Different from the emotion recognition in individual utterances, we propose a multimodal learning framework using relation and dependencies among the utterances for conversational emotion analysis. The attention mechanism is applied to the fusion of the acoustic and lexical features. Then these fusion representations are fed into the self-attention based bi-directional gated recurrent unit (GRU) layer to capture long-term contextual information. To imitate real interaction patterns of different speakers, speaker embeddings are also utilized as additional inputs to distinguish the speaker identities during conversational dialogs. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct experiments on the IEMOCAP database. Experimental results demonstrate that our method shows absolute 2.42% performance improvement over the state-of-the-art strategies.

We leverage different context windows when predicting the emotion of different utterances. New modules are included to realize variable-length context: 1) two speaker-aware units, which explicitly model inner- and inter-speaker dependencies to form distilled conversational context, and 2) a top-k normalization layer, which determines the most proper context windows from the conversational context to predict emotion. Experiments and ablation studies show that our approach outperforms several strong baselines on three public datasets.

We present several techniques to tackle the mismatch in class distributions between training and test data in the Contextual Emotion Detection task of SemEval 2019, by extending the existing methods for class imbalance problem. Reducing the distance between the distribution of prediction and ground truth, they consistently show positive effects on the performance. Also we propose a novel neural architecture which utilizes representation of overall context as well as of each utterance. The combination of the methods and the models achieved micro F1 score of about 0.766 on the final evaluation.
Neural network-based Open-ended conversational agents automatically generate responses based on predictive models learned from a large number of pairs of utterances. The generated responses are typically acceptable as a sentence but are often dull, generic, and certainly devoid of any emotion. In this paper, we present neural models that learn to express a given emotion in the generated response. We propose four models and evaluate them against 3 baselines. An encoder-decoder framework-based model with multiple attention layers provides the best overall performance in terms of expressing the r…
Automatic emotion recognition for real-life appli-cations is a challenging task. Human emotion expressions aresubtle, and can be conveyed by a combination of several emo-tions. In most existing emotion recognition studies, each audioutterance/video clip is labelled/classified in its entirety. However,utterance/clip-level labelling and classification can be too coarseto capture the subtle intra-utterance/clip temporal dynamics. Forexample, an utterance/video clip usually contains only a fewemotion-salient regions and many emotionless regions. In thisstudy, we propose to use attention mechanism …
This paper focuses on two key problems for audio-visual emotion recognition in the video. One is the audio and visual streams temporal alignment for feature level fusion. The other one is locating and re-weighting the perception attentions in the whole audio-visual stream for better recognition. The Long Short Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN) is employed as the main classification architecture. Firstly, soft attention mechanism aligns the audio and visual streams. Secondly, seven emotion embedding vectors, which are corresponding to each classification emotion type, are added to…

Conversational emotion recognition (CER) has attracted increasing interests in the natural language processing (NLP) community. Different from the vanilla emotion recognition, effective speaker-sensitive utterance representation is one major challenge for CER. In this paper, we exploit speaker identification (SI) as an auxiliary task to enhance the utterance representation in conversations. By this method, we can learn better speaker-aware contextual representations from the additional SI corpus. Experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed architecture is highly effecti…

Emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) aims to analyze the speaker's state and identify their emotion in the conversation. Recent works in ERC focus on context modeling but ignore the representation of contextual emotional tendency. In order to extract multi-modal information and the emotional tendency of the utterance effectively, we propose a new structure named Emoformer to extract multi-modal emotion vectors from different modalities and fuse them with sentence vector to be an emotion capsule. Furthermore, we design an end-to-end ERC model called EmoCaps, which extracts emotion vectors …
Speech emotion recognition is the task of recognizing the speaker's emotional state given a recording of their utterance. While most of the current approaches focus on inferring emotion from isolated utterances, we argue that this is not sufficient to achieve conversational emotion recognition (CER) which deals with recognizing emotions in conversations. In this work, we propose several approaches for CER by treating it as a sequence labeling task. We investigated transformer architecture for CER and, compared it with ResNet-34 and BiLSTM architectures in both contextual and context-less scena…

Recognizing emotions in conversations is a challenging task due to the presence of contextual dependencies governed by self- and inter-personal influences. Recent approaches have focused on modeling these dependencies primarily via supervised learning. However, purely supervised strategies demand large amounts of annotated data, which is lacking in most of the available corpora in this task. To tackle this challenge, we look at transfer learning approaches as a viable alternative. Given the large amount of available conversational data, we investigate whether generative conversational models c…

Many socio-linguistic cues are used in conversational analysis, such as emotion, sentiment, and dialogue acts. One of the fundamental cues is politeness, which linguistically possesses properties such as social manners useful in conversational analysis. This article presents findings of polite emotional dialogue act associations, where we can correlate the relationships between the socio-linguistic cues. We confirm our hypothesis that the utterances with the emotion classes Anger and Disgust are more likely to be impolite. At the same time, Happiness and Sadness are more likely to be polite. A…

Conversational Causal Emotion Entailment aims to detect causal utterances for a non-neutral targeted utterance from a conversation. In this work, we build conversations as graphs to overcome implicit contextual modelling of the original entailment style. Following the previous work, we further introduce the emotion information into graphs. Emotion information can markedly promote the detection of causal utterances whose emotion is the same as the targeted utterance. However, it is still hard to detect causal utterances with different emotions, especially neutral ones. The reason is that models…

Multimodal emotion recognition in conversations (mERC) is an active research topic in natural language processing (NLP), which aims to predict human's emotional states in communications of multiple modalities, e,g., natural language and facial gestures. Innumerable implicit prejudices and preconceptions fill human language and conversations, leading to the question of whether the current data-driven mERC approaches produce a biased error. For example, such approaches may offer higher emotional scores on the utterances by females than males. In addition, the existing debias models mainly focus …

Human language expression is based on the subjective construal of the situation instead of the objective truth conditions, which means that speakers' personalities and emotions after cognitive processing have an important influence on conversation. However, most existing datasets for conversational AI ignore human personalities and emotions, or only consider part of them. It's difficult for dialogue systems to understand speakers' personalities and emotions although large-scale pre-training language models have been widely used. In order to consider both personalities and emotions in the proce…
The modeling of conversational context plays a vital role in emotion recognition from conversation (ERC). In this paper, we put forward a novel idea of encoding the utterances with a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to better model the intrinsic structure within a conversation, and design a directed acyclic neural network, namely DAG-ERC, to implement this idea. In an attempt to combine the strengths of conventional graph-based neural models and recurrence-based neural models, DAG-ERC provides a more intuitive way to model the information flow between long-distance conversation background and near…

Achieving realistic, vivid, and human-like synthesized conversational gestures conditioned on multi-modal data is still an unsolved problem due to the lack of available datasets, models and standard evaluation metrics. To address this, we build Body-Expression-Audio-Text dataset, BEAT, which has i) 76 hours, high-quality, multi-modal data captured from 30 speakers talking with eight different emotions and in four different languages, ii) 32 millions frame-level emotion and semantic relevance annotations. Our statistical analysis on BEAT demonstrates the correlation of conversational gestures w…
Causal Emotion Entailment aims to identify causal utterances that are responsible for the target utterance with a non-neutral emotion in conversations. Previous works are limited in thorough understanding of the conversational context and accurate reasoning of the emotion cause. To this end, we propose Knowledge-Bridged Causal Interaction Network (KBCIN) with commonsense knowledge (CSK) leveraged as three bridges. Specifically, we construct a conversational graph for each conversation and leverage the event-centered CSK as the semantics-level bridge (S-bridge) to capture the deep inter-utteran…
The long-standing goal of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been to create human-like conversational systems. Such systems should have the ability to develop an emotional connection with the users, hence emotion recognition in dialogues is an important task. Emotion detection in dialogues is a challenging task because humans usually convey multiple emotions with varying degrees of intensities in a single utterance. Moreover, emotion in an utterance of a dialogue may be dependent on previous utterances making the task more complex. Emotion recognition has always been in great demand. However, mo…

Accurately detecting emotions in conversation is a necessary yet challenging task due to the complexity of emotions and dynamics in dialogues. The emotional state of a speaker can be influenced by many different factors, such as interlocutor stimulus, dialogue scene, and topic. In this work, we propose a conversational speech emotion recognition method to deal with capturing attentive contextual dependency and speaker-sensitive interactions. First, we use a pretrained VGGish model to extract segment-based audio representation in individual utterances. Second, an attentive bi-directional gated …
Emotion Cause Extraction in Conversations (ECEC) aims to extract the utterances which contain the emotional cause in conversations. Most prior research focuses on modelling conversational contexts with sequential encoding, ignoring the informative interactions between utterances and conversational-specific features for ECEC. In this paper, we investigate the importance of discourse structures in handling utterance interactions and conversationspecific features for ECEC. To this end, we propose a discourse-aware model (DAM) for this task. Concretely, we jointly model ECEC with discourse parsing…

Emotional language generation is one of the keys to human-like artificial intelligence. Humans use different type of emotions depending on the situation of the conversation. Emotions also play an important role in mediating the engagement level with conversational partners. However, current conversational agents do not effectively account for emotional content in the language generation process. To address this problem, we develop a language modeling approach that generates affective content when the dialogue is situated in a given context. We use the recently released Empathetic-Dialogues cor…
Current research in dialogue systems is focused on conversational assistants working on short conversations in either task-oriented or open domain settings. In this paper, we focus on improving task-based conversational assistants online, primarily those working on document-type conversations (e.g., emails) whose contents may or may not be completely related to the assistant's task. We propose "NARLE" a deep reinforcement learning (RL) framework for improving the natural language understanding (NLU) component of dialogue systems online without the need to collect human labels for customer data…

Our proposed system automatically extracts the popular latent topics in conversations regarding demonetization discussed in Twitter via the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based topic model and …
Causal Emotion Entailment (CEE) aims to discover the potential causes behind an emotion in a conversational utterance. Previous works formalize CEE as independent utterance pair classification problems, with emotion and speaker information neglected. From a new perspective, this paper considers CEE in a joint framework. We classify multiple utterances synchronously to capture the correlations between utterances in a global view and propose a Two-Stream Attention Model (TSAM) to effectively model the speaker's emotional influences in the conversational history. Specifically, the TSAM comprises …

Emotion Recognition in Conversations (ERC) has gained increasing attention for developing empathetic machines. Recently, many approaches have been devoted to perceiving conversational context by deep learning models. However, these approaches are insufficient in understanding the context due to lacking the ability to extract and integrate emotional clues. In this work, we propose novel Contextual Reasoning Networks (DialogueCRN) to fully understand the conversational context from a cognitive perspective. Inspired by the Cognitive Theory of Emotion, we design multi-turn reasoning modules to ext…
The recognition of emotion and dialogue acts enriches conversational analysis and help to build natural dialogue systems. Emotion interpretation makes us understand feelings and dialogue acts reflect the intentions and performative functions in the utterances. However, most of the textual and multi-modal conversational emotion corpora contain only emotion labels but not dialogue acts. To address this problem, we propose to use a pool of various recurrent neural models trained on a dialogue act corpus, with and without context. These neural models annotate the emotion corpora with dialogue act …

Emotion dynamics modeling is a significant task in emotion recognition in conversation. It aims to predict conversational emotions when building empathetic dialogue systems. Existing studies mainly develop models based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). They cannot benefit from the power of the recently-developed pre-training strategies for better token representation learning in conversations. More seriously, it is hard to distinguish the dependency of interlocutors and the emotional influence among interlocutors by simply assembling the features on top of RNNs. In this paper, we develop a …

Multimodal emotion recognition is a challenging research area that aims to fuse different modalities to predict human emotion. However, most existing models that are based on attention mechanisms have difficulty in learning emotionally relevant parts on their own. To solve this problem, we propose to incorporate external emotion-related knowledge in the co-attention based fusion of pre-trained models. To effectively incorporate this knowledge, we enhance the co-attention model with a Bayesian attention module (BAM) where a prior distribution is estimated using the emotion-related knowledge. Ex…
This paper presents a novel application of speech emotion recognition: estimation of the level of conversational engagement between users of a voice communication system. We begin by using machine learning techniques, such as the support vector machine (SVM), to classify users' emotions as expressed in individual utterances. However, this alone fails to model the temporal and interactive aspects of conversational engagement. We therefore propose the use of a multilevel structure based on coupled hidden Markov models (HMM) to estimate engagement levels in continuous natural speech. The first le…
