In this paper we investigate the model of the anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a free, complex scalar field, and construct a fully back-reacted holographic model of superconductor with excited states. With the fixed charge $q$, there exist a series of excited states of holographic superconductor with the corresponding critical chemical potentials. The condensates as functions of the temperature for the two operators $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ of excited states are also studied. For the optical conductivity in the excited states, we find that there exist the additional peaks in the imaginary and real parts of the conductivity. Moreover, the number of peaks corresponding to $n$-th excited state is equal to $n$.
We develop a holographic superconductor in BTZ black hole background with backreactions. We investigate the influence of the backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair and the dynamics of perturbation in the background spacetime. When the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound is approached, we argue that only one of two possible operators can reflect the real property of the condensation in the holographic superconductor. This argument is supported by the investigation in dynamics.
We employ the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem to analytically investigate the properties of the holographic superconductors. We find that the analytic method is still powerful when the backreaction is turned on. Reducing step size in the iterative procedure, we observe that the consistency of results between the analytic and numerical computations can be further improved. The obtained analytic result can be used to back up the numerical computations in the holographic superconductor in the fully backreacted spacetime.
We analytically study the holographic superconductors for Born-Infeld electrodynamics in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with backreactions. We note that the analytic method is still powerful for this complex system and the results obtained by the analytical and numerical computations are consistent. We find that the critical temperature decreases with the increase of the backreactions, Gauss-Bonnet, and Born-Infeld parameters, which means that increase of the strength of these effects will make the scalar hair harder to form. Furthermore, the Gauss-Bonnet factor modifies the critical temperature more si…
We numerically investigate some properties of unbalanced Stückelberg holographic superconductors, by considering backreaction effects of fields on the background geometry. More precisely, we study the impacts of the chemical potential mismatch and Stückelberg mechanism on the condensation and conductivity types (electrical, spin, mixed, thermo-electric, thermo-spin and thermal conductivity). Our results show that the Stückelberg's model parameters $C_α$ and $α$ not only have significant impacts on the phase transition, but also affect the conductivity pseudo-gap and the strength of conductivit…
We study general models of holographic superconductors away from the probe limit. We find that the backreaction of the spacetime can bring richer physics in the phase transition. Moreover we observe that the ratio $ω_g/T_c$ changes with the strength of the backreaction and is not a universal constant.
In this paper, we analytically investigate the properties of holographic superconductors in higher dimensions in the framework of Born-Infeld electrodynamics taking into account the backreaction of the spacetime using the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue method. In the background of pure Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, based on a perturbative approach, we obtain the relation between the critical temperature and the charge density. Higher value of the backreaction and Born-Infeld parameters result in a harder condensation to form in both cases. The analytical results are found to agree with the ex…
We construct the holographic superconductors away from the probe limit in the consistent $D\rightarrow4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We observe that, both for the ground state and excited states, the critical temperature first decreases then increases as the curvature correction tends towards the Chern-Simons limit in a backreaction dependent fashion. However, the decrease of the backreaction, the increase of the scalar mass, or the increase of the number of nodes will weaken this subtle effect of the curvature correction. Moreover, for the curvature correction approaching the Chern-Simons …
We study radion stabilization in the compact Randall-Sundrum model by introducing a bulk scalar field, as in the Goldberger and Wise mechanism, but (partially) taking into account the backreactions from the scalar field on the metric. Our generalization reconciles the radion potential found by Goldberger and Wise with the radion mass obtained with the so-called superpotential method where backreaction is fully considered. Moreover we study the holographic phase transition and its gravitational wave signals in this model. The improved control over backreactions opens up a large region in parame…
In this paper we have analytically investigated holographic superconductors in four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity background. Recently the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has been formulated by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α\rightarrow \fracα{d-4}$ and taking the limit $d\rightarrow 4$, and this predicts several interesting new features. To know the effect of the curvature correction on the $(2+1)$-dimensional superconductors, we have consider the $3+1$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Using the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue approach, th…
In this paper, we study the holographic models of s-wave and p-wave Josephoson junction away from probe limit in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime, respectively. With the backreaction of the matter, we obtained the anisotropic black hole solution with the condensation of matter fields. We observe that the critical temperature of Josephoson junction decreases with increasing backreaction. In addition to this, the tunneling current and condenstion of Josephoson junction become smaller as backreaction grows larger, but the relationship between current and phase difference still holds for sine function.…
We develop a general holographic superconductor away from the probe limit by considering the corrections both in the gravity and in the gauge matter fields. We find the consistent effects of the high curvature correction in the gravity, the nonlinear correction in the gauge matter field and the backreaction on the dynamics of bulk AdS background and boundary CFT. They all have the effect to protect the stability of the bulk spacetime and hinder the formation of the scalar hair condensation on the boundary.
We investigate the effect of spacetime backreaction on the upper critical magnetic field for s-wave holographic superconductors by using the matching method. The backreaction of the constant external magnetic field and the electric field to the background geometry leads to a dyonic black hole solution. The magnetic fields as well as the electric fields acting as gravitational sources tend to depress the critical temperature of the superconductor. We derive the analytical expression for the upper critical magnetic field up to $\mathcal{O}(κ^2)$ order and find that backreaction makes the upper c…
In this work, we perform a holographic study to estimate the effect of backreaction on the correlation between two subsystems forming the thermofield double (TFD) state. Each of these subsystems is described as a strongly coupled large-$N_c$ thermal field theory, and the backreaction imparted to it is sourced by the presence of a uniform distribution of heavy static quarks. The TFD state we consider here holographically corresponds to an entangled state of two AdS blackholes, each of which is deformed by a uniform distribution of static strings. In order to make a holographic estimation of cor…
We study holographic superconductors in five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity both numerically and analytically. We find the critical temperature of the superconductor decreases as backreaction is increased, although the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is more subtle: the critical temperature first decreases then increases as the coupling tends towards the Chern-Simons value in a backreaction dependent fashion. We compute the conductivity of the system, finding the energy gap, and show that the effect of both backreaction and higher curvature is to increase the gap ratio $ω_g/T_c$…
In the fully back reacted geometry we develop a supercurrent solution which corresponds to a deformation of superconducting black holes by the spatial component of gauge fields with a non- trivial radial dependence. We investigate the influence of the backreaction on the condensation and the phase structure in the AdS black hole spacetime. Different from that observed in the probe limit, we find that two operators cannot give consistent information on the phase diagram. We argue that only one of these two operators can reflect the real property of the condensation and phase structure in the ho…
In a previous paper (arXiv:1309.2204, JHEP 1311 (2013) 087), we present a holographic s+p superconductor model with a scalar triplet charged under an SU(2) gauge field in the bulk. We also study the competition and coexistence of the s-wave and p-wave orders in the probe limit. In this work we continue to study the model by considering the full back-reaction The model shows a rich phase structure and various condensate behaviors such as the "n-type" and "u-type" ones, which are also known as reentrant phase transitions in condensed matter physics. The phase transitions to the p-wave phase or s…
In this paper, based on the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue approach, we analytically investigate the properties of holographic superconductors in the background of pure Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity taking into account the backreaction of the spacetime. Higher value of the backreaction parameter results in a harder condensation to form in both cases. The analytical results obtained are found to be in good agreement with the existing numerical results.
We present an analytic treatment near the phase transition for the critical temperature of (3+1)-dimensional holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with backreaction. We find that the backreaction makes the critical temperature of the superconductor decrease and condensation harder. This is consistent with previous numerical results.
We study the d-wave holographic superconductors (the d-wave model proposed in [arXiv:1003.2991[hep-th]]) immersed in constant external magnetic fields by using the analytic matching method and numerical computation. In the probe limit, we calculate the spatially dependent condensate solution in the presence of the magnetism and find that the expression for the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The result shows that the upper critical field gradually increases to its maximum value $B_{c2}$ at absolute zero temperature T=0, while vanishing …
We generalize the analytical investigation on the properties of $s$-wave holographic superconductors in the presence of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics by taking the backreaction into account. We find that in the presence of nonlinear gauge field, one can still employ the analytical method when the backreaction is turned on. Our calculation is based on the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem, which is a variational method. For the system under consideration, we obtain the relation between the critical temperature and the charge density. We find that both backreaction and Born-Infeld param…
We study the breaking of an Abelian symmetry close to the horizon of a black string as well as close to the tip of a solitonic, cigar-shaped solution in (3+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time. We use these solutions to describe holographic superfluids away from the probe limit, i.e. taking backreaction into account. We observe that up to four phases exist in this model representing the duals of black string solutions with and without scalar hair and solitonic, cigar-shaped solutions with and without scalar hair, respectively. We construct the full phase diagram that describes the phase tr…
We study gauge and gravity backreaction in a holographic model of quantum quench across a superfluid critical transition. The model involves a complex scalar field coupled to a gauge and gravity field in the bulk. In earlier work (arXiv:1211.1776) the scalar field had a strong self-coupling, in which case the backreaction on both the metric and the gauge field can be ignored. In this approximation, it was shown that when a time dependent source for the order parameter drives the system across the critical point at a rate slow compared to the initial gap, the dynamics in the critical region is …
We study the entanglement entropy of general holographic dual models both in AdS soliton and AdS black hole backgrounds with full backreaction. We find that the entanglement entropy is a good probe to explore the properties of the holographic superconductors and provides richer physics in the phase transition. We obtain the effects of the scalar mass, model parameter and backreaction on the entropy, and argue that the jump of the entanglement entropy may be a quite general feature for the first order phase transition. In strong contrast to the insulator/superconductor system, we note that the …
By using the RT formula and the subregion CV conjecture respectively, we numerically investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic subregion complexity (HSC) for two holographic d-wave superconducting models with backreactions. We find that both the HEE and HSC can be used as good probes to these two d-wave superconducting phase transitions. The HEE of superconducting phase is always lower than that of the normal phase due to the condensation of degrees of freedom below the critical temperature Tc. However, for the HSC, it behaves differently and interestingly, which d…
We analytically describe the properties of the s-wave holographic superconductor with the Exponential nonlinear electrodynamics in the Lifshitz black hole background in four-dimensions. Employing an assumption the scalar and gauge fields backreact on the background geometry, we calculate the critical temperature as well as the condensation operator. Based on Sturm-Liouville method, we show that the critical temperature decreases with increasing exponential nonlinear electrodynamics and Lifshitz dynamical exponent, z, indicating that condensation becomes difficult. Also we find that the effects…
Solitons are important nonperturbative excitations in superfluids. For holographic superfluids, we numerically construct dark solitons that have the symmetry-restored phase at their core. A central point is that we include the gravitational back-reaction of the matter fields, which becomes important at low temperatures. We study in detail the properties of these solitons under variation of the back-reaction strength via tuning the gravitational constant. In particular, the depletion fraction of the particle number density at the core of the solitons is carefully investigated. In agreement with…
In this work we study the fluctuation and dissipation of a string attached to a brane in a deformed and backreated AdS-Schwarzschild spacetime. This space is a solution of Einstein-dilaton equations and contains a conformal exponential factor $\exp(k/r^2)$ in the metric. We consider the backreaction contributions coming only from the exponential warp factor on the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole, where the string and brane are in the probe approximation. Within this Lorentz invariant holographic model we have computed the admittance, the diffusion coefficient, the two-point functions and the regu…
In this paper, we investigate the effects of nonlinear exponential electrodynamics as well as backreaction on the properties of one-dimensional $s$-wave holographic superconductors. We continue our study both analytically and numerically. In analytical study, we employ the Sturm-Liouville method while in numerical approach we perform the shooting method. We obtain a relation between the critical temperature and chemical potential analytically. Our results show a good agreement between analytical and numerical methods. We observe that the increase in the strength of both nonlinearity and backre…
In this paper, we have analytically computed the conductivity of holographic superconductors in the framework of Born-Infeld electrodynamics taking into account the backreaction of the matter fields on the bulk spacetime metric. The effect of the Born-Infeld electrodynamics is incorporated in the metric. The band gap energy is found to be corrected by the backreaction and Born-Infeld parameters. The conductivity expression is then compared with that obtained from a self consistent approach.
We study fully backreacting, Gauss-Bonnet (GB) holographic superconductors in 5 bulk spacetime dimensions. We explore the system's dependence on the scalar mass for both positive and negative GB coupling, $α$. We find that when the mass approaches the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound and $α\rightarrow L^2/4$ the effect of backreaction is to increase the critical temperature, $T_c$, of the system: the opposite of its effect in the rest of parameter space. We also find that reducing $α$ below zero increases $T_c$ and that the effect of backreaction is diminished. We study the zero temperature l…
We analyze different holographic complexity proposals for black holes that include corrections from bulk quantum fields. The specific setup is the quantum BTZ black hole, which encompasses in an exact manner the effects of conformal fields with large central charge in the presence of the black hole, including the backreaction corrections to the BTZ metric. Our results show that Volume Complexity admits a consistent quantum expansion and correctly reproduces known limits. On the other hand, the generalized Action Complexity picks up large contributions from the singularity, which is modified du…
Gauge/gravity duality has proved to be a very successful tool for describing strongly coupled systems in particle physics and heavy ion physics. The application of the gauge/gravity duality to quantum matter is a promising candidate to explain questions concerning non-zero temperature dynamics and transport coefficients. To a large extent, the success of applications of gauge/gravity duality to the quark-gluon plasma is founded on the derivation of a universal result, the famous ratio of shear viscosity and entropy density. As a base for applications to condensed matter physics, it is highly d…
In this paper we re-investigate the model of the anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to Maxwell and charged scalar fields, which has been studied as the gravitational dual to a superconductor for a long time since the famous work [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 101}, 031601 (2008)]. By numerical method, we present a novel family of solutions of holographical superconductor with excited states, and find there exists a lower critical temperature in the corresponding excited state. Moreover, we study the condensate and conductivity in the excited states. It is very interesting that the conductivity $σ$ of e…
We study a holographic construction of quantum rotating BTZ black holes that incorporates the exact backreaction from strongly coupled quantum conformal fields. It is based on an exact four-dimensional solution for a black hole localized on a brane in AdS$_4$, first discussed some years ago but never fully investigated in this manner. Besides quantum CFT effects and their backreaction, we also investigate the role of higher-curvature corrections in the effective three-dimensional theory. We obtain the quantum-corrected geometry and the renormalized stress tensor. We show that the quantum black…
We investigate the perturbative (in $g_s N_{D8}$) backreaction of localized D8 branes in D4-D8 systems including in particular the Sakai Sugimoto model. We write down the explicit expressions of the backreacted metric, dilaton and RR form. We find that the backreaction remains small up to a radial value of $u \ll \ell_s/(g_s N_{D8})$, and that the background functions are smooth except at the D8 sources. In this perturbative window, the original embedding remains a solution to the equations of motion. Furthermore, the fluctuations around the original embedding, describing scalar mesons, do not…
Using linear response theory, we analyze optical response properties of generalized holographic superconductors, in AdS-Schwarzschild and single R-charged black hole backgrounds in four dimensions. By introducing momentum dependent vector mode perturbations, the response functions for these systems are studied numerically, including the effects of backreaction. This complements and completes the probe limit analysis for these backgrounds initiated in our previous work ({\tt arXiv : 1305.6273}). Our numerical analysis indicates a negative Depine-Lakhtakia index for both the backgrounds studied,…
We study the scalar condensation of a general holographic superconductor model in AdS black hole background away from the probe limit. We find the model parameters together with the scalar mass and backreaction can determine the order of phase transitions completely. In addition, we observe two types of discontinuities of the scalar operator in the case of first order phase transitions. We analyze in detail the effects of the scalar mass and backreaction on the formation of discontinuities and arrive at an approximate relation between the threshold model parameters. Furthermore, we obtain supe…
The variational method for Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem was employed to study analytically properties of the holographic superconductor with dark matter sector, in which a coupling between Maxwell field and another U(1)-gauge field was considered. The backreaction of the dark matter sector on gravitational background in question was also examined.
Excitations of a vortex are usually considered in a linear approximation neglecting their backreaction on the vortex. In the present paper we investigate backreaction of Proca type excitations on a straightlinear vortex in the Abelian Higgs model. We propose exact Ansatz for fields of the excited vortex. From initial set of six nonlinear field equations we obtain (in a limit of weak excitations) two linear wave equations for the backreaction corrections. Their approximate solutions are found in the cases of plane wave and wave packet type excitations. We find that the excited vortex radiates v…
In this paper, we generalize the study of the model of holographic superconductor in the excited states to the framework of massive gravity. By taking into account the effect of massive graviton, we numerically present a family of solutions of the holographic superconductor in excited states, and find that the critical temperatures can be higher due to the effect of massive graviton comparing with the superconductor in Einstein gravity. We also investigate the condensates and conductivities in the ground state and the excited states with studying various parameters that determine the framework…
We employ gauge-gravity duality to study the backreaction effect of 4-dimensional large-$N$ quantum field theories on constant-curvature backgrounds, and in particular de Sitter space-time. The field theories considered are holographic QFTs, dual to RG flows between UV and IR CFTs. We compute the holographic QFT contribution to the gravitational effective action for 4d Einstein manifold backgrounds. We find that for a given value of the cosmological constant $λ$, there generically exist two backreacted constant-curvature solutions, as long as $λ< λ_{\textrm{max}} \sim M_p^2 / N^2$, otherwise n…
We construct the gravitational solution of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model by introducing a magnetic field on the flavor brane. With taking into account their backreaction, we re-solve the type IIA supergravity in the presence of the magnetic field. Our calculation shows the gravitational solutions are magnetic-dependent and analytic both in the bubble (confined) and black brane (deconfined) case. We study the dual field theory at the leading order in the ratio of the number of flavors and colors, also in the Veneziano limit. Some physical properties related to the hadronic physics in an exter…
Based on the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem, we develop a general analytic technique to investigate the excited states of the holographic superconductors. By including more higher order terms in the expansion of the trial function, we observe that the analytic results agree well with the numeric data, which indicates that the Sturm-Liouville method is very powerful to study the holographic superconductors even if we consider the excited states. For both the holographic s-wave and p-wave models, we find that the excited state has a lower critical temperature than the corresponding ground st…
We analytically as well as numerically study the effects of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics on the properties of $(1+1)$-dimensional s-wave holographic superconductors. We relax the probe limit and further assume the scalar and gauge fields affect on the background spacetime. We thus explore the effects of backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair. For the analytical method, we employ the Sturm-Liouville eigen value problem and for the numerical method, we employ the shooting method. We show that these methods are powerful enough to analyze the critical temperature and phase tr…
We show that a hairy black hole solution can provide a holographically dual description of quark confinement. There exists a one-parameter sensible metric which receives the backreaction of matter contents in the holographic action, where the scalar and gauge field are responsible for the condensation of chromomagnetic monopoles. This model features a preconfining phase triggered by second-order monopole condensation and a first-order confinement/deconfinement phase transition. To confirm the confinement, the quark-antiquark potential is calculated by probing a QCD string in both phases. At la…
We extend in two directions our recent investigation of strongly interacting quantum fields in a class of spacetimes with chronology horizons (Misner spacetimes). First, we generalize to arbitrary dimensions the holographic mechanism of chronology protection in the absence of gravitational backreaction. The AdS geometry dual to a conformal field theory in these spacetimes shows, in every dimension, an entire separation between the bulk duals of the chronal and non-chronal regions, with the former being complete, regular geometries. In some instances the protection requires the inclusion of non…
We study the phase transitions in the metal/superconductor system using topological invariants of the Ryu-Takayanagi ($RT$) surface and the volume enclosed by the $RT$ surface in the Lifshitz black hole background. It is shown that these topological invariant quantities identify not only the phase transition but also its order. According to these findings a discontinuity slope is observed at the critical points for these invariant quantities that correspond to the second order of phase transition. These topological invariants provide a clearer illustration of the superconductor phase transitio…
We employ the numerical and analytical methods to study the effects of the hyperscaling violation on the ground and excited states of holographic superconductors for $d=2,~z=2$. For both the holographic s-wave and p-wave models with the hyperscaling violation, we observe that the excited state has a lower critical temperature than the corresponding ground state, which is similar to the relativistic case, and the difference of the dimensionless critical chemical potential between the consecutive states decreases as the hyperscaling violation increases. Interestingly, as we amplify the hyperscal…
We analytically as well as numerically study the properties of one-dimensional holographic p- wave superconductors in the presence of backreaction. We employ the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem for the analytical calculation and the shooting method for the numerical investigations. We apply the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence and determine the relation between the critical temperature Tc and the chemical potential μfor different values of mass m of charged spin-1 field and backreacting parameters. We observe that the data of both analytical and numerical studies are in good agreement. We find out …
Within the framework of AdS/CFT duality, excited states of the conformal field living at the global AdS boundary of a four-dimensional spacetime Einstein gravity are investigated analytically in the probe limit where the field equations are linearized. At asymptotically large values, the threshold chemical potential for the appearance of excited condensate states are discrete, equal spacing, with the gap approaches zero logarithmically in the limit $T\rightarrow 0$. Remarkably, numerical results show that, this behavior applies even for states as low as for the first or the second excited stat…
These lectures give an introduction to the theory of holographic superconductors. These are superconductors that have a dual gravitational description using gauge/gravity duality. After introducing a suitable gravitational theory, we discuss its properties in various regimes: the probe limit, the effects of backreaction, the zero temperature limit, and the addition of magnetic fields. Using the gauge/gravity dictionary, these properties reproduce many of the standard features of superconductors. Some familiarity with gauge/gravity duality is assumed. A list of open problems is included at the …
We construct a family of solutions of the holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions with the excited states in the AdS soliton background by using both the numerical and analytical methods. The interesting point is that the improved Sturm-Liouville method can not only analytically investigate the properties of the phase transition with the excited states, but also the distributions of the condensed fields in the vicinity of the critical point. We observe that, regardless of the type of the holographic model, the excited state has a higher critical chemical potential than the corre…
Following a methodology similar to \cite{Alishahiha:2015rta}, we derive a holographic complexity for two dimensional holographic superconductors (gauge/string superconductors) with backreactions. Applying a perturbation method proposed by Kanno in Ref. \cite{kanno}, we study behaviors of the complexity for a dual quantum system near critical points. We show that when a system moves from the normal phase ($T>T_c$) to the superconductor phase ($T<T_c$), the holographic complexity will be divergent.
We revisit HHH model in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 031601 (2008)] and extend the ansatz of matter fields to being of depending on a spatial dimension except the holographic direction. Despite homogeneous solutions of ground and excited states, especially for the excited states, there also exists solutions where the translational invariance is broken. It is worth mentioning that no periodic sources are assigned to the matter fields, so the translational symmetry is broken spontaneously. We investigate how the new solutions and the condensates of excited states develop with the change of tempe…
We start from an Einstein $-$ Maxwell system coupled with a charged scalar field in Anti$-$de Sitter space$-$time. In the setup where the pressure $P$ is identified with the cosmological constant, the AdS black hole (BH) undergoes the phase transition from small to large BHs, which is similar to the transition from liquid to gas in the van der Waals theory. Based on this framework, we study the triplet of holographic superconducting states, consisting of ground state and two lowest excited states. Our numerical calculations show that the pressure variation in the bulk creates a mechanism in th…
