"Secondary doping" in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is quite effective and a frequently used method for the conductivity enhancement. This simple approach, the addition of co-solvents to the PEDOT:PSS solution before film fabrication, is an essential way to derive the high electrical performance of PEDOT:PSS, but the mechanism still remains unclear. In this study, nanoscale structural changes synchronized with the conductivity enhancement via secondary doping in PEDOT:PSS films were investigated. During secondary doping with ethylene glycol near the critical dopant concentration, non-crystalized PEDOT molecules uncoupled from PSS chains and then underwent nano-crystallization. These structural changes might be the key driving force for conductivity enhancement via secondary doping.
In all printed OFETs with Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/ poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/ PSS) gate, offset printing and gravure of electrically dense sub-$μ$ insulators from polyvinylphenol (PVPh), polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as well as other organic and inorganic materials turned out to be problematic due to the most reactive part of the gate material- the negative sulfonate ions from PSS. The present paper investigates the nature of the interaction between PSS and PVOH sub-$μ$ insulator explored by infrared spectroscopy and electrical methods. Some evidenc…
Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS), an optically transparent organic semi-conductor, constitutes a suspension of conducting PEDOT:PSS grains, shelled by an insulating layer of PSS. While a percolation network enhances dc conductivity, structural and electrical inhomogenity hinters electric charge flow giving rise to capacitance effects. In the present work, two distinct relaxation mechanisms are detected by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS). Double polarization mechamisms are predicted by bi-phase suspension dielectric theory. Within the frame of in…
A wide variation in the charge transport properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) films is attributed to the degree of phase-segregation of the excess insulating polyanion. The results indicate that the charge transport in PEDOT-PSS can vary from hopping to critical regime of the metal-insulator transition, depending on the subtle details of morphology. The extent of electrical-connectivity in films, directly obtained from a temperature dependent high-frequency transport study, indicates various limiting factors to the transport, which are correlated wi…
The correlation between the transport properties and structural degrees of freedom of conducting polymers is a central concern in both practical applications and scientific research. In this study, we demonstrated the existence of mesoscopic two-dimensional (2D) coherent charge transport in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film by performing structural investigations and high-field magnetoconductance (MC) measurements in magnetic fields of up to 15 T. We succeeded in observing marked positive MCs reflecting 2D electronic states in a conventional drop-cast fil…
The present paper discusses the influence of Tin Sulphide's grain size on the performance of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/SnS/Al structured solar cells fabricated by thermal evaporation. The grain sizes were maintained in the range of 11-18~nm by controlling the thickness of SnS films. While the open circuit voltage (Voc) was found to be a constant for this structure, Parameters such as short circuit current density (Jsc), series resistance (Rs), parallel resistance (Rp), ideality factor and the overall efficiency were found to be dependent on the SnS grain size and incident light intensity. The experimental…
We have performed resistivity measurements of poly[3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene]: poly[styrenesulfonate] (PEDOT:PSS) films with varying concentrations of glycerol. Resistivity is seen to decrease exponentially from roughly 3 ohm-cm for pure PEDOT:PSS to 3x10-2 ohm-cm for 35 mg/cm3 glycerol in PEDOT:PSS. Beyond this concentration adding glycerol does not significantly change resistivity. Bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells using these variously doped PEDOT:PSS layers as electrodes were studied to characterize the effects on efficiency and lifetime. Although our data display significant scatte…
We report static and time-resolved terahertz (THz) conductivity measurements of a high- performance thermoelectric material containing tellurium nanowires in a PEDOT:PSS matrix. Composites were made with and without sulfur passivation of the nanowires surfaces. The material with sulfur linkers (TeNW/PD-S) is less conductive but has a longer carrier lifetime than the formulation without (TeNW/PD). We find real conductivities at f = 1THz of σ(TeNW/PD) = 160 S/cm and σ(TeNW/PD-S) = 5.1 S/cm. These values are much larger than the corresponding DC conductivities, suggesting DC conductivity is limit…
Using electrically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we demonstrate that doping the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with ethylene glycol allows for the control of effective local charge carrier hyperfine fields through motional narrowing. These results suggest that doping of organic semiconductors could enable the tuning of macroscopic material properties dependent on hyperfine fields such as magnetoresistance, the magneto-optical responses and spin-diffusion.
In this work we present an alternative to the use of PEDOT:PSS as hole transport and electron blocking layer in organic photodetectors processed by solution. As PEDOT:PSS is known to be sensitive to humidity, oxygen and UV, removing this layer is essential for lifetime improvements. As a first step to achieving this goal, we need to find an alternative layer that fulfills the same role in order to obtain a working diode with similar or better performance. As a replacement, a layer of Poly((4,8-bis-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-benzo(1,2-b:4,5-b)dithiophene)-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexanoyl)-thieno(3,4-b]t…
Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used to build optoelectronic devices. However, as a hygroscopic water-based acidic material, it brings major concerns for stability and degradation, resulting in an intense effort to replace it in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. In this work, we focus on the perfluorinated ionomer (PFI) polymeric additive to PEDOT:PSS. We demonstrate that it can reduce the relative amplitude of OPV device burn-in, and find two distinct regimes of influence. At low concentrations there is a subtle effect on wetting and work functi…
Stabilizing Solution-Substrate Interaction of Perovskite Ink on PEDOT:PSS for Scalable Blade Coated Narrow Bandgap Perovskite Solar Modules by Gas Quenching
Fabrication techniques such as laser patterning offer excellent potential for low cost and large area device fabrication. Conductive polymers can be used to replace expensive metallic inks such as silver and gold nanoparticles for printing technology. Electrical conductivity of the polymers can be improved by blending with carbon nanotubes. In this work, formulations of acid functionalised multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNT) and poly (ethylenedioxythiophene) [PEDOT]: polystyrene sulphonate [PSS] were processed, and thin films were prepared on plastic substrates. Conductivity of PEDOT: PSS inc…
We investigated the reversible resistive switching of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) thin films sandwiched between Al electrodes. The J-V sweep curve showed a hysteretic behavior which depends on the polarity of the applied voltage bias. From the analysis of I-V curves, it was revealed that the charge transport through the junction was governed by the bulk space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC) model. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, it was confirmed that the initial high resistance state of PEDOT:PSS films is related with the segregatio…
Omnidirectional 3D printing of PEDOT:PSS aerogels with tunable electromechanical performance for unconventional stretchable interconnects and thermoelectrics
The performance of solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is often limited by non-uniform contacts. In this work, we introduce Ni-containing solution-processed metal oxide (MO) interfacial layers inserted between indium tin oxide (ITO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to improve the bottom electrode contact for OLEDs using the poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivative Super-Yellow (SY) as an emission layer. For ITO/Ni-containing MO/PEDOT:PSS bottom electrode structures we show enhanced wetting properties that result in an improved OLE…

Solar cells with the structure ITO-PEDOT:PSS-Ag:SnS-Al were fabricated with the active layer of tin sulphide with silver nano-particles (Ag:SnS) grown by thermal co-evaporation. To understand the influence of the silver nanoparticles on the energy conversion process, various cells with varying active layer thicknesses were compared. Results showed that the Ag nanoparticles act as scattering centers, resulting in longer optical path lengths for incident light. This in turn results in more charge carriers being generated and thus enhances the efficiency of the structure as compared to the pristi…
The interaction of double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene/polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT/PSS) was studied by in-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. The mixing of DWCNTs with PEDOT/PSS caused a partial doping of the outer tube of DWCNTs, which was indicated by the relative change of the Raman intensity of the DWCNTs features. On the other hand, the bands corresponding to inner tubes of DWCNTs and to the polymer were almost untouched by assembling both species into a composite. The in situ Raman spectroelectrochemical experiments have shown t…
After the efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells achieved more than 10%, the control of stability and degradation mechanisms of solar cells became a prominent task. The improvement of device efficiency due to incorporation of a hole-transport layer (HTL) in bulk-heterojunction solar cells has been extensively reported. However, the most widely used HTL material, PEDOT:PSS is frequently suspected to be the dominating source for devices instability under environmental conditions. Thereby effects like photooxidation and electrode corrosion are often reported to shorten device lifetime. Ho…
Irreproducibility is a serious issue in thin film organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, as smallest local inhomogeneities can change the entire behaviour of identically built devices without showing obvious failure. Inhomogeneities can occur at various steps of device preparation and appear in all layers with different length scales and impact. The hole-transport interlayer (HTL) in OPV devices blocks unwanted electron diffusion to the anode and corrects energetic mismatch between oxide electrode and organic semiconductor. Most commonly used is commercial ink based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiop…
We measured the electronic properties and gas sensing responses of template-grown poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS)-based nanowires. The nanowires have a "striped" structure (gold-PEDOT/PSS-gold), typically 8um long (1um-6um-1um for each section, respectively) and 220 nm in diameter. Single-nanowire devices were contacted by pre-fabricated gold electrodes using dielectrophoretic assembly. A polymer conductivity of 11.5 +/- 0.7 S/cm and a contact resistance of 27.6 +/- 4 kOhm were inferred from measurements of nanowires of varying length and diameter. The nanow…
Doped films of organic small molecules are investigated with respect to their thermoelectric properties. A variety of hosts and dopants, for both n and p-doping, are compared. C$_{60}$ n-doped by Cr$_2$(hpp)$_4$ or o-MeO-DMBI-I are found to be the most promising material systems with a maximum of ZT$_\text{M}$ = 0.069 at T$_\text{M}$ = 40°C, assuming a doping-independent thermal conductivity due to phonon-based heat transport. This value is 16% of the current record reported for optimized devices employing the doped polymer PEDOT:PSS.
Although it has been recently demonstrated that the laser-assisted (LA) crystallization process leads to the formation of perovskite absorber films of superior photovoltaic performance compared to conventional thermal annealing (TA), the physical origin behind this important discovery is missing. In this study, CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ perovskite thin films have been synthesized by means of LA and TA crystallization on the surface of two hole transport layers (HTL) namely poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(triarylamine) (PTAA). A systematic study of the eff…
One of the major limitation of standard top-down technologies used in today's neuromorphic engineering is their inability to map the 3D nature of biological brains. Here, we show how bipolar electropolymerization can be used to engineer 3D networks of PEDOT:PSS dendritic fibers. By controlling the growth conditions of the electropolymerized material, we investigate how dendritic fibers can reproduce structural plasticity by creating structures of controllable shape. We demonstrate gradual topologies evolution in a multi-electrode configuration. We conduct a detail electrical characterization o…
Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method …
