We study the efficiency at maximum power of non-adiabatic dissipative (internally dissipative friction in finite time adiabatic processes) Carnot-like heat engines operate in finite time under the power law dissipation regime. We find that the non-adiabatic dissipation does not influence the universal minimum and maximum bounds on the efficiency at maximum power obtained in the generalized dissipative Carnot-like heat engines which does not take in to account the non-adiabatic dissipation.
The Carnot-like heat engines are classified into three types (normal-, sub- and super-dissipative) according to relations between the minimum irreversible entropy production in the "isothermal" processes and the time for completing those processes. The efficiencies at maximum power of normal-, sub- and super-dissipative Carnot-like heat engines are proved to be bounded between $η_C/2$ and $η_C/(2-η_C)$, $η_C /2$ and $η_C$, 0 and $η_C/(2-η_C)$, respectively. These bounds are also shared by linear, sub- and super-linear irreversible Carnot-like engines [Tu and Wang, Europhys. Lett. 98, 40001 (20…
The present work investigates the generalized extreme bounds of the coefficient of performance (COP) for the power law dissipative Carnot-like refrigerator in the presence of non-adiabatic dissipation under $χ$ and $\dotΩ$ optimization criteria. The lower and upper bounds of the COP for the low dissipation Carnot-like refrigerator under $χ$ and $\dotΩ$ optimization criteria are obtained with power law dissipation level $δ=1$. The comparative analysis of the extreme bounds of COP at optimized $\dot{Ω}$ and $χ$ figure of merit shows the lower bound of the $\dotΩ$ optimized COP is always higher t…
In the present work, a power law dissipative Carnot like heat engine cycle of two irreversible isothermal and two irreversible adiabatic processes with finite time non-adiabatic dissipation is considered and the efficiency under two optimization criteria $\dotΩ$ figure of merit and efficient power, $χ_{ep}$ is studied. The generalized extreme bounds of the optimized efficiency under the above said optimization criteria are obtained. The lower and upper bounds of the efficiency for the low dissipation Carnot-like heat engine under these optimization criteria are obtained with dissipation level …
We investigate the efficiency at maximum power of an irreversible Carnot engine performing finite-time cycles between two reservoirs at temperatures $T_h$ and $T_c$ $(T_c<T_h)$, taking into account of internally dissipative friction in two "adiabatic" processes. In the frictionless case, the efficiencies at maximum power output are retrieved to be situated between $η_{_C}/$ and $η_{_C}/(2-η_{_C})$, with $η_{_C}=1-T_c/{T_h}$ being the Carnot efficiency. The strong limits of the dissipations in the hot and cold isothermal processes lead to the result that the efficiency at maximum power output a…
There has been many studies on gases which obeys Van der Waal's equation of state. However there is no specific and direct studies of Van der Waal's gas which undergoes adiabatic processes are available in the undergraduate text books and also in literature. In an adiabatic process there is no heat energy exchange between the system and its surroundings. In this article, we find that the Van der Waal's equation for the adiabatic process as $\left(P+\frac{n^2a}{V^2}\right) \left(V-nb\right)^Γ=\mbox{constant}$, where $P$ is the pressure, $V$ is the volume, $n$ is the number of moles of the Van d…
In order to build a quantum analog of traditional Carnot engine, a common choice is replacing the two thermodynamic adiabatic processes with two quantum mechanical adiabatic processes. In general, such quantum Carnot engine has six strokes. We analyze the efficiency of such six-stroke quantum Carnot engine in a perturbative way.
We study the coefficient of performance (COP) and its bounds of the Canot-like refrigerator working between two heat reservoirs at constant temperatures $T_h$ and $T_c$, under two optimization criteria $χ$ and $Ω$. In view of the fact that an "adiabatic" process takes finite time and is nonisentropic, the nonadiabatic dissipation and the finite time required for the "adiabatic" processes are taken into account. For given optimization criteria, we find that the lower and upper bounds of the COP are the same as the corresponding ones obtained from the previous idealized models where any adiabati…
We review a series of experimental studies of the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium processes at the microscale. In particular, in these experiments we studied the fluctuations of the thermodynamic properties of a single optically-trapped microparticle immersed in water and in the presence of external random forces. In equilibrium, the fluctuations of the position of the particle can be described by an effective temperature that can be tuned up to thousands of Kelvins. Isothermal and non-isothermal thermodynamic processes that also involve changes in a control parameter were implemented by cont…
We study the possibility of achieving the Carnot efficiency in a finite-power underdamped Brownian Carnot cycle. Recently, it was reported that the Carnot efficiency is achievable in a general class of finite-power Carnot cycles in the vanishing limit of the relaxation times. Thus, it may be interesting to clarify how the efficiency and power depend on the relaxation times by using a specific model. By evaluating the heat-leakage effect intrinsic in the underdamped dynamics with the instantaneous adiabatic processes, we demonstrate that the compatibility of the Carnot efficiency and finite pow…
Achieving the Carnot efficiency at finite power is a challenging problem in heat engines due to the trade-off relation between efficiency and power that holds for general heat engines. It is pointed out that the Carnot efficiency at finite power may be achievable in the vanishing limit of the relaxation times of a system without breaking the trade-off relation. However, any explicit model of heat engines that realizes this scenario for arbitrary temperature difference has not been proposed. Here, we investigate an underdamped Brownian Carnot cycle where the finite-time adiabatic processes conn…
We construct an example of heat engine whose efficiency at maximum power breaks down the previously derived bounds in the linear response regime. Such example takes a classical harmonic oscillator as the working substance undergoing a finite-time Otto cycle. Using a specific kind of shortcut to adiabaticity, valid only in the linear response regime, quasistatic work is performed at arbitrarily short times. The cycle duration is then reduced to the sum of relaxation times during the thermalization strokes exclusively. Thus, power is maximum since the work is maximum (quasistatic work) and the c…
An adiabatic piston, separating two granular gases prepared in the same macroscopic state, is found to eventually collapse to one of the sides. This new instability is explained by a simple macroscopic theory which is furthermore in qualitative agreement with hard disk molecular dynamics.
Carnot's four-part ideal-gas cycle includes both isothermal and adiabatic expansions and compressions. Analyzing this cycle provides the fundamental basis for statistical thermodynamics. We explore the cycle here from a pedagogical view in order to promote understanding of the macroscopic thermodynamic entropy, the state function associated with thermal energy changes. From the alternative microscopic viewpoint the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}(q,p)$ is the energy and entropy is the (logarithm of the) phase-space volume $Ω$ associated with a macroscopic state. We apply two novel forms of Hamiltonian m…

We revisit and analyze the thermodynamic efficiency of the Feynman-Smoluchowski (FS) ratchet, a classical thought experiment describing an autonomous heat-work converter. Starting from the full kinetics of the FS ratchet and deriving the exact forms of the hidden dissipations resulting from coarse-graining, we restate the historical controversy over its thermodynamic efficiency. The existence of hidden entropy productions implies that the standard framework of stochastic thermodynamics applied to the coarse-grained descriptions fails in capturing the dissipative feature of the system. In respo…
We analyse non-equilibrium Carnot-like cycles built with a colloidal particle in a harmonic trap, which is immersed in a fluid that acts as a heat bath. Our analysis is carried out in the overdamped regime. The cycle comprises four branches: two isothermal processes and two \textit{locally} adiabatic ones. In the latter, both the temperature of the bath and the stiffness of the harmonic trap vary in time, but in such a way that the average heat vanishes for all times. All branches are swept at a finite rate and, therefore, the corresponding processes are irreversible, not quasi-static. Specifi…
It was reported that, if and only if the specific heat, correlation length, and dynamical exponents $α, ν$ and $z$, fulfill the condition $α-zν>0$, the phase transitions can enable a quantum heat engine to approach Carnot efficiency at finite power. We start our analysis via a different approach in which the effects of interaction and fluctuations on the Hamiltonian of a trapped dilute Bose gas belonging to the same universality as $XY$ model. Based on models of quantum Otto heat engines, we find the general expression of the efficiency which includes the correction due to interaction and fluc…
We construct a microscopic model of low-dissipation engines by driving a Brownian particle in a time-dependent harmonic potential. Shortcuts to adiabaticity and shortcuts to isothermality are introduced to realize the adiabatic and isothermal branches in a thermodynamic cycle, respectively. We derive an analytical expression of the efficiency at maximum power for this kind of engines. This expression satisfies the universal law of efficiency at maximum power up to the second order of the Carnot efficiency. We also analyze the issue of power at any given efficiency for general low-dissipation e…
We analyze the performance of slowly driven meso- and micro-scale refrigerators and heat engines that operate between two thermal baths with small temperature difference. Using a general scaling argument, we show that such devices can work arbitrarily close to their Carnot limit only if heat-leaks between the baths are fully suppressed. Their power output is then subject to a universal geometric bound that decays quadratically to zero at the Carnot limit. This bound can be asymptotically saturated in the quasi-static limit if the driving protocols are suitably optimized and the temperature dif…
In this work an example of a cyclic engine based on a quantum-mechanical properties of the strongly non linear quantum oscillator described by the Poschl-Teller [PT] model is examined. Using the [PT] model as shown in our earlier works [1-4], a quantum-mechanical analog of Carnot cycle (i.e quantum heat engine) has been constructed through the changes of both, the width L of the well and its quantum state. This quantum heat engine has a cycle consisting of adiabatic and isothermal quantum processes. The efficiency of the quantum engine based on the Poschl-Teller-like potential is derived and i…
The quantum analog of Carnot cycles in few-particle systems consists of two quantum adiabatic steps and two isothermal steps. This construction is formally justified by use of a minimum work principle. It is then shown, without relying on any microscopic interpretations of work or heat, that the heat-to-work efficiency of the quantum Carnot cycle thus constructed may be further optimized, provided that two conditions regarding the expectation value of some generalized force operators evaluated at equilibrium states are satisfied. In general the optimized efficiency is system-specific, lower th…
In existing linear response theories for adiabatically driven cyclic heat engines, Onsager symmetry is identified only phenomenologically, and a relation between global and local Onsager coefficients, defined over one cycle and at any instant of a cycle, respectively, is not derived. To address this limitation, we develop a linear response theory for the speed of adiabatically changing parameters and temperature differences in generic Gaussian heat engines obeying Fokker--Planck dynamics. We establish a hierarchical relationship between the global linear response relations, defined over one cy…
In Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 66}, 847 (1991), T. B. Kepler and M. L. Kagan derived a geometric phase shift in dissipative limit cycle evolution. This effect was considered as an extension of the geometric phase in classical mechanics. We show that the converse is also true, namely, this geometric phase can be identified with the classical mechanical Hannay angle in an extended phase space. Our results suggest that this phase can be generalized to a stochastic evolution with an additional noise term in evolution equations.
We have studied the single particle heat engine and refrigerator driven by time asymmetric protocol of finite duration. Our system consists of a particle in a harmonic trap with time-periodic strength that drives the particle cyclically between two baths. Each cycle consists of two isothermal steps at different temperatures and two adiabatic steps connecting them. The system works in irreversible mode of operation even in the quasistatic regime. This is indicated by finite entropy production even in the large cycle time limit. Consequently, Carnot efficiency for heat engine or Carnot Co-effici…
A heat engine operating on the basis of the Carnot cycle is considered, where the mechanical work performed is dissipated within the engine at the temperature of the warmer isotherm and the resulting heat is added to the engine together with an external heat input. The resulting work performed by the engine per cycle is increased at the expense of dissipated work produced in the previous cycle. It is shown that such a dissipative heat engine is thermodynamically inconsistent violating the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The existing physical models employing the dissipative heat engin…
The thermodynamics of the Curzon-Ahlborn engine, which is a prototype of endoreversible engines, is elucidated. In particular, their criterion for adiabatic equilibration is revised. The so-called irreversibility of endoreversible engines arises from the selection of the coldest reservoir for heat rejection. Rather, if the reservoirs are allowed to come into thermal and mechanical contact, a mean value results which optimizes the work output and heat uptake, and is entirely reversible. The Carnot efficiency cannot be beaten because nothing is as cold as the coldest reservoir.
We provide a complete solution to hydrodynamic transport at all orders in the gradient expansion compatible with the second law constraint. The key new ingredient we introduce is the notion of adiabaticity, which allows us to take hydrodynamics off-shell. Adiabatic fluids are such that off-shell dynamics of the fluid compensates for entropy production. The space of adiabatic fluids is quite rich, and admits a decomposition into seven distinct classes. Together with the dissipative class this establishes the eightfold way of hydrodynamic transport. Furthermore, recent results guarantee that dis…
The quantum heat engines have drawn much attention due to miniaturization of devices recently. We study the dynamics of the quantum Otto heat engine using the driven-dissipative Schrödinger equation. Starting from different initial states, we simulate the time evolutions of the internal energy, power and heat-work conversion efficiency. The initial state impacts on these thermodynamic quantities before the Otto cycle reaches stable. In the transition period, the efficiency and power may be higher or lower than the corresponding values in the cyclostationary state. Remarkably, the efficiency co…
In this paper, we consider a model of two-level quantum heat engine to investigate the explicit analytic expression for the thermodynamics quantities in different condition under the finite-time operation. In this engine, the working substance is composed of a spin-half particles immersed in a magnetic field. The finite-time thermodynamic processes consisting of two quantum adiabatic and two quantum isothermal processes. This processes working between two heat reservoirs with an inverse temperatures $β_{1}$ and $β_{2}$ ($<β_{1}$). In this processes, we obtain the work, heat, power and efficien…
Using the quasi-equilibrium Helmholtz energy (qHE), defined as the thermodynamic work in a quasi-static process, we investigate the thermal properties of both an isothermal process and a transition process between the adiabatic and isothermal states (adiabatic transition). Here, the work is defined by the change in energy from a steady-state to another state under a time-dependent perturbation. In particular, the work for a quasi-static change is regarded as thermodynamic work. We employ a system--bath model that involves time-dependent perturbations in both the system and the system--bath int…
In this paper, Non-Equilibrium Steady State induced by electric field and the conductivity of non-interacting fermion systems under the dissipative dynamics is discussed. The dissipation is taken into account within a framework of the quantum dynamical semigroup introduced by Davies (1977). We obtain a formula of the conductivity for the stationary state, which is applicable to arbitrary potentials. Our formula gives a justification of an adiabatic factor which is often introduced in practical calculation using Kubo formula. In addition the conductivity of crystals (i.e. periodic potentials) i…
We provide a complete characterization of hydrodynamic transport consistent with the second law of thermodynamics at arbitrary orders in the gradient expansion. A key ingredient in facilitating this analysis is the notion of adiabatic hydrodynamics, which enables isolation of the genuinely dissipative parts of transport. We demonstrate that most transport is adiabatic. Furthermore, of the dissipative part, only terms at the leading order in gradient expansion are constrained to be sign-definite by the second law (as has been derived before).
Quantum information can be encoded in the set of steady-states (SSS) of a driven-dissipative system. Non steady-states are separated by a large dissipative gap that adiabatically decouples them way while the dynamics inside the SSS is governed by an effective, dissipation-projected, Hamiltonian. The latter results from a highly non-trivial interplay between a weak driving with the fast relaxation process that continuously projects the system back to the SSS. This amounts to a novel type of environment-induced quantum Zeno effect. We prove that the dissipation-projected dynamics is of geometric…
We introduce and study the adiabatic dynamics of free-fermion models subject to a local Lindblad bath and in the presence of a time-dependent Hamiltonian. The merit of these models is that they can be solved exactly, and will help us to study the interplay between non-adiabatic transitions and dissipation in many-body quantum systems. After the adiabatic evolution, we evaluate the excess energy (average value of the Hamiltonian) as a measure of the deviation from reaching the target final ground state. We compute the excess energy in a variety of different situations, where the nature of the b…
We studied the efficiency of two different schemes for a magnetically driven quantum heat engine, by considering as the working substance a single nonrelativistic particle trapped in a cylindrical potential well, in the presence of an external magnetic field. The first scheme is a cycle, composed of two adiabatic and two isoenergetic reversible trajectories in configuration space. The trajectories are driven by a quasistatic modulation of the external magnetic-field intensity. The second scheme is a variant of the former, where the isoenergetic trajectories are replaced by isothermal ones, alo…
A quantum heat engine of a specific type is studied. This engine contains a single particle confined in the infinite square well potential with variable width and consists of three processes: the isoenergetic process (which has no classical analogs) as well as the isothermal and adiabatic processes. It is found that the engine possesses exotic properties in its performance. The efficiency takes the maximum value when the expansion ratio of the engine is appropriately set, and, in addition, the lower the temperature is, the higher the maximum efficiency becomes, highlighting aspects of the infl…
