In this article, we study a free boundary isometric embedding problem for abstract Riemannian two-manifolds with the topology of the disc. Under the assumption of positive Gauss curvature and geodesic curvature of the boundary being equal to one, we show that any such disc may be isometrically embedded into the Euclidean three space $\mathbb{R}^3$ such that the image of the boundary meets the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ orthogonally. Moreover, we also show that the embedding is unique up to rotations and reflections through planes containing the origin. Finally, we define a new Brown-York type quasi-local mass for certain free boundary surfaces and discuss its positivity.
J. Nash proved that the geometry of any Riemannian manifold M imposes no restrictions to be embedded isometrically into a (fixed) ball B_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}(1) of the Euclidean space R^N. However, the geometry of M appears, to some extent, imposing restrictions on the mean curvature vector of the embedding.
We study the properly discontinuous and isometric actions on the unit sphere of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and we get some new examples of Hilbert manifold with costant positive sectional curvature. We prove some necessary conditions for a group to act isometrically and properly discontinuously and in the case of finitely generated Abelian groups, the necessary and sufficient conditions are given.
We study general properties of holomorphic isometric embeddings of complex unit balls $\mathbb B^n$ into bounded symmetric domains of rank $\ge 2$. In the first part, we study holomorphic isometries from $(\mathbb B^n,kg_{\mathbb B^n})$ to $(Ω,g_Ω)$ with non-minimal isometric constants $k$ for any irreducible bounded symmetric domain $Ω$ of rank $\ge 2$, where $g_D$ denotes the canonical Kähler-Einstein metric on any irreducible bounded symmetric domain $D$ normalized so that minimal disks of $D$ are of constant Gaussian curvature $-2$. In particular, results concerning the upper bound of the …
We prove that a $4$-dimensional simply connected, compact critical metric of the volume functional with harmonic anti-self dual Weyl tensor and boundary isometric to a standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ is isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, $\mathbb{H}^{4}$ or $\mathbb{S}^{4}.$
Although the Nash theorem solves the isometric embedding problem, matters are inherently more involved if one is further seeking an embedding that is well-behaved from the standpoint of submanifold geometry. More generally, consider a Lipschitz map $F:M^m\to\mathbb R^n$, where $M^m$ is a Hadamard manifold whose curvature lies between negative constants. The main result of this paper is that $F$ must perform a substantial compression: For every $r>0$ and integer $k\geq 2$ there exist $k$ geodesic balls of radius $r$ in $M^m$ that are arbitrarily far from each other, but whose images under $F$ a…
We explore the relation among volume, curvature and properness of a $m$-dimensional isometric immersion in a Riemannian manifold. We show that, when the $L^p$-norm of the mean curvature vector is bounded for some $m \leq p\leq \infty$, and the ambient manifold is a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, properness is equivalent to the finiteness of the volume of extrinsic balls. We also relate the total absolute curvature of a surface isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold with its properness. Finally, we relate the curvature and the topology of a complete and non-compact $2$-Riem…
We study the volume functional on the space of constant scalar curvature metrics with a prescribed boundary metric. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for a metric to be a critical point, and show that the only domains in space forms, on which the standard metrics are critical points, are geodesic balls. In the zero scalar curvature case, assuming the boundary can be isometrically embedded in the Euclidean space as a compact strictly convex hypersurface, we show that the volume of a critical point is always no less than the Euclidean volume bounded by the isometric embedding of the…
In this paper, we provide a complete classification for all the isometric cohomogeneity one actions on unit spheres. Using this theory, we can very easily classify all the isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Riemannian symmetric spaces $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^{m-1}$ and $\mathbb{H}\mathrm{P}^{m-1}$.
We define inductively isometric embeddings of $\mb{P}^n(\mb{R})$ and $\mb{P}^n(\mb{C})$ (with their canonical metrics conveniently scaled) into the standard unit sphere, which present the former as the restriction of the latter to the set of real points. Our argument parallels the telescopic construction of $\mb{P}^\infty(\mb{R})$, $\mb{P}^\infty(\mb{C})$, and $\mb{S}^\infty$ in that, for each $n$, it extends the previous embedding to the attaching cell, which after a suitable renormalization makes it possible for the result to have image in the unit sphere.
Let Σbe a k-dimensional minimal surface in the unit ball B^n which meets the unit sphere orthogonally. We show that the area of Σis bounded from below by the volume of the unit ball in R^k. This answers a question posed by R. Schoen.
In the study manifolds of Ricci curvature bounded below, a stumbling obstruction is the lack of links between large-scale geometry and small-scale geometry at a fixed reference point. There have been few links (volume, dimension) when the unit ball at the point is not collapsed, that is, $\mathrm{vol}(B_1(p))\ge v>0$. In this paper, we conjecture a new link in terms of isometries: if the maximal displacement of an isometry $f$ on $B_1(p)$ is at least $δ>0$, then the maximal displacement of $f$ on the rescaled unit ball $r^{-1}B_r(p)$ is at least $Φ(δ,n,v)>0$ for all $r\in(0,1)$. We call this s…
Using the linearized doubling methodology we carry out a PDE gluing construction of a discrete family of non-rotational properly immersed free boundary minimal annuli in the Euclidean unit 3-ball. The surfaces we construct resemble equatorial disks joined by half-catenoidal bridges at the boundary.
The purpose of the present paper is to show that the components of the unit normal of any minimal surface with free boundary in the unit ball, are eigenfunctions associated with the eigenvalue $-2$, for some (new) natural eigenvalue problem for the Jacobi operator; this fact has analytic (spectral) consequences for free boundary minimal surfaces in the unit $3$-ball of index $4$, and might prove useful in order to characterize these. This is also in strong analogy with the case of minimal surfaces in $S^3$.
Using the flow method, we prove some existence results for the problem of prescribing the mean curvature on the unit ball. More precisely, we prove that there exists a conformal metric on the unit ball such that its mean curvature is $f$, when $f$ possesses certain reflection or rotation symmetry.
In this article, we study local holomorphic isometric embeddings from ${\BB}^n$ into ${\BB}^{N_1}\times... \times{\BB}^{N_m}$ with respect to the normalized Bergman metrics up to conformal factors. Assume that each conformal factor is smooth Nash algebraic. Then each component of the map is a multi-valued holomorphic map between complex Euclidean spaces by the algebraic extension theorem derived along the lines of Mok and Mok-Ng. Applying holomorphic continuation and analyzing real analytic subvarieties carefully, we show that each component is either a constant map or a proper holomorphic map…
We prove that an m-dimensional unit ball D^m in the Euclidean space {\mathbb R}^m cannot be isometrically embedded into a higher-dimensional Euclidean ball B_r^d \subset {\mathbb R}^d of radius r < 1/2 unless one of two conditions is met -- (1)The embedding manifold has dimension d >= 2m. (2) The embedding is not smooth. The proof uses differential geometry to show that if d<2m and the embedding is smooth and isometric, we can construct a line from the center of D^m to the boundary that is geodesic in both D^m and in the embedding manifold {\mathbb R}^d. Since such a line has length 1, the dia…
We investigate isometric immersions of disks with constant negative curvature into $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the minimizers for the bending energy, i.e. the $L^2$ norm of the principal curvatures over the class of $W^{2,2}$ isometric immersions. We show the existence of smooth immersions of arbitrarily large geodesic balls in $\mathbb{H}^2$ into $\mathbb{R}^3$. In elucidating the connection between these immersions and the non-existence/singularity results of Hilbert and Amsler, we obtain a lower bound for the $L^\infty$ norm of the principal curvatures for such smooth isometric immersions. We also …
We will show that a universal covering of a compact Kähler manifold with ample canonical bundle is the unit ball if it admits a global potential function of the Kähler-Einstein metric whose gradient length is a minimal constant. As an application, we will extend the Wong-Rosay theorem to a complex manifold without boundary.
In this paper, we construct an asymptotically hyperbolic metric with scalar curvature -6 on unit ball $\mathbf{D}^3$, which contains multiple horizons.
In this paper we study the projective automorphism group of domains in real, complex, and quaternionic projective space and present two new characterizations of the unit ball in terms of the size of the automorphism group and the regularity of the boundary.
We present a new blow-up method that allows for establishing the first general formula to compute the perimeter measure with respect to the spherical Hausdorff measure in noncommutative nilpotent groups. This result leads us to an unexpected relationship between the area formula with respect to a distance and the profile of its corresponding unit ball.
Let (M,g) be a simply connected complete Kahler manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. Assume that g has constant negative holomorphic sectional curvature outside a compact set. We prove that M is then biholomorphic to the unit ball in C^n, where dim M = n.
We show that there is no radial balanced metric on the unit ball of the Kepler manifold with not too wild boundary behavior. Additionally, we identify explicitly the weights corresponding to radial metrics with such boundary behavior which satisfy the balanced condition as far as germs at the boundary are concerned. Related results for Poincare metrics are also established.
