$\mathtt{qnm}$ is an open-source Python package for computing the Kerr quasinormal mode frequencies, angular separation constants, and spherical-spheroidal mixing coefficients. The $\mathtt{qnm}$ package includes a Leaver solver with the Cook-Zalutskiy spectral approach to the angular sector, and a caching mechanism to avoid repeating calculations. We provide a large cache of low $\ell, m, n$ modes, which can be downloaded and installed with a single function call, and interpolated to provide good initial guess for root-polishing at new values of spin.
The quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a regular black hole with charge are calculated in the eikonal approximation. In the eikonal limit the QNMs of black hole are determined by the parameters of the unstable circular null geodesics. The behaviors of QNMs are compared with QNMs of Reisner-Nordström black hole, it is done by fixing some of the parameters that characterize the black holes and varying another. We observed that the parameter that is related one effective cosmological constant at small distances , determines the behaviors of the QNMs of regular black hole with charge.
The purpose of this paper is to study quasinormal modes (QNM) of the Bardeen black hole due to scalar perturbations. We have done a thorough analysis of the QNM frequencies by varying the charge $q$, mass $M$ and the spherical harmonic index $l$. The unstable null geodesics are used to compute the QNM's in the eikonal limit. Furthermore, massive scalar field modes are also studied by varying the mass of the field. Comparisons are done with the QNM frequencies of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.
It is known that a quasinormal mode (QNM) of a remnant black hole dominates a ringdown gravitational wave (GW) in a binary black hole (BBH) merger. To study properties of the QNMs, it is important to determine the time when the QNMs appear in a GW signal as well as to calculate its frequency and amplitude. In this paper, we propose a new method of estimating the starting time of the QNM and calculating the QNM frequency and amplitude of BBH GWs. We apply it to simulated merger waveforms by numerical relativity and the observed data of GW150914. The results show that the obtained QNM frequencie…
Gravitational perturbations in the geometry of asymptotically flat black hole solution in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz(HL) gravity are considered and the associated quasinormal mode(QNM) frequencies are evaluated using WKB method. Black holes are found to be stable against small perturbations. We also find a significant deviation in the behavior of QNMs in HL theory for low values of HL parameter $ω$, from that in the standard General Relativity(GR). QNMs are long lived in Hořava theory compared with the usual Schwarzschild black hole case.
In this paper, we show how the quasinormal modes (QNMs) arise from the perturbations of massive scalar fields propagating in the curved background by using the artificial neural networks. To this end, we architect a special algorithm for the feedforward neural network method (FNNM) to compute the QNMs complying with the certain types of boundary conditions. To test the reliability of the method, we consider two black hole spacetimes whose QNMs are well-known: $4D$ pure de Sitter (dS) and five-dimensional Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. Using the FNNM, the QNMs of are computed n…
The expressions for the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of black holes with nonlinear electrodynamics, calculated in the eikonal approximation, are presented. In the eikonal limit QNMs of black holes are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesics. The unstable circular null orbits are derived from the effective metric that is the one obeyed by light rays under the influence of a nonlinear electromagnetic field. As an illustration we calculate the QNMs of four nonlinear electromagnetic black holes, two singular and two regular, namely from Euler-Heisenberg and Born-Infeld theories, fo…
The existence of quasinormal modes (QNMs) for waves propagating on pure de Sitter space has been called into question in several works. We definitively prove the existence of quasinormal modes for massless and massive scalar fields in all dimensions and for all scalar field masses, and present a simple method for the explicit calculation of QNMs and the corresponding mode solutions. By passing to coordinates which are regular at the cosmological horizon, we demonstrate that certain QNMs only appear in the QNM expansion of the field when the initial data do not vanish near the cosmological hori…
Using the WKB approximation, massless and massive Dirac quasinormal modes (QNMs) are studied in spherically symmetric regular spacetimes. We analyze the relationships between QNM frequencies and the parameters (angular momentum number $l$, magnetic monopole charge $β$ and the mass of the field $m$), and discuss the extreme charge of magnetic monopole $β_{e}$ for spherically symmetric regular black holes (BHs). Furthermore, we apply an expansion method to expand QNMs in inverse powers of $L=l+1/2$, and confirm good precision with $l>n$. Finally, we improve traditional finite difference method t…
The quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a black hole spacetime are the free, decaying oscillations of the spacetime, and are well understood in the case of Kerr black holes. We discuss a method for computing the QNMs of spacetimes which are slightly deformed from Kerr. We mention two example applications: the parametric, turbulent instability of scalar fields on a background which includes a gravitational QNM, and the shifts to the QNM frequencies of Kerr when the black hole is weakly charged. This method may be of use in studies of black holes which are deformed by external fields or are solutions to…
We investigate quasinormal modes (QNMs) and Hawking radiation of a Reissner-Nordström black hole sur-rounded by quintessence. The Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method is used to evaluate the QNMs and the rate of radiation. The results show that due to the interaction of the quintessence with the background metric, the QNMs of the black hole damp more slowly when increasing the density of quintessence and the black hole radiates at slower rate.
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we highlight a simple connection between the real part of quasinormal modes (QNMs) in the eikonal limit and shadow radius of BHs and then explore the effect of dark matter on the QNMs of massless scalar field and electromagnetic field perturbations in a black hole (BH) spacetime surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (BHPFDM). Using the WKB approximation we show that the quasinormal mode spectra of BHPFDM deviate from those of Schwarzschild black hole due to the presence of the PFDM encoded by the parameter $k$. Moreover it is shown that for any …
Leaver's method has been the standard for computing the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies for a Kerr black hole (BH) for a few decades. We start with a spectral variant of Leaver's method introduced by Cook and Zalutskiy (arXiv: 1410.7698) and propose improvements in the form of computing the necessary derivatives analytically, rather than by numerical finite differencing. We also incorporate this derivative information into qnm, a Python package which finds the QNM frequencies via the spectral variant of Leaver's method. We confine ourselves to first derivatives only.
The purpose of this paper is to study quasinormal modes (QNM) of a regular black hole with a cosmological constant due to scalar perturbations. A detailed study of the QNM frequencies for the massless scalar field were done by varying the parameters of the theory such as the mass, magnetic charge, cosmological constant, and the spherical harmonic index. We have employed the sixth order WKB approximation to compute the QNM frequencies. We have also proved analytically that the $l=0$ mode for the massless field reach a constant value at late times. We have approximated the near-extreme regular-d…
Based on a regular exact black hole (BH) from nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) coupled to General Relativity, we investigate its stability of such BH through the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) of electromagnetic (EM) field perturbation and its thermodynamics through Hawking radiation. In perturbation theory, we can deduce the effective potential from nonlinear EM field. The comparison of potential function between regular and RN BHs could predict their similar QNMs. The QNMs frequencies tell us the effect of magnetic charge $q$, overtone $n$, angular momentum number $l$ on the dynamic evolution of NL…
We present a package for Mathematica that facilitates the numerical computation of the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of a black hole/black brane. Requiring as input only the QNM equation(s), the application of a single Mathematica function will compute the spectrum efficiently, by discretizing the equation(s) and solving the resulting generalized eigenvalue equation. It is applicable to a large variety of black holes, independent of their asymptotics. The package comes fully documented and with several tutorials. Here we present a self-contained review of the method and consider several appl…
In this paper, we have studied QNM modes and absorption cross sections of Born-Infeld-de Sitter black holes. WKB approximation is employed to compute the QNM modes of massless scalar fields. We have also used null geodesics to compute quasi-normal modes in the eikonal approximation. In the eikonal limit QNMs of black holes are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesics. Unstable circular null orbits are derived from the effective metric which is obeyed by light rays under the influence of a nonlinear electromagnetic field. Comparison is shown with the QNM of the linear electro…
The possibility of testing gravity theories with the help of gravitational wave detections has become an interesting arena of recent research. In this paper, we follow this direction by investigating the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the axial perturbations for charged black holes in the Palatini-type theories of gravity, specifically ($i$) the Palatini $f(R)$ gravity coupled with Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics and ($ii$) the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI) coupled with Maxwell electromagnetic fields. The coupled master equations describing perturbations of charged black hol…
Using the operator approach, we obtain quasinormal modes (QNMs) of BTZ black hole in spin-3 topologically massive gravity by solving the first-order equation of motion with the transverse-traceless condition. We find that these are different from those obtained when solving the second-order differential equation for the third-rank tensor of spin-3 field subject to suitable boundary conditions and having the sign ambiguity of mass. However, it is shown clearly that two approaches to the left-moving QNMs are identical, while the right-moving QNMs of solving the second-order equation are given by…
We study the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) of the Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a quintessence field after implementing the quantum corrections to its solution as required by the Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP). We analyse the dependence of the QNMs on the deformation parameters of GUP as well as on the quintessence parameter. In most cases the QNMs show the appreciable dependency on these parameters. For a better idea of the accuracy of calculations of QNMs, we compare the results of the QNMs obtained via Mashhoon method with the 6th order WKB method. A good agreement between thes…
It is shown here that the extraction of quasinormal modes (QNMs) within the first Born approximation of the scattering amplitude is mathematically not well founded. Indeed, the constraints on the existence of the scattering amplitude integral lead to inequalities for the imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies. For instance, in the Schwarzschild case, $0 \leq ω_I < κ$ (where $κ$ is the surface gravity at the horizon) invalidates the poles deduced from the first Born approximation method, namely, $ω_n = i n κ$.
In this paper, we study the shadow of a 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole as photons couple to the Weyl tensor and find that the propagation of light depends on its polarization which leads to the existence of a double shadow. Then, we discuss the effect of the coupling parameter $λ$, the polarization of light and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ on shadow. Further we explore the influence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ on the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless scalar field and investigate the connection between the real part of QNMs in the eikonal limit and the shadow rad…
The rapid advancement of gravitational wave astronomy in recent years has paved the way for the burgeoning development of black hole spectroscopy, which enhances the possibility of testing black holes by their quasinormal modes (QNMs). In this paper, the axial gravitational perturbations and the QNM frequencies of black holes in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity (HMPG) are investigated. The HMPG theory is characterized by a dynamical scalar degree of freedom and is able to explain the late-time accelerating expansion of the universe without introducing any \textit{ad hoc} screening mechanism …
We compute the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massive scalar field in the background of a rotating three-dimensional Hořava AdS black hole, and we analyze the effect of the breaking of the Lorentz invariance on the QNMs. Imposing on the horizon that there are only ingoing waves and at infinity the Dirichlet boundary conditions and the Neumann boundary condition, we calculate the oscillatory and the decay modes of the QNMs. We find that the propagation of the scalar field is stable in this background and employing the holographic principle we find the different times of the perturbed system to r…
We study charged Dirac quasinormal modes (QNMs) on Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes with generic Robin boundary conditions, by extending our earlier work of neutral Dirac QNMs on Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. We first derive the equations of motion for charged Dirac fields on a RN-AdS background. To solve these equations we impose a requirement on the Dirac field: that its energy flux should vanish at asymptotic infinity. A set of two Robin boundary conditions compatible with QNMs is consequently found. By employing both analytic and numeric methods, we then obtain the q…
Models of black hole properties play an important role in the ongoing direct detection of gravitational waves from black hole binaries. One important aspect of model based gravitational wave detection, and subsequent estimation of source parameters, are the low level modeling of information related to perturbed Kerr black holes. Here, we present new phenomenological methods to model the analytically understood gravitational wave spectra (quasi-normal mode frequencies), and harmonic structure of Kerr black holes (mixing coefficients between spherical and spheroidal harmonics). In particular, we…
In this work, we utilize the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massless scalar perturbation to probe the Van der Waals-like small and large black holes (SBH/LBH) phase transition of charged topological Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in four-dimensional massive gravity. We find that the signature of this SBH/LBH phase transition is detected in the isobaric as well as in the isothermal process. This further supports the idea that the QNMs can be an efficient tool to investigate the thermodynamical phase transition.
In this paper, the quasinormal modes of gravitational perturbation around some well-known regular black holes were evaluated by using the WKB approximation as well as the asymptotic iteration method. Through numerical calculation, we make a detailed analysis of the gravitational QNM frequencies by varying the characteristic parameters of the gravitational perturbation and the spacetime charge parameters of the regular black holes. It is found that the imaginary part of quasinormal modes as a function of the charge parameter has different monotonic behaviors for different black hole spacetimes.…
We study the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of charged scalar in the static spherically symmetric black hole background near the event and cosmological horizon. Starting with numerical analysis of the QNMs of black hole in the dRGT massive gravity, the mathematical tool called the Asymptotic Iteration Method~(AIM) is used to calculate the quasinormal frequencies. The parameters such as the mass and charge of the black hole, the cosmological constant, the coefficient of the linear term from massive gravity $γ$, and the mass of the scalar are varied to study the behavior of the QNMs. We found the towe…
If a small compact object orbits a black hole, it is known that it can excite the black hole's quasinormal modes (QNMs), leading to high-frequency oscillations ("wiggles") in the radiated field at $\mathcal{J}^+$, and in the radiation-reaction self-force acting on the object after its orbit passes through periapsis. Here we survey the phenomenology of these wiggles across a range of black hole spins and equatorial orbits. In both the scalar-field and gravitational cases we find that wiggles are a generic feature across a wide range of parameter space, and that they are observable in field pert…
In a seminal paper, Alcubierre showed that Einstein's theory of general relativity appears to allow a super-luminal motion. In the present study, we use a recent eternal-warp-drive solution found by Alcubierre to study the effect of Hawking radiation upon an observer located within the warp drive in the framework of the quantum tunneling method. We find the same expression for the Hawking temperatures associated with the tunneling of both massive vector and scalar particles, and show this expression to be proportional to the velocity of the warp drive. On the other hand, since the discovery of…
We study the behavior of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless and massive linear waves on Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes as the black hole mass tends to 0. Via uniform estimates for a degenerating family of ODEs, we show that in bounded subsets of the complex plane and for fixed angular momenta, the QNMs converge to those of the static model of de Sitter space. Detailed numerics illustrate our results and suggest a number of open problems.
