Experimental and theoretical studies of nonlinear frequency combs in χ^(3) optical microresonators attracted tremendous research interest during the last decade and resulted in prototypes of solitonbased steadily working devices. Realization of similar combs owing to χ^(2) optical nonlinearity promises new breakthroughs and is a big scientific challenge. We analyze the main obstacles for realization of the χ^(2) frequency combs in high-Q microresonators and propose two families of steadystate nonlinear solutions, including soliton and periodic solutions, for such combs. Despite generic periodicity of light fields inside microresonators, the nonlinear solutions can be topologically different and relevant to periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. The found particular solutions exist owing to a large difference in the group velocities between the first and second harmonics, typical of χ^(2) microresonators, and to the presence of the pump. They have no zero-pump counterparts relevant to conservative solitons. Stability issue for the found comb solutions remains open and requires further numerical analysis.
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators, benefitting from the ultrahigh quality (Q) factors and small mode volumes, could considerably enhance the light-matter interaction, making it an ideal platform for studying a broad range of nonlinear optical effects. In this review, the progress of optical nonlinear effects in WGM microresonators is comprehensively summarized. First, several basic nonlinear effects in WGM microresonator are reviewed, including not only Pockels effect and Kerr effect, but also harmonic generations, four-wave mixing and stimulated optical scattering effects. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the chaotic regime of optical frequency combs generated in nonlinear ring microresonators pumped with continuous wave light. We show that the chaotic regime reveals itself, in an apparently counter-intuitive way, by a flat top symmetric envelope of the frequency spectrum, when observed by means of an optical spectrum analyzer. The comb demodulated on a fast photodiode produces a noisy radio frequency signal with an spectral width significantly exceeding the linear bandwidth of the microresonator mode.
A shaped doublet pump pulse is proposed for simultaneous octave-spanning soliton Kerr frequency comb generation and second-harmonic conversion in a single microresonator. The temporal soliton in the cavity is trapped atop a doublet pulse pedestal, resulting in a greatly expanded soliton region compared to that with a general Gaussian pulse pump. The possibility of single-microresonator comb self-referencing in a single silicon nitride microring, which can facilitate compact on-chip optical clocks, is demonstrated via simulation.
We investigate frequency comb generation in the presence of polarization effects induced by nonlinear mode coupling in microresonator devices. A set of coupled temporal Lugiato-Lefever equations are derived to model the propagation dynamics, and an in-depth study is made of the modulational instability of their multistable homogeneous steady-state solutions. It is shown that new kinds of instabilities can occur for co-propagating fields that interact through nonlinear cross-phase modulation. These instabilities display properties that differ from their scalar counterpart, and are shown to resu…

Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the no…
We study optical parametric oscillations in Kerr-nonlinear microresonators, revealing an intricate solution space -- parameterized by the pump-to-signal conversion efficiency -- that arises from an interplay of nonlinear processes. Using a three-mode approximation, we derive an efficiency-maximizing relation between pump power and frequency mismatch. To move beyond a three-mode approximation, a necessity for geometries such as integrated microring resonators, we numerically simulate the Lugiato-Lefever Equation that accounts for the full spectrum of nonlinearly-coupled resonator modes. We obse…
The Kerr effect in optical microresonators plays an important role for integrated photonic devices and enables third harmonic generation, four-wave mixing, and the generation of microresonator-based frequency combs. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the Kerr nonlinearity can split ultra-high-Q microresonator resonances for two continuous-wave lasers. The resonance splitting is induced by self- and cross-phase modulation and counter-intuitively enables two lasers at different wavelengths to be simultaneously resonant in the same microresonator mode. We develop a pump-probe spectroscopy sc…
Soliton microcombs based on Kerr nonlinearity in microresonators have been a prominent miniaturized coherent light source. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the existence of Kerr solitons in an optomechanical microresonator, for which a nonlinear model is built by incorporating a single mechanical mode and multiple optical modes. Interestingly, an exotic vibrational Kerr soliton state is found, which is modulated by a self-sustained mechanical oscillation. Besides, the soliton provides extra mechanical gain through the optical spring effect, and results in phonon lasing with a red-detun…
Guided-mode coupling in a microresonator generally manifests itself through avoided crossings of the corresponding resonances. This coupling can strongly modify the resonator local effective dispersion by creating two branches that have dispersions of opposite sign in spectral regions that would otherwise be characterized by either positive (normal) or negative (anomalous) dispersion. In this paper, we study, both analytically and computationally, the general properties of nonlinear frequency comb generation at an avoided crossing using the coupled Lugiato-Lefever equation. In particular, we f…
Optical frequency combs are revolutionising modern time and frequency metrology. In the past years, their range of applications has increased substantially, driven by their miniaturisation through microresonator-based solutions. The combs in such devices are typically generated using the third-order $χ^{(3)}$-nonlinearity of the resonator material. An alternative approach is making use of second-order $χ^{(2)}$-nonlinearities. While the idea of generating combs this way has been around for almost two decades, so far only few demonstrations are known, based either on bulky bow-tie cavities or o…
High confinement, integrated silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides have recently emerged as attractive platform for on-chip nonlinear optical devices. The fabrication of high-Q SiN microresonators with anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD) has enabled broadband nonlinear optical frequency comb generation. Such frequency combs have been successfully applied in coherent communication and ultrashort pulse generation. However, the reliable fabrication of high confinement waveguides from stoichiometric, high stress SiN remains challenging. Here we present a novel photonic Damascene fabrication proce…
We demonstrate a novel optical microresonator gyroscope whose responsivity to rotation is enhanced by a factor of around $10^4$ by operating close to the critical point of a spontaneous symmetry breaking transition between counterpropagating light. We present a proof-of-principle rotation measurement using a resonator with a diameter of 3 mm. In addition, we characterise the dynamical response of the system to a sinusoidally varying rotation, and show this to be well described by a simple theoretical model. We observe the universal critical behaviors of responsivity enhancement and critical sl…
Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) is an ever-maturing integrated platform for nonlinear optics. Yet, due to the absence of second-order ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity, Si$_3$N$_4$ is mostly considered for third-order ($χ^{(3)}$) nonlinear interactions. Recently, this limitation was overcome by optical poling in both Si$_3$N$_4$ waveguides and microresonators via the photogalvanic effect, resulting in the inscription of quasi-phase-matched $χ^{(2)}$ gratings. Here, we report cascaded nonlinear effects in a normal dispersion Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonator with combined $χ^{(2)}$ and $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearities. …
We introduce the generalized Lugiato-Lefever equation describing nonlinear effects in the bottle microresonators. We demonstrate that the nonlinear modes of these resonators can form multiple coexisting and overlapping nonlinear resonances and that their instabilities lead to the generation of the low repetition rate frequency combs.
We explore the dynamical response of dissipative Kerr solitons to changes in pump power and detuning and show how thermal and nonlinear processes couple these parameters to the frequency-comb degrees of freedom. Our experiments are enabled by a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) stabilization approach that provides on-demand, radiofrequency control of the frequency comb. PDH locking not only guides Kerr-soliton formation from a cold microresonator, but opens a path to decouple the repetition and carrier-envelope-offset frequencies. In particular, we demonstrate phase stabilization of both Kerr-comb degre…
Low loss microresonators have revolutionised nonlinear and quantum optics over the past decade. In particular, microresonators with the second order, chi(2), nonlinearity have the advantages of broad spectral tunability and low power frequency conversion. Recent observations have highlighted that the parametric frequency conversion in chi(2) microresonators is accompanied by stepwise changes in the signal and idler frequencies. Therefore, a better understanding of the mechanisms and development of the theory underpinning this behaviour is timely. Here, we report that the stepwise frequency con…
Photonic integrated microcombs have enabled advanced applications in optical communication, microwave synthesis, and optical metrology, which in nature unveil an optical dissipative soliton pattern under cavity-enhanced nonlinear processes. The most decisive factor of microcombs lies in the photonic material platforms, where materials with high nonlinearity and in capacity of high-quality chip integration are highly demanded. In this work, we present a home-developed chalcogenide glasses-Ge25Sb10S65 (GeSbS) for the nonlinear photonic integration and for the dissipative soliton microcomb genera…
We study the linear and nonlinear response of a unidirectional reflector where a nonlinear breaking of the Lorentz reciprocity is observed. The device under test consists of a racetrack microresonator, with an embedded S-shaped waveguide, coupled to an external bus waveguide (BW). This geometry of the microresonator, known as "taiji" microresonator (TJMR), allows to selectively couple counter-propagating modes depending on the propagation direction of the incident light and, at the nonlinear level, leads to an effective breaking of Lorentz reciprocity. Here, we show that a full description of …
The phenomenon of synchronization occurs universally across the natural sciences and provides critical insight into the behavior of coupled nonlinear dynamical systems. It also offers a powerful approach to robust frequency or temporal locking in diverse applications including communications, superconductors, and photonics. Here we report the experimental synchronization of two coupled soliton modelocked chip-based frequency combs separated over distances of 20 m. We show that such a system obeys the universal Kuramoto model for synchronization and that the cavity solitons from the microresona…
We investigate the effects of Raman and Kerr gain in crystalline microresonators and determine the conditions required to generate modelocked frequency combs. We show theoretically that strong, narrowband Raman gain determines a maximum microresonator size allowable to achieve comb formation. We verify this condition experimentally in diamond and silicon microresonators and show that there exists a competition between Raman and Kerr effects that leads to the existence of two different comb states.

We numerically study, by means of the single envelope equation, the generation of optical frequency combs ranging from the visible to the mid-infrared spectral regions in resonators with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Phase-matched quadratic wave-mixing processes among the comb lines can be activated by low-power continuous wave pumping in the near infrared of a radially poled lithium niobate whispering gallery resonator (WGR). We examine both separate and co-existing intra-cavity doubly resonant second-harmonic generation and parametric oscillation processes, and find that modulation ins…
Optical frequency combs are key to optical precision measurements. While most frequency combs operate in the near-infrared regime, many applications require combs at mid-infrared, visible or even ultra-violet wavelengths. Frequency combs can be transferred to other wavelengths via nonlinear optical processes, however, this becomes exceedingly challenging for high-repetition rate frequency combs. Here, it is demonstrated that a synchronously driven high-Q microresonator with a second-order optical nonlinearity can efficiently convert high-repetition rate near-infrared frequency combs to visible…
Continuous-wave laser driven Kerr-nonlinear, optical microresonators have enabled a variety of novel applications and phenomena including the generation of optical frequency combs, ultra-low noise microwaves, as well as, ultra-short optical pulses. In this work we break with the paradigm of the continuous-wave optical drive and use instead periodic, pico-second optical pulses. We observe the deterministic generation of stable femtosecond dissipative cavity solitons on-top of the resonantly enhanced driving pulse. Surprisingly, the soliton pulse locks to the driving pulse enabling direct all-op…
We observe a transition to a coherent-comb state in a SiN-microresonator with anomalous dispersion. Although ~300 fs pulse trains are generated after line-by-line shaping, the intensity within the microring does not appear to be pulse-like.
Mid-infrared (mid-IR) frequency combs have broad applications in molecular spectroscopy and chemical/biological sensing. Recently developed microresonator-based combs in this wavelength regime could enable portable and robust devices using a single-frequency pump field. Here, we report the first demonstration of a modelocked microresonator-based frequency comb in the mid-IR spanning 2.4 μm to 4.3 μm. We observe high pump-to-comb conversion efficiency, in which 40% of the pump power is converted to the output comb power. Utilizing an integrated PIN structure allows for tuning the silicon micror…
We report the first demonstration of thermally controlled soliton modelocked frequency comb generation in microresonators. By controlling the electric current through heaters integrated with silicon nitride microresonators, we demonstrate a systematic and repeatable pathway to single- and multi-soliton modelocked states without adjusting the pump laser wavelength. Such an approach could greatly simplify the generation of modelocked frequency combs and facilitate applications such as chip-based dual-comb spectroscopy.
A study is made of the nonlinear dynamics of dual pumped microresonator Kerr frequency combs described by a driven and damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation, with an additional degree of freedom in the form of the modulation frequency. A truncated four wave model is derived for the pump modes and the dominant sideband pair which is found to be able to describe much of the essential dynamical behaviour of the full equation. The stability of stationary states within the four wave model is investigated and numerical simulations are made to demonstrate that a large range of solutions, including ca…
Chalcogenide glass (ChG) is an attractive material for integrated nonlinear photonics due to its wide transparency and high nonlinearity, and its capability of being directly deposited and patterned on Silicon wafer substrates. It has a singular Raman effect among amorphous materials. Yet, the Raman lasing performance in high quality and chip integrated ChG microresonators remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate an engineered Raman lasing dynamic based on home developed photonic integrated high-Q ChG microresonators. With a quality factor above 10^6, we achieve the record-low lasing threshold…
We demonstrate that flat-topped dissipative solitonic pulses, platicons, and corresponding frequency combs can be excited in optical microresonators with normal group velocity dispersion using either amplitude modulation of the pump or bichromatic pump. Soft excitation may occur in particular frequency range if modulation depth is large enough and modulation frequency is close to the free spectral range of the microresonator.
We investigate theoretically frequency comb generation in a bottle microresonator accounting for the azimuthal and axial degrees of freedom. We first identify a discrete set of the axial nonlinear modes of a bottle microresonator that appear as tilted resonances bifurcating from the spectrum of linear axial modes. We then study azimuthal modulational instability of these modes and show that families of 2D soliton states localized both azimuthally and axially bifurcate from them at critical pump frequencies. Depending on detuning, 2D solitons can be either stable, or form persistent breathers, …
The generation of temporal cavity solitons in microresonators results in low-noise optical frequency combs which are critical for applications in spectroscopy, astronomy, navigation or telecommunications. Breather solitons also form an important part of many different classes of nonlinear wave systems with a localized temporal structure that exhibits oscillatory behavior. To date, the dynamics of breather solitons in microresonators remains largely unexplored, and its experimental characterization is challenging. Here, we demonstrate the excitation of breather solitons in two different microre…
Kerr frequency combs generated from microresonators are the subject of intense study. Most research employs microresonators with anomalous dispersion, for which modulation instability is believed to play a key role in initiation of the comb. Comb generation in normal dispersion microresonators has also been reported but is less well understood. Here we report a detailed investigation of few-moded, normal dispersion silicon nitride microresonators, showing that mode coupling can strongly modify the local dispersion, even changing its sign. We demonstrate a link between mode coupling and initiat…
Optical microresonators with high quality ($Q$) factors are essential to a wide range of integrated photonic devices. Steady efforts have been directed towards increasing microresonator $Q$ factors across a variety of platforms. With success in reducing microfabrication process-related optical loss as a limitation of $Q$, the ultimate attainable $Q$, as determined solely by the constituent microresonator material absorption, has come into focus. Here, we report measurements of the material-limited $Q$ factors in several photonic material platforms. High-$Q$ microresonators are fabricated from …
Microresonator frequency combs based on the $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearity are nowadays well understood and making their way into different applications. Recently, microresonator frequency combs based on the $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity are receiving increasing attention, as they promise certain benefits, but still require further study. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a $χ^{(2)}$ frequency comb, initiated via optical parametric oscillation (OPO) in a lithium niobate mm-sized microresonator. By pumping at 532 nm with 30 $μ$W of power, we observe 1-THz-wide comb spectra around 1064 nm with degenerate …
We perform the first theoretical modeling of the spectral-temporal dynamics of parametric microresonator comb generation with octave-spanning bandwidths through use of the Lugiato-Lefever model extended to include higher-order dispersion and self-steepening. We show that three distinct stages are necessary to achieve single-pulse modelocking and ultrabroadband, stabilized combs. Our simulations agree well with previous experimental demonstrations and predict many of the observed features, including multi-pulse generation, dispersive wave generation, modelocking and comb stabilization.
We propose a new type of broadband and low repetition rate frequency comb generator which has the shape of an elongated and nanoscale-shallow optical bottle microresonator created at the surface of an optical fiber. The free spectral range (FSR) of the broadband azimuthal eigenfrequency series of this resonator is the exact multiple of the FSR of the dense and narrowband axial series. The effective radius variation of the microresonator is close to a parabola with a nanoscale height which is greater or equal to lambda/2pi*n0 (here lambda is the characteristic radiation wavelength and n0 is the…
We demonstrate control and stabilization of an optical frequency comb generated by four-wave mixing in a monolithic microresonator with a mode spacing in the microwave regime (86 GHz). The comb parameters (mode spacing and offset frequency) are controlled via the power and the frequency of the pump laser, which constitutes one of the comb modes. Furthermore, generation of a microwave beat note at the comb's mode spacing frequency is presented, enabling direct stabilization to a microwave frequency standard.
A high-Q silica whispering-gallery mode microresonator is an attractive platform on which to demonstrate a broad and phase-locked Raman comb in various wavelength regimes. Raman combs can be used for applications such as compact pulse laser sources, sensors, optical clocks, and coherence tomography. However, the formation dynamics of a Raman comb has not been well exploited. Here we study the dynamics of the Raman comb formation in silica rod microresonators, which have cavity free spectral ranges in microwave rates. We generated a Raman comb with a smooth spectral envelope and also observed t…
Recent developments demonstrate that parametric four-wave mixing (FWM) in high-Q microresonators is a highly promising and effective approach for optical frequency comb generation, with applications including spectroscopy, optical clocks, arbitrary waveform generation, frequency metrology, and astronomical spectrograph calibration. Each of these microresonator platforms utilizes a scheme in which the system is pumped by a single-frequency laser at a cavity resonance. This scheme requires tuning of the pump wavelength into resonance and the generated comb is susceptible to fluctuations in pump …
Microresonator based optical frequency combs (MFC) have demonstrated promise in extending the capabilities of optical frequency combs. Here we demonstrate all optical stabilization of a low noise temporal soliton based MFC in a crystalline resonator via a new technique to control the repetition rate. This is accomplished by thermally heating the microresonator with an additional probe laser coupled to an auxiliary optical resonator mode. The offset frequency is controlled by stabilization of the pump laser frequency to a reference optical frequency comb. We analyze the stabilization by perform…
Octave-wide frequency combs in microresonators are essential for self-referencing. However, it is difficult for the small-size and high-repetition-rate microresonators to achieve perfect soliton modelocking over the broad frequency range due to the detrimental impact of dispersion. Here we examine the stability of the soliton states consisting of one hundred modes in silicon-nitride microresonators with the one-THz free spectral range. We report the coexistence of fast and slow solitons in a narrow detuning range, which is surrounded on either side by the breather states. We decompose the brea…
We demonstrate the first low-noise mid-IR frequency comb source using a silicon microresonator. Our observation of strong Raman scattering lines in the generated comb suggests that Raman and four-wave mixing interactions play a role in assisting the transition to the low-noise state. In addition, we characterize, the intracavity comb generation dynamics using an integrated PIN diode, which takes advantage of the inherent three-photon absorption process in silicon.
The optical microresonators reviewed in this paper are called bottle microresonators because their profile often resembles an elongated spheroid or a microscopic bottle. These resonators are commonly fabricated from an optical fiber by variation of its radius. Generally, variation of the bottle microresonator (BMR) radius along the fiber axis can be quite complex presenting, e.g., a series of coupled BMRs positioned along the fiber. Similar to optical spherical and toroidal microresonators, BMRs support whispering gallery modes (WGMs) which are localized inside the resonator due to the effect …
Recent experiments have demonstrated the generation of widely-spaced parametric sidebands that can evolve into "clustered" optical frequency combs in Kerr microresonators. Here we describe the physics that underpins the formation of such clustered comb states. In particular, we show that the phase-matching required for the initial sideband generation is such that (at least) one of the sidebands experiences anomalous dispersion, enabling that sideband to drive frequency comb formation via degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing. We validate our proposal through a combination of experimen…
Thermal noise is ubiquitous in microscopic systems and in high-precision measurements. Controlling thermal noise, especially using laser light to apply dissipation, substantially affects science in revealing the quantum regime of gases, in searching for fundamental physics, and in realizing practical applications. Recently, nonlinear light-matter interactions in microresonators have opened up new classes of microscopic devices. A key example is Kerr-microresonator frequency combs; so-called soliton microcombs not only explore nonlinear science but also enable integrated-photonics devices, such…
The realization of ultrahigh quality (Q) resonators regardless of the underpinning material platforms has been a ceaseless pursuit, because the high Q resonators provide an extreme environment of storage of light to enable observations of many unconventional nonlinear optical phenomenon with high efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-high Q factor (7.1*10^6) microresonator on the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator (4H-SiCOI) platform in which both \c{hi}^(2) and \c{hi}^(3) nonlinear processes of high efficiencies have been generated. Broadband frequency conversions, including second-, third…
Solitons occur in many physical systems when a nonlinearity compensates wave dispersion. Their recent formation in microresonators opens a new research direction for nonlinear optical physics and provides a platform for miniaturization of spectroscopy and frequency metrology systems. These microresonator solitons orbit around a closed waveguide path and produce a repetitive output pulse stream at a rate set by the round-trip time. In this work counter-propagating solitons that simultaneously orbit in an opposing sense (clockwise/counter-clockwise) are studied. Despite sharing the same spatial …
