AIMS: A few well studied cataclysmic variables (CVs) have shown discrete characteristic frequencies of fast variability; the most prominent ones are around log(f/Hz) $\simeq$ -3. Because we still have only small number statistics, we obtained a new observation to test whether this is a general characteristic of CVs, especially if mass transfer occurs at a high rate typical for dwarf nova in outbursts, in the so called "high state". METHODS: We analyzed optical Kepler data of the quiescent nova and intermediate polar V4743 Sgr. This system hosts a white dwarf accreting through a disk in the high state. We calculated the power density spectra, and searched for break or characteristic frequencies. Our goal is to assess whether the mHz frequency of the flickering is a general characteristic. RESULTS: V4743 Sgr has a clear break frequency at log(f/Hz) $\simeq$ -3. This detection increases the probability that the mHz characteristic frequency is a general feature of CVs in the high state, from 69% to 91%. Furthermore, we propose the possibility that the variability is generated by similar mechanism as in the nova-like system MV Lyr, which would make V4743 Sgr unique.
We performed simultaneous observations in 3 bands (UBV) of the flickering variability of the recurrent novae RS Oph and T CrB at quiescence. Using new and published data, we compare the colours of the flickering in cataclysmic variables and symbiotic recurrent novae. We find a difference between the colours of the flickering source in these two types of accreting white dwarfs. The detected difference is highly significant with $ p-value \approx 2 \times 10^{-6}$ for the distributions of $(U-B)_0$ colour and $p \approx 3 \times 10^{-5}$ on (U-B) versus (B-V) diagram. The possible physical reaso…
Flickering is a universal phenomenon in accreting astronomical systems which still defies detailed physical understanding. It is particularly evident in cataclysmic variables (CVs). Attempting to define boundary conditions for models, the strength of the flickering is measured in several thousand light curves of more than 100 CVs. The flickering amplitude is parameterized by the FWHM of a Gaussian fit to the magnitude distribution of data points in a light curve. This quantity requires several corrections before a comparison between different sources can be made. While no correlations of the f…
Recently, wavelets and R/S analysis have been used as statistical tools to characterize the optical flickering of cataclysmic variables. Here we present the first comprehensive study of the statistical properties of X-ray flickering of cataclysmic variables in order to link them with physical parameters. We analyzed a sample of 97 X-ray light curves of 75 objects of all classes observed with the XMM-Newton space telescope. By using the wavelets analysis, each light curve has been characterized by two parameters, alpha and Sigma, that describe the energy distribution of flickering on different …
Flickering is a ubiquitous phenomenon in cataclysmic variables (CVs). Although the underlying light source is one of the main contributors to the optical radiation, the mechanism leading to flickering is not understood as yet. The present study aims to contribute to the set of boundary conditions, defined by observations, which must be met by physical models that describe the flickering. In particular, time lags in the occurrence of flickering events at different wavelengths over the optical range are examined. To this end, the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) of numerous light curves of a s…
The majority of cataclysmic variable (CV) stars contain a stochastic noise component in their light curves, commonly referred to as flickering. This can significantly affect the morphology of CV eclipses and increases the difficulty in obtaining accurate system parameters with reliable errors through eclipse modelling. Here we introduce a new approach to eclipse modelling, which models CV flickering with the help of Gaussian processes (GPs). A parameterised eclipse model - with an additional GP component - is simultaneously fit to 8 eclipses of the dwarf nova ASASSN-14ag and system parameters …
As part of an effort to better characterize bright cataclysmic variables (CVs) which have received little attention in the past light curves of four confirmed systems (CZ Aql, BO Cet, V380 Oph and EF Tuc) and one candidate (Lib 3) are analyzed. For none of these stars time resolved photometry has been published previously. While no variability was found in the case of Lib 3, which thus cannot be confirmed as a CV, the light curves of all other targets are dominated by strong flickering. Modulations on hourly time scales superimposed on the flickering can probably be related to orbital variatio…
V1082 Sgr is a cataclysmic variable with accretion luminosity above $10^{34}$erg s$^{-1}$, indicating a mass transfer rate above $10^{-9}M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. However, its K type companion was suggested to be under-filling its Roche lobe (RL), making the high mass transfer rate a mystery. In this work we propose a possible model to explain this discrepancy. The system is proposed to be an intermediate polar, with its K type companion filling its RL. The mass of the white dwarf star is evaluated to be $0.77\pm0.11M_{\odot}$ from both X-ray continuum fitting and Fe line flux ratio measurements. W…
We present a detailed photometric study of the bright cataclysmic variable BG Tri using ground-based observations mainly from Rozhen Observatory, ASAS-SN, TESS, and WASP sky surveys. We report the discovery of a negative superhump with P$_{-sh}$ = 0.1515(2) days and a co-existing superorbital variation with P=3.94(53) days in data from 2019 and 2020. A positive superhump with P$_{+sh}$ = 0.1727(14) days is also discovered in data from 2006. The obtained negative superhump deficit $\varepsilon_{-}$=0.044(1) and the positive superhump excess $\varepsilon_+$=0.090(9) give us an independent photom…
We report observations of the flickering variability of the recurrent nova RS Oph at quiescence on the basis of simultaneous observations in 5 bands (UBVRI). RS Oph has flickering source with (U-B)_0=-0.62 \pm 0.07, (B-V)_0=0.15 \pm 0.10, (V-R)_0=0.25 \pm 0.05. We find for the flickering source a temperature T_fl = 9500 \pm 500 K, and luminosity L_fl = 50 - 150 L_sun (using a distance of d=1.6kpc). We also find that on a (U-B) vs (B-V) diagram the flickering of the symbiotic stars differs from that of the cataclysmic variables. The possible source of the flickering is discussed. The data are a…
We present VRI photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy of the object 2MASS J01074282+4845188. The V-shape of the eclipse, the phase variability of the colour indices as well as the presence of a pre-eclipse hump, standstill and flickering allow us to conclude that it is a nova-like cataclysmic star. This is supported by the observed broad emission Halpha line. Its single profile with a relatively narrow FWHM but large FWZI is typical for a nova-like variable of SW Sex subtype. The observed deep eclipses make the newly discovered cataclysmic star 2MASS J01074282+4845188 an interesting object…
We present the analysis results of an eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) V729 Sgr, based on our observations and AAVSO data. Some outburst parameters were determined such as outburst amplitude ($A_{n}$) and recurrence time ($T_{n}$), and then the relationship between $A_{n}$ and $T_{n}$ is discussed. A cursory examination for the long-term light curves reveals that there are small-amplitude outbursts and dips present, which is similar to the behaviors seen in some nova-like CVs (NLs). More detailed inspection suggests that the outbursts in V729 Sgr may be Type A (outside-in) with a rise time …
We report observations of the flickering variability of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS~Oph at quiescence in five bands ($UBVRI$). We find evidence of a correlation between the peak-to-peak flickering amplitude ($ΔF$) and the average flux of the hot component ($F_{\rm av}$). The correlation is highly significant, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85 and a $p$-value of~$\sim 10^{-20}$. Combining the data from all wavebands, we find a dependence of the type $ΔF \propto F^k_{\rm av}$, with power-law index $k = 1.02 \pm 0.04$ for the $UBVRI$ flickering of RS~Oph. Thus, the relationship between t…
AIMS: We studied unique data of a nova-like system MV Lyr during transition from the high to low state and vice versa taken by the Kepler space telescope. We were interested in evolution of frequency components found previously by Scaringi et al. in different data also obtained by Kepler. METHODS: We divided the light curve into 10 day segments and investigated the corresponding power density spectra. We searched for individual frequency components by fitting with Lorentzian functions. Additionally, we investigated the variability using averaged shot profiles calculated from the light curve di…
We performed 48.6 hours (in 28 nights) of simultaneous B and V band observations of the flickering variability of the recurrent nova RS Oph in quiescence. During the time of our observations the brightness of the system varied between 13.2 > B > 11.1 and the colour in the range 0.86 < B-V < 1.33 . We find that RS~Oph becomes more blue, as it becomes brighter, however the hot component becomes more red as it becomes brighter (assuming that the red giant is non-variable). During all the runs RS Oph exhibits flickering with amplitude 0.16 - 0.59 mag in B band. For the flickering source we find th…
We report simultaneous multicolour observations in 5 bands (UBVRI) of the flickering variability of the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr. Our aim is to estimate the parameters (colours, temperature, size) of the fireballs that produce the optical flares. The observed rise time of the optical flares is in the interval 220 - 440 sec. We estimate the dereddened colours of the fireballs: (U-B)_0 in the range 0.8-1.4, (B-V)_0 ~ 0.03-0.24, (V-I)_0 ~ 0.26-0.78. We find for the fireballs a temperature in the range 10000 - 25000 K, mass (7-90).10^{19} g, size (3-7).10^9 cm (using a distance of d=86 pc). The…
We present a study of the flickering activity in two nova like systems KR Aur and UU Aqr. We applied a statistical model of flickering simulations in accretion discs based on turbulent angular momentum transport between two adjacent rings with an exponential distribution of the turbulence dimension scale. The model is based on a steady state disc model which is satisfied in the case of hot ionized discs of nova like cataclysmic variables. Our model successfully fits the observed power density spectrum of KR Aur with the disc parameter alpha = 0.10 - 0.40 and an inner disc truncation radius in …
As part of a project to better characterize comparatively bright but so far little studied cataclysmic variables in the southern hemisphere, we have obtained spectroscopic and photometric data of the nova-like variables LS IV -08$^{\rm o}$ 3 and HQ Mon, and of the Z Cam type dwarf nova ST Cha. The spectra of all systems are as expected for their respective types. We derive improved orbital ephemeris of LS IV -08$^{\rm o}$ 3 and map its accretion disk in the light of the H$α$ emission using Doppler tomography. We find that the emission has a two component origin, arising in the outer parts of t…
We present the results of MeerKAT radio observations of eleven nearby novalike cataclysmic variables. We have detected radio emission from IM Eri, RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql. While RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql had been previously detected, this is the first reported radio detection of IM Eri. Our observations have doubled the sample of non-magnetic CVs with sensitive radio data. We observe that at our radio detection limits, a specific optical luminosity $\gtrsim 2.2\times 10^{18}$ erg/s/Hz (corresponding to $M_V \lesssim 6.0$) is required to produce a radio detection. We also observe th…
We report K2 observations of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable V729 Sgr which covered nearly 80 days in duration. We find five short outbursts and two long outbursts, one of which shows a clear plateau phase in the rise to maximum brightness. The mean time between successive short outbursts is ~10 d while the time between the two long outbursts is ~38 d. The frequency of these outbursts are unprecedented for a CV above the orbital period gap. We find evidence that the mid-point of the eclipse occurs systematically earlier in outburst than in quiescence. During five of the six quiescent epochs…
We have observed 8 faint cataclysmic variable stars photometrically. The nova-like Car2 was extensively sampled but showed little variability. V1040 Cen was observed near the end of a dwarf nova outburst and possessed dwarf nova and quasi-periodic oscillations. Ha 075648 has strong large amplitude flickering and a possible orbital modulation at 3.49 h. The correct identification for the nova remnant IL Nor (Nova Nor 1893) has been established. HS Pup (Nova Pup 1963) has a possible orbital period of 3.244 h. SDSS J2048-06 is a low mass transfer dwarf nova that in quiescence shows slow variation…
We analyze optical photometric data of short term variability (flickering) of accreting white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables (KR Aur, MV Lyr, V794 Aql, TT Ari, V425 Cas), recurrent novae (RS Oph and T CrB) and jet-ejecting symbiotic stars (CH Cyg and MWC 560). We find that the amplitude-flux relationship is visible over four orders of magnitude, in the range of fluxes from $10^{29}$ to $10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Å$^{-1}$, as a "statistically perfect" correlation with correlation coefficient 0.96 and p-value $ \sim 10^{-28}$. In the above range, the amplitude of variability for any of our 9 object…
As part of an effort to better characterize bright cataclysmic variables (CVs) and related systems which have received little attention in the past light curves of four systems (V504 Cen, KT Eri, Ret 1 and CTCV 2056-3014) are analyzed. For some of these stars no time resolved photometry has been published previously. While flickering is observed in all systems except Ret 1, it is particularly strong in V504 Cen and CTCV 2056-3014. In the latter star, a previously observed 15.4 m period, leading to its tentative classification as an intermediate polar, is probably spurious. Variations on time s…
We report the analysis of 22 B-band light curves of the dwarf nova V4140 Sgr obtained with SOI/SOAR during two nights along the decline of a superoutburst in 2006 Sep 12-24 and in quiescence over 50 days following the superoutburst. Three-dimensional eclipse mapping of the outburst light curves indicates that the accretion disc is elliptical (eccentricity e=0.13) and that superhump maximum occurs when the mass donor star is aligned with the bulge of the elliptical disc. The accretion disc is geometrically thin both in outburst and in quiescence; it fills the primary Roche lobe in outburst and …
We obtained time-series radial velocity spectroscopy of twenty cataclysmic variable stars, with the aim of determining orbital periods P_orb. All of the stars reported here prove to have P_orb > 3.5 h. For sixteen of the stars, these are the first available period determinations, and for the remaining four (V709 Cas, AF Cam, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) we use new observations to improve the accuracy of previously-published periods. Most of the targets are dwarf novae, without notable idiosyncracies. Of the remainder, three (V709 Cas, V1062 Tau, and RX J2133+51) are intermediate polars (DQ Her …
We present time-resolved photometry of six faint (V>17mag) cataclysmic variables (CVs); one of them is V849 Oph and the others are identified from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS J0920+0042, SDSS J1327+6528, SDSS J1227+5139, SDSS J1607.02+3623, SDSS J1457+5148). The optical CCD photometric observations of these objects were performed at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (Turkey) between February 2006 and March 2009. We aimed to detect short time scale orbital variability arisen from hot-spot modulation, flickering structures which occur from rapid fluctuations of material transferring from r…
Even among the brigher cataclysmic variables an appreciable number of objects exist about which not much is known. One of them, MU Cen, was observed as part of a small project to better characterize these neglected systems. The temporal variations of the brightness of MU Cen during quiescence were studied in order to find clues to the structure of the system and its behaviour on time scales of hours and shorter. Light curves observed in white light at a time resolution of a few seconds and with a duration of several hours, obtained in six nights and spanning a total time base of five months, w…
IPCVs contain a magnetic, rotating white dwarf surrounded by a magnetically truncated accretion disk. To explain their strong flickering X-ray emission, accretion has been successfully taken into account. Nevertheless, observations suggest that accretion phenomena could not be the only process behind it. An intense flaring activity occurring on the surface of the disk may generate a corona, contribute to the thermal X-ray emission and influence the system stability. Our purposes are: investigating the formation of an extended corona above the accretion disk, due to an intense flaring activity …
NSV 1907, formerly listed as an irregular variable in variability catalogues, was classified as an Algol-type eclipsing binary in the Catalina Surveys Periodic Variable Star Catalogue. We have identified NSV 1907 as an ultraviolet (UV) bright source using measurements from the GALEX space telescope and detected obvious out-of-eclipse variability in archival photometric data from the Catalina Sky Survey, which instigated a closer examination of the object. A spectrum and extensive multicolour photometric observations were acquired, from which we deduce that NSV 1907 is a deeply eclipsing, nova-…
We have started a project to investigate the connection of post-novae with the population of cataclysmic variables. Our first steps in this concern improving the sample of known post-novae and their properties. Here we present the recovery and/or confirmation of the old novae MT Cen, V812 Cen, V655 CrA, IL Nor, V2109 Oph, V909 Sgr, V2572 Sgr, and V728 Sco. Principal photometric and spectroscopic properties of these systems are discussed. We find that V909 Sgr is a probable magnetic CV, and that V728 Sco is a high-inclination system. We furthermore suggest that the two candidate novae V734 Sco …
Highly time-resolved time-tagged FUSE satellite spectroscopic data are analysed to establish the far-ultraviolet (FUV) absorption line characteristics of the nova-like cataclysmic variable binary, V3885 Sgr. We determine the temporal behaviour of low (Ly_beta, CIII, NIII) and high (SIV, PV, OVI) ion species, and highlight corresponding orbital phase modulated changes in these lines. On average the absorption troughs are blueshifted due to a low velocity disc wind outflow. Very rapid (~ 5 min) fluctuations in the absorption lines are isolated, which are indicative of stochastic density changes.…
The magnetic cataclysmic variables (MCVs) present a wealth of observational diagnostics for studying accretion flows interacting with a magnetosphere. Spin-period pulsations from the rotation of the white dwarf are seen in optical light, in the UV and X-ray bands, and in polarimetry, and modelling these can constrain the size and location of the accretion footprints on the white-dwarf surface. Tracing these back along field lines can tell us about the transition region between the stream or disk and the magnetosphere. Further, optical emission lines give us velocity information, while analysis…

V1017 Sgr is a classical nova (in 1919) that displayed an earlier dwarf nova eruption (in 1901), and two more dwarf nova events (in 1973 and 1991). Previous work on this bright system in quiescence (V=13.5) has only been a few isolated magnitudes, a few spectra, and an ambiguous claim for an orbital period of 5.714 days as based on nine radial velocities. To test this period, we have collected 2896 magnitudes (plus 53 in the literature) in the UBVRIJHKL bands from 1897 to 2016, making an essentially complete photometric history of this unique cataclysmic variable. We find that the light curve …
I report on two new measures of the sudden change in the orbital period ($P$) across the nova eruption ($Δ$P) and the steady period change in quiescence ($\dot{P}$) for classical novae (CNe) RR Pic and HR Del, bringing a total of six such measures for CNe, all in a final report of my large and long observing program. The fractional changes ($Δ$P/P) in parts-per-million (ppm) are -290.71$\pm$0.28 (QZ Aur), -472.1$\pm$4.8 (HR Del), -4.46$\pm$0.03 (DQ Her), +39.6$\pm$0.5 (BT Mon), -2003.7$\pm$0.9 (RR Pic), and -273$\pm$61 (V1017 Sgr). These results are in stark opposition to the Hibernation Model…
We consider the parallaxes of sixteen cataclysmic variables and related objects that are included in the TGAS catalogue, which is part of the Gaia first data release, and compare these with previous parallax measurements. The parallax of the dwarf nova SS Cyg is consistent with the parallax determination made using the VLBI, but with only one of the analyses of the HST Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) observations of this system. In contrast, the Gaia parallaxes of V603 Aql and RR Pic are broadly consistent, but less precise than the HST/FGS measurements. The Gaia parallaxes of IX Vel, V3885 Sgr, an…
The impact of nova eruptions on the long-term evolution of Cataclysmic Variables(CVs) is one of the least understood and intensively discussed topics in the field. Acrucial ingredient to improve with this would be to establish a large sample of post-novae with known properties, starting with the most easily accessible one, the orbitalperiod. Here we report new orbital periods for six faint novae: X Cir (3.71 h), ILNor (1.62 h), DY Pup (3.35 h), V363 Sgr (3.03 h), V2572 Sgr (3.75 h) and CQ Vel(2.7 h). We furthermore revise the periods for the old novae OY Ara, RS Car, V365Car, V849 Oph, V728 Sc…
The stochastic variability (flickering) of the nova-like system (subclass of cataclysmic variable) MV Lyr yields a complicated power density spectrum with four break frequencies. Scaringi et al. (2012) analysed high-cadence Kepler data of MV Lyr, taken almost continuously over 600 days, giving the unique opportunity to study multicomponent Power Density Spectra (PDS) over a wide frequency range. We modelled this variability with our statistical model based on disc angular momentum transport via discrete turbulent bodies with an exponential distribution of the dimension scale. Two different mod…
Variability on all time scales between seconds and decades is typical for cataclysmic variables (CVs). One of the brightest and best studied CVs is TT Ari, a nova-like variable which belongs to the VY Scl subclass, characterized by occasional low states in their light curves. It is also known as a permanent superhumper at high state, revealing "positive" (P_S > P_0) as well as "negative" (P_S < P_0) superhumps, where P_S is the period of the superhump and P_0 the orbital period. TT Ari was observed by the Canadian space telescope MOST for about 230 hours nearly continuously in 2007, with a tim…

(Shortened) Sequences of spectra of the nova-like cataclysmic variable (CV) BZ Cam were acquired on 9 nights in 2005-2006 in order to study the time development of episodes of wind activity known to occur frequently in this star. We confirm past results that the P-Cygni absorption components of the lines mostly evolve from a higher expansion velocity to lower velocity as an episode progresses. We also commonly find blueshifted emission components in the Halpha line profile, whose velocities and durations strongly suggest that they are also due to the wind. We suggest that the progression from …
