In this research, we are going to design a neural nonlinear predictive functional controller (PFC) to achieve a reduced fuel consumption for a chosen autonomous car walks according to a supplied speed trajectory on known roads. We used a fitting neural network as a simple tool for modelling the car's engine and control laws needed to calculate the suitable control commands passed to the brakes and gas pedals' actuators. Independent model method and constraints handling are used to provide controller robustness. We used MATLAB Simulink and IPG CarMaker to design and test our PFC controller. The performance of designed PFC controller is compared to the performance of a PI controller which exists within IPG CarMaker simulator. This work is associated with the use of parallel feedforward compensators (PFCs) for the problem of output synchronization over heterogeneous agents and the benefits this approach can provide. Specifically, it addresses the addition of stable PFCs on agents that interact with each other using diffusive couplings. The value in the application of such PFC is twofold. Firstly, it has been an issue that output synchronization among passivity-short systems requires global information for the design of controllers in the cases when initial conditions need to be taken into account, such as average co…

This paper presents a systematic method for the selection of the Model Predictive Control (MPC) stage cost. We match the MPC feedback law to a proportional-integral (PI) controller, which we efficiently tune by high-performance Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The PI tuning offers a wide range of tuning possibilities that is then inherited by the MPC design. The MC simulation tuning of the PI controller is based on the minimization of two different objectives; 1) the 2-norm tracking error, and 2) a bi-objective consisting of the 2-norm tracking error and a 2-norm input rate of movement penalty. We…
In this work we present a workflow for designing two linear control techniques applied to the dynamic system quadruple inverted pendulum mounted on a cart (QIP) where the steady state error on cart position is eliminated through a precompensation gain. The first control law designed was based on LQR, technique that stabilizes the system states based on a minimization of the total energy of the system states and the second control technique was pole placement by 2nd order system approximation, this method allowed to define a settling time and overshoot of the desired response of the plant, for …
Single-lane car-following is a fundamental task in autonomous driving. A desirable car-following controller should keep a reasonable range of distances to the preceding vehicle and do so as smoothly as possible. To achieve this, numerous control methods have been proposed: some only rely on local sensing; others also make use of non-local downstream observations. While local methods are capable of attenuating high-frequency velocity oscillation and are economical to compute, non-local methods can dampen a wider spectrum of oscillatory traffic but incur a larger cost in computing. In this artic…

This paper proposes an adaptable path tracking control system based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) for autonomous cars. A four-parameter controller shapes the behavior of the vehicle to navigate on lane changes and roundabouts. The tuning of the tracker uses an educated Q-Learning algorithm to minimize the lateral and steering trajectory errors. The CARLA simulation environment was used both for training and testing. The results show the vehicle is able to adapt its behavior to the different types of reference trajectories, navigating safely with low tracking errors. The use of a ROS bridge be…
Battery energy storage boosts up the response speed of power system frequency regulation, but must be recharged carefully to minimize the distortion to the frequency regulation response. This paper proposes a nonlinear feedback controller to optimize the recharge for storage resources in frequency regulation. This controller is designed using a data-driven best-hindsight optimization framework, the resulting nonlinear recharge controller's gain depends on the storage state of charge as well as its power and energy rating. The developed controller is compared with two benchmark automatic genera…
Current commercial adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems consist of an upper-level planner controller that decides the optimal trajectory that should be followed, and a low-level controller in charge of sending the gas/brake signals to the mechanical system to actually move the vehicle. We find that the low-level controller has a significant impact on the string stability (SS) even if the planner is string stable: (i) a slow controller deteriorates the SS, (ii) slow controllers are common as they arise from insufficient control gains, from a "weak" gas/brake system or both, and (iii) the integ…
This paper investigates the longitudinal control problem in a dynamic traffic environment where driving scenarios change between free-driving scenarios and car-following scenarios. A comprehensive longitudinal controller is proposed to ensure reasonable transient response and steady-state response in scenarios changes, which is independent of planning algorithms. This design takes into account passenger comfort, safety concerns and disturbance rejections, and attempts to meet the requirement of lower cost, faster response, increased comfort, enhanced safety and elevated extendability from the …
Encrypted control enables confidential controller evaluations in cloud-based or networked control systems. From a technical point of view, an encrypted controller is a modified control algorithm that is capable of computing encrypted control actions based on encrypted system outputs. Unsurprisingly, encrypted implementations of controllers using, e.g., homomorphic cryptosystems entail new design challenges. For instance, in order to avoid overflow or high computational loads, only a finite number of operations should be carried out on encrypted data. Clearly, this guideline is hard to satisfy …
This paper provides a constructive passivity-based control approach to solve the set-point regulation problem for input-affine continuous nonlinear systems while considering saturation in the inputs. As customarily in passivity-based control, the methodology consists of two steps: energy shaping and damping injection. In terms of applicability, the proposed controllers have two advantages concerning other passivity-based control techniques: (i) the energy shaping is carried out without solving partial differential equations, and (ii) the damping injection is performed without measuring the pas…
Although the application of Series elastic actuators (SEAs) in the biomechatronic field has proved its appropriation in many aspects so far, the problems of maintaining the stability for the SEAs still remains. This paper proposes a robust controller so that to overcome the drawbacks of the previous researches. Firstly, a mathematical model considering both the SEAs and the hip joint of humanoid UXA-90 is obtained. Secondly, a reference input of the proposed controller that is achieved from desired hip joint's angle in a walking cycle is utilized. Then, a backstepping based sliding mode force …
Vehicle stability control systems are important components of active safety systems for road transport. The problem of vehicle lateral stability control is addressed in this paper using active front wheel steering and individual braking. Vehicle lateral stability control means keeping the vehicle yaw rate and the vehicle side slip angle in desired values. For this reason, a model-based controller is designed. The desired yaw rate is obtained from the single track vehicle model and the desired side slip angle is chosen as zero. Controller design consists of two parts, lower and upper controller…
In this paper we consider multi-agent navigation with collision avoidance using Control Barrier Functions (CBF). In the case of non-communicating agents, we consider trade-offs between level of safety guarantee and liveness - the ability to reach destination in short time without large detours or gridlock. We compare several CBF-based driving policies against the benchmark established by the Centralized controller that requires communication. One of the policies (CCS2) being compared is new and straddles the space between policies with only local control available and a more complex Predictor-…
Based on a series of two experimental campaigns testing advanced controllers on a scaled wind turbine operating in a wind tunnel, this contribution describes the overall experimental method, challenges faced, lessons learned, and opportunities for future work. The two campaigns, run in Fall 2018 and Fall 2019, tested unconstrained and constrained optimal blade pitch controllers, respectively, using preview disturbance measurements of the oncoming wind. Specifically, the first study considered an extension to the linear-quadratic regulator to include feedforward action, while the second deploye…

With the advent of intelligent transport, quadrotors are becoming an attractive solution while lifting or dropping payloads during emergency evacuations, construction works, etc. During such operations, dynamic variations in (possibly unknown) payload cause considerable changes in the system dynamics. However, a systematic control solution to tackle such varying dynamical behaviour is still missing. In this work, two control solutions are proposed to solve two specific problems in aerial transportation of payload, as mentioned below. In the first work, we explore the tracking control problem f…
