The charge density wave in the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) is now known to have two different ordering tendencies differentiated by their $c$-axis correlations. These correspond to ferro- (F-CDW) and antiferro- (AF-CDW) couplings between CDW in neighbouring CuO$_2$ bilayers. This discovery has prompted a number of fundamental questions. For example, how does superconductivity adjust to two competing orders and are either of these orders responsible for the electronic reconstruction? Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to study YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We show that regions of the sample with F-CDW correlations suppress superconductivity more strongly than those with AF-CDW correlations. This implies that an inhomogeneous superconducting state exists, in which some regions show a weak or fragile form of superconductivity. By comparison of F-CDW and AF-CDW correlation lengths, it is furthermore concluded that F-CDW ordering is sufficiently long-range to modify the electronic structure. Our study thus suggests that F-CDW correlations have an important impact on superconducting and normal state properties of underdoped YBCO.
We report that in YBa2Cu3Oy and La2-xSrxCuO4 there is a spatially inhomogeneous response to magnetic field for temperatures T extending well above the bulk superconducting transition temperature Tc. An inhomogeneous magnetic response is observed above Tc even in ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.50, which has highly ordered doping. The degree of the field inhomogeneity above Tc tracks the hole doping dependences of both Tc and the density of the superconducting carriers below Tc, and therefore is apparently coupled to superconductivity.
We describe from advanced first principles calculations the energetics of oxygen doping and its relation to insulator-metal transitions in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We find a strong tendency of doping oxygens to order into non-magnetic Cu$^{1+}$O$_x$ chains at any $x$. Ordering produces one-dimensional metallic bands, while configurations with non-aligned oxygens are insulating. The Cu$^{2+}$O$_2$ planes remain insulating and antiferromagnetic up to a threshold between $x$=0.25 and 0.5, above which a paramagnetic normal-metal state prevails. The in-plane antiferro-paramagnetic competi…
An experimental study of proximity effect in La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 - YBa2Cu3O7 - La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 trilayers is reported. Transport measurements on these samples show clear oscillations in critical current (I_c) as the thickness of La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 layers (d_F) is scanned from ~ 50 A to ~ 1100 A. In the light of existing theories of ferromagnet-superconductor (FM-SC) heterostructures, this observation suggests a long range proximity effect in the manganite, modulated by it's weak exchange energy (~ 2 meV). The observed modulation of the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic LSMO la…
Superconductivity often emerges in the proximity of, or in competition with, symmetry breaking ground states such as antiferromagnetism or charge density waves (CDW)1-5. A number of materials in the cuprate family, which includes the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors, show spin and charge density wave order5-7. Thus a fundamental question is to what extent these ordered states exist for compositions close to optimal for superconductivity. Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to show that a CDW develops at zero field in the normal state of superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.67 (…
The competition between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates has now been widely reported, but the role of disorder in this competition has yet to be fully resolved. A central question is whether disorder sets the length scale of the CDW order, for instance by pinning charge density fluctuations or disrupting an otherwise long range order. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we investigate the sensitivity of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) to varying levels of oxygen disorder. We find that quench cooling YBCO$_{6.67}$ (YBCO$_{6.75}$) crystal…
Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby doping levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtain…
To explore the doping dependence of the recently discovered charge density wave (CDW) order in YBa2Cu3Oy, we present a bulk-sensitive high-energy x-ray study for several oxygen concentrations, including strongly underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.44. Combined with previous data around the so-called 1/8 doping, we show that bulk CDW order exists at least for hole concentrations (p) in the CuO2 planes of 0.078 <~ p <~ 0.132. This implies that CDW order exists in close vicinity to the quantum critical point for spin density wave (SDW) order. In contrast to the pseudogap temperature T*, the onset temperature of…
Using strain to uncover the interplay between two- and three-dimensional charge density waves in high-temperature superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{\rm{y}}$
We have used resonant x-ray scattering to determine the momentum dependent charge correlations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.55}$ samples with highly ordered chain arrays of oxygen acceptors (ortho-II structure). The results reveal nearly critical, biaxial charge density wave (CDW) correlations at in-plane wave vectors (0.315, 0) and (0, 0.325). The corresponding scattering intensity exhibits a strong uniaxial anisotropy. The CDW amplitude and correlation length are enhanced as superconductivity is weakened by an external magnetic field. Analogous experiments were carried out on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6…
The issues raised in the preceding comment of Bourges et al. [arXiv:1710.08173, Phys. Rev. B 98, 016501 (2018)] are shown to be unfounded. We highlight the complications caused by inhomogeneous beam polarization that can occur when using polarized neutron diffraction to detect small magnetic moments.
We study theoretically the chain and in-plane optical conductivities of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$. We elaborate that the chain is superconducting for $y>6.67$ while insulating for $y<6.67$ due to the competition between the plane-chain coupling and the antiferromagnetic order, corresponding to a superconductor-insulator transition. Stemming also from the coupling between the plane and chain, a new peak emerges at a low frequency in the in-plane spectra in the superconducting state, while it disappears in the normal state. Our scenario accounts satisfactorily for very recent experiments.
The electron-phonon interaction is a major factor influencing the competition between collective instabilities in correlated-electron materials, but its role in driving high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates remains poorly understood. We have used high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to monitor low-energy phonons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ (superconducting $\bf T_c = 61$ K), which is close to a charge density wave (CDW) instability. Phonons in a narrow range of momentum space around the CDW ordering vector exhibit extremely large superconductivity-induced lineshape renormaliza…
We study competitions between charge uniform and inhomogeneous states in two-dimensional Hubbard models by using a variational Monte Carlo method. At realistic parameters for cuprate superconductors, emergent effective attraction of carriers generated from repulsive Coulomb interaction leads to charge/spin stripe ground states, which severely compete with uniform superconducting excited states in the energy scale of 10 K for the cuprates. Stripe period increases with decreasing hole doping $δ$, which agrees with the experiments for La-based cuprates at $δ$ = 1/8. For lower $δ$, we find a phase…
There is increasing evidence that inhomogeneous distributions of charge and spin--so-called "striped phases"--play an important role in determining the properties of the high-temperature superconductors. For example, recent neutron-scattering measurements on the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ family of materials show both spin and charge fluctuations that are consistent with the striped-phase picture. But the fluctuations associated with a striped phase are expected to be one-dimensional, whereas the magnetic fluctuations observed to date appear to display two-dimensional symmetry. We show here that t…
Analysis of the a-b plane optical conductivity $σ_{ab}$ for both twinned and untwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ as a function of temperature and doping shows that below a well defined temperature T*, a dip in the spectrum systematically appears separating the infrared charge excitation spectrum into two components with distinct energy scales. The change from monotonic behaviour in $σ_{ab}$ is found to be concurrent with the onset of phonon anomalies in Raman and infrared spectra below T*. The optical data are suggested to be evidence for the appearance of an inhomogeneous distribution of car…
YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors (CCs) have achieved high critical current densities ($\textit{J}_{c}$) that can be further increased through the introduction of additional defects using particle irradiation. However, these gains are accompanied by increases in the flux creep rate, a manifestation of competition between the different types of defects. Here, we study this competition to better understand how to design pinning landscapes that simultaneously increase $\textit{J}_{c}$ and reduce creep. CCs grown by metal organic deposition show non-monotonic changes in the temperature-…
We study superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of oxygen-doped double-layer high-temperature superconductors YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (0 $\le$ $δ$ $\le$ 1) as a function of the oxygen dopant concentration ($δ$) and planar hole-doping concentration ($P_{pl}$). We find that $T_c$, while clearly influenced by the development of the chain ordering as seen in the $T_c$ $vs.$ $δ$ plot, lies on a universal curve originating at the critical hole concentration ($P_c$) = 1/16 in the $T_c$ $vs.$ $P_{pl}$ plot. Our analysis suggests that the universal behavior of $T_c$($P_{pl}$) can be understood i…
Spin-glass magnetism confined to individual weakly interacting vortices is detected in two different families of high-transition-temperature (T_c) superconductors, but only in samples on the low-doping side of the low-temperature normal state metal-to-insulator crossover (MIC). Our findings unravel the mystery of the MIC, but more importantly identify the true location of the field-induced quantum phase transition (QPT) in the superconducting state. The non-uniform appearance of magnetism in the vortex state favours a surprisingly exotic phase diagram, in which spatially inhomogeneous competin…
The existence of Josephson tunneling has been demonstrated between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and Pb with the current flowing along the c-axis of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. This is presumed to come from an s-wave component of the superconductivity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$, perhaps induced by the orthorhombic distortion. This hypothesis by itself appears to be in contradiction with experiments on twinned samples whose tunneling current does not follow random statistics. We present a theory which depends on a competition between the intertwin d-wave coupling and a relatively enhanced s-wave component …
Cuprate superconductors have a universal tendency to form charge density-wave (CDW) order which competes with superconductivity and is strongest at a doping $p \simeq 0.12$. Here we show that in the archetypal cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (YBCO) pressure suppresses charge order, but does not affect the pseudogap phase. This is based on transport measurements under pressure, which reveal that the onset of the pseudogap at $T^*$ is independent of pressure, while the negative Hall effect, a clear signature of CDW order in YBCO, is suppressed by pressure. We also find that pressure and magneti…
Observing how electronic states in solids react to a local symmetry breaking provides insight into their microscopic nature. A striking example is the formation of bound states when quasiparticles are scattered off defects. This is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors but not, in general, in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Here, we report the unforeseen observation of bound states when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. Bound states indeed produce an inhomogeneous pattern of the lo…
We propose a model and derive analytical expressions for conductivity in heterogeneous fully anisotropic conductors with ellipsoid superconducting inclusions. This model and calculations are useful to analyze the observed temperature dependence of conductivity anisotropy in various anisotropic superconductors, where superconductivity onset happens inhomogeneously in the form of isolated superconducting islands. The results are applied to explain the experimental data on resistivity above the transition temperature $T_c$ in the high-temperature superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_4O_8}$ and in the …
The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, …
Torque magnetization measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$ (YBCO) at doping $y=6.67$($p=0.12$), in DC fields ($B$) up to 33 T and temperatures down to 4.5 K, show that weak diamagnetism persists above the extrapolated irreversibility field $H_{\rm irr} (T=0) \approx 24$ T. The differential susceptibility $dM/dB$, however, is more rapidly suppressed for $B\gtrsim 16$ T than expected from the properties of the low field superconducting state, and saturates at a low value for fields $B \gtrsim 24$ T. In addition, torque measurements on a $p=0.11$ YBCO crystal in pulsed field up to 65 T and tempera…
We report the results of a muon spin rotation (muSR) study of the bulk of Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu2O{8+δ}, as well as pure and Ca-doped YBa2Cu3Oy, which together with prior measurements reveal a universal inhomogeneous magnetic-field response of hole-doped cuprates extending to temperatures far above the critical temperature (Tc). The primary features of our data are incompatible with the spatially inhomogeneous response being dominated by known charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) orders. Instead the normal-state inhomogeneous line broadening is found to scale with the maximum valu…
We perform a numerical simulation of a three-band Hubbard model with two CuO$_2$ planes and a single CuO chain layer for YBCO cuprates. The spin-fluctuation mediated pairing interaction is computed within the multiband random-phase approximation, and its pairing eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are solved as a function of chain state filling factor $n_c$. We find that for the intrinsic value of $n_c$ in YBCO samples, one obtains the usual $d$-wave pairing symmetry. However, if we dope the chain layers with holes, while keeping the plane states doping fixed, the leading pairing symmetry solution …
The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed of alternating YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ and La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 nm to 20 nm while the thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. We clearly observe that the superconducting condensate density in the superconducting state of superlattice is drastically reduced by the magnetic subsystem which may be connected with proximity effects that distort the gap symme…
The competition between intrinsic disorder in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) thin films and an ultradense triangular lattice of cylindrical pinning centers spaced at 30 nm intervals results in an ordered Bose glass phase of vortices. The samples were created by scanning the focused beam of a helium-ion microscope over the surface of the YBCO thin film to form columns of point defects where superconductivity was locally suppressed. The voltage-current isotherms reveal critical behavior and scale in the vicinity of the second-order glass transition. The latter exhibits a disti…
We report on magnetic measurements carried out in a textured YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and YBa$_2$(Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$)$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (at $x \approx$ 0.02) crystals. The so-called fishtail-effect (FE) or second magnetization peak has been observed in a wide temperature range 0.4~$<T/T_c<$~0.8 for $\textbf{H}\parallel c$. The origin of the FE arises for the competition between surface barrier and bulk pinning. This is confirmed in a non-monotonically behavior of the relaxation rate $R$. The value $H_{max}$ for Ag-doped crystals is larger than for the pure one due to the presence of additional pinning …
In this communication we consider the doping dependence of the strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the cuprate superconductors. We investigate the effect of an incommensurate magnetic response, as recently observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments on several YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} compounds, on the spin-lattice and spin-echo relaxation rates measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. We conclude that a consistent theoretical description of INS and NMR can be reached if one assumes spatially inhomogeneous but locally commensurate spin correlations and that NM…
We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneo…
Cooperation and competition between the antiferromagnetic, d-wave superconducting and Mott-insulating states are explored for the two-dimensional Hubbard model including nearest and next-nearest-neighbor hoppings at zero temperature. Using the variational cluster approach with clusters of different shapes and sizes up to 10 sites, it is found that the doping-driven transition from a phase with microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity to a purely superconducting phase is discontinuous for strong interaction and accompanied by phase separation. At half-filling the syst…
Experimental evidence for the existence of a fluctuating charge-density wave order in the pseudogap regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ has renewed interest in its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we consider the problem within a nonlinear sigma model, which was recently proposed to describe the apparent competition between the two order parameters. In particular, we use a saddle-point approximation to calculate the properties of superconducting vortex excitations within such a model. In addition, we analytically calculate a collection of experimentally observable quantities, which probe b…
We have developed a new method to fabricate biepitaxial YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (YBCO) Josephson junctions at the nanoscale, allowing junctions widths down to 100 nm and simultaneously avoiding the typical damage in grain boundary interfaces due to conventional patterning procedures. By using the competition between the superconducting YBCO and the insulating Y2BaCuO5 phases during film growth, we formed nanometer sized grain boundary junctions in the insulating Y2BaCuO5 matrix as confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Electrical transport measurements give clear indications that…
We study a model for the pinning of vortices in a two-dimensional, inhomogeneous, Type-II superconductor in its mixed state. The model is based on a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy functional whose coefficients are determined by the mean-field transition temperature T_{c0} and the zero-temperature penetration depth λ(0). We find that if (i) T_{c0} and λ(0) are functions of position, and (ii) λ^2(0) is proportional to T_{c0}^y, with y greater than 0, then the vortices tend to be pinned where T_{c0}, and hence the magnitude of the superconducting order parameter Δ, are large. This behavior is i…
We report the observation of coherent oscillations associated with charge density wave (CDW) order in the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x by time-resolved optical reflectivity. Oscillations with frequency 1.87 THz onset at approximately 105 K and 130 K for dopings of x = 0.67 (ortho-VIII) and x = 0.75 (ortho-III), respectively. Upon cooling below the superconducting critical temperature (T_c), the oscillation amplitude is enhanced, the phase shifts by π, and the frequency softens by δν/ ν~7%. A bi-quadratically coupled Landau-Ginzburg model qualitatively describes this behavior a…
Typically the superconducting phase weakens at several points with the increase in disorder before it is distroyed in the 2d-thin films. This may lead to an inhomogeneous superconducting state without a continuous phase. Here we present scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements at 0.1 K in the disordered polycrystalline film of TiN describing the nanoscale size features of the superconducting state. The imaging shows imcommensurate charge density modulations, originating at the crystalline bounadries, and intercepted on large scale by the beat patterns in the regions of overlap. Electronic …
It has been long suspected that spin fluctuations in the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 may lead to a triplet superconductivity in this material. Here we point out another possibility, a spatially inhomogeneous singlet superconducting state (a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state). We report detailed electronic structure calculations, as well as calculations of the zone center phonons and their coupling with electrons. We find that the exchange splitting is nonuniform and may allow for gap formation at some parts of the Fermi surface. We also find that there is substantial coupling of Zr r…
The current-voltage characteristics (IVC) of $S-c-N$ point contacts of superconductors with a small coherence length ${ξ_{0}}$ reveal steps with discrete values of the differential resistance. This peculiarity is associated with a transition of the contact region of the superconductor to a spatially inhomogeneous state under the influence of the current injection of nonequilibrium quasiparticles penetrating the superconductor to a depth ${{l}_{E}}$ . The role of the relaxation of the disbalance between the occupancies of electron- and hole-like branches of the quasiparticle spectrum is manifes…
Multiple correlation lengths and type-1.5 superconductivity in $U(1)$ superconductors due to hidden competition between irreducible representations of nonlocal pairing

The advent of high transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) has led to recent muSR investigations of the magnetic-field response of cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature T_c. Here the results of such experiments on hole-doped cuprates are reviewed. Although these investigations are currently ongoing, it is clear that the effects of high field on the internal magnetic field distribution of these materials is dependent upon a competition between superconductivity and magnetism. In La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 the response to the external field above Tc is dominated by heterogeneous…
New dielectric transitions are observed at common temperatures 32K and 245K, in isostructural $La_{2}CuO_{4+x}$ and $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4},$ that are signatures of local lattice (octahedral) instabilities. The present dielectric transitions reveal new aspects of the phase diagram of the perovskite cuprates and nickelates. They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism. These results also indicate that inhomogeneous electronic states, such as charge stripes and oxygen orde…
The pseudogap is one of the most pervasive phenomena of high temperature superconductors. It is attributed either to incoherent Cooper pairing setting in above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, or to a hidden order parameter competing with superconductivity. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering from underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6) to show that the dispersion relations of spin excitations in the superconducting and pseudogap states are qualitatively different. Specifically, the extensively studied "hour glass" shape of the magnetic dispersions in the superconducting state is no lo…
Besides significant electronic correlations, high-temperature superconductors also show a strong coupling of electrons to a number of lattice modes. Combined with the experimental detection of electronic inhomogeneities and ordering phenomena in many high-T_c compounds, these features raise the question as to what extent phonons are involved in the associated instabilities. Here we address this problem based on the Hubbard model including a coupling to phonons in order to capture several salient features of the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates. Charge degrees of freedom, which are suppress…
Various forms of spin and charge ordering have been identified in a wide range of cuprate superconducting materials, but whether these behaviors are ubiquitous phenomena is not established. In this work we focus on one of the simplest compounds, HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), a superconductor with a high transition temperature, 97 K, having only a single layer and tetragonal structure, in contrast to one of the most extensively studied materials, YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+y}$ (Y123). Using nuclear magnetic resonance we have discovered a coherent spatial modulation of both spin and charge that is…
Polycrystalline samples of underdoped (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x<=0.4) were synthesized and studied by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and 57Fe-Moessbauer-spectroscopy. The structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic lattice symmetry shifts towards lower temperatures, becomes less pronounced at x = 0.1-0.2 and is no longer present at x = 0.3. Bulk superconductivity is observed in all samples except (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2 by resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Specific heat data show a broad SDW phase transition in (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2, which i…
We consider heterostructures obtained by stacking layers of two s-wave superconductors with significantly different coupling strengths, respectively in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. The weak- and strong-coupling superconductors are chosen with similar critical temperatures for bulk systems. Using dynamical mean-field theory methods, we find an ubiquitous enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature for all the heterostructures where a single layer of one of the two superconductors is alternated with a thicker multilayer of the other. Two distinct physical regimes can be ide…
Superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW) are competitive, yet coexisting orders in cuprate superconductors. To understand their microscopic interdependence, a probe capable of discerning their interaction on its natural length and time scales is necessary. We use ultrafast resonant soft x-ray scattering to track the transient evolution of CDW correlations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ following the quench of superconductivity by an infrared laser pulse. We observe a non-thermal response of the CDW order characterized by a near doubling of the correlation length within $\approx$ 1 picos…
A mechanism for electronic phase separation in iron pnictides is proposed. It is based on the competition between commensurate and incommensurate spin-density-wave phases in a system with an imperfect doping-dependent nesting of a multi-sheeted Fermi surface. We model the Fermi surface by two elliptical electron pockets and three circular hole pockets. The interaction between a charge carrier in a hole band and a carrier in an electron band leads to the formation of spin-density-wave order. The commensurate spin density wave in the parent compound transforms to the incommensurate phase when do…
When the electron density of highly crystalline thin films is tuned by chemical doping or ionic liq- uid gating, interesting effects appear including unconventional superconductivity, sizeable spin-orbit coupling, competition with charge-density waves, and a debated low-temperature metallic state that seems to avoid the superconducting or insulating fate of standard two-dimensional electron systems. Some experiments also find a marked tendency to a negative electronic compressibility. We suggest that this indicates an inclination for electronic phase separation resulting in a nanoscopic inhomo…
We present electric noise measurements of nanoscale biepitaxial YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (YBCO) Josephson junctions fabricated by two different lithographic methods. The first (conventional) technique defines the junctions directly by ion milling etching through an amorphous carbon mask. The second (soft patterning) method makes use of the phase competition between the superconducting YBCO (Y123) and the insulating Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) phase at the grain boundary interface on MgO (110) substrates. The voltage noise properties of the two methods are compared in this study. For all junctions (having a thickness…
We study the phase diagram of a two component Fermi system with a weak attractive interaction. Our analysis includes the leading order Hartree energy shifts and pairing correlations at finite temperature and chemical potential difference between the two fermion species. We show that in an asymmetric system, the Hartree shift to the single particle energies are important for the phase competition between normal and superfluid phase and can change the phase transition curve qualitatively. At large asymmetry we find that a novel but somewhat fragile superfluid state can be favored due to finite t…
The condensation of an electron superfluid from a conventional metallic state at a critical temperature $T_c$ is described well by the BCS theory. In the underdoped copper-oxides, high-temperature superconductivity condenses instead from a nonconventional metallic "pseudogap" phase that exhibits a variety of non-Fermi liquid properties. Recently, it has become clear that a charge density wave (CDW) phase exists within the pseudogap regime, appearing at a temperature $T_{CDW}$ just above $T_c$. The near coincidence of $T_c$ and $T_{CDW}$, as well the coexistence and competition of CDW and super…
