We report on the realization of a Fermi-Fermi mixture of ultracold atoms that combines mass imbalance, tunability, and collisional stability. In an optically trapped sample of $^{161}$Dy and $^{40}$K, we identify a broad Feshbach resonance centered at a magnetic field of $217\,$G. Hydrodynamic expansion profiles in the resonant interaction regime reveal a bimodal behavior resulting from mass imbalance. Lifetime studies on resonance show a suppression of inelastic few-body processes by orders of magnitude, which we interpret as a consequence of the fermionic nature of our system. The resonant mixture opens up intriguing perspectives for studies on novel states of strongly correlated fermions with mass imbalance.
We investigate a two-component mixture of resonantly interacting Fermi gases as a function of the ratio κof the heavy to the light mass of the two species. The diffusion Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the ground-state energy and the pair correlation function starting from two different guiding wave functions, which describe respectively the superfluid and the normal state of the gas. Results show that the mixture is stable and superfluid for mass ratios smaller than the critical value κ_c = 13 +/- 1. For larger values of κsimulations utilizing the wave function of the normal state are…
We consider a strongly interacting ${}^{6}$Li-${}^{40}$K mixture, which is imbalanced both in the masses and the densities of the two fermionic species. At present, it is the experimentalist's favorite for reaching the superfluid regime. We construct an effective thermodynamic potential that leads to excellent agreement with Monte Carlo results for the normal state. We use it to determine the universal phase diagram of the mixture in the unitarity limit, where we find, in contrast to the mass-balanced case, the presence of a Lifshitz point. This point is characterized by the effective mass of …
We investigate color superfluidity and trimer formation in resonantly interacting SU(3) Fermi gases with a finite interaction range. The finite range is crucial to avoid the Thomas collapse and treat the Efimov effect occurring in this system. Using the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) equation with medium effects, we show the effects of the atomic Fermi distribution on the Efimov trimer energy at finite temperature. We show the critical temperature of color superfluidity within the non-selfconsistent $T$-matrix approximation (TMA). In this way, we can provide a first insight into the phase di…
Motivated by the recent experimental progresses in the study of p-wave resonant Fermi gas, we investigate the normal state properties of such a gas close to a p-wave scattering resonance. We calculate the universal equation of state and the two p-wave contacts which characterise the universal properties of the system, in good agreement with experiments. Our calculation takes explicit account of the effective range correction and obtains the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ within Nozières-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) scheme, and shows that it lies within experimental reach. We derive analytic exp…
We extract the leading effective range corrections to the equation of state of the unitary Fermi gas from ab initio fixed-node quantum Monte Carlo (FNQMC) calculations in a periodic box using a density functional theory (DFT), and show them to be universal by considering several two-body interactions. Furthermore, we find that the DFT is consistent with the best available unbiased QMC calculations, analytic results, and experimental measurements of the equation of state. We also discuss the asymptotic effective-range corrections for trapped systems and present the first QMC results with the co…
A density functional theory is proposed for strongly interacting fermions with arbitrary large negative scattering length. The functional has only two parameters that are directly fixed to reproduce the universal properties of unitary gas: the so-called "Bertsch parameter" $ξ_0$ and a parameter $η_e$ related to the possible influence of the effective range $r_e$ at infinite scattering length $a$. Using most recent quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) estimates of these two parameters, it is shown that the functional properly reproduces the experimental measurements of interacting Fermi systems not only a…
We study a system of spinless fermions in two dimensions with a short-range interaction fine-tuned to a p-wave resonance. We show that three such fermions form an infinite tower of bound states of orbital angular momentum l=\pm1 and their binding energies obey a universal doubly exponential scaling E_3^{(n)}\propto\exp(-2e^{3πn/4+θ}) at large n. This "super Efimov effect" is found by a renormalization group analysis and confirmed by solving the bound state problem. We also provide an indication that there are l=\pm2 four-body resonances associated with every three-body bound state at E_4^{(n)}…
Using the Gaussian pair fluctuation theory, we investigate quantum fluctuations of a strongly interacting two-dimensional chiral \textit{p}-wave Fermi superfluid at the transition from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a topologically non-trivial Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid. Near the topological phase transition at zero chemical potential, $μ=0$, we observe that quantum fluctuations strongly renormalize the zero-temperature equations of state, sound velocity, pair-breaking velocity, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical temperature of the Fermi superfluid, all of …
We report on experimental investigations of longitudinal collective oscillations in a highly elongated, harmonically trapped two-component Fermi gas with resonantly tuned s-wave interactions ('unitary Fermi gas'). We focus on higher-nodal axial modes, which in contrast to the elementary modes have received little attention so far. We show how these modes can be efficiently excited using a resonant local excitation scheme and sensitively analyzed by a Fourier transformation of the detected time evolution of the axial density profile. We study the temperature dependence of the mode frequencies a…
Inspired by the renewed experimental activities on $p$-wave resonantly interacting atomic Fermi gases, we theoretically investigate some experimental observables of such systems at zero temperature in two dimensions, using both mean-field theory and Gaussian pair fluctuation theory. These observables include the two $p$-wave contact parameters and the breathing mode frequency, which can be readily measured in current cold-atom setups with $^{40}$K and $^{6}$Li atoms. We find that the many-body component of the two contact parameters exhibits a pronounced peak slightly above the resonance and c…
We use two fundamental theoretical frameworks to study the finite-size (shell) properties of the unitary gas in a periodic box: 1) an ab initio Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculation for boxes containing 4 to 130 particles provides a precise and complete characterization of the finite-size behavior, and 2) a new Density Functional Theory (DFT) fully encapsulates these effects. The DFT predicts vanishing shell structure for systems comprising more than 50 particles, and allows us to extrapolate the QMC results to the thermodynamic limit, providing the tightest bound to date on the ground-state e…
We investigate the role of the effective range on the bulk viscosity of $s$- and $p$-wave Fermi gases. At resonance, the presence of the effective range breaks the scale invariance of the system, and hence results in a non-zero bulk viscosity. However, we show that the effective range plays a very different role in the two cases. In the $s$-wave case, the role of the effective range is perturbative, and its contribution to the bulk viscosity vanishes in the limit of zero effective range. On the other hand, the effective range in $p$-wave Fermi gases leads to a non-zero bulk viscosity, even in …
We present investigations of the formation rate and collisional stability of lithium Feshbach molecules in an ultracold three-component mixture composed of two resonantly interacting fermionic 6-Li spin states and bosonic 174-Yb. We observe long molecule lifetimes (> 100 ms) even in the presence of a large ytterbium bath and extract reaction rate coefficients of the system. We find good collisional stability of the mixture in the unitary regime, opening new possibilities for studies and probes of strongly interacting quantum gases in contact with a bath species.
We convert a strongly interacting ultracold Bose gas into a mixture of atoms and molecules by sweeping the interactions from resonant to weak. By analyzing the decay dynamics of the molecular gas, we show that in addition to Feshbach dimers it contains Efimov trimers. Typically around 8\% of the total atomic population is bound into trimers, identified by their density-independent lifetime of about 100~$μ$s. The lifetime of the Feshbach dimers shows a density dependence due to inelastic atom-dimer collisions, in agreement with theoretical calculations. We also vary the density of the gas acros…
Superfluidity is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon, which shows up below a critical temperature and leads to a peculiar behavior of matter, with frictionless flow, the formation of quantized vortices, and the quenching of the moment of inertia being intriguing examples. A remarkable explanation for many phenomena exhibited by a superfluid at finite temperature can be given in terms of a two-fluid mixture comprised of a normal component that behaves like a usual fluid and a superfluid component with zero viscosity and zero entropy. Important examples of superfluid systems are liquid helium and n…
We develop an accurate theory of resonantly interacting Fermi mixtures with both spin and mass imbalance. We consider Fermi mixtures with arbitrary mass imbalances, but focus in particular on the experimentally available ${}^{6}$Li-${}^{40}$K mixture. We determine the phase diagram of the mixture for different interactions strengths that lie on the BCS side of the Feshbach resonance. We also determine the universal phase diagram at unitarity. We find for the mixtures with a sufficiently large mass imbalance, that includes the ${}^{6}$Li-${}^{40}$K mixture, a Lifshitz point in the universal pha…
The mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture is studied, where $N\le5$ identical fermions interact resonantly with an impurity, a distinguishable atom. The shell structure is explored, and the physics of a dynamic light-impurity is shown to be different from that of the static heavy-impurity case. The energies in a harmonic trap at unitarity are calculated and extrapolated to the zero-range limit. In doing so, the scaling factor of the ground state, as well as of a few excited states, is calculated. In the $2 \le N \le 4$ systems, pure $(N+1)$ Efimov states exist for large enough mass ratio. However,…
In this Letter we have studied dressed bound states in Fermi-Bose mixtures near broad interspecies resonance, and implications on many-body correlations. We present the evidence for a first order phase transition between a mixture of Fermi gas and condensate, and a fully paired mixture where extended fermionic molecules occupy a single pairing channel instead of forming a molecular Fermi surface. We have further investigated the effect of Fermi surface dynamics, pair fluctuations and discussed the validity of our results.
A new experiment (P. B. Patel et al., Science 370 (2020) 6521, 1222) involving resonantly interacting atoms confined by laser beams sheds light on momentum and energy diffusion in quantum fluids.
We examine two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons. We calculate the self-enregies of the fermions in the normal state and the Cooper pair channel by including first order vertex correction to derive a modified Eliashberg equation. We predict appearance of superfluids with various non-standard pairing symmetries at experimentally feasible transition temperatures within the strong-coupling limit of the Eliashberg equation. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and follow non-Abelian statistics.
We show that four heavy fermions interacting resonantly with a lighter atom (4+1 system) become Efimovian at mass ratio 13.279(2), which is smaller than the corresponding 2+1 and 3+1 thresholds. We thus predict the five-body Efimov effect for this system in the regime where any of its subsystem is non- Efimovian. For smaller mass ratios we show the existence and calculate the energy of a universal 4+1 pentamer state, which continues the series of the 2+1 trimer predicted by Kartavtsev and Malykh and 3+1 tetramer discovered by Blume. We also show that the effective-range correction for the ligh…
The induced interaction among the majority spin species, due to the presence of the minority species, is computed for the case of a population-imbalanced resonantly-interacting Fermi gas. It is shown that this interaction leads to an instability, at low temperatures, of the recently observed polaron Fermi liquid phase of strongly imbalanced Fermi gases to a p-wave superfluid state. We find that the associated transition temperature, while quite small in the weakly interacting BCS regime, is experimentally accessible in the strongly interacting unitary regime.
We study the three-fermion problem within a 1D model of a Feshbach resonance in order to gain insight into how the FFLO-like state at small negative scattering lengths evolves into a Bose-Fermi mixture at small positive scattering lengths. The FFLO state possesses an oscillating superfluid correlation function, while in a Bose-Fermi mixture correlations are monotonic. We find that this behavior is is already present at the 3-body level. We present an exact study of the 3-body problem, and gain extra insights by considering worldlines of a path integral Monte-Carlo calculation.
We investigate the collisional stability of a sample of 40K atoms immersed in a tunable spin mixture of 6Li atoms. In this three-component Fermi-Fermi mixture, we find very low loss rates in a wide range of interactions as long as molecule formation of 6Li is avoided. The stable fermionic mixture with two resonantly interacting spin states of one species together with another species is a promising system for a broad variety of phenomena in few- and many-body quantum physics.
In few-body physics, Efimov states are an infinite series of three-body bound states that obey universal discrete scaling symmetry when pairwise interactions are resonantly enhanced. Despite abundant reports of Efimov states in recent cold atom experiments, direct observation of the discrete scaling symmetry remains an elusive goal. Here we report the observation of three consecutive Efimov resonances in a heteronuclear Li-Cs mixture near a broad interspecies Feshbach resonance. The positions of the resonances closely follow a geometric series $1$, $λ$, $λ^2$. The observed scaling constant $λ_…
We present an inhomogeneous theory for the low-temperature properties of a resonantly interacting Fermi mixture in a trap that goes beyond the local-density approximation. We compare the Bogoliubov-de Gennes and a Landau-Ginzburg approach and conclude that the latter is more appropriate when dealing with a first-order phase transition. Our approach incorporates the state-of-the-art knowledge on the homogeneous mixture with a population imbalance exactly and gives good agreement with the experimental density profiles of Shin {\it et al}. [Nature {\bf 451}, 689 (2008)]. We calculate the universa…
We determine the three-body bound states of an atom in a Fermi mixture. Compared to the Efimov spectrum of three atoms in vacuum, we show that the Fermi seas deform the Efimov spectrum systematically. We demonstrate that this effect is more pronounced near unitarity, for which we give an analytical estimate. We show that in the presence of Fermi seas, the three-body bound states obey a generalized discrete scaling law. For an experimental confirmation of our prediction, we propose three signatures of three-body bound states of an ultracold Fermi mixture of Yb isotopes, and provide an estimate …
We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimental…
We calculate the entropy in a trapped, resonantly interacting Fermi gas as a function of temperature for a wide range of magnetic fields between the BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation endpoints. This provides a basis for the important technique of adiabatic sweep thermometry, and serves to characterize quantitatively the evolution and nature of the excitations of the gas. The results are then used to calibrate the temperature in several ground breaking experiments on $^6$Li and $^{40}$K.
In this paper we study the low temperature behaviors of a system of Bose-Fermi mixtures at two dimensions. Within a self-consistent ladder diagram approximation, we show that at nonzero temperatures $T\rightarrow0$ the fermions exhibit non-fermi liquid behavior. We propose that this is a general feature of Bose-Fermi mixtures at two dimensions. An experimental signature of this new state is proposed.
We discuss how approximate theories for Bose-Fermi mixtures recover in the molecular limit the expected expression for Fermi-Fermi mixtures of molecules and unpaired fermions. In particular, we compare the energy of the system resulting from a T-matrix diagrammatic approach with that obtained with Variational and Fixed-Node Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo methods.
We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.
We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a mixture of ultra-cold neutral bosons and fermions held on a hexagonal optical lattice. In the strong atom-atom interaction limit, composite fermions composed of one fermion with bosons or bosonic holes in the mixture are formed. Such composite fermions have already been generated successfully in experiment [Nat. Phys. {\bf 7}, 642 (2011)]. Here we predict that this kind of composite fermions may provide a realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect by tuning the atom-atom interaction or the filling of the bosons in the mixture. We also…
The chiral p-wave (p_x \pm ip_y) superfluid has attracted significant attention in recent years, mainly because its vortex core supports a Majorana fermion which, due to its non-Abelian statistics, can be explored for implementing topological quantum computation. Mixing dipolar bosons with fermions in quasi-two-dimensional (2D) space offers the opportunity to use the roton minimum as a tool for engineering the phonon-induced attractive interaction between fermions. We study, within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, the p-wave superfluid pairings in a quasi-2D dipolar Bose-Fermi mixture. We…
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
We study the localization of a cigar-shaped super-fluid Bose-Fermi mixture in a quasi-periodic bichromatic optical lattice (OL) for inter-species attraction and intra-species repulsion. The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the bosons, coupled to a hydrodynamic mean-field equation for fermions at unitarity. We confirm the existence of the symbiotic localized states in the Bose-Fermi mixture and Anderson localization of the Bose component in the interacting Bose-Fermi mixture on a bichromatic OL. The phase diagram in boson and fermion numbers showing the regions of the s…
We report on the realization of a mixture of fermionic $^{161}$Dy and fermionic $^{40}$K where both species are deep in the quantum-degenerate regime. Both components are spin-polarized in their absolute ground states, and the low temperatures are achieved by means of evaporative cooling of the dipolar dysprosium atoms together with sympathetic cooling of the potassium atoms. We describe the trapping and cooling methods, in particular the final evaporation stage, which leads to Fermi degeneracy of both species. Analyzing cross-species thermalization we obtain an estimate of the magnitude of th…
We study mass-imbalanced two-component Fermi mixtures, where one of the components consists of dipolar fermions. We specifically study the mass imbalances corresponding to the atomic ${}^{163}$Dy-${}^{40}$K and ${}^{53}$Cr-${}^{6}$Li mixtures. We study the onset of the $s$-wave superfluid phase, as a function of population imbalance and the dipolar interaction strength. We find the critical temperature and the Fermi surface deformations at the transition to depend on the dipolar interaction strength, where the critical temperature increases (decreases) with dipolar interaction strength for a m…
Fermionic polar molecules in deep 1D optical lattices may form self-assembled filaments when the electric dipoles are oriented along the lattice axis. These composites are bosons or fermions depending on the number of molecules per chain, leading to a peculiar and complex Bose-Fermi mixture, which we discuss in detail for the simplest case of a three-well potential. We show that the interplay between filament binding energy, transverse filament modes, and trimer Fermi energy leads to a rich variety of possible scenarios ranging from a degenerate Fermi gas of trimers to a binary mixture of two …
We describe the relation between the isothermal atomic compressibility and density fluctuations in mixtures of two-component fermions with population or mass imbalance. We derive a generalized version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which is valid for both balanced and imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures. Furthermore, we show that the compressibility, its critical exponents, and phase boundaries can be extracted via an analysis of the density fluctuations as a function of population imbalance, interaction parameter or temperature. Lastly, we demonstrate that in the presence of trapping pote…
We study the Landau damping in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperature. We find that at low temperature, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed at both the BCS side and the BEC side of Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side. The relations between our result and collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture are also discussed.
We study a resonant Bose-Fermi mixture at zero temperature by using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. We explore the system from weak to strong boson-fermion interaction, for different concentrations of the bosons relative to the fermion component. We focus on the case where the boson density $n_B$ is smaller than the fermion density $n_F$, for which a first-order quantum phase transition is found from a state with condensed bosons immersed in a Fermi sea, to a Fermi-Fermi mixture of composite fermions and unpaired fermions. We obtain the equation of state and the phase diagram, and…
We present analytical studies of a boson-fermion mixture at zero temperature with spin-polarized fermions. Using the Thomas-Fermi approximation for bosons and the local-density approximation for fermions, we find a large variety of different density shapes. In the case of continuous density, we obtain analytic conditions for each configuration for attractive as well as repulsive boson-fermion interaction. Furthermore, we analytically show that all the scenarios we describe are minima of the grand-canonical energy functional. Finally, we provide a full classification of all possible ground stat…
We consider a Bose-Fermi mixture in the molecular limit of the attractive interaction between fermions and bosons. For a boson density smaller or equal to the fermion density, we show analytically how a T-matrix approach for the constituent bosons and fermions recovers the expected physical limit of a Fermi-Fermi mixture of molecules and atoms. In this limit, we derive simple expressions for the self-energies, the momentum distribution function, and the chemical potentials. By extending these equations to a trapped system, we determine how to tailor the experimental parameters of a Bose-Fermi …
We investigate collective excitations of density fluctuations and a dynamic density structure factor in a mixture of Bose and Fermi gases in a normal phase. With decreasing temperature, we find that the frequency of the collective excitation deviates from that of the hydrodynamic sound mode. Even at temperature much lower than the Fermi temperature, the collective mode frequency does not reach the collisionless limit analogous to zero sound in a Fermi gas, because of collisions between bosons and fermions.
We consider a mixture of two neutral cold Fermi gases with repulsive interactions. We show that in some region of the parameter space of the system the effective attraction between fermions of the same type can appear due to the exchange of collective excitations. This leads to the formation of BCS pairing in the case where bare inter-atomic interactions are repulsive.
We generalize the application of small polaron theory to ultracold gases of Ref. [\onlinecite{jaksch_njp1}] to the case of Bose-Fermi mixtures, where both components are loaded into an optical lattice. In a suitable range of parameters, the mixture can be described within a Bogoliubov approach in the presence of fermionic (dynamic) impurities and an effective description in terms of polarons applies. In the dilute limit of the slow impurity regime, the hopping of fermionic particles is exponentially renormalized due to polaron formation, regardless of the sign of the Bose-Fermi interaction. Th…
We examine the effect of boson-fermion interaction in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture by using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the boson superfluidity is enhanced by fermions for a weak boson-fermion coupling at an approximate integer boson filling factor (e.g., $0.935\le ρ_b \le 1.0$), and this enhancement is produced both in a fermion metallic state and in a fermion insulating state. A metal-insulator phase transition of fermions induced by boson-fermion interaction is observed even though there is no fermion-fermion interaction in the parent Hamiltonian. F…
Ultracold mixtures of different atomic species have great promise for realizing novel many-body phenomena. In a binary mixture of femions with a large mass difference and repulsive interspecies interactions, a disordered Mott insulator phase can occur. This phase displays an incompressible total density, although the relative density remain compressible. We use strong-coupling and Monte Carlo calculations to show that this phase exists for a broad parameter region for ultracold gases confined in a harmonic trap on a three-dimensional optical lattice, for experimentally accessible values of the…
We consider a mixture of two-component Fermi and (one-component) bose gases under the repulsive Bose-Fermi and attractive Fermi-Fermi interaction. We perform a systematic study of the finite-temperature phase diagrams in the chemical potential space, identifying, using the Landau-Ginzburg theory, the features generic to the phase diagrams within the validity of our model. We apply the theory to explore the physics of correlated BCS pairing among fermions in a tightly confined trap surrounded by a large BEC gas.
We investigate dipole modes in a trapped Bose--Fermi mixture gas in the normal phase, composed of single-species bosons and single-species fermions with $s$-wave scattering. In the extremely low temperature regime, Bose--Einstein statistics and Fermi--Dirac statistics may give rise to an interesting temperature dependence of collective modes. Applying the moment method to the linearized Boltzmann equation, we study the transition of the dipole modes between the hydrodynamic regime and the collisionless regime.
We perform a detailed experimental study of the band excitations and tunneling properties of ultracold fermions in optical lattices. Employing a novel multi-band spectroscopy for fermionic atoms we can measure the full band structure and tunneling energy with high accuracy. In an attractive Bose-Fermi mixture we observe a significant reduction of the fermionic tunneling energy, which depends on the relative atom numbers. We attribute this to an interaction-induced increase of the lattice depth due to self-trapping of the atoms.
Collective oscillations of superfluid mixtures of ultra cold fermionic and bosonic atoms are investigated while varying the fermion-boson scattering length. We study the dynamics with respect to excited center of mass modes and breathing modes in the mixture. Parametric resonances are also analyzed when the scattering length varies periodically in time, by comparing partial differential equation (PDE) models and ordinary differential equation (ODE) models for the dynamics. An application to the recent experiment with fermionic $^{6}$Li and bosonic $^{7}$Li atoms, which approximately have the s…
We report on the expansion of a Fermi-Fermi mixture of Li-6 and K-40 atoms under conditions of strong interactions realized near the center of an interspecies Feshbach resonance. We observe two different phenomena of hydrodynamic behavior. The first one is the well-known inversion of the aspect ratio. The second one is a collective expansion, where both species stick together and despite of their different masses expand jointly. Our work constitutes a first step to explore the intriguing many-body physics of this novel system.
We report the first all-optical production of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture with two spin states of $^6$Li (fermion) and one spin state of $^7$Li (boson) under the resonant magnetic field of the s-wave Feshbach resonance of the fermions. Fermions are cooled efficiently by evaporative cooling and they serve as coolant for bosons. As a result, a superfluid mixture can be achieved by using a simple experimental apparatus and procedures, as in the case of the all-optical production of a single Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that the all-optical method enables us to realize variety of ul…
