This contribution reviews the effects of source heterogeneities, melt-rock reactions and intracrustal differentiation on magma chemistry across mid-ocean ridges, intraplate settings and subduction zones using experimental studies and natural data. We compare melting behaviors of pyroxenites and peridotites and their relative contributions to magmas as functions of composition, mantle potential temperatures and lithospheric thickness. We also discuss the fate of chemically distinct melts derived from heterogeneities as they travel through a peridotitic mantle. Using nearly 60,000 natural major element compositions of volcanic rocks, melt inclusions, and crystalline cumulates, we assess broad petrogenetic trends in as large of a global dataset as possible. Consistent with previous studies, major element chemistry of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) and their cumulates favor a first-order control of intracrustal crystal-liquid segregation, while trace element studies emphasize the role of melt-rock reactions, highlighting the decoupling between the two. Ocean island basalts (OIB) show a larger compositional variability than MORB, partly attributed to large variations of pyroxenite proportions in the mantle source. However, the estimated proportions vary considerably with heterogeneity composition, melting model and thermal structure of the mantle. For arcs, we highlight current views on the role of the downgoing slab into the source of primary arc magmas, and the role of the overriding lithosphere as a magmatic chemical filter and as the repository of voluminous arc cumulates. Our approach of simultaneously looking at a large database of volcanic + deep crustal rocks across diverse tectonic settings underscores the challenge of deciphering the source signal versus intracrustal/lithospheric processes.
Explosive eruptions are the surface manifestation of dynamics that involve transfer of magma from the underground regions of magma accumulation. Evidence of the involvement of compositionally different magmas from different reservoirs is continuously increasing to countless cases. Yet, models of eruption dynamics consider only the uppermost portion of the plumbing system, neglecting connections to deeper regions of magma storage. Here we show that the extent and efficiency of the interconnections between different magma storage regions largely control the size of the eruptions, their evolution…
To understand the evolution of the Moon, we numerically modeled mantle convection and magmatism in a two-dimensional polar rectangular mantle. Magmatism occurs as an upward permeable flow of magma generated by decompression melting through the convecting matrix. The mantle is assumed to be initially enriched in heat-producing elements (HPEs) and compositionally dense ilmenite-bearing cumulates (IBC) at its base. Here, we newly show that magma generation and migration play a crucial role in the calculated volcanic and radial expansion/contraction history. Magma is generated in the deep mantle b…
The process of lunar magma ocean solidification provides constraints on the properties of distinct chemical reservoirs in the lunar mantle that formed during the early evolution of the Moon. We use a combination of phase equilibria models consistent with experimental results on lunar magma ocean crystallization to study the effect of bulk silicate Moon composition on the properties of lunar mantle reservoirs. We find that the densities and relative proportions of these mantle reservoirs, in particular of the late forming ilmenite bearing cumulates (IBC), strongly depend on the FeO content of t…
Solid-Liquid Phase Transition As a Mechanism of Volcano Eruption
Many open problems in the Earth sciences can only be understood by modelling the porous flow of melt through a viscously deforming solid rock matrix. However, the system of equations describing this process becomes mathematically degenerate in the limit of vanishing melt fraction. Numerical methods that do not consider this degeneracy or avoid it solely by regularising specific material properties generally become computationally expensive as soon as the melt fraction approaches zero in some part of the domain. Here, we present a new formulation of the equations for coupled magma/mantle dynami…
Magmatic segregation and volcanic eruptions transport tidal heat from Io's interior to its surface. Several observed eruptions appear to be extremely high temperature ($\geq$ 1600 K), suggesting either very high degrees of melting, refractory source regions, or large amounts of viscous heating on ascent. To address this ambiguity, we develop a model that couples crust and mantle dynamics to a simple compositional system. We analyse the model to investigate chemical structure and evolution. We demonstrate that magmatic segregation and volcanic eruptions lead to differentiation of the mantle, th…

The magma ocean period was a critical phase determining how Earth atmosphere developed into habitability. However there are major uncertainties in the role of key processes such as outgassing from the planetary interior and escape of species to space that play a major role in determining the atmosphere of early Earth. We investigate the influence of outgassing of various species and escape of H$_2$ for different mantle redox states upon the composition and evolution of the atmosphere for the magma ocean period. We include an important new atmosphere-interior coupling mechanism namely the redox…
Internal redox reactions may irreversibly alter the mantle composition and volatile inventory of terrestrial and super-Earth exoplanets and affect the prospects for atmospheric observations. The global efficacy of these mechanisms, however, hinges on the transfer of reduced iron from the molten silicate mantle to the metal core. Scaling analysis indicates that turbulent diffusion in the internal magma oceans of sub-Neptunes can kinetically entrain liquid iron droplets and quench core formation. This suggests that the chemical equilibration between core, mantle, and atmosphere may be energetica…
A correct description and quantification of the geochemical behaviour of REE+Y (rare earth elements and Y) and HFSE (high field strength elements) is a key requirement for modelling petrological and volcanological aspects of magma dynamics. In this context, mafic alkaline magmas (MAM) are characterized by the ubiquitous stability of clinopyroxene from mantle depths to shallow crustal levels. On one hand, clinopyroxene incorporates REE+Y/HFSE at concentration levels that are much higher than those measured for olivine, plagioclase, and magnetite. On the other hand, the composition of clinopyrox…
The mixing of magmas is a fundamental process in the Earth system causing extreme compositional variations in igneous rocks. This process can develop with different intensities both in space and time, making the interpretation of compositional patterns in igneous rocks a petrological challenge. As a time-dependent process, magma mixing has been suggested to preserve information about the time elapsed between the injection of a new magma into sub-volcanic magma chambers and eruptions. This allowed the use of magma mixing as an additional volcanological tool to infer the mixing-to-eruption times…
Io, the most volcanically active body in the solar system, loses heat through eruptions of hot lava. Heat is supplied by tidal heating and is thought to be transferred through the mantle by magmatic segregation, a mode of transport that sets it apart from convecting terrestrial planets. We present a model that couples magmatic transport of tidal heat to the volcanic system in the crust, in order to determine the controls on crustal thickness, magmatic intrusions, and eruption rates. We demonstrate that magmatic intrusions are a key component of Io's crustal heat balance; around 80% of the magm…
The cellular automaton model of Piegari, Di Maio, Scandone and Milano, J. Volc. Geoth. Res., 202, 22-28 (2011) is extended to include magma-induced stress (i.e. a local magma-related augmentation of the stress field). This constitutes a nonlinear coupling between the magma and stress fields considered by this model, which affects the statistical distributions of eruptions obtained. The extended model retains a power law relation between eruption size and frequency for most events, as expected from the self organised criticality inspiring this model; but the power law now applies for a reduced …
Earth's mantle nitrogen (N) content is comparable to that found in its N-rich atmosphere. Mantle N has been proposed to be primordial or sourced by later subduction, yet its origin has not been elucidated. Here we model N partitioning during the magma ocean stage following planet formation and the subsequent cycling between the surface and mantle over Earth history using argon (Ar) and N isotopes as tracers. The partitioning model, constrained by Ar, shows that only about 10% of the total N content can be trapped in the solidified mantle due to N's low solubility in magma and low partitioning …
Volcanic gases supplied a large part of Earth's early atmosphere, but constraints on their flux are scarce. Here we model how C-O-H outgassing could have evolved through the late Hadean and early Archean, under the conditions that global plate tectonics had not yet initiated, all outgassing was subaerial, and graphite was the stable carbon phase in the melt source regions. The model fully couples numerical mantle convection, partitioning of volatiles into the melt, and chemical speciation in the gas phase. The mantle oxidation state (which may not have reached late Archean values in the Hadean…
Partial melting of asthenospheric mantle generates magma that supplies volcanic systems. The timescale of melt extraction from the mantle has been hotly debated. Microstructural measurements of permeability typically suggest relatively slow melt extraction (1 m/yr) whereas geochemical (Uranium-decay series) and geophysical observations suggest much faster melt extraction (100 m/yr). The deglaciation of Iceland triggered additional mantle melting and magma flux at the surface. The rapid response has been used to argue for relatively rapid melt extraction. However, this episode must, at least to…
The most abundant terrestrial lavas, mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalt (MORB and OIB), are commonly considered to be derived from a depleted MORB-mantle component and more specific, variably enriched mantle plume sources. However, findings of oceanic lavas and mafic cumulates issued from melts, enriched in chlorine and having a radiogenic Sr ratio, can be attributed to an interaction between the asthenosphere-derived melts and lithospheric peridotite variably hydrated due to penetration of hydrothermal water down to and below Moho level. To constrain mechanisms and rates responsible for …
The Campi Flegrei caldera (southern Italy) is one of the most hazardous volcanic systems on Earth, having produced >60 eruptions in the past 15 ka. The caldera remains active and its potential for future eruptions is high, posing a danger to the dense population living nearby. Despite this, our understanding of pre-eruptive processes and the architecture of the sub-volcanic system are poorly constrained. Here, we combine established petrological techniques, geothermobarometric evaluation, and high resolution trace element crystal mapping, to present a multifaceted, coherent reconstruction of t…
As the magma ascends from its depth of generation to the surface, it is often stored in a series of chambers along the way. The rheological contrast between the viscous magma in the magmatic chambers and the surrounding rocks disturbed the stress field which can give rise to various modes of rock failure at magmatic pressures less than the lithostatic stress, leading to an eruption. Different modes of mechanical failure of the chamber walls are considered depending on the geometry and the sign the relative pressure. Relaxation of viscous stress around magmatic chambers, which is important on t…
Deep-Earth volatile cycles couple the mantle with near-surface reservoirs. Volatiles are emitted by volcanism and, in particular, from mid-ocean ridges, which are the most prolific source of basaltic volcanism. Estimates of volatile extraction from the asthenosphere beneath ridges typically rely on measurements of undegassed lavas combined with simple petrogenetic models of the mean degree of melting. Estimated volatile fluxes have large uncertainties; this is partly due to a poor understanding of how volatiles are transported by magma in the asthenosphere. Here, we assess the fate of mantle v…

A theoretical model that describes the evolution of a suspension in which crystals can sediment to form a dense cumulate or may produce a light flotation crust has been derived in a companion paper. We use this model to study the thermal history of early accreted planetary bodies accreted during the very early stages of the formation of the solar system. We study the conditions required to form and preserve flotation crusts and basal cumulates, and the implications for the thermal evolution of planetesimals. We calculate the temperature evolution in an early accreted planetesimals internally h…
It is generally accepted that melt extraction from the mantle at mid-ocean ridges (MORs) is concentrated in narrow regions of elevated melt fraction called channels. Two feedback mechanisms have been proposed to explain why these channels grow by linear instability: shear flow of partially molten mantle and reactive flow of the ascending magma. These two mechanisms have been studied extensively, in isolation from each other, through theory and laboratory experiments as well as field and geophysical observations. Here, we develop a consistent theory that accounts for both proposed mechanisms an…
Melting beneath mid-ocean ridges occurs over a region that is much broader than the zone of magmatic emplacement to form the oceanic crust. Magma is focused into this zone by lateral transport. This focusing has typically been explained by dynamic pressure gradients associated with corner flow, or by a sub-lithospheric channel sloping upward toward the ridge axis. Here we discuss a novel mechanism for magmatic focusing: lateral transport driven by gradients in compaction pressure within the asthenosphere. These gradients arise from the co-variation of melting rate and compaction viscosity. The…
Astronomers have discovered a handful of exoplanets with rocky bulk compositions but orbiting so close to their host star that the surface of the planet must be at least partially molten. It is expected that the dayside of such "lava planets" harbors a rock vapor atmosphere that flows quickly towards the airless nightside -- this partial atmosphere is critical to the interpretation of lava planet observations, but transports negligible heat towards the nightside. As a result, the surface temperature of the magma ocean may range from 3000~K near the sub-stellar point down to 1500~K near the day…
Experimental studies of mantle petrology find that small concentrations of water and carbon dioxide have a large effect on the solidus temperature and distribution of melting in the upper mantle. However, it has remained unclear what effect small fractions of deep, volatile-rich melts have on melt transport and reactive melting in the shallow asthenosphere. Here we present theory and computations indicating that low-degree, reactive, volatile-rich melts cause channelisation of magmatic flow at depths approximately corresponding to the anhydrous solidus temperature. These results are obtained w…
The observed variability of trace-element concentration in basaltic lavas and melt inclusions carries information about heterogeneity in the mantle. The difficulty is to disentangle the contributions of source heterogeneity (i.e., spatial variability of mantle composition before melting) and process heterogeneity (i.e., spatial and temporal variability in melt transport). Here we investigate the end-member hypothesis that variability arises due to source heterogeneity alone. We model the attenuation of trace-element variability introduced into the bottom of a one-dimensional, steady-state melt…
The initial reports of the presence of phosphine in the cloud decks of Venus has led to the suggestion that volcanism was the source of phosphine, through volcanic phosphides ejected into the clouds. Here we examine the idea that mantle plume volcanism, bringing material from the deep mantle to the surface, could generate observed amounts of phosphine through interaction of explosively erupted phosphide with sulfuric acid clouds. Direct eruption of deep mantle phosphide is unphysical, but shallower material could contain traces of phosphide, and could be erupted to the surface. Explosive erupt…

The earliest atmospheres of rocky planets originate from extensive volatile release during magma ocean epochs that occur during assembly of the planet. These establish the initial distribution of the major volatile elements between different chemical reservoirs that subsequently evolve via geological cycles. Current theoretical techniques are limited in exploring the anticipated range of compositional and thermal scenarios of early planetary evolution, even though these are of prime importance to aid astronomical inferences on the environmental context and geological history of extrasolar plan…
Rocky planetesimals in the early solar system melted internally and evolved chemically due to radiogenic heating from Al-26. Here we quantify the parametric controls on magma genesis and transport using a coupled petrological and fluid mechanical model of reactive two-phase flow. We find the mean grain size of silicate minerals to be a key control on magma ascent. For grain sizes larger than $\approx$ 1 mm, melt segregation produces distinct radial structure and chemical stratification. This stratification is most pronounced for bodies formed at around 1 Myr after formation of Ca,Al-rich inclu…

Earth's surface environment is largely influenced by its budget of major volatile elements: carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H). Although the volatiles on Earth are thought to have been delivered by chondritic materials, the elemental composition of the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) shows depletion in the order of N, C, and H. Previous studies have concluded that non-chondritic materials are needed for this depletion pattern. Here, we model the evolution of the volatile abundances in the atmosphere, oceans, crust, mantle, and core through the accretion history by considering elemental parti…
Here, we provide a reappraisal of potential LLSVPs compositions based on an improved mineralogical model including, for instance, the effects of alumina. We also systematically investigate the effects of six parameters: FeO and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ content, proportion of CaSiO$_{3}$ and bridgmanite (so that the proportion of ferropericlase is implicitly investigated), Fe$^{3+}$/$\sum$Fe and temperature contrast between far-field mantle and LLSVPs. From the 81 millions cases studied, only 79000 cases explain the seismic observations. Nevertheless, these successful cases involve a large range of para…

Highly volcanic exoplanets, which can be variously characterized as 'lava worlds', 'magma ocean worlds', or 'super-Ios' are high priority targets for investigation. The term 'lava world' may refer to any planet with extensive surface lava lakes, while the term 'magma ocean world' refers to planets with global or hemispherical magma oceans at their surface. 'Highly volcanic planets', including super-Ios, may simply have large, or large numbers of, active explosive or extrusive volcanoes of any form. They are plausibly highly diverse, with magmatic processes across a wide range of compositions, …
To constrain a contribution of deep carbonated mantle, to fractionation of Hf relative to rare earth elements (REE) in volcanic series, we examine available high-quality data on major, trace element and Nd-Hf isotope compositions of primitive lavas and glasses erupted during preshield, postshield and mostly rejuvenated stage of the Hawaiian hot spot (Pacific Ocean). Strong variations of Hf/Sm, Zr/Sm, Ti/Eu, K/Th, Nb/Th, La/K and Ba/K in the lavas are not features of the melt equilibration with residual amphibole or phlogopite, and cannot be due to variable degrees of batch or dynamic melting o…
