We consider an elliptic equation with unbounded drift in an exterior domain, and obtain quantitative uniqueness estimates at infinity, i.e. the non-trivial solution of $-\triangle u+W\cdot\nabla u=0$ decays in the form of $\exp(-C|x|\log^2|x|)$ at infinity provided $\|W\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^2\setminus B_1)}\lesssim 1$, which is sharp with the help of some counterexamples. These results also generalize the decay theorem by Kenig-Wang \cite{KW2015} in the whole space. As an application, the asymptotic behavior of an incompressible fluid around a bounded obstacle is also considered. Specially for the two-dimensional case, we can improve the decay rate in \cite{KL2019} to $\exp(-C|x|\log^2|x|)$, where the minimal decaying rate of $\exp(-C|x|^{\frac32+})$ is obtained by Kow-Lin in a recent paper \cite{KL2019} by using appropriate Carleman estimates.
We prove unique existence of mild solutions on $L^{\infty}_σ$ for the Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain in $ \mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\geq 2$, subject to the non-slip boundary condition.
We identify the leading term describing the behavior at large distances of the steady state solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in 3D exterior domains with vanishing velocity at the spatial infinity.
We consider the stationary incompressible Navier Stokes equation in the exterior of a disk B with non-zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on the disk and zero boundary conditions at infinity. We prove the existence of solutions for an open set of boundary conditions without symmetry.
We study the boundary value problem for the stationary Navier--Stokes system in two dimensional exterior domain. We prove that any solution of this problem with finite Dirichlet integral is uniformly bounded. Also we prove the existence theorem under zero total flux assumption.
We prove global well-posedness of the two-dimensional exterior Navier-Stokes equations for bounded initial data with a finite Dirichlet integral, subject to the non-slip boundary condition. As an application, we construct global solutions for asymptotically constant initial data and arbitrary large Reynolds numbers.
We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for the Navier--Stokes equations of steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a three--dimensional exterior domain with multiply connected boundary. We prove that this problem has a solution for axially symmetric domains and data (without any smallness restrictions on the fluxes).
We consider the motion of compressible Navier-Stokes fluids with the hard sphere pressure law around a rigid obstacle when the velocity and the density at infinity are non zero. This kind of pressure model is largely employed in various physical and industrial applications. We prove the existence of weak solution to the system in the exterior domain.
This paper treats the stationary Stokes problem in exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Navier slip boundary condition. The behavior at infinity of the data and the solution are determined by setting the problem in $L^p$-spaces, for $p> 2$, with weights. The main results are the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions of the corresponding system.
In this paper we investigate the uniqueness of solutions of the steady planar Navier-Stokes equations with different boundary conditions in the exterior domain. For a class of incompressible flow with constant vorticity, we prove the uniqueness of the solution under the enhanced Navier boundary conditions. At the same time, some counterexamples are given to show that the uniqueness of the solution fails under the Navier boundary conditions. For the general incompressible flow with Dirichlet boundary condition, we prove various sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution.
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in the exterior of one obstacle. Assuming that the circulation at infinity of the velocity is sufficiently small, we prove that the large time behavior of the corresponding solution to the initial-boundary value problem is described by the Lamb-Oseen vortex. The later is the well-known explicit self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes system in the whole space $\R^2$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of an incompressible fluid around a bounded obstacle. The problem is modeled by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain in $\R^n$ with $n\ge 2$. We will show that, under some assumptions, any nontrivial velocity field obeys a minimal decaying rate $\exp(-Ct^2\log t)$ at infinity. Our proof is based on appropriate Carleman estimates.
In this paper, the global strong axisymmetric solutions for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system are established in the exterior of a cylinder subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, the vacuum is allowed in these solutions. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the ${L^{2}(s,T;L^{\infty}(Ω))}$ bound for the velocity field, where the axisymmetry of the solutions plays an important role.
In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect terms in an exterior domain with Navier-slip boundary condition and with far-field vacuum. This problem is related to the motion of the compressible viscous flow past a rotating obstacle. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, provided that the initial mass is small. The initial data and the angular velocity of the obstacle are allowed to have large oscillations.
An initial boundary value problem for compressible Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is considered on an exterior domain (with the first Betti number vanishes) in $R^3$ in this paper. The global existence of smooth solutions near a given constant state for compressible MHD with the boundary conditions of Navier-slip for the velocity filed and perfect conduction for the magnetic field is established. Moreover the explicit decay rate is given. In particular, the results obtained in this paper also imply the global existence of classical solutions for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with N…
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the Dirichlet boundary condition in an exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq2$. We compare the long-time behaviour of solutions to this initial-boundary value problem with the long-time behaviour of solutions of the analogous Cauchy problem in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$. We find that the long-time asymptotics of solutions to both problems coincide either in the case of small initial data in the weak $L^{n}$-space or for a certain class of large initial data.
We show that the Navier-Stokes as well as a random perturbation of this equation can be derived from a stochastic variational principle where the pressure is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. Moreover we describe how to obtain corresponding constants of the motion.
Motivated by Gilbarg-Weinberger's early work on asymptotic properties of steady plane solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations on a neighborhood of infinity \cite{GW1978} , we investigate asymptotic properties of steady plane solutions of this system on a half-neighborhood of infinity with finite Dirichlet integral and Navier-slip boundary condition, and obtain that the velocity of the solution grows more slowly than $\sqrt{\log r}$, while the pressure converges to $0$ along each ray passing through the origin.
The nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity is studied in three-dimensional (3D) exterior domains with nonslip or slip boundary conditions. We prove that the strong solutions exists globally in time provided that the gradient of the initial velocity is suitably small. Here the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states. Moreover, after developing some new techniques and methods, the large-time behavior of the strong solutions with exponential decay-in-time rates is also obtained.
We prove new existence and uniqueness results in full Sobolev spaces for the steady-state Oseen problem in a smooth exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. These results are then employed, on the one hand, in the study of analogous properties for the corresponding (linear) time-periodic case and, on the other hand and more significantly, to prove analogous properties for their nonlinear counterpart, at least for small data.
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
We consider the spatial-temporal behavior of the Navier-Stokes flow past a rigid body in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The present paper develops analysis in Lebesgue spaces with anisotropic weights $(1+|x|)^α(1+|x|-x_1)^β$, which naturally arise in the asymptotic structure of fluid when the translational velocity of the body is parallel to the $x_1$-direction. We derive anisotropically weighted $L^q$-$L^r$ estimates for the Oseen semigroup in exterior domains. As applications of those estimates, we study the stability/attainability of the Navier-Stokes flow in anisotropically weighted $L^q$ spaces to get t…
In this paper, we consider the stationary Stokes equations in an exterior domain three-dimensional under a slip boundary condition without friction. We set the problem in weighted Sobolev spaces in order to control the behavior at infinity of the solutions. In this work, we try to investigate the existence and uniqueness of the weak solutions related to this problem in $L^P-$theory when $p>3$. Our proof are based on obtaining inf-sup conditions that play a fundamental role.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
The full compressible Navier-Stokes system (FNS) describing the motion of a viscous, compressible, heat-conductive, and Newtonian polytropic fluid in a three-dimensional (3D) exterior domain is studied. For the initial-boundary-value problem with the slip boundary conditions on the velocity and the Neumann one on the temperature, it is shown that there exists a unique global classical solutions with the initial data which are of small energy but possibly large oscillations. In particular, both the density and temperature are allowed to vanish initially. This is the first result about classical…
Local well-posedness of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum in 3D exterior domains
We study the long-time behavior of infinite-energy solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain, with no-slip boundary conditions. The initial data we consider are finite-energy perturbations of a smooth vortex with small circulation at infinity, but are otherwise arbitrarily large. Using a logarithmic energy estimate and some interpolation arguments, we prove that the solution approaches a self-similar Oseen vortex as $t \to \infty$. This result was obtained in collaboration with Yasunori Maekawa (Kobe University).
We study Caccioppoli's inequalities of the non-stationary Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Our analysis is local near boundary and we prove that, in contrast to the interior case, the Caccioppoli's inequalities of the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, in general, fail near boundary.
This paper studies two well-known models for two-phase fluid flow at constant temperature, the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn and the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, both of which consist of equations for the (total) fluid density rho, the (mass-averaged)velocity u and the concentration (of one of the phases,) c. Assuming in either case that both phases are incompressible with different densities, each of the models is shown to reduce to a system of evolution equations in rho and u alone. In the case of the Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn model, this reduced system is the class…
An algebraic upper bound for the decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Navier-Stokes-Coriolis equations in the critical space $\dot{H} ^{\frac{1}{2}} (\mathbb{R} ^3)$ is derived using the Fourier Splitting Method. Estimates are framed in terms of the decay character of initial data, leading to solutions with algebraic decay and showing in detail the roles played by the linear and nonlinear parts.
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we shall establish the global well-posedness, the space-time analyticity of the Navier-Stokes equations for a class of large periodic data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. This improves the classical result of Koch \& Tataru \cite{koch-tataru}, for the global well-posedness with small initial data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We study the stationary Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with non-homogeneous Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$. We prove existence, uniqueness of weak and strong solutions in $\mathbf{W}^{1,p}(Ω)$ and $\mathbf{W}^{2,p}(Ω)$ for all $1<p<\infty$ considering minimal regularity on the friction coefficient $α$. Moreover, we deduce uniform estimates on the solution with respect to $α$ which enables us to analyze the behavior of the solution when $α\rightarrow \infty$.
In some problems of fluid mechanics, it is possible to be confronted with data that are not regular, that is why we are interested here in the search for the so-called very weak solutions for the stationary Stokes problem with Navier-type boundary conditions in a three-dimensional exterior domain. The problem describes the flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid past an obstacle where we assume that the fluid may slip on the boundary of the obstacle. Because the flow domain is unbounded, we set the problem in weighted Sobolev spaces in order to control the behavior at infinity of the soluti…
In this paper we prove a global well-posedness result for tridimensional Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system with axisymmetric initial data. This system couples Navier-Stokes equations with a transport equation governing the density.
We introduce a framework to justify hydrodynamic limits of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system. We specifically study high friction regimes, which take into account the fact that particles of the dispersed phase are light (resp. small) compared to the fluid part, and lead to the derivation of Transport-Navier-Stokes (resp. Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes) systems.
A mixed variational formulation of some problems in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces is used to define the Newtonian and layer potentials for the Stokes system with $L^{\infty}$ coefficients on Lipschitz domains in ${\mathbb R}^3$. Then the solution of the exterior Dirichlet problem for the Stokes system with $L^{\infty}$ coefficients is presented in terms of these potentials and the inverse of the corresponding single layer operator.
In the note, a local regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It reads that axially symmetric energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have no Type I blowups.
We introduce a concept of space-time holomorphic solutions of partial differential equations and construct a meromorphic solution of Navier-Stokes equations.
We prove that the Stokes semigroup is a bounded analytic semigroup on $L^{\infty}_σ$ of angle $π/2$ for two-dimensional exterior domains. This result is an end point case of the $L^{p}$-boundedness of the semigroup for $p\in (1,\infty)$, established by Borchers and Varnhorn (1993) and an extension of finite time $L^{\infty}$-estimates studied by the author and Giga (2014). The proof is based on the non-existence result of bounded steady flows (the Stokes paradox) and some asymptotic formula for the net force of the Stokes resolvent.
Fundamental solutions to the time-periodic Stokes and Oseen linearizations of the Navier-Stokes equations in dimension $n\geq 2$ are investigated. Integrability properties and pointwise estimates are established.
Multiple spatial zero formations for Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions are shown to occur according to nodal sets of solenoidal Hermite polynomials. Extensions to well-posed Burnett equations with the bi-harmonic viscosity operator are also discussed.
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
These notes are dedicated to the analysis of the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations. After a brief synthesis of the results obtained in [4] related to the existence and the asymptotic stability of partially congested profiles associated to the soft congestion Navier-Stokes system, we present a first local well-posedness result for the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations.
An enstrophy cascade is exhibited for the Navier-Stokes equations in physical scales independently of boundary conditions under physically reasonable assumptions on the flow.
In this paper, we prove existence of smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations that gives a positive answer to the problem proposed by Fefferman [3].
In this paper, we study the upper bound of the time decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and generalized Navier-Stokes equations with damping term $|u|^{β-1}u$ ($β>1$) in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a constraint on $L^2$ energy of the solution. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a global solution for the constrained Navier-Stokes equation on $\R^2$ and $\T$, by a fixed point argument. We also show that the solution of constrained Navier-Stokes converges to the solution of Euler equation as viscosity $ν$ vanishes.
We are concerned with the global existence of classical solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary condition in a three-dimensional (3D) exterior domain. We demonstrate that the classical solutions exists globally in time provided that the initial total energy is suitably small. It is worth noting that the initial density is allowed to have large oscillations and contain vacuum states. For our purpose, some new techniques and methods are adopted to obtain necessary a priori estimates, especially the estimates on the boundary. Moveover, we also give the …
We discuss the regularity of solutions of 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by singular forces. The problem is motivated by the study of complex fluids modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing microscopic corpora embedded in the fluid. This leads naturally to bounded added stress and hence to $W^{-1,\infty}$ forcing of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We address the issue of existence of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions allowing the presence of vacuum zones and assuming rough conditions on the data. We also study the convergence, as the viscosity goes to zero, of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions to the strong solution of the Euler equations with variable density, provided that the initial data converge in $L^{2}$ to a smooth enough limit.
