V1082 Sgr is a cataclysmic variable with accretion luminosity above $10^{34}$erg s$^{-1}$, indicating a mass transfer rate above $10^{-9}M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. However, its K type companion was suggested to be under-filling its Roche lobe (RL), making the high mass transfer rate a mystery. In this work we propose a possible model to explain this discrepancy. The system is proposed to be an intermediate polar, with its K type companion filling its RL. The mass of the white dwarf star is evaluated to be $0.77\pm0.11M_{\odot}$ from both X-ray continuum fitting and Fe line flux ratio measurements. We make numerical simulations to search for the possible progenitors of the system. The results show that a binary with an initial 1.5--2.5$M_{\odot}$ companion in a 1--2 day orbit (or an initial 1.0--1.4$M_{\odot}$ companion in a 3.2--4.1 day orbit) may naturally evolve to a cataclysmic variable with a $\sim 0.55 \pm 0.11M_{\odot}$, Roche-lobe filling companion in a 0.86 day orbit. The effective temperature of the donor star, the mass transfer rate, and the derived V band magnitude are all consistent with previous observations.
AIMS: A few well studied cataclysmic variables (CVs) have shown discrete characteristic frequencies of fast variability; the most prominent ones are around log(f/Hz) $\simeq$ -3. Because we still have only small number statistics, we obtained a new observation to test whether this is a general characteristic of CVs, especially if mass transfer occurs at a high rate typical for dwarf nova in outbursts, in the so called "high state". METHODS: We analyzed optical Kepler data of the quiescent nova and intermediate polar V4743 Sgr. This system hosts a white dwarf accreting through a disk in the hig…
We present the analysis results of an eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) V729 Sgr, based on our observations and AAVSO data. Some outburst parameters were determined such as outburst amplitude ($A_{n}$) and recurrence time ($T_{n}$), and then the relationship between $A_{n}$ and $T_{n}$ is discussed. A cursory examination for the long-term light curves reveals that there are small-amplitude outbursts and dips present, which is similar to the behaviors seen in some nova-like CVs (NLs). More detailed inspection suggests that the outbursts in V729 Sgr may be Type A (outside-in) with a rise time …
We discuss a method for determination of the size of the emitting region close to the compact star in a binary system with eclipses by a secondary, which fills its Roche lobe. The often used approach is to model the Roche lobe by a sphere with the "effective radius" corresponding to the volume of the Roche lobe. This approach leads to a 4-6% overestimate of the radius, if taking into account the angular dimensions of the Roche lobe seen form the compact star. Andronov (1992) had shown that the projection of the Roche lobe onto the celestial sphere is close to an ellipse and had tabulated these…
In our earlier Paper I we showed that the accretion disc radius of the dwarf nova HT Cas in its quiescent state has not changed significantly during many years of observations. It has remained consistently large, close to the tidal truncation radius. This result is inconsistent with the modern understanding of the evolution of the disc radius through an outburst cycle. Here we present a new set of time-resolved spectra of HT Cas obtained in the middle of its 2017 superoutburst. We used Doppler tomography to map emission structures in the system, which we compared with those detected in quiesce…
We present the results of MeerKAT radio observations of eleven nearby novalike cataclysmic variables. We have detected radio emission from IM Eri, RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql. While RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql had been previously detected, this is the first reported radio detection of IM Eri. Our observations have doubled the sample of non-magnetic CVs with sensitive radio data. We observe that at our radio detection limits, a specific optical luminosity $\gtrsim 2.2\times 10^{18}$ erg/s/Hz (corresponding to $M_V \lesssim 6.0$) is required to produce a radio detection. We also observe th…
An XMM-Newton observation of the nearby "pre-cataclysmic" short-period (P_orb = 3.62 hr) binary QS Vir (EC 13471-1258) revealed regular narrow X-ray eclipses when the white dwarf passed behind its M2-4 dwarf companion. The X-ray emission provides a clear signature of mass transfer and accretion onto the white dwarf. The low-resolution XMM-Newton EPIC spectra are consistent with a cooling flow model and indicate an accretion rate of Mdot= 1.7\times10^-13M\odot/yr. At 48 pc distant, QS Vir is then the second nearest accreting cataclysmic variable known, with one of the lowest accretion rates fou…
We present high-speed photometry covering one eclipse of the cataclysmic variable system 1RXS J180834.7+101041. The data are modelled as arising from a close binary system containing a low-mass stars filling its Roche lobe plus a white dwarf with an accretion disc. We find an orbital inclination of 77.07 +/- 0.47 degrees and a mass ratio of 0.168 +/- 0.016. The relatively low inclination means that only the accretion disc and not the white dwarf are eclipsed by the low-mass star in this system.
The dependencies of the phase of eclipse of the white dwarf's centre and the durations of the ascending and descending branches of the light curve on the binary system's parameters were computed using the spherically-symmetric approximation and the more accurate model of the elliptical projection onto the celestial sphere of the companion (red dwarf) that fills its Roche lobe. The parameters of eclipses in the classical eclipsing polar OTJ 071126+440405 = CSS 081231:071126+440405 were estimated.
We obtained time-series radial velocity spectroscopy of twenty cataclysmic variable stars, with the aim of determining orbital periods P_orb. All of the stars reported here prove to have P_orb > 3.5 h. For sixteen of the stars, these are the first available period determinations, and for the remaining four (V709 Cas, AF Cam, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) we use new observations to improve the accuracy of previously-published periods. Most of the targets are dwarf novae, without notable idiosyncracies. Of the remainder, three (V709 Cas, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) are intermediate polars (DQ Her …
The flow structure in magnetic cataclysmic variables was investigated taking into account the effects of strong magnetic field and fast rotation of the white dwarf. We modeled the AE Aqr system as a unique object that has the rotation period of the white dwarf is about 1000 times shorter than the orbital period of the binary system. Observations show that in spite of fast rotation of the white dwarf some part of the stream from the inner Lagrange point comes into the Roche lobe region. We analyzed possible mechanisms preventing material to outflow from the system.
We explore conditions and structure of accretion disks in short-period Cata- clysmic Variables (CVs), which have evolved beyond the period minimum. We show that accretion discs in systems with extreme mass ratios grow up to the size of corresponding Roche lobe and are relatively cool. In contrast, the viscosity and temperature in spiral arms formed as a result of a 2:1 resonance are higher and their contribution plays an increasingly important role. We model such discs and generate light curves which successfully simulate the observed double-humped light curves of SDSS1238, SDSS0804, SDSS1610 …
We present LAMOST J0140355+392651 (hereafter J0140), a close ($P_{\rm orb} = 3.81$ hours) binary containing a bloated, low-mass ($M \approx 0.15 M_{\odot}$) proto-white dwarf (WD) and a massive ($M\approx 0.95\,M_{\odot}$) WD companion. The system's optical light curve is dominated by large-amplitude ellipsoidal variability but also exhibits additional scatter, likely driven by pulsations. The proto-WD is cooler ($T_{\rm eff} = 6800\pm 100$ K) and more puffy ($\log\left[g/\left({\rm cm\,s^{-2}}\right)\right]=4.74\pm0.07$) than any known extremely low mass (ELM) WD, but hotter than any known ca…
We report the discovery of 1RXH J082623.6-505741, a 10.4 hr orbital period compact binary. Modeling extensive optical photometry and spectroscopy reveals a $\sim 0.4 M_{\odot}$ K-type secondary transferring mass through a low-state accretion disk to a non-magnetic $\sim 0.8 M_{\odot}$ white dwarf. The secondary is overluminous for its mass and dominates the optical spectra at all epochs, and must be evolved to fill its Roche Lobe at this orbital period. The X-ray luminosity $L_X \sim 1$-$2 \times 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ derived from both new XMM-Newton and archival observations, although high co…
We have started a project to investigate the connection of post-novae with the population of cataclysmic variables. Our first steps in this concern improving the sample of known post-novae and their properties. Here we present the recovery and/or confirmation of the old novae MT Cen, V812 Cen, V655 CrA, IL Nor, V2109 Oph, V909 Sgr, V2572 Sgr, and V728 Sco. Principal photometric and spectroscopic properties of these systems are discussed. We find that V909 Sgr is a probable magnetic CV, and that V728 Sco is a high-inclination system. We furthermore suggest that the two candidate novae V734 Sco …
We present a binary evolution study of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and related systems with white dwarf accretors, including for example, AM CVn systems, classical novae, supersoft X-ray sources, and systems with giant donor stars. Our approach intentionally avoids the complications associated with population synthesis algorithms thereby allowing us to present the first truly comprehensive exploration of all of the subsequent binary evolution pathways that ZACVs might follow (assuming fully non-conservative, Roche-lobe overflow onto an accreting WD) using the sophisticated binary stellar evolu…

We report the discovery of 11 bipolar outflows within a projected distance of 1pc from Sgr A* based on deep ALMA observations of $^{13}$CO, H30$α$ and SiO (5-4) lines with sub-arcsecond and $\sim1.3$ km/s, resolutions. These unambiguous signatures of young protostars manifest as approaching and receding lobes of dense gas swept up by the jets created during the formation and early evolution of stars. The lobe masses and momentum transfer rates are consistent with young protostellar outflows found throughout the disk of the Galaxy. The mean dynamical age of the outflow population is estimated t…
We present the discovery of a 3h5m orbital-period binary star at the heart of the planetary nebula M 3-1 - the shortest period photometrically-variable central star known and second only to V458 Vul, in general. Combined modelling of light and radial velocity curves reveals both components to be close to Roche-lobe-filling, strongly indicating that the central star will rapidly evolve to become a cataclysmic variable, perhaps experiencing a similar evolution to V458 Vul resulting in a nova eruption before the planetary nebula has fully dissipated. While the short orbital period and near Roche-…
We conducted time-resolved optical spectroscopy and/or photometry of ten cataclysmic binaries that were discovered in hard X-ray surveys, with the goal of measuring their orbital periods and searching for evidence that they are magnetic. Four of the objects in this study are new optical identifications: IGR J18017$-$3542, PBC J1841.1+0138, IGR J18434$-$0508, and Swift J1909.3+0124. A 311.8 s, coherent optical pulsation is detected from PBC J1841.1+0138, as well as eclipses with a period of 0.221909 days. A 152.49 s coherent period is detected from IGR J18434$-$0508. A probable period of 389 s …
The cataclysmic variable MV Lyr was present in the Kepler field yielding a light curve with the duration of almost 1500 days with 60 second cadence. Such high quality data of this nova-like system with obvious fast optical variability show multicomponent power density spectra. Our goal is to study the light curve from different point of view, and perform a shot profile analysis. We search for characteristics not discovered with standard power density spectrum based methods. The shot profile method identifies individual shots in the light curve, and averages them in order to get all substructur…
We obtained high-resolution spectra and multicolor photometry of V1082 Sgr to study the donor star in this 20.8 hr orbital period binary, which is assumed to be a detached system. We measured the rotational velocity (v sin i = 26.5+/-2.0 km/s), which, coupled with the constraints on the white dwarf mass from the X-ray spectroscopy, leads to the conclusion that the donor star barely fills 70% of its corresponding Roche lobe radius. It appears to be a slightly evolved K2-type star. This conclusion was further supported by a recently published distance to the binary system measured by the Gaia mi…
Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity is an important modification of Einstein's general relativity, which can give rise to non-singular cosmologies at the classical level, and avoid the end-stage singularity in a gravitational collapse process. In the Newtonian limit, this theory gives rise to a modified Poisson's equation, as a consequence of which stellar observables acquire model dependent corrections, compared to the ones computed in the low energy limit of general relativity. This can in turn be used to establish astrophysical constraints on the theory. Here, we obtain such a constraint…
Since a large population of massive O/B stars and putative neutron stars (NSs) located in the vicinity of the Galactic center (GC), intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs) constituted by a NS and a B-type star probably exist here. We investigate the evolutions of accreting NSs in IMXBs (similar to M82 X-2) with a $\sim5.2M_\odot$ companion, and orbit period $\simeq2.53$ day. By adopting an mildly super-Eddington rate $\dot{M}=6\times10^{-8}M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ for the early Case B Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) accretion, we find only in accreting NSs with quite elastic crusts (slippage factor …
The magnetic cataclysmic variables (MCVs) present a wealth of observational diagnostics for studying accretion flows interacting with a magnetosphere. Spin-period pulsations from the rotation of the white dwarf are seen in optical light, in the UV and X-ray bands, and in polarimetry, and modelling these can constrain the size and location of the accretion footprints on the white-dwarf surface. Tracing these back along field lines can tell us about the transition region between the stream or disk and the magnetosphere. Further, optical emission lines give us velocity information, while analysis…
The structure of plasma flows in close binary systems in which one of the components is a rapidly rotating magnetic white dwarf is studied. The main example considered is the AE Aquarii system; the spin period of the white dwarf is about a factor of 1000 shorter than the orbital period, and the magnetic field on the white dwarf surface is of order of 50 MG. The mass transfer in this system was analyzed via numerical solution of the system of MHD equations. These computations show that the magnetic field of the white dwarf does not significantly influence the velocity field of the material in i…

The observations of the two-periodic magnetic cataclysmic system EX Hya have been carried out, using the telescopes RC16 and TOA-150 of the Tzec Maun observatory. 6 nights of observations were obtained in 2010-2011 (alternatively changing filters VR). Also the databases of WASP, ASAS and AAVSO have been analyzed. Processing time series was carried out using the program MCV. We analyzed changes in the rotation period of the white dwarf, and based on our own and previously published moments of maximum. The ephemeris was determined for the maxima of the radiation flux associated with the rotation…
We analyze 45 spectropolarimetric observations of the eclipsing, interacting binary star V356 Sgr, obtained over a period of 21 years, to characterize the geometry of the system's circumstellar material. After removing interstellar polarization from these data, we find the system exhibits a large intrinsic polarization signature arising from electron scattering. In addition, the lack of repeatable eclipses in the polarization phase curves indicates the presence of a substantial pool of scatterers not occulted by either star. We suggest that these scatterers form either a circumbinary disk copl…
Magnitude-limited samples have shown that 20-25 per cent of cataclysmic variables contain white dwarfs with magnetic fields of Mega Gauss strength, in stark contrast to the approximately 5 per cent of single white dwarfs with similar magnetic field strengths. Moreover, the lack of identifiable progenitor systems for magnetic cataclysmic variables leads to considerable challenges when trying to understand how these systems form and evolve. Here we present a sample of six magnetic white dwarfs in detached binaries with low-mass stellar companions where we have constrained the stellar and binary …
Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are binaries in which a compact white dwarf accretes material from a low-mass companion star. The discovery of two planets in orbit around the CV HU Aquarii opens unusual opportunities for understanding the formation and evolution of this system. In particular the orbital parameters of the planets constrains the past and enables us to reconstruct the evolution of the system through the common-envelope phase. During this dramatic event the entire hydrogen envelope of the primary star is ejected, passing the two planets on the way. The observed eccentricities and orbi…
Among the competing evolution theories for subdwarf-B (sdB) stars is the binary evolution scenario. EC~20117-4014 (=V4640~Sgr) is a spectroscopic binary system consisting of a pulsating sdB star and a late F main-sequence companion (O'Donoghue et al. 1997), however the period and the orbit semi-major axes have not been precisely determined. This paper presents orbital characteristics of the EC 20117-4014 binary system using 20 years of photometric data. Periodic Observed minus Calculated (O-C) variations were detected in the two highest amplitude pulsations identified in the EC 20117-4014 powe…
We report the discovery of a relatively bright eclipsing binary system, which consists of a white dwarf and a main sequence K7 star with clear signs of chromospheric and spot activity. The light curve of this system shows $\sim0.2$mag ellipsoidal variability with a period of 0.297549d and a short total eclipse of the white dwarf. Based on our analysis of the spectral and photometric data, we estimated the parameters of the system. The K7V star is tidally deformed but does not fill its Roche lobe (the filling factor is about 0.86). The orbital inclination is $i=73^\circ.1\pm 0^\circ.2$, the mas…
I report on two new measures of the sudden change in the orbital period ($P$) across the nova eruption ($Δ$P) and the steady period change in quiescence ($\dot{P}$) for classical novae (CNe) RR Pic and HR Del, bringing a total of six such measures for CNe, all in a final report of my large and long observing program. The fractional changes ($Δ$P/P) in parts-per-million (ppm) are -290.71$\pm$0.28 (QZ Aur), -472.1$\pm$4.8 (HR Del), -4.46$\pm$0.03 (DQ Her), +39.6$\pm$0.5 (BT Mon), -2003.7$\pm$0.9 (RR Pic), and -273$\pm$61 (V1017 Sgr). These results are in stark opposition to the Hibernation Model…
We examine the growing class of binary millisecond pulsars known as redbacks. In these systems the pulsar's companion has a mass between 0.1 and about 0.5 solar masses in an orbital period of less than 1.5 days. All show extended radio eclipses associated with circumbinary material. They do not lie on the period-companion mass relation expected from the canonical intermediate-mass X-ray binary evolution in which the companion filled its Roche lobe as a red giant and has now lost its envelope and cooled as a white dwarf. The redbacks lie closer to, but usually at higher period than, the period-…
We present a systematic survey for mass-transferring and recently-detached cataclysmic variables (CVs) with evolved secondaries, which are progenitors of extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs), AM CVn systems, and detached ultracompact binaries. We select targets below the main sequence in the Gaia color-magnitude diagram with ZTF light curves showing large-amplitude ellipsoidal variability and orbital period $P_{\rm orb} < 6$ hr. This yields 51 candidates brighter than G=18, of which we have obtained many-epoch spectra for 21. We confirm all 21 to be completely -- or nearly -- Roche lobe f…
This work reports new photometric results of eclipsing cataclysmic variable V617 Sagittarii (V617 Sgr). We analyzed the orbital period change of V617 Sgr, by employing three new CCD eclipse timings since 2010 along with all the available data from the literature. It was found that the orbital period of V617 Sgr undergoes an obvious long-term increase, which confirms the result revealed by Steiner et al. (2006). The rate of orbital period increase was calculated to be ${\dot{P}}$ = +2.14(0.05) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ day/year. This suggests the lifetime of the secondary star will attain to the end i…

Searching for similarities in the accretion flow of Seyfert 1 galaxies and cataclysmic variables based on flare profiles of IRAS 13224-3809, 1H 0707-495, Mrk 766 and MV Lyr
Context: Classical nova progenitors are cataclysmic variables and very old novae are observed to match high mass transfer rate and (relatively) long orbital period systems. However, the aftermath of a classical nova has never been studied in detail. Aims: To probe the aftermath of a classical nova explosion in cataclysmic variables and observe as the binary system relaxes to quiescence. Methods: We used multi-wavelength time resolved optical and near-infrared spectroscopy for a bright, well studied classical nova five years after outburst. We were able to disentangle the contribution of the ej…
Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binaries which consist of a compact object - a white dwarf - and a red dwarf filling its Roche Lobe. Such systems are physical laboratories which enable study of the influence of magnetic fields on matter flows. They often exhibit spin-up or spin-down of the white dwarf, while some systems exhibit more complex behaviour of the spin period change. We monitor changes of the spin periods of white dwarfs in a sample of close binary systems to study interaction of the magnetic field and accretion processes as well as evolution of intermediate polars. Within …
During a visual search through the Kepler main-field lightcurves, we have discovered a cataclysmic variable (CV) that experienced only a single 4-day long outburst over four years, rising to three times the quiescent flux. During the four years of non-outburst data the Kepler photometry of KIC 5608384 exhibits ellipsoidal light variations (`ELV') with a $\sim$12% amplitude and period of 8.7 hours. Follow-up ground-based spectral observations have yielded a high-quality radial velocity curve and the associated mass function. Additionally, H$α$ emission lines were present in the spectra even tho…
We report the discovery of an extremely close white dwarf plus F dwarf main-sequence star in a 12 hour binary identified by combining data from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) survey. A combination of spectral energy distribution fitting and optical and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopy allowed us to place fairly precise constraints on the physical parameters of the binary. The system, TYC 6760-497-1, consists of a hot Teff~20,000K, M~0.6Ms white dwarf and an F8 star (M~1.23Ms, R~1.3Rs) seen at a low inclination (i~37 deg). T…
A nova eruption irradiates and heats the donor star in a cataclysmic variable to high temperatures $T_{\rm irr}$, causing its outer layers to expand and overflow the Roche lobe. We calculate the donor's heating and expansion both analytically and numerically, under the assumption of spherical symmetry, and find that irradiation drives enhanced mass transfer from the donor at a rate $\dot{m}\propto T_{\rm irr}^{5/3}$, which reaches $\dot{m}\sim 10^{-6}\textrm{ M}_\odot\textrm{ yr}^{-1}$ at the peak of the eruption - about a thousand times faster than during quiescence. As the nova subsides and …
We present a long-term light curve of the precataclysmic variable (CV) V1082 Sgr obtained by the K2-mission over the course of 81 days. We analyze the entire complex light curve as well as explore several sections in detail with a sliding periodogram. The long dataset allows the first detection of the orbital period in the light curve, as well as the confirmation of cyclical variability on a longer timescale of about a month. A portion of the light curve in deep minimum reveals a clean, near-sinusoidal variability attributed to the rotation of the spotted surface of the donor star. We model th…
Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) and Symbiotic Binaries are close (or not so close) binary star systems which contain both a white dwarf (WD) primary and a larger cooler secondary star that typically fills its Roche Lobe. The cooler star is losing mass through the inner Lagrangian point of the binary and a fraction of this material is accreted by the WD. Here we report on our hydrodynamic studies of the thermonuclear runaway (TNR) in the accreted material that ends in a Classical Nova explosion. We have followed the evolution of the TNRs on both carbon-oxygen (CO) and oxygen-neon (ONe) WDs. We repo…
We present LAMOST~J041920.07+072545.4 (hereafter J0419), a close binary consisting of a bloated extremely low mass pre-white dwarf (pre-ELM WD) and a compact object with an orbital period of 0.607189~days. The large-amplitude ellipsoidal variations and the evident Balmer and He~I emission lines suggest a filled Roche lobe and ongoing mass transfer. No outburst events were detected in the 15 years of monitoring of J0419, indicating a very low mass transfer rate. The temperature of the pre-ELM, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 5793_{-133}^{+124}\,\rm K$, is cooler than the known ELMs, but hotter than most CV d…
We conducted a multi-wavelength study to unveil the properties of the extremely long-period cataclysmic variable V479 And. We performed series of observations, including moderate to high spectral resolution optical spectrophotometry, X-ray observations with Swift, linear polarimetry and near-IR photometry. This binary system is a low-inclination ~ 17^o system with a 0.594093(4) day orbital period. The absorption line complex in the spectra indicate a G8--K0 spectral type for the donor star, which has departed from the zero-age main sequence. This implies a distance to the object of about 4 kpc…
