A 250-year old Newtonian problem, first studied by Euler, turns out to share a lot of similarities with the most extreme astrophysical relativistic object, the Kerr black hole. Although the framework behind the two fields is completely different, both problems are related to gravitational fields that have quite intriguing analogies with respect to orbital motions of a test-body in them. The fundamental reason responsible for their extraordinary similarity is the integrability of both problems, as well as their common multipolar structure. In this paper we demonstrate the existence of a multitude of either qualitative, and sometimes quantitative, similarities between the two problems. Based on this analogy, one could use the Newtonian problem to get insight in cases where the relativistic treatment of the field of a Kerr black hole becomes quite complicated.
The second-order post-Newtonian solution for the light propagation in the field of Kerr-Newman black hole is achieved via an iterative method. Based on this result, we further obtain the second-order post-Newtonian light deflection in Kerr-Newman spacetime, which is formulated in an united form for any arbitrarily incident directions. All results are exhibited in the coordinate system constituted by the initial light-direction vector, the impact vector, and their cross-product.
General Relativity's Kerr metric is famous for its many symmetries which are responsible for the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation governing the geodesic motion and of the Teukolsky equation for wave dynamics. We show that there is a unique stationary and axisymmetric Newtonian gravitational potential that has exactly the same dual property of separable point-particle and wave motion equations. This `Kerr metric analogue' of Newtonian gravity is none other than Euler's 18th century problem of two-fixed gravitating centers.
We present the first analytic computation of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago gauge-invariant redshift function for a small mass in {\it eccentric} orbit around a {\it spinning} black hole. Our results give the redshift contributions that mix eccentricity and spin effects, through second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the eight-and-a-half post-Newtonian order.
The orbital motion is derived for a non-spinning test-mass in the relativistic, gravitational field of a rotationally deformed body not restricted to the equatorial plane or spherical orbit. The gravitational field of the central body is represented by the Kerr metric, expanded to second post-Newtonian order including the linear and quadratic spin terms. The orbital period, the intrinsic periastron advance, and the precession of the orbital plane are derived with the aid of novel canonical variables and action-based methods.
We consider the equatorial circular motion of a test particle of specific charge q/m << 1 in the Kerr-Newman geometry of a rotating charged black hole. We find the particle's conserved energy and conserved projection of the angular momentum on the black hole's axis of rotation as corrections, in leading order of q/m, to the corresponding energy and angular momentum of a neutral particle. We determine the centripetal force acting on the test particle and, consequently, we find a classical pseudo-Newtonian potential with which one can mimic this general relativistic problem.
Pseudo-Newtonian Potential has always been a useful tool to discuss the motion of a particle in space-time to avoid the tedious and nearly impossible nonlinear computations coming from the field equations of general relativity. Mukhopadhyay, in 2002, has introduced such a pseudo-Newtonian potential for rotating Kerr black hole which is efficient enough to replicate the scenario of the classical mechanics. But there was no such model to explain the dark energy realm. In 2016 S Ghosh introduced a Lagrangian for such rotating black hole embedded in quintessence. in this article we obtained a pseu…
We present a semi-analytical approach to the interaction of two (originally) Kerr black holes through a head-on collision process. An expression for the rate of emission of gravitational radiation is derived from an exact solution to the Einstein's field equations. The total amount of gravitational radiation emitted in the process is calculated and compared to current numerical investigations. We find that the spin-spin interaction increases the emission of gravitational wave energy up to 0.2% of the total rest mass. We discuss also the possibility of spin-exchange between the holes.
In this article we present the post-Newtonian (pN) coefficients of the energy flux (and angular momentum flux) at infinity and event horizon for a particle in circular, equatorial orbits about a Kerr black hole (of mass $M$ and spin-parameter $a$) up to 20-pN order. When a pN term is not a polynomial in $a/M$ and includes irrational functions (like polygamma functions), it is written as a power series of $a/M$. This is achieved by calculating the fluxes numerically with an accuracy greater than 1 part in $10^{600}$. Such high accuracy allows us to extract analytical values of pN coefficients t…
We construct the field of an arbitrarily accelerating and rotating point mass which specializes to the Kerr solution when the acceleration vanishes and specializes to Kinnersley's arbitrarily accelerating point mass when the rotation vanishes.
The Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift function for particles moving along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole is currently known up to the second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We improve the analytical computation of such a gauge-invariant quantity by including terms up to the fourth order in eccentricity at the same post-Newtonian approximation level. We also check that our results agrees with the corresponding post-Newtonian expectation of the same quantity, calculated by using the currently known Hamiltonian f…
In this work we examine the Cauchy convergence of both post-Newtonian (T-approximant) and re-summed post-Newtonian (P-approximant) templates for the case of a test-mass orbiting a Kerr black hole along a circular equatorial orbit. The Cauchy criterion demands that the inner product between the $n$ and $n+1$ order approximation approaches unity, as we increase the order of approximation. In previous works, it has been shown that we achieve greater fitting factors and better parameter estimation using the P-approximant templates for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. In this work, we show …
We analytically compute the gravitational self-force correction to the gyroscope precession along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in the Kerr spacetime, generalizing previous results for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results are accurate through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order and to second order in both eccentricity and rotation parameter. We also provide a post-Newtonian check of our results based on the currently known Hamiltonian for spinning binaries.
We present a pseudo-Newtonian potential for accretion disk modeling around the rotating black holes. This potential can describe the general relativistic effects on accretion disk. As the inclusion of rotation in a proper way is very important at an inner edge of disk the potential is derived from the Kerr metric. This potential can reproduce all the essential properties of general relativity within 10% error even for rapidly rotating black holes.
In this paper we provide fully covariant proofs of some theorems on shear-free perfect fluids. In particular, we explicitly show that any shear-free perfect fluid with the acceleration proportional to the vorticity vector (including the simpler case of vanishing acceleration) must be either non-expanding or non-rotating. We also show that these results are not necessarily true in the Newtonian case, and present an explicit comparison of shear-free dust in Newtonian and relativistic theories in order to see where and why the differences appear.
A novel approximation method in studying the perihelion precession and planetary orbits in general relativity is to use geodesic deviation equations of first and high-orders, proposed by Kerner et.al. Using higher-order geodesic deviation approach, we generalize the calculation of orbital precession and the elliptical trajectory of neutral test particles to Kerr$-$Newman space-times. One of the advantage of this method is that, for small eccentricities, one obtains trajectories of planets without using Newtonian and post-Newtonian approximations for arbitrary values of quantity ${G M}/{R c^2}$…
The dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem with Kerr-like primaries in the context of a beyond-Newtonian approximation is studied. The beyond-Newtonian potential is developed by using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure. An expansion in the Kerr potential is performed and terms up-to the first non-Newtonian contribution of both the mass and spin effects are included. With this potential, a model for a test particle of infinitesimal mass orbiting in the equatorial plane of the two primaries is examined. The introduction of a parameter, $ε$, allows examination of the sy…
We prescribe a pseudo-Newtonian vector potential for studying accretion disks around Kerr black holes. The potential is useful to study the inner properties of disk not confined to the equatorial plane where general relativistic effect is indispensable. Therefore, we incorporate the essential properties of the metric at the inner radii through the pseudo-Newtonian potential derived from the general Kerr spacetime. The potential, reproducing most of the salient features of the general-relativity, is valid for entire regime of Kerr parameter. It reproduces the last stable circular orbit exactly …
We address the issues of the scattering of massless planar scalar waves by an acoustic black hole in neo-Newtonian hydrodynamics. We then compute the differential cross section through the use of the partial wave approach in the neo-Newtonian theory which is a modification of the usual Newtonian theory that correctly incorporates the effects of pressure. We mainly show that the scattering of planar waves leads to a modified analogue Aharonov-Bohm effect due to a nontrivial response of the parameters defining the equation of state.
For a test body orbiting an axisymmetric body in Newtonian gravitational theory with multipole moments Q_L, (and for a charge in a non-relativistic orbit about a charge distribution with the same multipole moments) we show that there exists, in addition to the energy and angular momentum component along the symmetry axis, a conserved quantity analogous to the Carter constant of Kerr spacetimes in general relativity, if the odd-L moments vanish, and the even-L moments satisfy Q_2L = m (Q_2/m)^L. Strangely, this is precisely the relation among mass moments enforced by the no-hair theorems of rot…
We present an analytic computation of Detweiler's redshift invariant for a point mass in a circular orbit around a Kerr black hole, giving results up to 8.5 post-Newtonian order while making no assumptions on the magnitude of the spin of the black hole. Our calculation is based on the functional series method of Mano, Suzuki and Takasugi, and employs a rigorous mode-sum regularization prescription based on the Detweiler-Whiting singular-regular decomposition. The approximations used in our approach are minimal; we use the standard self-force expansion to linear order in the mass ratio, and the…
We generalize the factorized resummation of multipolar waveforms introduced by Damour, Iyer and Nagar to spinning black holes. For a nonspinning test-particle spiraling a Kerr black hole in the equatorial plane, we find that factorized multipolar amplitudes which replace the residual relativistic amplitude f_{l m} with its l-th root, ρ_{l m} = f_{l m}^{1/l}, agree quite well with the numerical amplitudes up to the Kerr-spin value q \leq 0.95 for orbital velocities v \leq 0.4. The numerical amplitudes are computed solving the Teukolsky equation with a spectral code. The agreement for prograde o…
The paper presents equations determining the particle spin evolution in the post-Newtonian approximation in the problem of motion of two mass and spin possessing particles. The equations are derived with the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann method from the condition of metric tensor symmetry. The consideration uses the condition of coordinate harmonicity and the metric coincidence nearby the particles with expansions of the Kerr solution written in the harmonic coordinates. For gyroscopes on satellites Gravity Probe B, for example, the equations yield a deviation of the axis of revolution, which is, f…
Optical analogues to black holes allow the investigation of general relativity in a laboratory setting. Previous works have considered analogues to Schwarzschild black holes in an isotropic coordinate system; the major drawback is that required material properties diverge at the horizon. We present the dielectric permittivity and permeability tensors that exactly reproduce the equatorial Kerr-Newman metric, as well as the gradient-index material that reproduces equatorial Kerr-Newman null geodesics. Importantly, the radial profile of the scalar refractive index is finite along all trajectories…
Multipole moments carry a lot of information about the gravitational field. Nonetheless, knowing all the multipole moments of an object does not determine conclusively the nature of the object itself. In particular, the multipole moments of the Kerr spacetime are not unique. Here we construct several physically motivated Newtonian objects with multipole moments identical to those of Kerr. Moreover, we also provide a description of how to include post-Newtonian corrections to these objects without changing their multipole moments.
We study the effect of black hole spin on the accuracy of the post-Newtonian approximation. We focus on the gravitational energy flux for the quasicircular, equatorial, extreme mass-ratio inspiral of a compact object into a Kerr black hole of mass M and spin J. For a given dimensionless spin a=J/M^2 (in geometrical units), the energy flux depends only on the orbital velocity v or (equivalently) on the Boyer-Lindquist orbital radius r. We investigate the formal region of validity of the Taylor post-Newtonian expansion of the energy flux (which is known up to order v^8 beyond the quadrupole form…
The harmonic metric for a moving Kerr black hole is presented in the second post-Minkowskian approximation. It is further demonstrated that the obtained metric is consistent with the Liénard-Wiechert gravitational potential for a moving and spinning source with an arbitrary constant velocity. Based on the metric, we also give the post-Newtonian equations of motion for photon and massive test particle in the time-dependent gravitational field.
We study the sound perturbation of a rotating acoustic black hole in the presence of a disclination. The radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation is written into a Heun form, and its analytical solution is obtained. These solutions have an explicit dependence on the parameter of the disclination. We obtain the exact Hawking-Unruh radiation spectrum.
The explicit form for the post-Newtonian gravitational time delay of light signals propagating on the equatorial plane of a Kerr-Newman black hole is derived. Based on the null geodesic in Kerr-Newman spacetime, we adopt the iterative method to calculate the time delay. Our result reduces to the previous formulation for Kerr black hole if we drop off the contribution from the electrical charge. Our time-delay formula for the Reissner-Nordström geometry is different from the previous publication [Phys. Rev. D 69, 023002 (2004)], in which the largest second-order contribution to the time delay i…
The innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) delimits the transition from circular orbits to those that plunge into a black hole. In the test-mass limit, well-defined ISCO conditions exist for the Kerr and Schwarzschild spacetimes. In the finite-mass case, there are a large variety of ways to define an ISCO in a post-Newtonian (PN) context. Here I generalize the gauge-invariant ISCO condition of Blanchet & Iyer (2003) to the case of spinning (nonprecessing) binaries. The Blanchet-Iyer ISCO condition has two desirable and unexpected properties: (1) it exactly reproduces the Schwarzschild ISCO in …
In the context of the interaction between the electromagnetic field and a dielectric dispersive lossless medium, we present a non-linear version of the relativistically covariant Hopfield model, which is suitable for the description of a dielectric Kerr perturbation propagating in a dielectric medium. The non-linearity is introduced in the Lagrangian through a self-interacting term proportional to the fourth power of the polarization field. We find an exact solution for the nonlinear equations describing a propagating perturbation in the dielectric medium. Furthermore the presence of an analog…
When a particle moves around a Kerr black hole, it radiates gravitational waves. Some of these waves are absorbed by the black hole. We calculate such absorption of gravitational waves induced by a particle of mass mu in a circular orbit on an equatorial plane around a Kerr black hole of mass M. We assume that the velocity of the particle v is much smaller than the speed of light c and calculate the energy absorption rate analytically. We adopt an analytic technique for the Teukolsky equation developed by Mano, Suzuki and Takasugi. We obtain the energy absorption rate to O((v/c)^8) compared to …
We investigate analytically gravitational lensing by charged, stationary, axially symmetric Kerr-Sen dilaton-axion black hole in the weak deflection limit. Approximate solutions to the lightlike equations of motion are present up to and including third-order terms in $M/b$, $a/b$ and $r_α/b$, where $M$ is the black hole mass, $a$ is the angular momentum, $r_α=Q^2/M$, $Q$ being the charge and $b$ is the impact parameter of the light ray. We compute the positions of the two weak field images, the corresponding signed and absolute magnifications up to post-Newtonian order. It is shown that there …
We calculate the energy and angular momentum fluxes across the event horizon of a tidally deformed, rapidly rotating black hole to next-to-leading order in the curvature of the external spacetime. These are expressed in terms of tidal quadrupole moments and their time derivatives, which provide a characterization of a generic tidal environment. As an application of our results, we provide an expression for the energy and angular-momentum fluxes across the horizon when the black hole is a member of a binary system on a slowly-moving, quasi-circular orbit. Our expressions are accurate to 1.5 pos…
We study the possible existence of a Newtonian regime of gravity in $1+1$ dimensions, considering metrics in both the Kerr-Schild and conformal forms. In the former case, the metric gives the exact solution of the Poisson equation in flat space, but the weak-field limit of the solutions and the non-relativistic regime of geodesic motion are not trivial. We show that using harmonic coordinates, the metric is conformally flat and a weak-field expansion is straightforward. An analysis of the non-relativistic regime of geodesic motion remains non-trivial and the weak-field potential only satisfies…
We revisit the accuracy of the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation and its region of validity for quasi-circular orbits of a point particle in the Kerr spacetime, by using an analytically known highest post-Newtonian order gravitational energy flux and accurate numerical results in the black hole perturbation approach. It is found that regions of validity become larger for higher PN order results although there are several local maximums in regions of validity for relatively low-PN order results. This might imply that higher PN order calculations are also encouraged for comparable-mass binaries.
A Kerr black hole with mass parameter m and angular momentum parameter a acting as a gravitational lens gives rise to two images in the weak field limit. We study the corresponding magnification relations, namely the signed and absolute magnification sums and the centroid up to post-Newtonian order. We show that there are post-Newtonian corrections to the total absolute magnification and centroid proportional to a/m, which is in contrast to the spherically symmetric case where such corrections vanish. Hence we also propose a new set of lensing observables for the two images involving these cor…
We investigate the carter like constant for a particle in a non relativistic dipolar field. This special case is a missing link between carter constant in stationary axially symmetric spacetime such as Kerr solution and its possible Newtonian counterpart. We use this system to carry over the definition of angular momentum from Newtonian mechanics to relativistic stationary axially symmetric stationary spacetime.
We consider a recently proposed class of extended teleparallel theories of gravity, which entail a scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to the torsion of a flat, metric-compatible connection. This class of scalar-torsion theories of gravity is constructed in analogy to and as a direct extension of the well-studied class of scalar-curvature gravity theories, and has various common features, such as the conformal frame freedom. For this class we determine the parametrized post-Newtonian limit, both for a massive and a massless scalar field. In the massive case, we determine the effective …
We extend our previous results of the 14th post-Newtonian (PN) order expansion of gravitational waves for a test particle in circular orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole to the 22PN order, i.e. $v^{44}$ beyond the leading Newtonian approximation where $v$ is the orbital velocity of a test particle. Comparing our 22PN formula for the energy flux with high precision numerical results, we find that the relative error of the 22PN flux at the innermost stable circular orbit is about $10^{-5}$. We also estimate the phase difference between the 22PN waveforms and numerical waveforms after a two-…
In this study we apply post-Newtonian (T-approximants) and resummed post-Newtonian (P-approximants) to the case of a test-particle in equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. We compare the two approximants by measuring their effectualness (i.e. larger overlaps with the exact signal), and faithfulness (i.e. smaller biases while measuring the parameters of the signal) with the exact (numerical) waveforms. We find that in the case of prograde orbits, T-approximant templates obtain an effectualness of ~0.99 for spins q < 0.75. For 0.75 < q < 0.95, the effectualness drops to about 0.82. The P-ap…

We present analytic calculations of gravitational waves from a particle orbiting a black hole. We first review the Teukolsky formalism for dealing with the gravitational perturbation of a black hole. Then we develop a systematic method to calculate higher order post-Newtonian corrections to the gravitational waves emitted by an orbiting particle. As applications of this method, we consider orbits that are nearly circular, including exactly circular ones, slightly eccentric ones and slightly inclined orbits off the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole and give the energy flux and angular momen…
In Newtonian gravity, a stationary axisymmetric system admits a third, Carter-like constant of motion if its mass multipole moments are related to each other in exactly the same manner as for the Kerr black-hole spacetime. The Newtonian source with this property consists of two point masses at rest a fixed distance apart. The integrability of motion about this source was first studied in the 1760s by Euler. We show that the general relativistic analogue of the Euler problem, the Bach-Weyl solution, does not admit a Carter-like constant of motion, first, by showing that it does not possess a no…
We investigate resonance crossings of a charged body moving around a Kerr black hole immersed in an external homogeneous magnetic field. This system can serve as an electromagnetic analogue of a weakly non-integrable extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI). In particular, the presence of the magnetic field renders the conservative part of the system non-integrable in the Liouville sense, while the electromagnetic self-force causes the charged body to inspiral. By studying the system without the self-force, we show the existence of an approximate Carter-like constant and discuss how resonances grow …
We study the thermodynamic behavior of multi-spinning d=6 Kerr-anti de Sitter black holes in the canonical ensemble of fixed angular momenta J1 and J2. We find, dependent on the ratio q=J2/J1, qualitatively different interesting phenomena known from the `every day thermodynamics' of simple substances. For q=0 the system exhibits recently observed reentrant large/small/large black hole phase transitions, but for 0<q<<1 we find an analogue of a `solid/liquid' phase transition. Furthermore, for 0.00905<q<0.0985 the system displays the presence of a large/intermediate/small black hole phase transi…
Starting with an exact and simple geodesic, we generate approximate geodesics by summing up higher-order geodesic deviations within a General Relativistic setting, without using Newtonian and post-Newtonian approximations. We apply this method to the problem of closed orbital motion of test particles in the Kerr metric space-time. With a simple circular orbit in the equatorial plane taken as the initial geodesic we obtain finite eccentricity orbits in the form of Taylor series with the eccentricity playing the role of small parameter. The explicit expressions of these higher-order geodesic dev…
Under certain conditions sound waves in fluids experience an acoustic horizon with analogue properties to those of a black hole event horizon. In particular, a draining bathtub-like model can give rise to a rotating acoustic horizon and hence a rotating black hole (acoustic) analogue. We show that sound waves, when enclosed in a cylindrical cavity, can form stationary waves around such rotating acoustic black holes. These acoustic perturbations display similar properties to the scalar clouds that have been studied around Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes; thus they are dubbed acoustic clouds. W…
We study the relativistic accretion flow around a generic stationary axisymmetric space-time and obtain an effective potential ($Φ^{\rm eff}$) that accurately mimics the general relativistic features of Kerr black hole having spin $0\le a_k <1$. Considering the accretion disc confined around the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole and using the relativistic equation of state, we examine the properties of the relativistic accretion flow and compare it with the same obtained form semi-relativistic as well as non-relativistic accretion flows. Towards this, we first investigate the transonic…
This is the first in a series of papers in which the gradient flows of fundamental curvature invariants are used to formulate a visualization of curvature. We start with the construction of strict Newtonian analogues (not limits) of solutions to Einstein's equations based on the topology of the associated gradient flows. We do not start with any easy case. Rather, we start with the Curzon - Chazy solution, which, as history shows, is one of the most difficult exact solutions to Einstein's equations to interpret physically. We show that the entire field of the Curzon - Chazy solution, up to a r…
Investigating the rigidly rotating disc of dust with constant specific charge, we find that it leads to an extreme Kerr-Newman black hole in the ultra-relativistic limit. A necessary and sufficient condition for a black hole limit is, that the electric potential in the co-rotating frame is constant on the disc. In that case certain other relations follow. These relations are reviewed with a highly accurate post-Newtonian expansion. Remarkably it is possible to survey the leading order behaviour close to the black hole limit with the post-Newtonian expansion. We find that the disc solution clos…
We formulate a generic Newtonian like analogous potential for static spherically symmetric general relativistic (GR) spacetime, and subsequently derived proper Newtonian like analogous potential corresponding to Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes, both exhibiting naked singularities. The derived potentials found to reproduce the entire GR features including the orbital dynamics of the test particle motion and the orbital trajectories, with precise accuracy. The nature of the particle orbital dynamics including their trajectory profiles in JNW and RN geometries s…
We discuss the effects of the black holes' spin-multipole structure in the orbital dynamics of binary black holes according to general relativity, focusing on the leading-post-Newtonian-order couplings at each order in an expansion in the black holes' spins. We first review previous widely confirmed results up through fourth order in spin, observe suggestive patterns therein, and discuss how the results can be extrapolated to all orders in spin with minimal information from the test-body limit. We then justify this extrapolation by providing a complete derivation within the post-Newtonian fram…
The late time accelerated expansion of the Universe demands that even in local galactic-scales it is desirable to study astrophysical phenomena, particularly relativistic accretion related phenomena in massive galaxies or in galaxy mergers and the dynamics of the kiloparsecs-scale structure and beyond, in the local-galaxies in Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SDS) background, rather than in Schwarzschild or Newtonian paradigm. Owing to the complex and nonlinear character of the underlying magnetohydrodynamical equations in general relativistic (GR) regime, it is quite useful to have an Newtonian analo…
Extending a method developed by Sasaki in the Schwarzschild case and by Shibata, Sasaki, Tagoshi, and Tanaka in the Kerr case, we calculate the post-Newtonian expansion of the gravitational wave luminosities from a test particle in circular orbit around a rotating black hole up to $O(v^8)$ beyond the quadrupole formula. The orbit of a test particle is restricted on the equatorial plane. We find that spin dependent terms appear in each post-Newtonian order, and that at $O(v^6)$ they have a significant effect on the orbital phase evolution of coalescing compact binaries. By comparing the post-Ne…
We demonstrate that a spherical accretion onto astrophysical black holes, under the influence of Newtonian or various post-Newtonian pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potentials, may constitute a concrete example of classical analogue gravity naturally found in the Universe. We analytically calculate the corresponding analogue Hawking temperature as a function of the minimum number of physical parameters governing the accretion flow. We study both the polytropic and the isothermal accretion. We show that unlike in a general relativistic spherical accretion, analogue white hole solutions can n…
We study tidal effects on self-gravitating Newtonian stars rotating around a Kerr black hole in stable circular orbits away from the equatorial plane. Such cases are exemplified by a non-vanishing Carter's constant. Here, we calculate the tidal disruption limit (Roche limit) of the star numerically, in Fermi normal coordinates. The Roche limit is found to depend strongly on the choice of the orbit, and differs significantly from the equatorial plane result as one approaches nearly polar orbits. As expected, this difference is large when the star is close to the black hole (near to the innermos…
We present an improved version of the approximate scheme for generating inspirals of test-bodies into a Kerr black hole recently developed by Glampedakis, Hughes and Kennefick. Their original "hybrid" scheme was based on combining exact relativistic expressions for the evolution of the orbital elements (the semi-latus rectum p and eccentricity e) with approximate, weak-field, formula for the energy and angular momentum fluxes, amended by the assumption of constant inclination angle, iota, during the inspiral. Despite the fact that the resulting inspirals were overall well-behaved, certain path…
