We give a characterisation of the weak* symmetric strong diameter 2 property for Lipschitz function spaces in terms of a property of the corresponding metric space. Using this characterisation we show that the weak* symmetric strong diameter 2 property is different from the weak* strong diameter 2 property in Lipschitz spaces, thereby answering a question posed in a recent paper by Haller, Langemets, Lima, and Nadel.
We characterise the octahedrality of Lipschitz-free space norm in terms of a new geometric property of the underlying metric space. We study the metric spaces with and without this property. Quite surprisingly, metric spaces without this property cannot embed isometrically into $\ell_1$ and similar Banach spaces.
We characterise the Banach spaces $X$ which are $L_1$-predual as those for which every Lipschitz compact mapping $f:N\longrightarrow X$ admits, for every $\varepsilon>0$ and every $M$ containing $N$, a Lipschitz (compact) extension $F:M\longrightarrow X$ so that $\Vert F\Vert\leq (1+\varepsilon)\Vert f\Vert$. Some consequences are derived about $L_1$-preduals and about Lipschitz-free spaces.
We give a complete characterisation of the spaces $\dot{B}^α_{p,q}$ and $\dot{F}^α_{p,q}$ by using a non-smooth kernel satisfying near minimal conditions. The tools used include a Stromberg-Torchinsky type estimate for certain maximal functions and the concept of a distribution of finite growth, inspired by Stein. Moreover, our exposition also makes essential use of a number of refinements of the well-known Calderon reproducing formula. The results are then applied to obtain the characterisation of these spaces via a fractional derivative of the Poisson kernel.
We study the Daugavet property in the space of Lipschitz functions $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ for a complete metric space $M$. Namely we show that $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ has the Daugavet property if and only if $M$ is a length space. This condition also characterises the Daugavet property in the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$. Moreover, when $M$ is compact, we show that either $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the Daugavet property or its unit ball has a strongly exposed point. If $M$ is an infinite compact subset of a strictly convex Banach space then the Daugavet property of $\operatorname{Lip}_…
We solve some open problems regarding diameter two properties within the class of Banach spaces of real-valued Lipschitz functions by using the de Leeuw transform. Namely, we show that: the diameter two property, the strong diameter two property, and the symmetric strong diameter two property are all different for these spaces of Lipschitz functions; the space $\operatorname{Lip}_0(K_n)$ has the symmetric strong diameter two property for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$, including the case of $n=2$; every local norm-one Lipschitz function is a Daugavet point.
We characterise the weak$^*$ symmetric strong diameter $2$ property in Lipschitz function spaces by a property of its predual, the Lipschitz-free space. We call this new property decomposable octahedrality and study its duality with the symmetric strong diameter $2$ property in general. For a Banach space to be decomposably octahedral it is sufficient that its dual space has the weak$^*$ symmetric strong diameter $2$ property. Whether it is also a necessary condition remains open.
In the context of Euclidean spaces equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure, we prove the equivalence among several different notions of Sobolev space present in the literature and we characterise the minimal weak upper gradient of all Lipschitz functions.
Given two metric spaces $M$ and $N$ we study, motivated by a question of N. Weaver, conditions under which an isometric composition operator $C_ϕ:\mathrm{Lip}_0(M)\longrightarrow \mathrm{Lip}_0(N)$ is isometric depending on the properties of $ϕ$. We obtain a complete characterisation of those operators $C_ϕ$ in terms of a property of the function $ϕ$ in the case that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is the closed convex hull of its preserved extreme points. Also, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for $C_ϕ$ being isometric in the case that $M$ is geodesic.
The aim of this note is to study octahedrality in vector valued Lipschitz-free Banach spaces on a metric space under topological hypotheses on it. As a consequence, we get that the space of Lipschitz functions on a metric space valued in a dual Banach space satisfies the weak-star strong diameter two property, under natural topological hipothesess on the metric space. Also, we show an example proving that these hypotheses are optimal.
We study the relationship between exact interpolation spaces for positive, linear operators, for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators, and for positive Gagliardo-Peetre operators, and exact partially $K$-monotone spaces in interpolation couples of compatible Banach lattices. By general Banach lattice theory we recover a characterisation of exact interpolation spaces for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators in the couple $(L^1,L^\infty )$ due to Bénilan and Crandall.
In this note we prove that a molecule $d(x,y)^{-1}(δ(x)-δ(y))$ is an exposed point of the unit ball of a Lispchitz free space $\mathcal F(M)$ if and only if the metric segment $[x,y]=\{z \in M \; : \; d(x,y)=d(z,x)+d(z,y) \}$ is reduced to $\{x,y\}$. This is based on a recent result due to Aliaga and Pernecká which states that the class of Lipschitz free spaces over closed subsets of M is closed under arbitrary intersections when M has finite diameter.
For a complete metric space $M$, we prove that the finitely supported extreme points of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ are precisely the elementary molecules $(δ(p)-δ(q))/d(p,q)$ defined by pairs of points $p,q$ in $M$ such that the triangle inequality $d(p,q)<d(p,r)+d(q,r)$ is strict for any $r\in M$ different from $p$ and $q$. To this end, we show that the class of Lipschitz-free spaces over closed subsets of $M$ is closed under arbitrary intersections when $M$ has finite diameter, and that this allows a natural definition of the support of elements of $\mathcal{F…
We show that the class of Lipschitz-free spaces over closed subsets of any complete metric space $M$ is closed under arbitrary intersections, improving upon the previously known finite-diameter case. This allows us to formulate a general and natural definition of supports for elements in a Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$. We then use this concept to study the extremal structure of $\mathcal F(M)$. We prove in particular that $(δ(x) - δ(y))/d(x,y)$ is an exposed point of the unit ball of $\mathcal F(M)$ whenever the metric segment $[x,y]$ is trivial, and that any extreme point which can be…
In the setting of complete metric spaces, we prove that integral currents can be decomposed as a sum of indecomposable components. In the special case of one-dimensional integral currents, we also show that the indecomposable ones are exactly those associated with injective Lipschitz curves or injective Lipschitz loops, therefore extending Federer's characterisation to metric spaces. Moreover, some applications of our main results will be discussed.

Suppose that $Ω$ is the open region in $\mathbb{R}^n$ above a Lipschitz graph and let $d$ denote the exterior derivative on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We construct a convolution operator $T $ which preserves support in $\bar{Ω$}, is smoothing of order 1 on the homogeneous function spaces, and is a potential map in the sense that $dT$ is the identity on spaces of exact forms with support in $\barΩ$. Thus if $f$ is exact and supported in $\barΩ$, then there is a potential $u$, given by $u=Tf$, of optimal regularity and supported in $\barΩ$, such that $du=f$. This has implications for the regularity in homo…
Let $Ω$ be a strongly Lipschitz domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, whose complement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is unbounded. Let $L$ be a second order divergence form elliptic operator on $L^2 (Ω)$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition, and the heat semigroup generated by $L$ have the Gaussian property $(G_{\mathrm{diam}(Ω)})$ with the regularity of their kernels measured by $μ\in(0,1]$, where $\mathrm{diam}(Ω)$ denotes the diameter of $Ω$. Let $Φ$ be a continuous, strictly increasing, subadditive and positive function on $(0,\infty)$ of upper type 1 and of strictly critical lower type $p_Φ\in(n/(n+μ),1]$. In t…
In this paper we provide several \emph{metric universality} results. We exhibit for certain classes $\cC$ of metric spaces, families of metric spaces $(M_i, d_i)_{i\in I}$ which have the property that a metric space $(X,d_X)$ in $\cC$ is coarsely, resp. Lipschitzly, universal for all spaces in $\cC$ if the collection of spaces $(M_i,d_i)_{i\in I}$ equi-coarsely, respectively equi-Lipschitzly, embeds into $(X,d_X)$. Such families are built as certain Schreier-type metric subsets of $\co$. We deduce a metric analog to Bourgain's theorem, which generalized Szlenk's theorem, and prove that a space…
We show that all the symmetric projective tensor products of a Banach space $X$ have the Daugavet property provided $X$ has the Daugavet property and either $X$ is an $L_1$-predual (i.e.\ $X^*$ is isometric to an $L_1$-space) or $X$ is a vector-valued $L_1$-space. In the process of proving it, we get a number of results of independent interest. For instance, we characterise "localised" versions of the Daugavet property (i.e.\ Daugavet points and $Δ$-points recently introduced) for $L_1$-preduals in terms of the extreme points of the topological dual, a result which allows to characterise a pol…
