The study of the alloys irradiated with 25 keV ions revealed that the strongest effect occured in the Fe(84.85)Cr(15.15) sample where an inversion of a short-range-order (SRO) parameter was found. Consequently, the investigation of the influence of the irradiation dose, D, was carried out on the chromium-most concentrated sample showing that the average hyperfine field, <B>, the average angle between the normal to the sample's surface…
In this paper, we investigate plasticity in irradiated FeCrAl nanopillars using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD), with comparisons to transmission electron microscopic (TEM) in situ tensile tests of ion and neutron irradiated commercial FeCrAl alloy C35M. The effects of irradiation-induced defects, such as a/2 111 and a 100 type loops and composition fluctuations representative of phase separation in irradiated FeCrAl alloys, are investigated separately as well as superposed together in simulations. We explore the effects of defects on the stress-strain behavior, specifically yi…
In the quest of new materials that can withstand severe irradiation and mechanical extremes for advanced applications (e.g. fission reactors, fusion devices, space applications, etc), design, prediction and control of advanced materials beyond current material designs become a paramount goal. Here, though a combined experimental and simulation methodology, the design of a new nanocrystalline refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) system is established. Compositions of this alloy, assessed under extreme environments and in situ electron-microscopy, revealed both high mechanical strength and therm…
Neutron irradiation induces in steels nanostructural changes, which are at the origin of the mechanical degradation that these materials experience during operation in nuclear power plants. Some of these effects can be studied by using as model alloy the iron-carbon system. The Object Kinetic Monte Carlo technique has proven capable of simulating in a realistic and quantitatively reliable way a whole irradiation process. We have developed a model for simulating Fe-C systems using a physical description of the properties of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) clusters, based on a selection…
Mn-Ni-Si precipitates (MNSPs) are known to be responsible for irradiation-induced hardening and embrittlement in structural alloys used in nuclear reactors. Studies have shown that precipitation of the MNSPs in 9-Cr ferritic-martensitic (F-M) alloys, such as T91, is strongly associated with heterogeneous nucleation on dislocations, coupled with radiation-induced solute segregation to these sinks. Therefore it is important to develop advanced predictive models for Mn-Ni-Si precipitation in F-M alloys under irradiation based on an understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Here we use a cluster…

The effects of ionizing radiation on materials often reduce to "bad news." Radiation damage usually leads to detrimental effects such as embrittlement, accelerated creep, phase instability, and radiation-altered corrosion. This last point merits special attention. Elucidating synergies between radiation and corrosion has been one of the most challenging tasks impeding the deployment of advanced reactors, stemming from the combined effects of high temperature, corrosive coolants, and intense particle fluxes. Here we report that proton irradiation significantly and repeatably decelerates intergr…

The effect of He+ ion irradiation on a distribution of Cr atoms in model (EFDA) Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x=5.8, 10.75, 15.15) was studied by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The alloys were irradiated to the dose of 1.2E16 ions per cm2 (7.5 dpa) with He+ of 0.25 and 2.0 MeV. The distribution of Cr atoms within the first two coordination shells around the probe Fe atoms was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley short-range order parameters alpha1 (first-neighbour shell, 1NN), alpha2 (second-neighbour shell, 2NN) and alpha12 (1NN+2NN. In non-irradiated alloys alpha1 was positive an…
We present a theoretical approach exhaustively predicting the variety of steady-state shapes emerging under irradiation in thermodynamically unstable binary mixtures. We show that stripes or honeycomb structures are controlled not only by the two classical irradiation parameters: the irradiation flux and the temperature, but also by the nominal composition of the mixture. A rationale is thereby established for the results found in the literature. Moreover, the present developments lead to a simple methodology for predicting irradiation patterning without solving any evolution equation. It is f…

Predicting volume swelling of structural materials in nuclear reactors under high-dose neutron irradiations based on existing low-dose experiments or irradiation data with high-dose-rate energetic particles has been a long-standing challenge for safety evaluation and rapidly screening irradiation-resistant materials in nuclear energy systems. Here, we build an Additional Defect Absorption Model that describes the irradiation-induced swelling effects produced by energetic electrons, heavy-ions, and neutrons by considering additional defect sinks inherent in the irradiation process. Based on thi…
Iron-chromium forms the basis of most of the stainless steel grades in the markets. Recently new insights into the physical and chemical properties of Fe-Cr based alloys have been obtained. Some of the new results are quite unexpected and call for further investigations. The present study addresses the magnetic contribution in the atomic driving forces behind the chemical composition in Fe-Cr alloyed with Al, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, and Mo. Using the ab initio exact muffin-tin orbitals method and an Ising-type spin model, it is found that the magnetic moment of the solute atom combined with the ind…
In this work we develop an ab initio informed rate theory model to track the spatial and temporal evolution of implanted ions (Cr+) in Fe and Fe-14%Cr during high dose irradiation. We focus on the influence of the specimen surface, the depth dependence of ion-induced damage, the damage rate, and the consequences of ion implantation, all of which influence the depth dependence of alloy composition evolving with continued irradiation. We investigate chemical segregation effects in the material by considering the diffusion of the irradiation-induced defects. Moreover, we explore how temperature, …
Defects formed under irradiation in the bulk act as additional pinning centers resulting in the well-known effect of radiation-induced hardening. On the other hand, there is a poorly understood but well-established effect of instant and reversible softening of metals subjected to various types of irradiation. This radiation-induced softening (RIS) effect should be taken into account both in the theory of radiation effects and in the engineering approach for technological applications. In the present paper, the RIS is investigated experimentally in polycrystalline technically pure iron (0.048%C…
Neutron irradiation tends to promote disorder in ordered alloys through the action of the thermal spikes that it generates, while simultaneously introducing point defects and defect clusters. As they migrate, these point defects will promote reordering of the alloys, acting against irradiation-induced disordering. In this study, classical molecular dynamics and a highly parallel accelerated sampling method are used to study the reordering kinetics of Ni$_3$Al under the diffusion of self-interstitial atoms (SIA). By monitoring the order parameter and potential energy from atomistic simulations,…
Two new refractory amorphous high-entropy alloys (RAHEAs) within the W--Ta--Cr--V and W--Ta--Cr--V--Hf systems were herein synthesized using magnetron-sputtering and tested under high-temperature annealing and displacing irradiation using \textit{in situ} Transmission Electron Microscopy. While the WTaCrV RAHEA was found to be unstable under such tests, additions of Hf in this system composing a new quinary WTaCrVHf RAHEA was found to be a route to achieve stability both under annealing and irradiation. A new effect of nanoprecipitate reassembling observed to take place within the WTaCrVHf RAH…
Dislocations can climb out of their glide plane by absorbing (or emitting) point defects (vacancies and self-interstitial atoms (SIAs)). In contrast with conservative glide motion, climb relies on the point defects' thermal diffusion and hence operates on much longer timescales, leading to some forms of creep. Whilst equilibrium point defect concentrations allow dislocations to climb to relieve non-glide stresses, point defect supersaturations also lead to osmotic forces, driving dislocation motion even in the absence of external stresses. Self-interstitial atoms typically have significantly h…
This paper continues our previous work on a nanostructural evolution model for Fe-C alloys under irradiation, using Object Kinetic Monte Carlo modeling techniques. We here present a number of sensitivity studies of parameters of the model, such as the carbon content in the material, represented by generic traps for point defects, the importance of traps, the size dependence of traps and the effect of the dose rate.
Understanding ballistic effects caused by ion beam irradiation, and linking them with induced structure can be a key point for controlling and predicting the microstructure of irradiated materials. For this purpose, we have investigated ballistic effects from an ion mixing formalism point of view. The displacement cascades in copper and AgCu alloy were obtained using binary collision approximation (BCA) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We employed BCA-based code MARLOWE for its ability to simulate high energy displacement cascades. A first set of simulations was performed using both me…
This work extends our Object Kinetic Monte Carlo model for neutron irradiation-induced nanostructure evolution in Fe-C alloys to consider higher irradiation temperatures. Here we study the evolution of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) cluster populations at the operational temperature of light water reactors, by simulating specific reference irradiation experiments. Following our previous study, the effect of carbon on radiation defect evolution can be described in terms of formation of immobile complexes with vacanci…

Accurately quantifying swelling of alloys that have undergone irradiation is essential for understanding alloy performance in a nuclear reactor and critical for the safe and reliable operation of reactor facilities. However, typical practice is for radiation-induced defects in electron microscopy images of alloys to be manually quantified by domain-expert researchers. Here, we employ an end-to-end deep learning approach using the Mask Regional Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN) model to detect and quantify nanoscale cavities in irradiated alloys. We have assembled the largest database o…
Due to their high strength and advantageous high-temperature properties, tungsten-based alloys are being considered as plasma-facing candidate materials in fusion devices. Under neutron irradiation, rhenium, which is produced by nuclear transmutation, has been found to precipitate in elongated precipitates forming thermodynamic intermetallic phases at concentrations well below the solubility limit. Recent measurements have shown that Re precipitation can lead to substantial hardening, which may have a detrimental effect on the fracture toughness of W alloys. This puzzle of sub-solubility preci…
Ion irradiation during film growth has a strong impact on structural properties. Linear stability analysis is employed to study surface instabilities during ion-assisted growth of binary alloys. An interplay between curvature-dependent ion-driven and deposition-driven instabilities is investigated. We demonstrate that ion irradiation of growing binary alloys leads to the formation of composition-modulated surface patterns. It is shown that the ion-to-atom arrival ratio R is the pattern control parameter. Close to the instability threshold we identify different regimes of instabilities driven b…
AlGaN plays a vital role in hetero-structure high electron mobility transistor by employing a two-dimensional electron gas and as electron blocking layer in the multi quantum well light emitting diodes. Nevertheless, the incorporation of Al in GaN for the formation of AlGaN alloy is limited by the diffusion barrier formed by instant nitridation of Al adatoms by reactive atomic N. Incorporation of Al above the miscibility limit, however can be achieved by ion beam technique. The well known ion beam mixing (IBM) technique was carried out with the help of Ar+ irradiation for different fluences. A…
The success of the "Cluster Variation Method" (CVM) in reproducing quite accurately the free energies of Monte Carlo (MC) calculations on Ising models is explained in terms of identifying a cancellation of errors: We show that the CVM produces correlation functions that are too close to zero, which leads to an overestimation of the exact energy, E, and at the same time, to an underestimation of -TS, so the free energy F=E-TS is more accurate than either of its parts. This insight explains a problem with "hybrid methods" using MC correlation functions in the CVM entropy expression: They give ex…
Physical properties of alloys are compared as computed from ``direct'' and ``inverse'' procedures. The direct procedure involves Monte Carlo simulations of a set of local density approximation (LDA)-derived pair and multibody interactions {ν_f}, generating short-range order (SRO), ground states, order- disorder transition temperatures, and structural energy differences. The inverse procedure involves ``inverting'' the SRO generated from {ν_f} via inverse-Monte-Carlo to obtain a set of pair only interactions {\tildeν_f}. The physical properties generated from {\tildeν_f} are then compared with …
The occurrence of segregation in highly dilute alloys under irradiation is an unusual phenomenon that has so far eluded theoretical explanation. Using ab initio calculations, we are able to explain the origin of radiation-induced rhenium segregation in dilute tungsten-rhenium alloys.
NbSe$_{2}$ and NbS$_{2}$ are isostructural two-dimensional materials that exhibit contrasting superconducting properties when reduced to the single monolayer limit. Monolayer NbSe$_{2}$ is an Ising superconductor, while there have been no reports of superconductivity in monolayer NbS$_{2}$. NbS$_{x}$Se$_{2-x}$ alloys exhibit an intriguing non-monotonic dependence of the superconducting transition temperature with sulfur content, which has been interpreted as a manifestation of fractal superconductivity. However, several key questions about this result are not known: (1) Does the electronic str…
