Let $L=Δ-\nablaϕ\cdot \nabla$ be a symmetric diffusion operator with an invariant measure $μ({\rm} d x)=e^{-ϕ(x)}{\mathfrak m}({\rm d} x)$ on a complete non-compact smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with its volume element ${\mathfrak m}={\rm vol}_g$, and $ϕ\in C^2(M)$ a potential function. In this paper, we prove a Laplacian comparison theorem on weighted complete Riemannian manifolds with ${\rm CD}(K, m)$-condition for $m\leq 1$ and a continuous function $K$. As consequences, we give the optimal conditions on $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor for $m\leq1$ such that the (weighted) Myers' theorem, Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem, Ambrose-Myers' theorem, and the Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem, stochastic completeness and Feller property of $L$-diffusion processes hold on weighted complete Riemannian manifolds. Some of these results were well-studied for $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature for $m\geq n$ (\!\!\cite{Lot,Qian,XDLi05, WeiWylie}) or $m=1$ (\!\!\cite{Wylie:WarpedSplitting, WylieYeroshkin}). When $m<1$, our results are new in the literature.
We show that, on a smooth riemannian manifold, the laplacian of the distance function to a point $b$ is $-\infty$ in the sense of barriers, at every point of the cut locus with respect to $b$.
We establish lower bounds for the first non-zero eigenvalue for the natural geometric sub-elliptic Laplacian operator defined on sub-Riemannian manifolds of step 2 that satisfy a positive curvature condition. The methods are very general and can be applied even when the sub-Riemannian geometry has considerable torsion.
In this paper, we study a first Dirichlet eigenfunction of the weighted $p$-Laplacian on a bounded domain in a complete weighted Riemannian manifold. By constructing gradient estimates for a first eigenfunction, we obtain some relationships between weighted $p$-Laplacian first eigenvalues. As an immediate application, we also obtain some eigenvalue comparison results between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian, the first clamped plate eigenvalue and the first buckling eigenvalue.
For a bounded domain $Ω$ with a piecewise smooth boundary in a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, we study eigenvalues of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem of the Laplacian. By making use of a fact that eigenfunctions form an orthonormal basis of $L^2(Ω)$ in place of the Rayleigh-Ritz formula, we obtain inequalities for eigenvalues of the Laplacian. In particular, for lower order eigenvalues, our results extend the results of Chen and Cheng \cite{CC}.
We consider different sub-Laplacians on a sub-Riemannian manifold $M$. Namely, we compare different natural choices for such operators, and give conditions under which they coincide. One of these operators is a sub-Laplacian we constructed previously in \cite{GordinaLaetsch2014a}. This operator is canonical with respect to the horizontal Brownian motion, we are able to define the sub-Laplacian without some a priori choice of measure. The other operator is $\operatorname{div}^ω \operatorname{grad}_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some volume form $ω$ on $M$. We illustrate our results by examples of three Lie…
We study a Laplacian operator related to the characteristic cohomology of a smooth manifold endowed with a distribution. We prove that this Laplacian does not behave very well: it is not hypoelliptic in general and does not respect the bigrading on forms in a complex setting. We also discuss the consequences of these negative results for a conjecture of P. Griffiths, concerning the characteristic cohomology of period domains.
We show that any generalised smooth distribution on a smooth manifold, possibly of non-constant rank, admits a Riemannian metric. Using such a metric, we attach a Laplace operator to any smooth distribution as such. When the underlying manifold is compact, we show that it is essentially self-adjoint. Viewing this Laplacian in the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of the smallest singular foliation which includes the distribution, we prove hypoellipticity.
In this paper, energy function is used to investigate the eigen-solutions of $-Δu+ Vu=λu$ on the Riemannian manifolds. We give a new way to prove the positivity of the initial energy of energy function, which leads to a simple way to obtain the growth of eigen-solutions.
In this paper, we prove the Li-Yau type Harnack inequality and Hamilton type dimension free Harnack inequality for the heat equation $\partial_t u=Lu$ associated with the time dependent Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds equipped with a variant of the $(K, m)$-super Perelman Ricci flows and the $K$-super Perelman Ricci flows.
In this paper, we prove the Hamilton differential Harnack inequality for positive solutions to the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(-K, m)$-condition, where $m\in [n, \infty)$ and $K\geq 0$ are two constants. Moreover, we introduce the $W$-entropy and prove the $W$-entropy formula for the fundamental solution of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(-K, m)$-condition and on compact manifolds equipped with $(-K, m)$-super Ricci flows.
In this paper, we consider the eigen-solutions of $-Δu+ Vu=λu$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian on a non-compact complete Riemannian manifold. We develop Kato's methods on manifold and establish the growth of the eigen-solutions as $r$ goes to infinity based on the asymptotical behaviors of $Δr$ and $V(x)$, where $r=r(x)$ is the distance function on the manifold. As applications, we prove several criteria of absence of eigenvalues of Laplacian, including a new proof of the absence of eigenvalues embedded into the essential spectra of free Laplacian if the radial curvature of the manifold satisfies …
Based on ideas of Pigolla and Setti \cite{PS} we prove that immersed submanifolds with bounded mean curvature of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds are Feller. We also consider Riemannian submersions $π\colon M \to N$ with compact minimal fibers, and based on various criteria for parabolicity and stochastic completeness, see \cite{Grygor'yan}, we prove that $M$ is Feller, parabolic or stochastically complete if and only if the base $N$ is Feller, parabolic or stochastically complete respectively.
In this paper we study eigenvalues of the closed eigenvalue problem of the Witten-Laplacian on an $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. Estimates for eigenvalues are given. As applications, we give a sharp upper bound for the $k^{\text{th}}$ eigenvalue and for isoparametric minimal hypersurfaces in the unit sphere, an explicit upper bound of the $(n+3)^{\text{th}}$ eigenvalue of the Laplacian is obtained. Furthermore, we generalize the Reilly's result on the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian.
Let $(M,g)$ be an $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold ($n>1$) whose metric $g(t)$ evolves by the generalized abstract geometric flow. This paper discusses the evolution, monotonicity and differentiability for the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on $(M,g(t))$ with respect to time evolution. We prove that the first nonzero $p$-eigenvalue is monotone nondecreasing along the flow under certain geometric condition and that the first eigenvalue is differentiable almost everywhere. When $p=2$, we recover the corresponding results for the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator. Our results prov…
In this paper, we prove logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and derive the Hamilton Harnack inequality for the heat semigroup of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds equipped with $K$-super Perelman Ricci flow. We establish the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian and prove a rigidity theorem on complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the $CD(K, m)$ condition, and extend the $W$-entropy formula to time dependent Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with $(K, m)$-super Perelman Ricci flow, where $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $m\in [n, \infty]$ are…
We investigate the distribution of eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian on closed weighted Riemannian manifolds of nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. We derive some universal inequalities among eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian on such manifolds. These inequalities are quantitative versions of the previous theorem by the author with Shioya. We also study some geometric quantity, called multi-way isoperimetric constants, on such manifolds and obtain similar universal inequalities among them. Multi-way isoperimetric constants are generalizations of the Cheeger constant. Extending and …
Let $(M^n,g)$ be an $n$-dimensional compact connected Riemannian manifold with boundary. In this article, we study the effects of the presence of a nontrivial conformal vector field on $(M^n,g)$. We used the wekk-known de-Rham Laplace operator and a nontrivial solution of the famous Fischer-Marsden differential equation to provide two characterizations of the hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{+}(c)$ of constant curvature $c>0.$ As a consequence of the characterization using the Fischer-Marsden equation, we prove the cosmic no-hair conjecture under a given integral condition.
In this paper, we firstly consider Dirichlet eigenvalue problem which is related to Xin-Laplacian on the bounded domain of complete Riemannian manifolds. By establishing the general formulas, combining with some results of Chen and Cheng type, we prove some eigenvalue inequalities. As some applications, we consider the eigenvalues on some Riemannian manifolds admitting with special functions, the translating solitons, minimal submanifolds on the Euclidean spaces, submanifolds on the unit spheres, projective spaces and so on. In particular, for the case of translating solitons, some eigenvalue …
In this paper, we consider the non-linear general $p$-Laplacian equation $Δ_{p,f}u+F(u)=0$ for a smooth function $F$ on smooth metric measure spaces. Assume that a Sobolev inequality holds true on $M$ and an integral Ricci curvature is small, we first prove a local gradient estimate for the equation. Then, as its applications, we prove several Liouville type results on manifolds with lower bounds of Ricci curvature. We also derive new local gradient estimates provided that the integral Ricci curvature is small enough.
In this paper, we develop a new approach to prove the $W$-entropy formula for the Witten Laplacian via warped product on Riemannian manifolds and give a natural geometric interpretation of a quantity appeared in the $W$-entropy formula. Then we prove the $W$-entropy formula for the Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with time dependent metrics and potentials, and derive the $W$-entropy formula for the backward heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds equipped with Lott's modified Ricci flow. We also extend our results to complete Riemanni…
In this paper, we prove a Laplacian comparison theorem for non-symmetric diffusion operator on complete smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold having a lower bound of modified $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor under $m\leq 1$ in terms of vector fields. As consequences, we give the optimal conditions for modified $m$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor under $m\leq1$ such that the (weighted) Myers' theorem, Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem, Ambrose-Myers' theorem, Cheng's maximal diameter theorem, and the Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem hold. Some of these results were well-studied for $m$-Ba…
In this paper, we successfully generalize the eigenvalue comparison theorem for the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian ($1<p<\infty$) obtained by Matei [A.-M. Matei, First eigenvalue for the $p$-Laplace operator, Nonlinear Anal. TMA 39 (8) (2000) 1051--1068] and Takeuchi [H. Takeuchi, On the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian in a Riemannian manifold, Tokyo J. Math. 21 (1998) 135--140], respectively. Moreover, we use this generalized eigenvalue comparison theorem to get estimates for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian of geodesic balls on complete Riemannian manifolds with radial Ricc…
The theory of harmonic symmetric bilinear forms on a Riemannian manifold is an analogue of the theory of harmonic exterior differential forms on this manifold. To show this, we must consider every symmetric bilinear form on a Riemannian manifold as a one-form with values in the cotangent bundle of this manifold. In this case, there are the exterior differential and codifferential defined on the vector space of these differential one-forms. Then a symmetric bilinear form is said to be harmonic if it is closed and coclosed as a one-form with values in the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifol…
We present a general lower bound for the fundamental tone for the $p$-Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds carrying a special kind of function. We then apply our result to the cases of negatively curved simply connected manifolds, a class of warped product manifolds and for a class of Riemannian submersions.
An adapted version of the proof (due to A. Weil) of the well-known de Rham Theorem allows us to compare uniformly the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian acting on differential forms (on a compact Riemannian manifold) to the spectrum of the combinatorial Laplacian acting on cochains associated to an open cover (made of balls of sufficiently small radius). We exhibit then a lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the combinatorial Laplacian and deduce a lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Hodge Laplacian.
We study eigenvalue problems for intrinsic sub-Laplacians on regular sub-Riemannian manifolds. We prove upper bounds for sub-Laplacian eigenvalues $λ_k$ of conformal sub-Riemannian metrics that are asymptotically sharp as $k\to +\infty$. For Sasakian manifolds with a lower Ricci curvature bound, and more generally, for contact metric manifolds conformal to such Sasakian manifolds, we obtain eigenvalue inequalities that can be viewed as versions of the classical results by Korevaar and Buser in Riemannian geometry.
We prove $R$-bisectoriality and boundedness of the $H^\infty$-functional calculus in $L^p$ for all $1<p<\infty$ for the Hodge-Dirac operator associated with Witten Laplacians on complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature on $k$-forms.
We give a generalized curvature-dimension inequality connecting the geometry of sub-Riemannian manifolds with the properties of its sub-Laplacian. This inequality is valid on a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations. We give a geometric interpretation of the invariants involved in the inequality. Using this inequality, we obtain a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian. This inequality also lays the foundation for proving several powerful results in Part~II.
We study concentration phenomena of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on closed Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the volume measure of a closed manifold concentrates around nodal sets of eigenfunctions exponentially. Applying the method of Colding and Minicozzi we also prove restricted exponential concentration inequalities and restricted Sogge-type $L_p$ moment estimates of eigenfunctions.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold with metric $g$, $dμ=e^{-ϕ(x)}dν$ be the weighted measure and $Δ_{p,ϕ}$ be the weighted $p$-Laplacian. In this article we will investigate monotonicity for the first eigenvalue problem of the weighted $p$-Laplace operator acting on the space of functions along the Ricci-Bourguignon flow on closed Riemannian manifolds. We find the first variation formula for the eigenvalues of the weighted $p$-Laplacian on a closed Riemannian manifold evolving by the Ricci-Bourguignon flow and we obtain various monotonic quantities. At the end we find som…
We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.
Let M be a compact, connected, m-dimensional manifold without boundary and p>1. For 1<p\leq m, we prove that the first eigenvalue λ_{1,p} of the p-Laplacian is bounded on each conformal class of Riemannian metrics of volume one on M. For p>m, we show that any conformal class of Riemannian metrics on M contains metrics of volume one with λ_{1,p} arbitrarily large. As a consequence, we obtain that in two dimensions λ_{1,p} is uniformly bounded on the space of Riemannian metrics of volume one if 1<p\leq 2, respectively unbounded if p>2.
We develop a variational theory of geodesics for the canonical variation of the metric of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain comparison theorems for the horizontal and vertical Laplacians. In the case of Sasakian foliations, we show that sharp horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the sub-Riemannian distance may be obtained as a limit of horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the Riemannian distances approximations.
Let p: Z -> Y be a Riemannian V-submersion of compact V-manifolds. We study when the pull-back of an eigenform of the Laplacian on Y is an eigenform of the Laplacian on Z, and when the associated eigenvalue can change.
In this article, we prove Talenti's comparison theorem for Poisson equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Furthermore, we obtain the Faber-Krahn inequality for the first eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacian, $L^1$- and $L^\infty$-moment spectrum, especially Saint-Venant theorem for torsional rigidity and a reverse Hölder inequality for eigenfunctions of Dirichlet Laplacian.
Contact Riemannian manifolds, with not necessarily integrable complex structures, are the generalization of pseudohermitian manifolds in CR geometry. The Tanaka-Webster-Tanno connection on such a manifold plays the role of Tanaka-Webster connection in the pseudohermitian case. We prove the contact Riemannian version of the pseudohermitian Bochner-type formula, and generalize the CR Lichnerowicz theorem about the sharp lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian to the contact Riemannnian case.
We derive several new applications of the concept of sequences of Laplacian cut-off functions on Riemannian manifolds (which we prove to exist on geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature): In particular, we prove that this existence implies $\mathsf{L}^q$-estimates of the gradient, a new density result of smooth compactly supported functions in Sobolev spaces on the whole $\mathsf{L}^q$-scale, and a slightly weaker and slightly stronger variant of the conjecture of Braverman, Milatovic and Shubin on the nonnegativity of $\mathsf{L}^2$-solutions $f$ of $(-Δ+1)…
These notes are the basis of a course given at the Institut Henri Poincare in September 2014. We survey some recent results related to the geometric analysis of hypoelliptic diffusion operators on totally geodesic Riemannian foliations. We also give new applications to the study of hypocoercive estimates for Kolmogorov type operators.
In the present paper we prove Liouville-type theorems: non-existence theorems for some complete Riemannian almost product manifolds and special mappings of complete Riemannian manifolds which generalize similar results for compact manifolds.
We construct Riemannian manifolds with singular continuous spectrum embedded in the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Laplacian. Our manifolds are asymptotically hyperbolic with sharp curvature bounds.
Given a Finsler manifold $(M,F)$, it is proved that the first eigenvalue of the Finslerian $p$-Laplacian is bounded above by a constant depending on $\ p$, the dimension of $M$, the Busemann-Hausdorff volume and the reversibility constant of $(M,F)$. For a Randers manifold $(M,F:=\sqrt{g}+β)$, where $g$ is a Riemannian metric on $M$ and $β$ an appropriate $1$-form on $M$, it is shown that the first eigenvalue $λ_{1,p}(M,F)$ of the Finslerian $p$-Laplacian defined by the Finsler metric $F$ is controled by the first eigenvalue $λ_{1,p}(M,g)$ of the Riemannian $p$-Laplacian defined on $(M,g)$. Fi…
More than forty years ago J. H. Samson has defined the Laplacian $Δ_{sym}$ acting on the space of symmetric covariant $p$-tensors on an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. This operator is an analogue of the well known Hodge-de Rham Laplacian $Δ$ which acts on the space of exterior differential $p$-forms ($1 \le p \le n$) on $(M, g)$. In the present paper we will prove that for $n > p = 1$ the operator $Δ_{sym}$ is the Yano rough Laplacian and show its spectrum properties on a compact Riemannian manifold.
A Lie group as a 4-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold is considered. This manifold is equipped with an almost product structure and a Killing metric in two ways. In the first case Riemannian almost product manifold with nonintegrable structure is obtained, and in the second case - a pseudo-Riemannian one. Each belongs to a 4-parametric family of manifolds, which are characterized geometrically.
For a Riemannian closed spin manifold and under some topological assumption (non-zero $\hat{A}$-genus or enlargeability in the sense of Gromov-Lawson), we give an optimal upper bound for the infimum of the scalar curvature in terms of the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian. The main difficulty lies in the study of the odd-dimensional case. On the other hand, we study the equality case for the closed spin Riemannian manifolds with non-zero $\hat{A}$-genus. This work improves an inequality which was first proved by K. Ono in 1988.
A Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold is defined as an almost contact complex Riemannian manifold which complex cone is a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold. Explicit compact and non-compact examples are given. A canonical construction producing a Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold from a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold is presented and called an $S^1$-solvable extension.
The space forms, the complex hyperbolic spaces and the quaternionic hyperbolic spaces are characterized as the harmonic manifolds with specific radial eigenfunctions of the Laplacian.
A Riemannian almost product manifold with integrable almost product structure is called a Riemannian product manifold. In the present paper the natural connections on such manifolds are studied, i.e. the linear connections preserving the almost product structure and the Riemannian metric.
