The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO$_2$ plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation, revealing that the photoinduced CDW is similar to phenomena shown under magnetic fields. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical clue that the characteristics of the photoinduced normal state show a solid resemblance to those under magnetic fields in equilibrium conditions.
The spatially-resolved relaxation characteristics of photoinduced quasiparticles (QPs) in CuO$sub 2$ planes of underdoped YBCO are disclosed by polarized fs time-resolved spectroscopy. The relaxation time (tau) along b axis diverges at Tc, and appears to be governed by a temperature-dependent gap Delta(T) at T < Tc. Furthermore, for T > Tc, a monotonic increase of tau with decreasing T along the b axis and ab diagonal was observed and can be attributed to a temperature-independent gap Delta$sub p$. The results lend support to recombination dominant scenario of QP dynamics. However, the QP ther…
A model is developed for photoinduced absorption from localized states observed in femtosecond pump-probe experiments in high-Tc superconductors and other materials. The dynamics of localized carriers are described in terms of phenomenological approach similar to that originaly proposed by Rothwarf and Taylor. Expanding the relaxation rate in powers of the order parameter we have shown that density of localized carriers is sensitive to Tc. From the analysis of the experimental data on YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and K0.3MoO3 we conclude that significant intra-gap density of localized states exists in these …
Photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics are investigated in a $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$ superconductor as a function of doping $δ$ and temperature $T$ using ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopy. A model calculation is presented which describes the temperature dependence of the photoinduced quasiparticle population $n_{pe}$, photoinduced transmission $Δ{\cal T}/{\cal T}$ and relaxation time $τ$ for three different superconducting gaps: (i) a temperature-dependent collective gap such that ${\bf Δ}(T)\to 0$ as $T\to T_{c}$, (ii) a temperature-independent gap, which might arise for the…
We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconducting pairing. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario - evidence for the presence of a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the s…
Here we report extensive ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity experiments on overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals (T$_C$=78 K) aimed to clarify the nature of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The experimental data show the lack of the quasiparticles decay time divergence at the fluence required to induce this phase transition, in contrast to the thermally-driven phase transition observed at T$_C$ and at variance with recently reported photoinduced charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave to metal phase transitions. Our dat…
We report that in YBa2Cu3Oy and La2-xSrxCuO4 there is a spatially inhomogeneous response to magnetic field for temperatures T extending well above the bulk superconducting transition temperature Tc. An inhomogeneous magnetic response is observed above Tc even in ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.50, which has highly ordered doping. The degree of the field inhomogeneity above Tc tracks the hole doping dependences of both Tc and the density of the superconducting carriers below Tc, and therefore is apparently coupled to superconductivity.
Intrinsic Electronic Structure and Nodeless Superconducting Gap of $\mathrm{YBa_{2} Cu_{3} O_{7-δ} }$ Observed by Spatially-Resolved Laser-Based Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering has been observed in the superconducting high-$Tc$ cuprate ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}}$ (${\rm T_{c}}$=55 K) by polarized and unpolarized elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic peak intensity exhibits a marked enhancement at $T_{c}$. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments demonstrate that the staggered magnetization is not truly static but fluctuates on a nanosecond time scale. These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.
We measure magnetic quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprates YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ with $x=0.61$, 0.69, using fields of up to 85 T. The quantum-oscillation frequencies and effective masses obtained suggest that the Fermi energy in the cuprates has a maximum at $p\approx 0.11-0.12$. On either side, the effective mass may diverge, possibly due to phase transitions associated with the T=0 limit of the metal-insulator crossover (low-$p$ side), and the postulated topological transition from small to large Fermi surface close to optimal doping (high $p$ side).
The magnetic field dependence of the specific heat of Zn-doped single crystals of YBa_{2}Cu_3O_{6.95} was measured between 2 and 10 K and up to 8 Tesla. Doping levels of 0, 0.15%, 0.31%, and 1% were studied and compared. In particular we searched for the Schottky anomaly associated with the Zn-induced magnetic moments.
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
The photoexcited state in superconducting metals and alloys was studied via pump-probe spectroscopy. A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser was used to create the non-equilibrium state and the far-infrared pulses of a synchrotron storage ring, to which the laser is synchronized, measured the changes in the material optical properties. Both the time- and frequency- dependent photoinduced spectra of Pb, Nb, NbN, Nb{0.5}Ti{0.5}N, and Pb{0.75}Bi{0.25} superconducting thin films were measured in the low-fluence regime. The time dependent data establish the regions where the relaxation rate is dominated either …
We examine coherent phonons in a strongly driven sample of optimally-doped high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. We observe a non-linear lattice response of the 4.5\,THz copper-oxygen vibrational mode at high excitation densities, evidenced by the observation of the phonon third harmonic and indicating the mode is strongly anharmonic. In addition, we observe how high-amplitude phonon vibrations modify the position of the electronic charge transfer resonance. Both of these results have important implications for possible phonon-driven non-equilibrium superconductivity.
Neutron Scattering measurements for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ have identified small magnetic moments that increase in strength as the temperature is reduced below $T^\ast$ and further increase below $T_c$. An analysis of the data shows the moments are antiferromagnetic between the Cu-O planes with a correlation length of longer than 195 Åin the $a$-$b$ plane and about 35 Åalong the c-axis. The origin of the moments is unknown, and their properties are discusssed both in terms of Cu spin magnetism and orbital bond currents.
Oxygen NMR is used to probe the local influence of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni impurities in the superconducting state of optimally doped high Tc YBa2Cu3O7. Zn and Ni induce a staggered paramagnetic polarization, similar to that evidenced above Tc, with a typical extension xi=3 cell units for Zn and xi>=3 for Ni. In addition, Zn is observed to induce a local density of states near the Fermi Energy in its neighbourhood, which also decays over about 3 cell units. Its magnitude decreases sharply with increasing temperature. This allows direct comparison with the STM observations done in BiSCO.
We have probed the Landau levels of nodal quasi-particles by tunneling along a nodal direction of (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin films with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes, and parallel to the film's surface. In optimally doped films and at low temperature, finite energy nodal states are clearly observed in films thinner than the London penetration depth. Above a well defined temperature the order parameter reverts to a pure \emph{d}-wave symmetry.
We report Electronic Raman Scattering measurements on optimally doped Zn and Ni substituted YBCO in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ channels. We show that the superconducting gap energy is independant of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn substitutions. On the contrary the collective A$_{1g}$ mode follows the critical temperature $T_c$ with two distinct slopes for Ni and Zn, and tracks the magnetic resonance seen in inelastic neutron scattering. We explain the unconventionnal energy dependence of the superconducting gap and discuss the behaviour of the A$_{1g}$ mode within magnetic and non-magnetic impurit…
We report the fabrication of high Tc superconducting wires by photodoping a GdBa2Cu3O{6.5} thin film. An optical near-field probe was used to locally excite carriers in the system at room temperature. Trapping of the photogenerated electrons define a confining potential for the conducting holes in the CuO planes. Spatially resolved reflectance measurements show the photogenerated nanowires to be ~ 250 nm wide. Electron diffusion, before electron capture, is believed to be responsible for the observed width of the wires.
In a recent Comment [arXiv:0711.4654], Y. Ando raises two valid issues in relation to our low-temperature heat transport study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ across the insulator-to-superconductor boundary: 1) the possible role of twin boundaries in scattering phonons; 2) the best fitting procedure for extracting a fermionic (linear) term from the data. In this Reply, we show that both concerns can be laid to rest by 1) using new data from a tetragonal (twin-free) sample, and 2) using an analysis that does not involve any fitting.
We report the observation of two dielectric transitions at 110K and 60K in the microwave response of non-superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0} crystals. The transitions are characterized by a change in polarizability and presence of loss peaks, associated with overdamped dielectric modes. An explanation is presented in terms of changes in polarizability of the apical O atoms in the Ba-O layer, affected by lattice softening at 110K, due to change in buckling of the Cu-O layer. The onset of another mode at 60K strongly suggests an additional local lattice change at this temperature. Thus microwav…
A comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in the near-optimally doped high-temperature superconductor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ is presented. The spin correlations in the normal state are commensurate with the crystal lattice, and the intensity is peaked around the wave vector characterizing the antiferromagnetic state of the insulating precursor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6}}$. Profound modifications of the spin excitation spectrum appear abruptly below the superconducting transition temperature, $\rm T_C$, where a commensurate resonant mode and a set of weaker…
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
The coupling between the superconducting planes of YBa2Cu3O{7-δ}/ PrBa2Cu3O{7-δ} superlattices has been measured by c-axis transport. We show that only by changing the thickness of the superconducting YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} layers, it is possible to switch between quasi-particle and Josephson tunneling. From our data we deduce a low temperature c-axis coherence length of 0.27 nm.
Understanding the magnetic excitations in high-transition temperature (high-$T_c$) copper oxides is important because they may mediate the electron pairing for superconductivity. By determining the wavevector ({\bf Q}) and energy ($\hbarω$) dependence of the magnetic excitations, one can calculate the change in the exchange energy available to the superconducting condensation energy. For the high-$T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, the most prominent feature in the magnetic excitations is the resonance. Although the resonance has been suggested to contribute a major part of the superc…
A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the in-plane anisotropy of magnetic excitations in twin-free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c =$ 61 K) reveals that the spin excitation spectra in the superconducting and normal states are qualitatively different. Below $T_c$, the spectrum consists of upward- and downward-dispersing branches with modest in-plane anisotropy merging at an energy $E_{res} =$ 37.5 meV. In the normal state, the singularity at $E_{res}$ disappears, and the spectrum exhibits a steep dispersion with a strongly anisotropic in-plane geometry. These data have important implica…
We study the perpendicular transport characteristics of small superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/LaMnO$_{3+δ}$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$) tunnel junctions. At a large bias voltage $V\sim 1$ V we observe a step-like onset of excess current that occurs below the superconducting transition temperature $T<T_c$ and is easily suppressed by a magnetic field. The phenomenon is attributed to a novel type of the superconducting proximity effect of non-equilibrium electrons injected into the conduction band of the ferromagnetic insulator via a Fowler-Nordheim tunne…
X-band electron paramagnetic resonance on doped Er3+ and Yb3+ ions in Y0.99(Yb,Er)0.01Ba2Cu3OX compounds with different oxygen contents in the wide temperature range (4-120)K have been made. In the superconducting species, the strong dependencies of the linewidth and resonance line position from the sweep direction of the applied magnetic field are revealed at the temperatures significantly below TC. The possible origins of the observed hysteresis are analyzed. Applicability of the presented EPR approach to extract information about the dynamics of the flux-line lattice and critical state para…
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the dynamic spin fluctuations in an underdoped high temperature superconductor YBCO_{6.8} single crystal. The magnetic resonance, that occurs around 40 meV in overdoped samples, is shifted to a lower energy, E_r= 34 meV. A constant ratio, $E_r/ k_B T_C= 4.9 \pm 0.2$, almost independent of the doping level, is found. According to numerous theoretical approaches, this finding supports the idea that the resonance energy is proportional (approximately twice) to the superconducting gap.
Microwave absorption measurements in magnetic fields from zero up to 16 T were used to determine the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations above the superconducting critical temperature T_c in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}. Measurements were performed on deeply underdoped, slightly underdoped, and overdoped single crystals. The temperature range of the superconducting fluctuations above T_c is determined by an experimental method which is free from arbitrary assumptions about subtracting the nonsuperconducting contributions to the total measured signal, and/or theoretical models to extract the …
Thermal transport in the T -> 0 limit was measured as a function of doping in high-quality single crystals of the cuprate superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_y. The residual linear term kappa_0/T is found to decrease as one moves from the overdoped regime towards the Mott insulator region of the phase diagram. The doping dependence of the low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from kappa_0/T is seen to scale closely with that of the pseudogap, arguing against a non-superconducting origin for the pseudogap. The presence of a linear term for all dopings is evidence against the existence of a quantum phase…
We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.
We present evidence that the antiferromagnetic spin correlations in optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 develop a surprisingly strong anisotropy in the superconducting state. Comparing the ratio of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates of the planar copper and oxygen, measured at the lowest and highest temperatures as well as at T_c, we conclude that the antiferromagnetic in-plane correlations vanish as the temperature goes to zero. This observation is corroborated by the measurement of the copper linewidth in YBa_2Cu_4O_8. In contrast, the out-of-plane correlations do…
A new NMR anvil cell design is used for measuring the influence of high pressure on the electronic properties of the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. It is found that pressure increases the spin shift at all temperatures in such a way that the pseudo-gap feature has almost disappeared at 63 kbar. This change of the temperature dependent spin susceptibility can be explained by a pressure induced proportional decrease (factor of two) of a temperature dependent component, and an increase (factor of 9) of a temperature…
The previous theoretical study has shown that pulse irradiation to the Mott insulating state in the Hubbard model can induce the enhancement of superconducting correlation due to the generation of $η$ pairs. Here, we show that the same mechanism can be applied to the Kondo lattice model, an effective model for heavy electron systems, by demonstrating that the pulse irradiation indeed enhances the $η$-pairing correlation. As in the case of the Hubbard model, the non-linear optical process is essential to increase the number of photoinduced $η$ pairs and thus the enhancement of the superconducti…
We report the measurements of in-plane resistivity, Hall effect, and Nernst effect in Zn doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The pseudogap temperature, $T^*$, determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity, does not change significantly with Zn doping. Meanwhile the onset temperature ($T^ν$) of anomalous Nernst signal above $T_{c0}$, which is interpreted as evidence for vortex-like excitations, decreases sharply as the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c0}$ does. A significant decrease in the maximum of vortex Ne…
Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated wi…
Polarized and unpolarized neutron triple-axis spectrometry was used to study the dynamical magnetic susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}({\bf q},ω)$ as a function of energy ($\hbarω$) and wave vector (${\bf q}$) in a wide temperature range for the bilayer superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ with oxygen concentrations, $x$, of 0.45, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.93, and 0.95. The most prominent features in the magnetic spectra include a spin gap in the superconducting state, a pseudogap in the normal state, the much-discussed resonance, and incommensurate spin fluctuations below the resonance. We establi…
An experimental study of proximity effect in La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 - YBa2Cu3O7 - La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 trilayers is reported. Transport measurements on these samples show clear oscillations in critical current (I_c) as the thickness of La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 layers (d_F) is scanned from ~ 50 A to ~ 1100 A. In the light of existing theories of ferromagnet-superconductor (FM-SC) heterostructures, this observation suggests a long range proximity effect in the manganite, modulated by it's weak exchange energy (~ 2 meV). The observed modulation of the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic LSMO la…
Over the last decade advances in high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials have generated a renewed optimism in the use of this technology in future high-power applications including motors, generators, and power transmission. The most promising superconducting material, YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO), has demonstrated current density capacity as high as 106 A/cm2 and is typically deposited epitaxially as a thin film on a buffered metallic substrate. The coated conductor architecture Ag/YBCO/Buffer/Ni-based substrate, as does other heteromaterials, introduces unique challenges to the laser micromac…
We report systematic studies of structural, microstructural and transport properties of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d bulk samples with 0.20 x 0.0. The partial substitution of Ca2+ at Y3+ site in YBa2Cu3O7-d leads towards slightly overdoped regime, which along with disorder in CuO2 planes is responsible for decrease in superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of the doped system. The microstructural variants being studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique in imaging and selected area diffraction modes revealed an increase in the density of twins with increase in Ca concentration despi…
We have measured the spin fluctuations in the YBa2Cu3O6.5 (YBCO6.5, Tc=59 K) superconductor at high-energy transfers above ~ 100 meV. Within experimental error, the momentum dependence is isotropic at high-energies, similar to that measured in the insulator for two dimensional spin waves, and the dispersion extrapolates back to the incommensurate wave vector at the elastic position. This result contrasts with previous expectations based on measurements around 50 meV which were suggestive of a softening of the spin-wave velocity with increased hole doping. Unlike the insulator, we observe a sig…
We report on an \textit{ab}-anisotropy of $J_{c \parallel b}/J_{c \parallel a}% \cong 1.8$ and $I_{c}R_{n \parallel b}/I_{c}R_{n \parallel a}\cong 1.2$ in ramp-edge junctions between untwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ and $s$% -wave Nb. For these junctions, the angle $θ$ with the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ crystal b-axis is varied as a single parameter. The $R_{n}$A($θ$)-dependence presents 2-fold symmetry. The minima in $I_{c}R_{n}$ at $θ\cong 50^{\circ}$ suggest a real s-wave subdominant component and negligible $d_{xy}$-wave or imaginary s-wave admixtures. The $I_{c}R_{n}$($θ$)-dependence is …
In-plane transport properties of nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35) are measured using high-quality untwinned single crystals. We find that both the a- and b-axis resistivities show log(1/T) divergence down to 80 mK, and accordingly the thermal conductivity data indicate that the nodal quasiparticles are progressively localized with lowering temperature. Hence, both the charge and heat transport data do not support the existence of a "thermal metal" in nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, as opposed to a recent report by Sutherland {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 14700…
We have examined the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc ~ 75 K) using two local probe techniques: 170Yb Moessbauer down to 0.1 K and muon spin relaxation (muSR) down to 1.5 K. At 0.1 K, the 170Yb measurements show the Cu(2) over essentially all the sample volume carry magnetically correlated moments which are static on the time-scale of 10^{-9} s. The moments show a distribution in size. The correlations are probably short range. As the temperature increases, the correlated moments are observed to fluctuate with measurable rates (in …
Superconductivity in high temperature superconductors is achieved by introducing charge carriers into cuprate insulators containing CuO$_2$ planes. Perturbation in these CuO$_2$ planes suppresses superconductivity by strongly affecting the electronic environment. Here we have use photoinduced electronic modification of Cu ion in CuO$_2$ plane to investigate the effect of local perturbation in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$. This method has been used to suppress superconducting transition temperature T$_c$. We show that our results on photoinduced suppression of superconductivity are consis…
A bulk polycrystalline sample of YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ) (δ\approx 0.1) has been irradiated by γ-rays with ^{60}Co source. Non-monotonic behavior of T_{c} with increasing irradiation dose Φ(up to 220 MR) is observed: T_{c} decreases at low doses (Φ< 50 MR) from initial value (\approx 93 K) by about 2 K and then rises, forming a minimum. At higher doses (Φ> 120 MR) T_{c} goes down again. The temperature width of resistive transition increases rather sharply with dose below 75 MR and drops somewhat at higher dose. The results observed are discussed, taking into account the granular structure of sam…
We have examined the magnetic properties of superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc = 65 K) using elastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation (muSR) on single crystal samples. The elastic neutron scattering measurements evidence magnetic reflections which correspond to a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) magnetic structure with an associated Neel temperature T_N ~ 400 K. This magnetically correlated state is not evidenced by the muSR measurements. We suggest this apparent anomaly arises because the magnetically correlated state is dynamic in nature. It fluctuates wit…
Dynamics of depletion and recovery of superconducting state in La2-xSrxCuO_4 thin films is investigated utilizing optical pump-probe and optical pump - THz probe techniques as a function of temperature and excitation fluence. The absorbed energy density required to suppress superconductivity is found to be about 8 times higher than the thermodynamically determined condensation energy density and nearly temperature independent between 4 and 25 K. These findings indicate that during the time when superconducting state suppression takes place (~0.7 ps), a large part (nearly 90%) of the energy is …
The electronic spin susceptibility of YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95} has been measured with high precision up to 24 Tesla with 17O nuclear magnetic resonance. Its temperature dependence can be accounted for by superconducting fluctuations that result in a smooth crossover from the normal to the vortex liquid state. A magnetic field-temperature phase diagram for this crossover has been established having strong upward curvature.
Measurements of the magnetization under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 10.2 kbar) in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 were carried out. From the scaling analysis of the magnetization data the pressure induced shifts of the transition temperature T_c, the volume V and the anisotropy γhave been obtained. It was shown that the pressure induced relative shift of T_c mirrors essentially that of the anisotropy. This observation uncovers a novel generic property of anisotropic type II superconductors, that inexistent in the isotropic case.
We have developed a masked ion irradiation technique to engineer the energy landscape for vortices in oxide superconductors. This approach associates the possibility to design the landscape geometry at the nanoscale with the unique capability to adjust depth of the energy wells for vortices. This enabled us to unveil the key role of vortex channeling in modulating the amplitude of the field matching effects with the artificial energy landscape, and to make the latter govern flux dynamics over an usually wide range of temperatures and applied fields.
For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $ε_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065 <p<0.16$, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is…
To address the issue of the pseudogap in the superconducting state of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, we studied the temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight in the \textit{c}-axis polarized optical spectra for underdoped YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals with $x=0,0.007,$ 0.012, and 0.04. It was found that for Zn substituted samples, the spectral weight transfer to the high energy region, which characterizes the pseudogap state, continues even below the superconducting transition temperature (\textit{T}$_{c}$), indicating the coexis…
We report on the effect of agglomeration forced by strong electric field in fine particles of nearly ferroelectric YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductor. It turns out that the particles from agglomerates exhibit different morphology than the rest of powder that attaches to high-voltage electrodes. Study by means of electron paramagnetic resonance revealed in the powder attached to electrodes a narrow spectrum superimposed on Cu2+ anisotropic spectrum common for YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductors. We assume that this narrow spectrum originates from nanopolar regions generated by strong electric discharges taking…
A rapid decrease in the critical current density (Jc) of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films with increasing film thickness has been observed for multiple YBCO growth processes. While such behavior is predicted from 2D collective pinning models under certain assumptions, empirical observations of the thickness dependence of Jc are believed to be largely processing dependent at present. To investigate this behavior in ex situ YBCO films, 2.0 and 2.9 um thick YBCO films on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) - yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates were thinned and repeatedly measured for rho(T) and J…
The magnetization around the superconducting transition was measured in YBa2Cu3O7-d with magnetic impurities in the CuO2 layers (Cu substituted by Zn or Ni) or between them (Y substituted by Gd or Pr). While some of these impurities have an important effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the precursor diamagnetism observed above Tc is not appreciably affected. This result contrasts with recent observations in a conventional BCS superconductor (La), in which the precursor diamagnetism was found to increase several orders of magnitude with the addition of a small amount (a f…
Compelling efforts to improve the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) of superconductors have been made through high-pressure application. Understanding the underlying mechanism behind such improvements is critically important, however, much remains unclear. Here we studied ortho-III YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.73}$ (YBCO) using x-ray scattering under hydrostatic-pressure (HP) up to ~6.0 GPa. We found the reinforced oxygen order (OO) of YBCO under HP, revealing an oxygen rearrangement in the Cu-O layer, which evidently shows the charge transfer phenomenon between the CuO$_{2}$ plane and Cu-O layer. Conc…
A precursor of superconductivity has been searched in the in-plane optical spectra of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$, in which the previous $c$-axis optical spectra showed the presence of superconducting carriers at a temperature far above $T_c$ [Uykur $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 127003 (2014)][Dubroka $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 047006 (2011)]. By carefully subtracting the normal component from the imaginary part of conductivity $σ_2$($ω$), we found a clear in-plane response of superconducting condensate at the temperature consistent with the $c$-axis optical data. This confirms that t…
